A mobile detailing business is one of the best businesses you can start with little money and no experience. Today, we’ll hear from Kevin Lieu, owner of Slide In Mobile Detailing, and learn how he started his $12,500 per month car detailing business.
With Zippity you are able to run your entire mobile detailing business right from your phone! Request a demo today by visiting "www.getzippity.com/upflip_det..." and use the code “UPFLIP” to receive a 50% discount on your first month!
Kevin sold insurance prior to becoming an entrepreneur. He started Slide In as a side hustle on the weekends, investing just $500 to get started. His business quickly blew up and he has since quit his day job to focus on his mobile car wash business full time, with an average revenue of between $10,000 and $12,000 every month.
In this video, we’ll get the inside scoop on what it takes to start a successful mobile car detailing business. We’ll learn how much it cost Kevin to get Slide In up and running, what equipment and tools you need to get started, and his strategies for building a customer base. Along with that, he’ll share how much it cost him to get started, and some advice for how to make the most of your investment if you’re starting with a limited budget.
Starting a mobile detailing business is just the first step, of course. We’ll see Kevin’s routines, systems, and day-to-day operations that have helped him grow his revenue. He’ll also share what software and tools he uses to manage the business and how those have contributed to his success.

  • A protip for the guy seeing his vacuum technique - I have the same vacuum nozzles & those sharp ends do scratch these seating surfaces, especially leather. You can sand those sharp edges off with varying grades of sandpaper (like sanding paint) and get a much safe vacuum nozzle setup for this issue. The finer you go with the sandpaper the smoother you get that nozzle at the end. One detailer to another. Cheers!

  • Upflip, this is such a great video as always, but I’m just a little confused on the math. He says a couple times that he makes $10-12k a month or around $150k/ year in revenue, then says that he pays employees, which he has multiple, $25/ hour, has insurance costs, overhead, etc. But the margins are 70%. If he had even one employee working full time with him, 6 days a week, that would be over $50k/ year in payroll alone, not even factoring in FICA, Social Security, etc. So what am I missing here?

  • Here is my little suggestion to improve the channel. Find what small businesses each city / state needs to give an idea to those viewers trying to start something with a less chance of failing. For the app, it can display what I mentioned above. Some kind of search engine. Also, I love the idea of your channel and have been watching quietly for a while but now thinking maybe we need a channel like yours in the True North, Canada!

  • When leasing a space for business, keep in mind that this is only temporary. Your goal is to own your own building when you are financially able afford it. If you are renting, the landlord can raise your rent or not renew your lease at all. This can have dire consequence to your business. If you own the building, not only will you avoid these problems but when you retire, you can sell the business together with the building; or sell the business and lease the building to the new owner. Either way, you walk away with a good retirement income.

    • So true. I know someone who does emissions testing only. For 20 years, his rent was $400/mo. Owner sold the property and his rent is now $1500!!Still low enough but that is a huge increase from one month to the next. Over $10k for the year.

I know it takes time to detail cars outside and inside, but what about a break down of a 4 hour detail on a car? Can you a time frame break down of how long it takes per part of the detail process. Especially a 4 hour detail, I'm still trying to process a 4 hour detail broken down as to what it fully entails.

  • Subscription plans are great for a business. If he ever wants to sell the business, that is the only thing that’s worth buying. He would have created a brand and recurring source of income for the business. Otherwise, anyone can start detailing and adding “one off” customers. I like that he does the subscription plans, and with time the 20% retention will increase.

Used to work for a body shop and dealer so I have enough experience doing the work, obviously, willing to learn more. That been said, could you possibly ask the detailer you interview how did they figure out how much to charge per job or how they price the service they offer? Also, how they go about maybe doing it out their garage as a start? How will they market that? And lastly, how would they go about asking clients to use their power and water if they don’t have the means at first to buy water tank and generator? Thanks
