The story of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a relatively brief one in the grand scheme of canine history, but it can be confused by the several different names hung on the breed at various times. The Bull-and-Terrier, the Patched Fighting Terrier, the Staffordshire Pit-dog, and the Brindle Bull are a few of the Stafford’s historical aliases.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are among the AKC terriers, such as the Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier, classified as “bull types.” All have a similar backstory. A few centuries ago, in the days when betting on the outcome of dog-oriented blood sports was all the rage in England, gamblers bred ferocious dogs to excel in these ghastly affairs. The granddaddy of these breeds was the Bulldog, created for the horrifying spectacle of bull-baiting.
Life expectancy: 12 - 14 years
Colors: Black, White, Brindle, Fawn, Black & White, Blue, Brindle & White, Red & White, Fawn & White, Red, Blue & White
Temperament: Affectionate, Bold, Intelligent, Reliable, Fearless, Loyal, Courageous
Weight: Female: 24-34 lbs (11-15 kg), Male: 28-37 lbs (13-17 kg)
Height: Female: 13-15 inches (33-38 cm), Male: 14-16 inches (36-41 cm)
This breed's temperament is described as tough, courageous, tenacious (read: stubborn), and curious. A people-loving personality makes him a good caretaker of his family, but he's less likely to be protective of property.
Biggest small dog, that's actually a good way to describe the breed.
My staffy is my "big, little dog" and my young gp is my "little, big dog"
Mini tanks
Or mini hulks
A Big Dog in a Pint Size. 🇺🇸👌🏽
My staffy isn't small she is the size of pitbulls
Best dog breed in the world, most loving, caring and loyal!
Everybody is going to say that about the breed they own. It's always like that.
I rescued a puppy and she's 8 months old and she's a Staffordshire Bull Terrier mixed with a greyhound I'm pretty sure doing a doggie DNA test to make sure but she is exactly what you say personality was The best dog has ever had even as a puppy
@@Kris_797 exactly 💯
@Val Danes Everybody would say that about their favorite breed.
@Val Danes I could say that a Basset Hound is the best. My cousin has a Staffy and he's not even loyal. Nor caring.
I adopted my Staffy girl in August. She is 10 and my perfect companion. She is snoring right behind me on the bed, rearranges the bedclothes to suit her sensibilities, and now we changed food, the farty problem is gone. I love her to pieces. Tinker is a sweetheart who was rescued from a hoarding issue. The person is in jail. Somehow, she has maintained her sweet nature.
I clicked on this video because my girl dog is the same black color with white chest. She is so loving and almost 10 years old. She gets along with my stray cats and is a joy in my home.
Fantastic dogs. Great temperament, fun, trainable, beautiful, fits in almost any size home and easily one of the best companion breeds around.
Correct brother, I believe it's the best dog, pitbull around. Thanks. Stay safe.
AGREED, got one as a first dog and I couldn’t be happier 😩
They are the perfect size for a dog in my experience
@@O_MontY breeders in the Black Country. That’s where Staffies originate from👍
Agreed, just keep in mind that many others' are fearful of this breed so it would be a respectful act to keep him/her leashed. Just as what was respectfully and kindly illustrated above.
I currently have a 2 year old black Staff who is the love of my life!!! Staffies need LOTS of attention and don't do well being left for long periods of time by themselves. We are retired and have been with our boy almost every day since we got him at 8 weeks. He has been socialised since day 1 with other dogs and he loves "every man an his dog" - literally! Occasionally we need to take him to a kennel if we can't take him with us on holidays but he settles in well and the kennel sends us videos of him having fun! He is definitely part of our family and has the run of our house - he especially loves his daily run on the off leash beach on the island we live on in Queensland, Australia! Above all else I would recommend the English Staff for people who have the time to dedicate to them and they will give back 100% of that love!
Are you on Bribie ? 👍🇦🇺
Best dog I’ve ever had hands down!! He is extremely affectionate.
