Welcome to RidgeLife. In this video, we look at each step in building a log home or cabin and how much it costs . We give the total cost Ann’s breakdown each step including materials and labor. We acted as our own general contractor over the build of our custom designed Honest Abe Log Homes using their Genesis log system that consists of 12”x6” Appalachian style timbers interlocked for a secure and safe fit.

  • Geez, my father took most of the logs off his property he used to build his 2,300 sq ft home. Peeled and cured himself. Some came from the local lumber company in town. Has finish walkout basement, vaulted ceilings, open loft with masterbedroom off of loft, 3 bath home, 3 bedrooms. All cabinets made from Heartwood cedar, which also came off his property. 2 fireplaces, main floor, and in the finished basement. front porch total length of front of the home, back porch off main floor, length of the home, patio off master bedroom, upper lower staircases heartwood cedar cut in half log treads. All for under 45k. Just shows what you can do if you're willing to put in the work and take a couple of years to build it mostly on your own, the savings are huge.

  • W TN is a lot warmer than MT. In our area our winter daytime temperatures are between Zero and 25. Y’all don’t get the snow either. Our Log home is an oversized Montana Rancher. We’re too old and have too much arthritis to handle stairs, so our house is a single story

  • Great video... It was interesting comparing notes with your build and a similar one I completed about 18 years ago. Ours was a panelised home, similar design, and being a geek with tractor toys I did all that part myself along with some finish work and insulation and painting. Wife and I did probably 1/3 of the build and farmed out the trades, yet with our 2,000 sf build w/walk-out basement ended up very close to your final price. Should make mention your final cost didn't include land purchase which most would require. We bought our land 22 years prior and waited till it was paid off before building. Great job, looks very nice and seems reasonably priced.

Sure does have a nice setting in the woods ,like how you kept utilities Ac/heat and thankless water heater on the outside, thumbs up 👍

  • Thanks for your great video. You did a great job. So that $250,000. Did that include the Lands cost. ? As it is a small 1400 S.F. house, so maybe the land was included in your total too. Tennessee R.E. is not expensive. Plus built a stick built 2 or 3 car garage out of wood first, and sided the front, and two sides you see with the timber look siding to match your house, and maybe use real T1-11 Ply with groves every foot, or maybe smooth, with board and batton strips on the back. That garage he had built was kind of pricey for a small all metal garage. But maybe grandma does not need lots of storage. As no need for a foundation on that small metal garage, just the small 4" thick slab floor. As this garage system is light, I dought any reason for a 12" inch wide x 6" inch thick foundation. But if wood, and big better wood trusses, that are spaning a much larger distance, as a 2 or 3 car garage, you need a foundation to hold it all up. But when done right, it would match the house. Do the same roof angle, and metal roofing. You could even have storage built in above the garage, or a kids apartment, or man cave, grand kids play room, ect. Maybe frame it a steeper pitch roof to get more space up there, and maybe a few dormers with windows facing the front. Gingerbread look. Then you can have a shop, and storage using one bay of the garage, with the stairs to go up stairs, and 2 spaces for cars or truck. Or use some of that one bay for a home office, or the upstairs for that, and put in exterior stairs to go up to it. As that Big Lot you will need a riding mower and park it in the garage. Nice clean easy lot to maintain. Nice clean job, and nice utilities shown. You paid to much for those cabinets I saw in the kitchen. Maybe the granite was a fair price, if that was a total installed price on the granite. That is a small house at 1400 .S.F. so maybe it did include the land for this $250,000. ? I usually build for resale. So I would have built the House bigger, maybe 2000. S.F.+ , 4 bedrooms, and a 3 car garage, at $300,000.+ total. But a bit more if making a big room above the garage, and making it real nice, and adding Dormer windows above the garage as a apartment, or a office. As that big attic room above the garage may add a extra $20,000. To its cost. Or make it even better, as it is a good place for a Son, or grandsons Apartment.

  • Tim- Amazing job, possibly one of the BEST breakdowns of what's involved in building a log home. I went on Honest Abe's website, but I can not find a Dakota listed even if I use the search bar. Am I missing something? Can you post a link directly to that home?

    • @Lynette Agueda it's true though, you guys have higher inflation. When you come to states like Colorado ( or Montana as many do) it's like if I went back and time and bought a house. My money would go farther. Which unfortunately we can not afford because our income in this state is not as high. Thus you do two things, take homes from us that we can't buy, and cause the housing prices to rise to a point where we can no longer afford them, but you can.

  • Hi, wonderful video series on the log cabin build. I have a question regarding one of the line items if you don't mind answering. On the electrical section you stated that it was about $10,000. Was that just to run power to the house or did that include wiring the inside of the house and all the lighting, switches, receptacles, etc?

  • Thank you for a great video. My wife has been stressing about us having our own cabin built and hopfully after she sees this video she'll be a little bit less aprehensive. We are not from Tennessee and have no idea how to go about finding honest and reliable subcontractors. We haven't even found our property yet so I don't really know what part of the state we'll settle on. We have looked at several properties just sout of Nashville and also farther east in the Sieverville area. Do you have any advice for finding individual contractors(land clearing and grading, foundation, plumbers, electricians etc). Thank you for any advice you can offer. Howard

    • Honest Abe Log Homes helped us find the sub contractors for log specific work and work they has experience in our area. We then spoke with other contractors and got an idea of who they use locally. We then went to facebook groups to get opinions on their work.

  • This is an incredibly informative video. Thank you for sharing. I do wonder about 250,000 for a building which is engineered logs on the first floor only, and otherwise stick built. And none of this included the cost of the land. But it's very nice.
