I remember when we talked about something of French history with friends, my German friend at one point said "omg you're so patriotic" as it was a reproach while it's not something you're supposed to be ashamed of...very very sad situation for them.

The word alone leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of a lot of people, although it is as you said nothing to be ashamed of. In an ideal world every person of every country would be a Patriot. Most people (in Germany at least) tend to confuse Patriotism with Nationalism or even Chauvinism,

  • It's interesting though, how easy us Romanians talk about Communism, which is a big trauma in our collective mind, and much more recent than WW2 (in which we were also on the Nazi side). We joke about it, laugh about it, argue about it, but it's definitely discussed. I think in Romania, even though it's considered a backwards country in the western world, people speak OPENLY about almost everything, wether they agree or not with one another. In Germany, not so much. As you can see from the video too, Germans are much more reserved, they like to keep a distance, even from their friends and family. For example, when i was living in Romania, i was riding the bus from work one day and the lady sitting beside me striked up a conversation. She told me how hard her life is, that her pension is too small, that times are hard and our country is going to shit, she asked me how old i was, where i worked and how much i earned. And i told her. And it was fine, just a discussion on my way home. I miss the transparency and warmth of the people back home.

    • Christian Dürnberger ...most US citizens don’t have an issue with talking about 9/11. But if you ask them questions, questioning the story that was sold to them by the US gov and the media, then most will get really bent out of shape. The truth hurts. For example, ask them how many World Trade Center buildings collapsed on that day, and most will *_only_* say two. Two planes, two buildings...right? Nope, three buildings. Building 7 collapsed without being hit by anything, but had a small fire on two floors, yet it magically collapsed in a very controlled manner, just like the twin towers collapsed in a very controlled manner. And why did building 7 even have a fire if it was not hit by anything? And why did the owner of the World Trade Center, Larry Silverstein, put an additional insurance policy on the property specifically covering terrorist attacks by airplane, worth $7 billion dollars just six weeks prior to 9/11?

In general I think it's a common misconception that Germans don't like to talk about this topic. This was true for the generation of our grandparents and was for a good reason. However for the generations after it was an important topic to talk about (and still is). You would probably be surprised how much Germans talk about it. Germans have found quite a special way to deal with their past and that usually doesn't include keeping calm about these topics. I think we should do an episode about that soon.

Das ist zu sagen, Small Talk mit fremden Leute soll immer positive und nicht privat sein. Themen wie Wetter, Sport, Verkehr, Hobbies sind zum beispiel sehr geeignet für Small talk. Of course that always depends on the people talking to each other. And that's a bit of a shame since I love to discuss stuff and simply hearing different opinions - even if I don't agree.

Or about repression which Stalin carried out in the territory of Kazakhstan, because the Kazakh people suffered from this. And of course we don't prefer to speak about money, politics, health.

    • I'd rather say: There are opinions that will be challenged by the majority of people you voice them to. It's unlikely that they'll judge you as a person for having one of those opinions - but they will keep questioning and critisising until either of you sees the other's point of view or you agree to disagree. People not agreeing with you doesn't make it a taboo - it just means you don't fit the opinion of the majority.

Sex is talked about pretty openly with friends, but not at work obviously. I wouldn't bring up Hitler or WW2 with Germans unless I knew them well. I think it would be rude.

    @BlackAmberMoon@BlackAmberMoon7 жыл бұрын
    • I think generally topics of politics are more private in the US than in Germany. At least that's what I heard from many Americans. Whereby in Germany you could meet a new person and discuss about political topics right away.

      @EasyGerman@EasyGerman7 жыл бұрын
    • +Barbara Ann _Here in the USA political conversations are difficult, especially in the current political climate._ It could be my corrupt memory, or maybe I was too young and naive to read into all of the political subtext, but it seemed politics used to be an EASY topic to discuss maybe twenty years ago. I believe the current divisiveness originated in Bush's statements post-9/11 with his, "you're either with us, or against us" slant on patriotism. With the current administration I don't know if "conservatism" or "liberalism" is really even the discussion anymore. It's now a struggle over whether we get our facts from reality or from Trump's mouth. +Barbara Ann _In the liberal parts of the country, if you are conservative or religious you can be shunned._ I don't agree with this. There are both Christians and conservatives that coexist just fine in "blue states". It's more a matter of the specific opinions you hold. Or whether you think your opinions should be forcefully applied to everyone else.

    • Regisseur95 - No, that's not true. I talk about religion and politics with a lot of people, but you have to be careful to be respectful of other's opinions. Americans have very strong positions on both politics and religion, generally. I don't think that's the case with most Europeans.

They joke and laugh about his latest mistakes, but as an American who does not and will never claim Trump as president, it is painful to talk about him or even hear his name. So "Trump" is a Tabuthema for me, but not for my German students. A similar experience happened when talking about the Ku Klux Klan, and I had to use the Nazis as an example of how talking about the KKK is not a humorous topic (b/c he was laughing about their clothing and didn't know all the heinous crimes they did (and still do)).

      @Hackmannhasstaudi@Hackmannhasstaudi7 жыл бұрын
    • +Memoria James By your statement i can already guess in what kind of environment you lived in and taught in Germany. Most germans think Trump is stupid and awkward, but (so far) see him more positively compared to George Bush for example as we Germans don't like warmongering and war in general. If Trump should ever act like a neo-conservative and invade or destabilizes countries (like President Obama and Secretary Clinton did with Libya as well), then most germans will think just as negative about him as George Bush. Something americans need to realize about Germany is that asking questions on the street of left-wing cities like Berlin or well.. many big cities in general don't show "how germans think". This is just as biased and silly as if someone presents the opinions of rural bavarian villages as "that's what germans think". Too bad nobody in the media realized this yet eventhough it's common sense.

  • Wikipedia writes about taboo: "The meaning of the word "taboo" has been somewhat expanded in the social sciences to strong prohibitions relating to any area of human activity or custom that is sacred or forbidden based on moral judgment, religious beliefs, or cultural norms.[3] "Breaking a taboo" is usually considered objectionable by society in general, not merely a subset of a culture." So anything that is "based on moral judgment, religious beliefs, or cultural norms." is "ein Tabuthema". Now because religious freedom, freedom sexual orientation and beliefs is guaranteed and protected by the constitution those are no more taboo. Though from my personal perspective parts of german society is still very very conservative and there one would find many taboos. And also I am sure that many of the people who said that do not have any "Tabuthema" actually have at least one :) My personal opinion though :)