Totally agree, my little Staffy is amazing. I’ve owned several different breeds of dogs, Boxer, greyhound, mixed mutts...Boxers and Staffy’s are in a class by themselves. If I could only chose one breed it would be the Staffy
My mate has a staffie he's literally one of the most friendly awesome well behaved dogs I have ever met he's good on the lead, he doesn't bother other dogs and he doesn't bark much
Man I gotta own a staffy one day. Such beautiful dogs. All dogs are beautiful dogs. I JUST LOVE DOGS.
I train working dog s and never have putted down any of my dog. We let them die naturally. It gives them a chance of last min miracles and we don't loose our respect among other dogs as they know what ur doing
@@dhruvrawat8978 yes but if a dog is terminal and in pain severe pain from cancer and other complications the last thing you can do as a loving responsible owner is put them to sleep. I couldn’t sit back and watch my dog suffer for days or weeks waiting for them to die. That’s just cruel.
If you love dogs, then adopt, don’t shop 🐾🐶❤️

@@cheharper4532 In the past 15 months I have lost two retired girl greyhounds at 12 and 13 yrs old, now there is just my 14 yrs old staffy left and with her grey face it reminds me we don't have much time left, so I taken her lead she just enjoys life and loves us. A staffy is a strong active dog who needs a very active family (a staffy is more active than a greyhound) and b/c they love their people family so much they hate to be left alone so having another dog does help while you are at work, again they need a lot of exercise and play otherwise they will dig escape your yard, bark and will be destructive.
You definitely hit the nail on the head with your description of the breed. We have a 2 year old blue, and he is adorable. Superb family dog and the most loving breed ever - Thanks for posting !
Grown up with dogs. and I've been blessed with lovely dogs. Staffs, labs and German shepherd's are all truly brilliant. The only breed I w9uld never have again is a Boxer.
"For people who like small dogs, but want a real...dog" @ 2:17 had me in tears lol too true
absolutley brilliant breed. Fun, loyal, playful, obedient and really easy to look after too. Never a dull moment with a staffy in the home.
I adopted a 10mth old staffy female last week. She is such a sweetheart. Very smart, loves people and very playful. Just love her.
My dog is staffy. Great breed, athletic, clever, can defend themselves from bigger dogs in contrast other small dogs.
My Staff is a very athletic 2 yo but has been attacked at the local dog park by a mini fox terrier. They owner thought it was great that his little dog could intimidate a Staffie but that shows much more about the owner than my beautiful boy.
I just got a 4 month old British staffy .. dude she learns every trick I teach her in 1 day
The best dog bread I’ve ever had!! My Staffordshire terrier is 13and a half and still athletic and the kindest creature I’ve ever met.
Mine recently turned 13 and still has puppy energy, when I can get him to wake up. Best dog I'll ever have
Hi from the UK! Great overview of our Staffys. Only thing you forgot to mention was that they are also known by their nickname of "nanny dogs" in the UK with them being so good with kids ❤
Had my Brindle staff put to sleep about 3 months ago, he was 16 and just wouldn't give up. Legs went in the end, so I took him in. Miss that guy, amazing dog 💗
My thoughts are with you for the loss of your baby...although they're meant to be rufty tufy they're actually a very soft loving caring breed. Ive had three...you had 16years of joy and love fron your Staffy how privileged we are to have such a beautiful breed..❤❤
I'm sorry for your loss. He's crossed the rainbow bridge and you can be assured you were loved by him as much as you loved him. I lost my Staffie too. I'll never forget Honey and her funny ways.
Same here mine was around 16 . Been yr and a half don't think you truly get over it
Got mine Sunday just gone. Absolutely great dog and he’s learning really quickly
watching my 11 year old rescue, thinking i didn’t save you … you saved me!!! 8 years of loyalty and devotion you’d never imagine possible. i’ve added a fawn puppy now 1 year old that my older boy fathered and schooled . watching his health sudddnly decline …. i can’t even think of how it will be never own anything other now
Dude here lost his beloved staffie when it defended him from an attack by a crocodile. Loyalty is a thing with these fantastic dogs. Just be aware that they shed hair a LOT. Short hair, but constantly. Love your dog, its the right thing to do.
