As someone who was a huge Ronaldo fan in the Real Madrid era around 2014-2015, I can say Ronaldo has really fallen off due to his primadonna nature and I can't say I'm a fan of him anymore. He is still incredibly skilled, but Messi is much humbler and isn't out to fight with coaches/teammates/staff at the clubs he plays for. The whole Man United drama really soured my opinion of him. I have a lot more respect for Messi than Ronaldo now and do think Messi is the better player overall, especially now that time has passed and we can see how Messi has evolved.

When you apply the eye test Messi is also the better player. He can score, but also build up towards a goal. He can dictate the game but also finish it. Also assisted a lot (but not as much as Messi and not of the quality of Messi's assists). When you look at awards and titles, Messi also wins. He has a world cup, most trophies in history of the game. Messi has 7 balon d'Ors, the most ever. He scored 91 goals in a year. Nobody has ever reached that number and he didn't do that as a classical striker. He also assisted a lot.
