  • It makes sense. Not every dog is going to be adoptable, but they still have a home, food, space to play, other dogs, safety!!!

  • Ten years! and what an amazing achievement and difference you’ve made to the world Takis. It’s not surprising that some of the dogs dislike humans when one considers what humans are capable of! They are clearly happy in their beautiful new home. Thank you Takis 🙏🏼🇬🇧

  • What a difference you made in their lives Takis! You see what every individual dog needs. They are safe, they have food, they have water, they have a dog house and they have eachother. Nothing more they need and especially no people around them.

    • @@dougie6226 I took on a dog terriefied of people as I'm retired and I live on my own and could provide peaceful surroundings. It took about two and a half years for her to fully become herself and trust me. She's no longer scared of people, but will never be one that will go to people to say hi. She's a loving and wonderful dog for me and I'm really happy I gave her a home. The change in her is just amazing.

    • @@dougie6226 Think of how many staff he would need to socialize all those dogs to individual relationships to humans. It takes full time one on one attention. I tamed a dog that had never had a bond or lived in a house before, but could never have done it if she hadn't been my only dog at the time, and she had gentle instincts. Those dogs prefer to live separate from people because that is what they have known. They are attached to their companions and would be traumatized to be moved. Yes, a few of them could maybe acclimate after a lot of stress, but Taki is using his time to do the best he can for the greatest number of dogs. There are lots of examples of dogs that do acclimatize to humans are able to live in a home. These are just the ones that can't.

  • So sad that these dogs are still feral but I am happy that these fur babies are still getting their best lives. I know you tried your best to get them used to humans but they've been too hurt and just can't be convinced that not all humans are awful. Wonderful to see them running and enjoying. Five out of the 400 plus residents of the shelter is a not a bad average for the conditions they all came from. Well done Takis. You are a hero.

  • Wonderful. These types of dogs are the dogs the shelter here used to ask me to take and rehabilitate. They have had life so bad they will most likely never trust again. It is heartbreaking. I was really successful making them love me. But they couldn't be adopted. Other people terrified them and they couldn't handle it. I loved them so much. But it takes months to be accepted even. Bless you Taki for knowing your babies so well and giving them peace. 🐾❤️

  • I wondered about this since there are over 400 dogs at Takis Shelter and his viewers only see certain ones over and over again, especially the ones near his home in the outside area and the ones living inside with him. I figured there had to be some dogs who are well taken care of but assessed to be unsuitable for adoption due to their traumatic pasts. Takis and his wonderful crew focus on promoting the dogs ( and cats ) who are well socialized and can be adopted. Saving one dog at a time , over the years, has been a success for Takis Shelter ! Peace , love and happiness to everyone:)

Some dogs were so abused they are afraid to trust again. That's so sad. Like them, people are the last thing that l trust! From experience and from seeing how people treat innocent helpless Animals. Good 🍀 Luck with the olive harvest Taki. The olive trees have such a similar shape & look like the Weeping Willow trees we have over here. No one does more to make so many babies so happy. Some dogs take more effort and cost more than some want to pay. I really miss my teeth. Still Cara is safe, always has a home and is loved. • It shouldn’t be held against a dog (or any other badly treated animal…)if it can’t regain the trust it should have in us because of how deeply traumatised the animal is - the blame and shame should be laid at the feet of the so- called “humans” who turned against a creature that has been by man’s side for thousands of years. Archaeologists have opened graves thought to be over thirty thousand years old and discovered human and dog skeletons positioned in a way that shows a very strong bond between the two when they were alive. A dog skeleton shared a grave with a human and had a bone placed between its teeth. Also an ancient Egyptian grave when opened revealed the human was holding a puppy. Long may man’s journeys through life with a canine companion by his side continue.