Wtf were you doing for that to happen? My staffy probably would have said "let's gtfoh"
Fax. They said they don’t shed a lot. But I gotta vacuum every day with mine
How awful - just a brutal loss :-( Agree that they shed a lot of hair, but not nearly as much as Labradors! A good DYSON fixes that! hahahahA!
Same with dobes but I love grooming and brushing so probably encouraged shedding. Thinking of getting a rescue staffy soon.
@@Gunzee I lost my Ridgeback in the spring (only 7 years old). The wife and kids wanted a dog a month later. I did not. They went to an adoption event, came home with two Staffy puppies (4months). They are a handful but those full body wags are worth it. Hard to give my heart away, again.
You have a great voice for these kinds of productions. Very well put together video. Thank you sir! God bless you man definitely subscribing
Never had a problem with my dogs. Socialize early with other dogs and of course people. Training is a must. After that, you got a great companion.
By far my favorite dog breed. Have loved both staffies I’ve owned.
Early socialization and lots of love and patient training
Great upload.Got to love the Staffy.
Nice documentary👍🏻
Good channel for information and infotainment, thanks from Holland, Europe.
32 years with the breed. My children and grandchildren have grown with Staffords. We love the breed. I just hope they don’t get popular .😊
Thanks for the break down.
Hey Zeke thanks for doing another on the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I've owned the breed for the past thirty years and I wouldn't own another breed as much as I love other dogs. Thanks for sharing!
Agreed! I had always had Labs and Golden Retrievers as a young person, before my first Staff! I didn't know much about the breed and thought they were very scary and they looked aggressive! My husband at the time insisted our next dog was going to be a Staff and I was aghast!! I then did my research and found they are called the "Nanny Dog" in the UK - this was what convinced me to agree as I had 3 young children of my own and I was also a Family Day Carer so need a dog that was kid friendly! That was 25 years ago and I now have my 3rd beautiful Staff and he is the love of our lives! (husband #3!! LOL!)
Excellent introduction to the Stafford world, great job. Karwillage Staffords
Great videos keep up the good work!
One of the best dog breeds ever! Very friendly, funny and welcoming dogs.
I have a staffy boy, hes weight is around 24 kg and he is just turned 2 years, he is a loyal and beautiful boy, loves everyone. Great to have by your side❤️
Amen, I’ve loved every second with my Staffy. Great all purpose dog
My girl staffy is 12 kg and she is now 14 yrs old and she just loves us just as much as we love her. I was looking on online at animal shelters in my area and most of the dogs there are Staffys, it breaks my heart to see those beautiful dogs still looking for their forever family all b/c someone gave up on them, most of the time its b/c they didn't research the breed to make sure the breed suits them and their family &/or they were inexperienced. Staffys are only for experienced dog owners who have an active family, a Staffys is a strong active dog who needs a lot of training, exercise and play, otherwise they will dig escape your yard, bark and will be destructive.
I also had two retired girl greyhounds who weighed 24 - 25 kg, suddenly lost them in the past 15 month at the age of 12- 13 yrs old. RIP girls
A REAL MAGNIFICENT PHENOMENAL AMAZING BEAUTIFUL MAJESTIC BREED....AN ALL IN 1 PACKAGE DOG... BRAVE STRONG AGILE SMART..PROTECTIVE LOVING
i have a brindle stuffy and he is so loving and him and my blue nose get along great
These dogs don't know that they're small(I don't say medium). I had one for 15 years, lost him 6 months ago to stomach cancer. Best dog and the most athletic I've ever had. I found this breed 15 years ago after originally looking for an English Bulldog. There has to be a healthy and athletic breed in my household at all times and the Staffy has had me locked in. Next year I already have a pup spoken for.
Because of the English staff that's why the APBT is such a great dog its in the DNA
I have had 3 Staffordshire bull terrier dogs and still have one love ❤️ my Staff. Before I got my first Staff I had a Jack Russell terrier I had a friend that had a staffordshire bull terrier and that’s how I got into the breed. Great dogs.
