Pakistani Police Bust Me... Eating Fish! (A Warning for Tourists)

Can't a man just vlog and eat fish in peace in Pakistan? While eating in the Sikh holy city of Nankana Sahib, an unidentified security service agent finds me in a restaurant and reports me to the local Police station. Then a Punjab police officer sits next to me and forces me to ride back to my hotel with him.
According to that Punjab police officer, the protection of foreign tourists is their responsibility. However, I don't think there's any rule like that in Nankana Sahib. The only places that require you to travel with a security guard in Pakistan are, as far as I know, southern Punjab (below Multan) and Balochistan.
If you're going to Nankana Sahib, read my travel guide blog.karlrock.com/nankana-sah....

Not an insult, the same thing happened to me working a night shift for 2yrs but man you've aged a LOT in just 6-12 months. Could be the camera, lighting, etc. but you need less stress, better air, better water or something. Wouldn't say anything if I didn't want to help. Something to consider.

You have to report to the local police station when you visit the city and inform them where you will be staying. Earlier they always used to put one plainclothesman to either accompany you or follow you discretely. Same happened in pakistan to Indian Nationals. Since Karl is living in India for long time and married to an Indian Im surprised this is the first time its happened to him.

    • well, any flap, especially an attacked foreign visitor, presumably makes the local police look bad, their area unsafe, etc. seems to me they were just worried about their job performance and couldnt care less what he's there to do. rushed him to finish eating before he's even had a bite, when he emphatically stressed to them he did not desire any security. probably his whole trip was just hanging around this place and that, this is a major upset... it is them valuing their own job performance over someone else's freedom, even over their own area's tourism value, as this kind of thing obviously is unwelcomed and can ruin a trip

One can verify first if the person is genuinely a police or a government official. Sure there are shady officials in every country who would be a risk as well, but judging by the way that police was acting, I believe Karl should have taken his advice and should have been more careful and compliant. Being cautious and safe is definitely important, but if one doesn't know the area/environment well, it is better to stick to places where there is less risk and danger. • Karl. I understand you trust the city. I'm sure most of the locals are flattered to receive such trust from tourists. But it seems like Pakistani police and authorities is taking extra measures to ensure guests have a good time and to promote tourism. There are bad people in every country and city. Police best interest to look after you. You represent 99% to 100% tourists in the area. Anything bad happens to you is super bad tourism for them. Either bad experience or whatever extreme mugged and killed on the streets. I don't think the government wants to stomach either outcome. Imagine the news gets out. A peaceful tourist went about his day to get to know the city. Gets mugged and stabbed. Returns flight to his family in a casket. But it was cool to see the mutual respect from Karl and police to Karl.

  • They identified themselves, the police was polite, professional, stated their purpose (to provide you with security), offered to buy you food (because you are a guest), gave you a trip around town, drove you back to the hotel and said nice things about you. I'm really not sure where or how you can find fault in such hospitality.

    • True. But in unsafe corrupt places, sometimes the police or govt officials are also the ones you need to watch out for. Simply following any individual claiming to be “police” can also be naive. Which may be why he had his guard up with the man claiming to be protecting him and ultimately asked to see his official credentials before jumping into a car with him

  • The security is not to protect you, it’s there to protest their own interests - basically to watch over you for their own purposes. It doesn’t matter what you tell them you are there for because if you weren’t there for what you said, you wouldn’t tell him. He just gave you the “diplomatic” answer.