  • This comment is based on my experience adopting one dog from a private shelter in a large U.S. city with a large number of feral dogs. Many people there refuse to spay or neuter dogs because they want to sell the puppies. When mama dog can no longer reproduce, she is dumped in the city streets. It is common to see dead dogs on the roadside and packs of dogs running loose. The dogs are afraid of people, but not necessarily hateful and aggressive. I found one dog for adoption from a shelter in this city. He and his littermates had been born into a pack of 35 dogs. People were afraid to go outdoors, or let their children outside. One rescue organization took all 35 dogs. When I called, the shelter told me the dog I called about ("Sam"), had been with them for 2 years in a foster kennel. There were no foster homes available because of surplus street dogs. Sam was not aggressive, just terrified of people, not housebroken, not social with other dogs, not trained for commands. The said, "We consider him unadoptable because he is shy." I replied, "I am shy. I understand shyness. I would love to adopt him." So I did. Sam arrived terrified, rolling onto his back and dripping urine when I looked at him. He refused to eat or drink anything until I turned off the lights, left the room and closed the door. He did not want to be touched, rather he flinched, stiffened and shook. Anytime possible, he would dash to the front door and try to slip out when I opened it. I had to keep a leash on him when he was in the house. The leash was always attached to a slightly loose harness. He urinated everywhere more than once, leading me to throw away all carpets and clean and store or give away chairs, tables, potted plants. Months after I adopted him, he was fully housebroken. Months later, he stopped trying to run away, then he would eat when I was in his presence and relaxed when I stroked and brushed him. One day I came home from work and found him sleeping on my bed. Now, after 5 years with me, he trusts me. However, he does not play with other dogs, people or toys. When walking on a leash in parks, he will greet other dogs, and after 10 seconds he moves on to follow scent trails and leave messages for other dogs. He has no interest in socializing with other people or dogs. He does not bark or run or have enthusiasm for anything other than food or uninterrupted walks. For me, he is a perfect companion. For most other people, he is the wrong dog. Not an aggressive dog, just born shy, like me, and remains shy, like me. The group that cared for him for 2 years before I adopted him correctly understood his genetics and circumstances of puppyhood. To people who say that Takis should try to socialize and train all his dogs, including his aggressive dogs, my reply is, he cannot, and should not try to do so. There is a strong, widespread, prejudice against dogs and cats with black fur. There are not enough people who have time and training to work with feral, black coated, aggressive dogs. There are very few people who will adopt ANY such dog out of fear that the dog might be afraid and attack them. In the US, there are many cases of people who have been killed by adopted dogs who were formerly mistreated, abandoned or feral. Any shelter who tries to rehabilitate such dogs for adoption is taking a huge risk if the dog is actually adopted. Trust Takis. He knows what he is doing. For some of his dogs, the best quality of life is a large enclosed area with other dogs and limited interactions with a small number of humans. They are lucky to have a sanctuary that recognizes and accommodates their personalities, histories and current needs. My dog is lucky that his shelter did the same, and kept him until I told them I understood shyness because I am shy. So please trust Takis, he knows what he is doing, and his dogs are getting the best possible care, motivated by love.

  • It is so neat how Takis rotates the dogs around to different areas. They don't get bored, and they get to interact with different dogs and things.

  • GOD Bless you Takis & for all the work that you do for the animals. It breaks my heart that almost all the dogs that are unadoptable & hate ppl are big black dogs. Sadly, they are the most unadoptable even here in America. And same goes for black cats :(

  • Probably pushed to the edge by unbelievable human abuse, you've given them a sanctuary of peace to live their lives free of their tormentors....blessings to you, again, dear Takis, for your profound compassion and understanding of all animals!

  • One of my three dogs is like this. He does not like people and most dogs. Fortunately he loves his two sisters and me (most of the time). I cannot even find a groomer who can wash him. Hell, I can't. My life may have to change soon because of these bad times but I am hoping I can find a way to keep him. He deserves a good life. Something made him the way he is and for the past three years I have had little success changing him. My only failure with a rescue.

  • I think if I were a volunteer (which unfortunately will never happen, for several reasons) I would not stay at the house. Instead, I would set up a small tent in one of the areas for the feral dogs and sleep there at night. Not directly interact with them, unless they themselves initiate contact, and see over time whether they respond to a human who doesn't demand anything of them.