I had a red one growing up, had her for 15 years. Amazing dog and so soft. Now we’ve just bought a blue one at the same age my daughter was when I first had one. Our dog is one now and reminds me so much of my old dog it’s so nice and another amazing family pet
I love the blue Staffies but many suffer from hereditary problems due to inbreeding in pursuit of the blue colour. You didn’t see blue Staffies years ago, most were brindle or red. Now everyone is after blue Staffies it’s almost like a fashion.
@@matty6848 yeah I agree with you there. My dog has a lot of skin problems and vet said the blues are prone to bad skin and have more allergies than other colour staffy’s
@@matty6848 This.
2:50 haha my red staffy will never attack anything he’s so friendly and loving 100% agree you should get a Staffordshire bull terrier! 👏👏
I had a staff x English bull terrier, best dog to have graced this planet
OMG....he’s so beautiful. My Pittie Mamba might get jealous she’d have a cool playmate!🥰
Beautiful dogs
Simply the best dogs ever 👍👍👍
Nice vidéo 🐶🥰j'adore les STAFFIES
Incredibly loving.
I have a staffordshire terrier mix- she’s got cattle dog, chow & cocker spaniel her body is very compact like the staffordshire and she’s quite the character!!
Staffies are good with children, that's why they're known and nanny dogs. They are so loyal and just want to make their master happy!
I love this breed of dog Very powerful yet controllable trainable and eager to please
very cute dog particularly with that rosette collar.
Got a staffy/lab cross rescue... she's about 12 now (never knew her exact birthday so I gave her 21st April, same as our late Queen!). Fantastic with kids, tough as old boots, doesn't tolerate other dogs having her toys though. We can take anything off her including bones, but watching her little short legs win in a thrown ball even up against our rescue Lurcher and my son's Kelpie is hilarIous... she always wins!!
I grew up with 3 of them. They are sweet dogs!
Beautiful Dog awesome coat great shape
My favorite of them all!!.... It's easier to say they come in 5 solid colors, red, black, blue, fawn and brindle with a white chest crest. The 6th which is pied is white with one of the 5 colors party or patched....
You should do an episode on the Irish staffs and Irish bull breeds.
Best dog I ever owned rescue staffie girl my daughters companion
I love staffys. Although I love big dogs, I prefer small ones. They are big dogs in small packages which is perfect for me. I have a mini bull terrier and hope to get a staffy one day.
I have a 13 year old fawn female. That still has a lot left in her. Best dog in the world!
One of my favorite breeds My best friend had one.
I absolutely love my brindle. She's very smart and she loves babies an all of the grandchildren. She was a rescue.
The most popular dog in the U.K.!!! Best dog on the planet boooommm!!! Mine is cross with an American bulldog. So does that make her an Am staff?? They are traditionally also known as nanny dogs. As back in the day, when the parents went to work. The nanny used to bring this dog in for the kids to play and look after them.
Thank you so much my friend, I currently own a Cane Corso, He’s getting old and so am I. My next I will definitely be a Staffordshire terrier.
There fantastic dogs. Socialise lots n walk regular and there good as gold. Had them for 20yrs now
Yea .. my boy is the same breed .. so it explains why he can never contain himself whenever he sees any other animals .. and other dogs specially black ones. But really sweet , understanding , intelligent af . ❤️👍👍
Didn’t you upload this before bro good video nonetheless 💯
The breeds I saw were; BLUE NOSE PIT(not a breed)BULLTERRIER. & AMSTAFF,
Good fun loving dogs. Little goers. I just have a larger staffy (amstaffs) temp very similar still
They are relentless!
I have a half staffordshire bull terrier/bully, French bulldog mix awesome dog
The black is gorgeous my baby is a grey &VERY LOVED
The bonie Black bell...I've had one ....go for the runt ,they'll know you saved em ,build em up ...loyalty. bond is strong
Staffy. Most affectionate lil beast you could ever own. Not a bad bone in their body
Great videos man! Would you ever be interested in doing more videos on hunting breeds and interviewing folks who actually hunt with them? You just don’t see much solid videos on them.
