    • *Kratos started out as a cog in the Spartan war machine. He was - for all intents and purposes - more a conqueror than he was a soldier, driven by constant battle and consumed by the ever-distant next victory.* *His betrayal by Ares transformed him into a pawn for the Olympians as he desperately sought to free himself of his guilty visions, and into a slave of vengeance as he broiled with hatred for his erstwhile patron... These new motivators saw him go anywhere, do anything; recover a divine super weapon from an impenetrable stronghold at the ends of the earth; claw his way out of the underworld; kill a God!...* *But the Olympians could not cure Kratos of his memories... Ares' death did not bring him peace; only an empty space where the need for revenge had once sat... and his being uplifted to Godhood was poor compensation for what he had lost, despite the great power and influence it granted him...* *So Kratos fell back on conquest to try to fill the void in his soul. As the God of War, he spurred Sparta on the offensive, and washed over city after city... but even this old obsession now bored him... and it stoked the paranoia of Zeus - who already feared him for killing Ares - to the point of madness and betrayal...* *When Zeus tricked him into surrendering his power to the Blade of Olympus and then killed him with it, vengeance took up its old place in Kratos' heart, and he repeated his feats of old; clawing his way back from death; crossing the world seizing ancient powers; killing Gods... Vengeance grew in him and consumed him the way conquest once had, and Kratos made war on Olympus, and was eventually successful in exacting vengeance yet again, killing Zeus...* *But then everyone who had wronged him was dead... his world was blistered and burned at his feet, by his hand... he couldn't die... and his family still haunted his thoughts...* *What was an old God to do now that all his wars were done and all the wounds on his flesh were scarring over, even as those on his soul continued to bleed? What was he to do as he slowly sobered to the fact that he had come out of his bloody quest no better than he had gone in, and that he had ruined almost everything for next to nothing?* *Kratos walked away, exhausted and raw though he was. He left his world and found a new one, and slowly agonized over his past and the hole in his chest as he tried to build a new life, there. He met Fey, fell in love, maybe felt some small measure of solace as he was given a second chance to have a family...* *His character change may have been sudden in that he's much more outwardly stoic, now, than he was up through most of God of War 3, but I don't think it was all that drastic at its core.* *Kratos is still a warrior, but one who has finally learned from and come to peace with his pain rather than simply lashing out in reaction to it... and - by virtue of Atreus - he is now a warrior who has something real to fight for; something real to lose; something he's lost before and is desperate not to lose again... Something he was willing to scale mountains and travel worlds for; confess his sins and make and break peace with Gods to save; defy his old nature and reinvent himself to foster and preserve.* *The nightmare future of the 41st millennium, Mankind teeters upon the brink of extinction. The galaxy-spanning Imperium of Man is beset on all sides by ravening aliens, and threatened from within by malevolent creatures and heretic rebels. • I loved how for the most part, Achilles wasn't portrayed as supernatural. He was portrayed more like a superior athlete, the same way Michael Jordan could make the best in the world look foolish in comparison. Achilles was just that bit faster, bit stronger, bit more explosive, with better reflexes and better anticipation. I loved the way they made him move.

    @Mububban23@Mububban234 жыл бұрын
    • Exactly. While this is in no way "accurate" to the Illiad as a source material, it does feel a little more "real" because the mystical elements of the original are not here. We don't have the gods fighting on either side of the war and all the supernatural forces at play. As you said, Achilles here was just a *really* good fighter, superior than his contemporaries and more highly skilled, but just as mortal as the next man.

Men rise and fall like the winter wheat, but these names will never die. Let them say I lived in the time of Hector, tamer of horses, let them say I lived in the time of Achilles" And here 3200 years later those names live as strong as ever.

    • I literally could not agree with you more. This movie is an epic based on a real epic. 300 is some modern art computer-comic book cluster fuck with no real heart. It's crazy how polarizing Troy(the movie) is. I rank it up there with Gladiator and Braveheart as an alltime great. 300 was entertaining but isn't even in the same stratosphere. Yet there are people who hate Troy and love 300. That's what makes the World... but I don't get it.

Braveheart was also perfectly done, although it kinda made the English look like monsters :D, but it was an amazingly emotional movie. I would also add some older masterpieces, such as Ben hur(1959), Spartacus(1960), the Message(1976), Cleopatra(1963) and many other magnificient historical movies. I guess such decent movies aren't considered profitable for movie makers, therefore no other good movie comes out anymore, i barely go to cinema nowadays!

