  • About the talk, my dad sat both me and my sister down when she started driving to do it. We're white, but as a lawyer who did pro bono cases when he could, he had defended tons of black, hispanic, and/or disabled people who were injured in interactions with law enforcement on the road. This problem is so pervasive that he donated years of his life just helping black people get coverage for injuries they got in traffic stops. D'angelo Wallace here on youtube talked about his experience with traffic stops too.

    • @Evertheoptimist: Please let your dad know that HE IS APPRECIATED. Being Black, with some troublesome legal issue, & having someone in your father's position take the case w/o pay was a pretty HUMBLING experience for me, personally. I'm sure it has occurred to you that when it comes to parents, you hit the LOTTERY ! 💙🗿

  • I remember the first "Talk" when I was sitting on my parents' bed at 7 years old. It came right after the "don't do drugs because they're bad for you conversation". I didn't have any basis to understand race or discrimination at that age. Since in school history was always taught slaves --> civil war --> Martin Luther King Jr. --> everyone loves each other, I couldn't recognize that race was still an issue. Yet my parents had to explain to these naive little 7 and 9-year-olds (my brother) that if the cops ever come we have to be quiet. Even if our white friends talk back to the police, we listen. They made us practice staying silent, and when we tried to joke around like kids do their eyes got dark. Our parents always wanted to just let us be kids, but in that conversation, we couldn't. At seven and nine, my brother and I were forced to learn the wisdom of an adult trained to deescalate situations, because it was very likely our lives depended on it.

I'm a typical white guy and my parents had this EXACT same talk the OP spoke about when I was 10yo. Same goes for all my white-kid school yard friends. And guess what? I tried explaining the importance and necessity of "the TALK" in POC's households to a friend but she either could not or would not grasp the concept. I def lost respect for her that day. I spent literally hours trying to explain many seemingly simple factors of race in America. She refused to believe that she benefited from "White Privilege" simply bc she isn't rich. I think a lot of white ppl get caught up on semantics since the word privilege bc it's often synonymous W/ someone of great wealth. "White Advantage" doesn't sound weighty enough for the message it needs to convey. Maybe there's something btwn those two words?

We don’t have an advantage, we have have an unspoken pass to freedom just because of an unearned roll of the genetic dice. We didn’t earn being white and we don’t even notice that it helps us. Some people will never learn until it affects them personally and that is why we struggle to take one step forward.

    • @@kennyorlikowski7704 What you're saying is that there is an observable correlation with higher minimum wage and higher unemployment. Now I can tell you this is not true, given that both figures can be looked up. Why have you not looked them up? Do you have an aversion to research? It _might_ be true in an absolute monopoly if there was only one employer in the entire world, which would be just the opposite of an environment with small businesses. But first, the highest the unemployment rate has gone in the entire history of the US (in the time we have been keeping records of it) was during the Great Depression which ran from 1929 to 1933. The Federal Minimum Wage did not exist until 1938 when it was established by the Fair Labor Standards Act. This did _not_ coincide with an immediate surge in the unemployment rate; not even among small businesses. Now why are you citing "Capitalism 101" instead of "Economics 101?"

Its tragic that I hate riding in the car with my deaf brother at night out of fear they will be upset that he wouldn't follow police orders ( we're black, so things would escalate from there) and potentially harm him. He would be defenseless in that scenario because his signing is hindered by his cerebral palsy. The police are more than intimidating. • When we empathize with someone, we become aware of just how similar we are to that person. We realize that he or she may feel the way we feel and may react the way we react. Empathy helps us to see that all people, no matter what their background may be, are part of the human family. The more we focus on how similar they are to us, the less likely we will be to judge them negatively.Empathy will also help us to respect others. Anne-Marie, from Senegal, once looked down on people who came from so-called lower castes. She explains how empathy helped her: “When I saw the hardships suffered by those who belonged to lower castes, I asked myself how I would feel in their position. This moved me to question the validity of my supposed higher status-one that I had neither chosen nor earned.” Yes, if we strive to understand another person’s struggles, we are more likely to empathize rather than to criticize

  • "THE TALK" At my age, I have heard and seen just about everything and nothing really phases me. I have been awarded from my previous job in law enforcement for being able to perform above and beyond the call of duty under extremely tense and stressful situations. To my parents' frustration, I would refuse to cry while getting a spanking fore, I believed that what they were trying to do was break me, make me weak, and be a crybaby. (That was not going to happen) But when I heard that little girl reciting, "The Talk". it brought a bit of a tear, this 69 yr. old eyes seldom performed.😢 I was taught to pull over, turn off the engine, put the keys on the dashboard, and stick both hands out of the car window. From there speak with respect and follow orders. Don't argue about the citation if you're given one, you'll have your day in court. As a pastor (retired) I counseled many children independently and in group and "The Talk" was often appropriately given at the request or permission of the parent(s) Thru, the years we had reports of some of our teens being stopped by the police but we were thankful there were NO tragic outcomes. Time signature; app. 21;47 (In case you don't have time to watch the entire show.) 🙏🏼

Either LinkedIn realized that a lot of people didn't know you can write your own actual title without pulling it from a pre-existing list, or they ported to the US the system they'd already been using in Europe from the beginning.

I told her to never pull over in a dark place, and always wait until she is in a well-lit populated area before stopping her car. If she still feels suspect she can call the police station and confirm that this officer is pulling her over. Also, I advised her to film every interaction that she has with law enforcement. As a white woman in Florida I have been abused and harassed by the police several times. I understand that it is more problematic in black communities, but it also does happen to everyone.

Now that they're adults and teens I continue to remind them to be polite, talk as little as possible, and never consent to searches but never resist a command either. I completely understand the fear of the police and I truly empathize with black and brown folks; their odds of a bad law enforcement interaction are significantly higher. Police are dangerous and hold all the cards, don't ever call them unless it's a life and death situation and you need help from a stranger with a gun.