I got an American staffordshire. People often think he's an American bully. His head is huge
Yes lovely dogs. Like the English staffie but bigger from what I can gather. Both have great temperaments and make great family dogs👍
No doubt, this breed is a very beautiful dog. Brings bundles of joys to the family. They are great with people and even children. Obviously, one needs to be highly responsible also to likely, socialise them from early on properly. Yet supervision is needed. My staff Jazz passed away around in 2016. I still miss her sooo very much. I agree with the gentleman in the video. These dogs are incredibly loving, goofy, affectionate and loyal. They can be very playful yet stubborn but in a funny way that brings joy. They can be very jealous though. And as the man also said, probably not wise to have them off the leash in a public place or park. As they may increase the chances of going hyper bananas.. and can not tend to be that friendly with other dogs if not socialised properly. Ideally best not and never to risk the harm to the dog, or of course injuries with other peoples dogs. They can get very over excited and short legged staffs in particular. They are a lot lot stronger then they appear to look in size. So being on the leash is advisable personally from my experience at all times. Especially, if you take this breed out for a walk in a public park for example. When I used to come home from work Jazz would go nuts and greet me like an excited child. She loved cuddles and her walks. She was so incredibly loyal and loving. To add bonus they would make cute grunting sounds when excited.
A landlady's Staffie had a habit of whining if she wanted attention - and who was I to refuse?! She was a wonderful dog, often mistaken for a Pit bull but I wouldn't have minded if she was. Pits are great dogs , cared for properly. Love the attitude of Staffs. Miss you Peggy ❤️🐕
I have a 2 year old (Oct. 11th) Brindle Female who is 35lbs, solid, sinewy and very agile and athletic. she is LOYAL, attentive, Courageous and very intelligent. she loves and protects my FAMILY, and adores my grandchildren and is people friendly. GOD spelled Backwards ~ 😇 ""
I have two staffy sisters.... 15 weeks old! Adorable licking machines!
This dog is gorgeous. I want one BADLY.
Started in the bull breeds with this breed 30 yrs ago.
Had one when I was 12. His name was Tazz but died young. He resembled Jock of the Bushveld and I miss him🙏🏾

LOOOVE these dogs ❤❤❤❤
I have 2 boys they are my best friends. So loyal caring very good with kids. I swear they are the funniest dogs you’ll meet I’m always laughing
We have a seal 5yo Amstaff AND a black brindle 4 month old Staffy. The playtime in our home is OFF the scales! BUT the one thing I ❤ is how she loves our kids, but she favors our 2 girls over our son. IF he messes w the girls...she's fussing at him😝! She loves to chase blowing leaves, butterflies, birds, etc. I am always tell her...you'll never catch them, but she's determined!
I own a 12 month old beautiful brindle, wht semi spotted chest, who is bigger than BOTH her parents at 44lbs (and growing). EXCELLENT TEMPERMENT around my grandchildren! she is intelligent, watchful, and protective of my family and not very fond of ANY dogs (or cats, critters lol). she is cut up like a minature Sherman tank, and we love here dearly. BEST DOG God ever created ~ 2nd to NONE. 😇🐶
A landlady had a large Staffie called Peggy. White, with a large black spot on her back! Peggy and were inseparable, she loved lying across my legs as I watched TV, and her dainty little paws rarely touched the floor when in the house! She was that strong when out walking that I had to tie a thick blue nylon tow- rope to her lead! Yes, a tow -rope! One day a man in the park hit her with a shovel, but she didn't even bark, or try to attack him in defence. A real test of her true nature. I was in tears, but Peggy turned out fine. I still miss her years later 🐕❤️🐕❤️🐕❤️
Just adopted a staffy to be a companion for our boxer-staffy mix. I think we've brought on the only non-alpha Staffordshire Terrier in the universe!
How is your staffy getting on???
@@biblybims9868 He's doing really well! But he doesn't live with us anymore. One of our daughters fell in love with him. She lives alone, so she took him on a trial basis and it turns out they're a match made in heaven. Proof every dog has their person! And, bonus, he helped our other dog get over separation anxiety. That crazy little creature has been a big blessing in our family.