    • Achilles changes a lot throughout the film. How does that fit in your narrative? He goes from only wanting glory and to be remembered as a good soldier to falling in love and wanting to live a peaceful life, from laughing at his opponent to respecting him (hector). This film isn’t about the people, it’s about the prophecy. It is very easy to defeat enemies when the only thing you do is train for war, while others have to work and take care of their families. It is all right to want to live in peace and being forgotten in history. Achilles learnt this too late, and it was precisely when he was helping briseilles up that he kneels exposing his weak point. He’s “Achille’s heel” becomes caring for others. THAT is poetry.

BOURNE vs Desh is probably one of the best hand to hand combat fight scene that was ever filmed and performed by a American, with no extreme shaky cam or cut editing, you can scale what going on at all times. This action scene, there is a cut and edit every single time brad pitt swings his sword, it's very not bad but it's not great either. One of the best choreographed fight scene imo, of all time is Jet Li as nameless vs Donnie Yen as Sky in Hero. AMERICANS can't make a scene like that...

    • Homer in the Iliad and the Odyssey speaks only of Danaans, Achaeans, Argians and not of Greeks. The Hellenes (tribe of Southern Thessaly also called Argos Pelasgians), at his time, did not constitute yet a people or a Nation (Thucydides I,3). He affirms in the Iliad that "Zeus is Pelasgians and dodonean" (XVI,234). Precisely these Pelasgians (🇦🇱) were considered by all the ancient Greek authors as "the first inhabitants of Greece" before "The arrival of the Hellenes (🇬🇷)"! Another word that was misunderstood or glossed over. Indeed the Greeks arrived from somewhere because they were not indigenous. As they did not come from the North ( one wanted to make us believe the opposite), they could only be foreigners coming from elsewhere. It is this elsewhere which is difficult to define very precisely. But the legends, which are only embellished, idealized or metaphorized historical facts, give us some precious indications on the first foreign ethnic groups having occupied the country of the Pelasgians: the Danaans (Egyptians from whom the Dorians descend), the Cadmeans (Phoenicians) and the Pelopides (Assyrians). Among the peoples of archaic Greece the Ionians, Aeolians and Arcadians were descendants of the Pelasgians, indigenous populations conquered by the Hellenic invaders: they could claim to be indigenous populations. Now Herodotus explains very well that the Ionians were Pelasgians who, after having rubbed shoulders with the Greeks and learned their language, became full-fledged Hellenes... The Ionians were thus a fraction of the Pelasgians people (🇦🇱) having adopted the civilization of the Hellenic invaders (🇬🇷), assimilated their culture and integrated their ethnicity ( Herodotus I,56,57,58/VIII,44 ). Etc ...

A battle like the battle of the black water in GoT would not have happened since the army that was landing could just sail to a place where the enemy was not and land safely. And the defenders knew this. This is why for example why the anglo-saxons at the battle of Maldon let the vikings land. They knew the vikings would just land somewhere else if they didn't. So they let them land uncontested before battling them.

    • Who has bagged Pitt for this? I’m telling you, as a Greek who’s read the Iliad 100 times from the first page to the last since I was 5, this is exactly what Achilles was like in the story. There hasn’t been a better interpretation before this or since then. The only thing wrong here was that Achilles was way younger, about 16 when he entered and 26 when he died, but that’s a small price, considering the war in the movie doesn’t seem like it lasts a decade.

