  • To think that to this very day there is a living person (Kane Tanaka) who was born the same year as the Wright Brothers 1903 Flight and she will likely be here to see an aircraft fly over martian terrain currently located about 165,119,940 miles/265,734,784 kilometers from Earth. From 120 feet/36.5M to Hundreds of Millions of Miles/Kilometers in 118 Years.

  • How fast are those blades turning to get lift in that thin atmosphere? I know that the gravity is less, but even so..... would modified jet propulsion power a winged vehicle through the Martian atmosphere? I think that E. @mubasheer5584@mubasheer55843 жыл бұрын
    • I was thinking the same thing, its been more than 4 days just getting the helicopter ready to drop from the rover. Im guessing they are just being extremely cautious. If they give it a bunch of commands and step 5 of 20 commands malfunctions it could possibly cause damage to itself... that my guess. But I'm sure they are more anxious about flying that thing than we are so I don't think its to create drama 😅

    • @@mrbyamile6973 I think you are probably correct. They probably go through the deployment sequence one step at a time and then they carefully evaluate each step. Once they study all the data and confirm that a step has been completed properly then they do the next step. There is no rush so why do it too fast and risk blowing the whole thing.

      @joevignolor4u949@joevignolor4u9493 жыл бұрын
    • They are limited by the speed of light. There are hundreds of steps from landing to a flying drone. Each step requires a command to be sent via radio, time enough for the action to be accomplished then a message sent back to mission control to verify that the step has been completed. They must do this during roughly 10 hours of daylight every day and it takes about 15 minutes for the command to reach mars then a few minutes for it to be carried out then another 15 minutes for us to get the message that the command was carried out. So that is roughly 32-60 minutes per action. For 100 separate actions it would take 6-10 days depending on what the steps were. This is just for a single task and flying the drone is one of the more complex tasks.

    • Perhaps your definition of “ helicopter” is a bit narrower than the actual definition. All propeller driven drones are helicopters because the definition of helicopter is a vehicle capable of powered flight by utilizing propellers to achieve lift. You may define a helicopter as a piloted transit vehicle, but it isn’t. Also, drones ( mechanical, not biological) are usually defined as a remotely controlled propeller driven device, but this isn’t exactly a drone of you consider its ability to work without constant control and communication from NASA.

  • Just fly it already!!! Why all the drama???

    @wildbill7267@wildbill72673 жыл бұрын
    • No drama. They are limited by the speed of light. Imagine typing letters in this KZhead field and it took 15 minutes for the command for the letter to appear on Mars then another 15 minutes for a signal to come back telling you the letter was in the field on mars. Then you type the next letter and so on. There are over 100 separate steps from landing to the drone being in the air. It takes about 15 minutes for the signal to go from Earth to Mars, then anywhere from a couple of minutes to over an hour for the step to be completed then another 15 minutes for a message to get back to Earth telling mission control that the action has taken place and it is ready to receive the next command. Mars only has about 10 hours per day of sufficient daylight for video confirmation and so they can only complete around 10-15 steps per day. So that can mean 6-10 days to complete a task. Some tasks are more complex than others. This is one of the more complicated tasks. You are used to everything being instantaneous because you are right there where you are completing your tasks. But in real life things like this are not like a video game where everything happens instantaneously. Light and radio waves move at 186,000 miles per second. Mars is over 165,000,000 miles away from Earth. 165,000,000 ÷ 186,000 = 887 seconds = 14 minutes 47 seconds. So double that and add the amount of time for the step to complete. Keep in mind also that there is no power grid on Mars so motors are all very low voltage D.C. and so everything moves very slowly and relies on solar panels. The solar panels are a fraction of what is on a typical residential roof and so they cannot generate high voltage. hence, everything moves slow on Mars. One day when we can sent astronauts to Mars we won't have this issue because humans can think on their own and wont need mission control for each individual step in a complicated task. They can just carry the drone out of the space ship and unfold the legs manually in seconds and then set it on the ground and then turn it on and use the controller like we do on Earth unencumbered by the speed of light.

    • It is a whole lot more interesting than the Moon. It has water and a lot of it and it has an atmosphere meaning that Mars will be very suitable for colonization. All we need do is add organic material and seeds. Mars would provide water and soil. It is believed that some plants may be able to be grown on Mars without an enclosure. Other plants at an atmosphere only slightly more dense than Mars and this is very important for food production. We may not need to bring much air with us when we go to Mars. For the Moon we would need to bring air with us and then recycle it. While Mars has a thin atmosphere it is still an atmosphere and it is sufficient to sustain a few thousand people indefinitely with the right equipment. Keeping a hundred people alive on Mars for a year would cost less than keeping ten people alive on the Moon all else being equal. To anyone interested in space travel that makes Mars far more interesting than the Moon. Add to this the fact that Mars may very well already have life on a microscopic level or at one point in it's history it might have had some life.