@@nancyannesunboxings that really is amazing news
Loved my staffy was my daughters best friend they grew up together very loyal good family dog very strong and energetic but very high prey instinct like you say
Same instict As any other Terrier. Our Jack Rusell Was a beast of a hunter. Never leashed him off in the woods.. Our staffies are Just fine with All animals :)
Man my staffy is a nut. Ran up a entire cliff. Keep on leash. He’s non aggressive. High energy. Attentive. Don’t need an alarm. Always on point. Big Nip!
A landlady's Staffie was a great guard dog. One day someone got into the front living room via a window, but left soon after, with £3.00 and a Bible! (Saw her large photo on the wall!) Chances are Peggy didn't even make an appearance, as she slept in the landlady's bed all day!!! 🐕❤️
Amazing breed beautiful 😁
I looked at some of the comments. Just as reminder socialization must be a major emphasis as well for any dog.
Man, do they love to socialize.
A good all around versatile dog as are all 3 of the "pit bull" breeds. Training is definitely a must and should never be skimped on.
Best all around dog
Staffs R the best Great video 👍
My Staffy is absolutely amazing! We love him so much! He’s very intelligent, funny, loyal and loving!
Staffys are my 2nd favorite breed. Boerbol being my #1 and Akita being #3 In regards to biggest small dog, I’ve never seen a bigger drive from a small build than that of a Patterdale. Those dogs are Tasmanian devils
Patterdales are downright game.
Boerboel definitely the best
Mine is a Staffy mixed and the funny thing is she’s a mixed of my two favorite dogs Staffy and Caviler King Charles lol
I’ve got a rescue mix of Patterdale and Staffy, definitely an interesting dog to say the least! He has the instinctive hunting drive and focus from the Patterdale side, but also the loving and loyal characteristics of a staffy too. Best dog I’ve ever had
Beautiful breed! :D
I own one and he is my best bud he also has light brown fur with a white stripe down his chest. But he is probably one of the rarest types.
lovely dogs
I was looking at these dogs today. I am considering getting one.
Rescue, rescue, rescue....
They are the sweetest but if you are looking for a dog with protective instincts don't get one mine is 14 and she hasn't been a protector at all she is the sweetest dog I've ever met.
I have one, he's 8 months old. I was going to import one at a cost of €1000. I ended up getting one from a rescue centre. I was lucky, my fiance applied to reacue him as a pup. He's a beauty, we got him at three and a half months old. He's clever as anything. Before the age of six months I had him trained to sit, stay, lie down, bark and come on command. He is super strong, he needs off leash time, at least a few times a week if not every day. He gets out twice a day. He loves kids and dogs but he can play rough with dogs. He will chew anything he can find he pulls on the leash real hard, still training. Im sure all dogs are similar but this breed needs mental stimulation and off leash time, they are athletic dogs. Great dog, very loving, funny, protective. We love our Tyson to bits. One of the best breeds.
@@justcallmemax4222 it's true they are a very friendly dog, too friendly a lot of the time. I've seen videos of thieves literally picking up staffies from a backgarden and walking off with them. However, if you get them young you can, like any dog, train them. I've trained mine to bark on command, i have him trained to 'attack' a toy on command, and release on command. He is very alert, when walking at night he will posture amd prick his ears up when he sees someone walking towards us. Im planning on testing my dogs instincts when he's a bit older. He has shown some good protective signs e.g. barkig when i am joking with my fiance (pretending to rough her up), he gets in between us and gets all serious, alertness when someone knocks on the door etc. He's only young, theyre good signs though. Check out the link below. There are plenty of examples of staffies doing protwction work. kzhead.info/sun/lqiwqdmnjYqCfJ8/bejne.html

Recently got one was told it was a pit mix but I've had dogs all my life and when I saw it I knew it wasn't a pit that it was a Staffordshire she is the most loving fat headed old girl you would ever meet, loves to roll on you and get tummy 💕 love, Lol! Got her after losing a pit/mix that literally broke my heart, swore I wouldn't have another dog but my wife found this one up for adoption I didn't want to love her but I do, she is so funny and I can't imagine her ever being anything but loving.