    • Back then, if you want glory and to decide the fate of a battle, you introduce yourself and issue a challenge of a duel. It was a way for the winner of the duel to gain glory and fame, and for the soldiers, allow the fighting to stop and have them rest for a few moments and finish the battle for the day. It also allows them to set terms and conditions and boast their family lineage. Here's one of Book 7 with my bro Diomedes vs Glaucus strait from th Iliad. Now Diomedes and Glaucus, son of Hippolochus, met in the space between the armies, eager for the fight. When they had come within range, the son of Tydeus, he of the loud war-cry, called: ‘What mighty man are you, among mortals? I have never seen you on the field of honour before today, yet facing my long-shadowed spear, you show greater daring than all the rest. Unhappy are those whose sons meet my fury. But if you be one of the gods from heaven, I will not fight with the immortals. Not even mighty Lycurgus, son of Dryas, survived his war with the gods for long. He chased the nymphs, who nursed frenzied Dionysus, through the sacred hills of Nysa, and struck by the murderous man’s ox-goad their holy wands fell from their hands. But Dionysus fleeing, plunged beneath the waves, trembling and terrified by the man’s loud cries, and Thetis took him to her breast. Then the gods who take their ease were angered by Lycurgus, and Zeus blinded him. So that, hated by the immortals, he soon died. No way then would I wish to oppose the blessed gods. But if you are mortal, and eat the food men grow, come on, and meet the toils of fate the sooner.’ ‘Brave Diomedes’, Hippolochus’ son replied, ‘why ask my lineage? Like the generations of leaves are those of men. The wind blows and one year’s leaves are scattered on the ground, but the trees bud and fresh leaves open when spring comes again. So a generation of men is born as another passes away. Still if you wish to know my lineage, listen well to what others know already. There’s a town called Ephyre in a corner of Argos, the horse-pasture, and a man lived there called Sisyphus, the craftiest of men, a son of Aeolus. He had a son called Glaucus, and Glaucus was father of peerless Bellerophon, to whom the gods gave beauty and every manly grace. But Zeus made him subject to King Proetus, who was stronger and plotted against him, and drove him from Argive lands. Now Proetus’ wife, the fair Anteia, longed madly for Bellerephon, and begged him to lie with her in secret, but wise Bellerephon was a righteous man and could not be persuaded. So she wove a web of deceit, and said to King Proetus: ‘Kill this Bellerephon, who tried to take me by force, or die in the doing of it.’ The king was angered by her words. He would not kill Bellerephon, as his heart shrank from murder, but he packed him off to Lycia, and scratching many deadly signs on a folded tablet, gave him that fatal token, and told him to hand it to the Lycian king, his father-in-law, so to engineer his death. Bellerephon went to Lycia escorted by peerless gods, and when he reached the streams of Xanthus the king of great Lycia welcomed him with honour, entertaining him for nine days, and sacrificing nine oxen. But when rosy-fingered Dawn lit the tenth day his host questioned him, and asked what token he brought him from his son-in-law Proetus. On first deciphering the fatal message, he ordered Bellerephon to kill the monstrous Chimaera, spawned by gods and not men, that had a lion’s head, goat’s body and serpent’s tail, and breathed out deadly blasts of scorching fire. But Bellerephon slew her, guided by the gods. Next he was sent against the notorious Solymi, and fought, he said, the mightiest battle he ever fought. Then thirdly he slaughtered the Amazons, women the equal of men. The king planned a deadly ruse for his return, staging an ambush by the pick of the Lycian warriors. But not one of them returned: the peerless Bellerephon killed them all. The king then realised he was a true son of the gods, and offered him his daughter and half of his kingdom, to stay. The Lycians moreover marked out for him an estate of the first rank, with tracts of orchards and plough-land for his delight. The lady bore Bellerephon, that warlike man, three children, Isander, Hippolochus and Laodameia. Zeus the Counsellor slept with Laodameia and she bore godlike Sarpedon, now a bronze-clad warrior. But the time came when Bellerephon too was loathed by the gods, and wandered off alone over the Aleian plain, eating his heart away and shunning the ways of men. Ares, unwearied by war, killed his son Isander, battling with the glorious Solymi; and Laodameia was slain in anger by Artemis of the Golden Reins. Hippolochus remained and fathered me, and from him I claim descent. He sent me here to Troy and charged me earnestly to be the best and bravest, and not bring shame on my ancestors the best men in Ephyre and all broad Lycia. Such is my lineage, from that blood am I sprung.’ Diomedes, of the loud war-cry rejoiced at these words. Planting his spear in the fertile earth, he spoke to the Lycian general courteously: ‘You are, then, a friend of long-standing to my father’s house, since noble Oeneus once entertained peerless Bellerephon in his palace, and kept him there twenty days. Moreover they exchanged fine friendship gifts. Oeneus gave him a bright scarlet belt, and Bellerephon replied with a two-handled gold cup, which was there in the palace when I came away. But Tydeus my father I scarce remember, since I was a little child when he left, when the Achaean warriors died at Thebes. So I will be your good friend at home in Argos, and you will be mine in Lycia, should I come to visit. Let us avoid each other’s spear in the battle, there are plenty more Trojans and their worthy allies for me to slay, if a god lets my feet overtake them, and many Greeks for you to kill, if you can. Let us exchange our armour then, that those around may know that our grandfather’s friendship makes us two friends.’ At this, the two leapt down from their chariots, and clasped each other’s hands as a pledge of their good faith. But Zeus, the son of Cronos, robbed Glaucus of his wits, for he gave Diomedes, son of Tydeus, golden armour for bronze, a hundred oxen’s worth for that of nine.

Homer spends a lot of time emphasizing that a man's actions in life "echo in eternity" as General Maximus would say. Achilles is the hero par excellence of this ideal, illustrated perfectly when he has the exchange with the young boy prior to fighting Boagrius. Athenian boy: "That thessalonian you are fighting, he's the biggest man I've ever seen! I wouldn't want to fight him." Achilles: "And that is why no one will remember your name."
