SQUASH. Pushing, shoving, blocking and questionable decisions

Karim El Hammamy and Richie Fallows get into it in the 2013 World Juniors Semi-Final.
The third game (1:1), from which almost all of these clips are taken, lasted 20 minutes with all the physical play, too much contact and YES LETs.
(The push on 1:53 is crazy).

  • There is a mixture of good, bad and questionable calls here. Decision fatigue is going to be a huge problem in a game like this. The referee needed to take a hard line much earlier in the game and issue conduct warnings. Between games the referee should have spoke to the players as they are both intent of playing the man and playing to a part of the court that they are closing off with their bodies. Fallows, is play looks more problematic because of his large frame, also he is easily able to push his opponent around due the the significant difference in mass between the players. Both players very poor sportsmanship shown. This would have been a nightmare of a game to referee and to try and keep control. I would have started issuing conduct strokes.

  • In the last 5-7 years there's been a significant shift in the way top PSA events are officiated. It improved the game. Those tactics don't work anymore if the official is one of the top PSA guys/gals. I watched that tournament when it was happening in 2013. El Hammany went on to beat Fares Dessouky in the final I believe...when Fares was pretty unstoppable at that age group.

  • It looked like the big guy was deliberately positioning himself behind the shorter player when he realised he had put himself in a bad position then pushed him in the back as soon as he had hit the ball. They were both questionable and I can't say if one started it but if one player was being difficult and the ref wasn't calling it well then the other player could have started to get frustrated and feel like they need to play the same way if the ref is going to reward it. I can't imagine how the ref didn't penalise him for that one push in the back on left mid court. If the shorter guy wasn't already feeling frustrated and pushing things himself then that would really change the tone of the match.

  • When it gets like this in any sport you have to learn to play through the physicality. Nothing good or bad just play hard and learn to be physical. It can happen in any sport. Except bowling I guess.

  • Ref needs to take command early on. Squash is no fun unless both players cooperate in their clearing. There’s no call to push, except very minimally to show effort for a let.

  • Terrible sportsmanship. Some players think they just own the court. One older man I played with used to push off my back to propel himself in the *opposite* direction (b/c he was v easy to fake and had no leg strength). Also had an outrageous swing and insisted that all drop shots be at least a foot above the tin (to spare his knees). Ditched him quick.

  • many decisions because both players are such warriors with high physical capacity. Both choose balls to bother adversary the most … Both are tricky sometime. I’ve seen 2 or maybe 3 calls that look very bad. Other look OK for me … OK mean we are in the blurie zone and you need to be consistent. People who are playing squash like senators will don’t like … They like clean rally but they also choose many time tricky shots to bother adversary … People who play high level sport (not only squash) know how fighting spirit is important. Asal take a very big space when he swing and use his physical to block the way … His opponent did the same but he is not strong enough so Asal made him fly … And of course with time players get tired, they don’t want to keep doing the best effort and go straight. Both players are not perfectly clean … Both players are warriors and gave there best … Both players made the show ! Squash rules are too blury to be an olympic game and referees are way too importants. Blame our game, not the players who trained for hours and do there best on court. People who don’t understand high level competition should just jeep there comments for Sunday local competitons …

    • Dude I'm 205 with 125kg. When I played (amateur) I just said let without pushing/touching the other since they could've died. Once I went to a tournament and a guy was running into me all the time heavily and was also blocking me. I asked lets even when it was clearly stroke and he was whining that I didn't even try to go there, and ref agreed. You can imagine that next time I simply went through his body and played all the balls. Since he was a tough guy he liked it but I never went to a squash tournament since I hated to play that way. Same happened here in my view, both guys got angry so the larger one obviously did the same as the small.
