Bless you both! We bought a house in a small town in Southern France in 2005, because 1/2 of my partners family lived in Europe, We are American and this was not a place Americans would usually go to. We only met 3 in 13 years.....but there were only 4 British families. So including us 50/50 split. In the middle of the Southern France, there are no beaches. Back then the rivers were still under a 10 year EU extension..not swimable in most places, because of raw sewage. Anyway we weren't building a business, just renovating a house, for big family vacations, that was built in 1710. What an adventure for 13 summers!!.....and we saw so much in France change all around us. British families...they work their GD butts off! They integrate, learn french and participate in the culture...not like the stereotype at all!! AND.....the first 12 summers we were there.....a few doors away, there was a mysterious abandoned house, surrounded by a dense bamboo forest.. Suddenly one day in the 13th summer a man came out of the door! This French family, who had lived in this house for 5 generations, had been living in England and running a pub for 13 years! They had never been back, to France, one time in 13 years! They planted a little bamboo on their river front property right before they left. NEVER PLANT BAMBOO...if you won't be there to beat it down to size once a year. NEVER!!! We were not allowed to say the word "bamboo" in their house! Anyway...I haven't been back in 5 years because I have to care for my elderly parents. I miss it so much! The French and The World diaspora in France are amazing people. The way they run their country is a light unto the world. I hope The French manage to keep what they have fought SO HARD for. Just an example: ER visit costs 80 euros for a foreigner. For someone with no insurance to go to the ER in America? $700-$900-$1200??? Unlike American cities a waiter in France is a life long profession. Restaurant staff drive late model french cars. And pre school/daycare is free. Among other social support systems. But of course this is always under threat.......so strikes are always now around the corner. I loved the 2016 video of the AirFrance workers chasing the AF execs and ripping their shirts off. They didn't hurt the execs, just took their shirts.

I have stayed there with 3 other ladies and what a fantastic place, we were made so welcome by the couple and spent a lot of time with mark & Shirley it made you feel at home. Definitely worth a visit for the experience, best of luck to you both for the future.

Good luck, it looks lovely. I just hope over time they incorporate the amazing regional cuisine into their menu. Nothing wrong with a full English, but having spent time in that region, the local food is incredible. I'm so impressed they only went two months over their original time plan. Well done guys, I wish you lots of success!
Thank you for kind wishes we actually p my did the breakfast for a few guests then decided the place and kitchen is big enough for our guests to do their own . We have now been self catering for the last 6 years works great for us and our guest 😎

I absolutely adore Shirley's accent. There is something so warm and inviting about it. I know the stress of sorting building plans and organizing renovations. It's great that Mark and Shirley was loving and supportive towards one another during such a stressful period. They are lucky to have each other. I wish them and their business all the best!

I have a 4 room b and b in Vietnam,my life has never been better, I meet people from all over the world, I love life, this series is excellent.
It will never cease to amaze me how British people have to have their heavy, cooked breakfast when they travel - even in hot countries 😅
We stopped breakfasts we also done continental but we are now self catering which is great for us & our guests😀

Nice couple. I can't understand a lot of what they are saying due to the Scottish accent. Beautiful B and B, lovely pool!. I hope they made a succes of it. I'd have loved to have a husband like hers.
I wish we saw Alex in this video, her voice is not enough. She is amazing, and the work she does with these hoteliers is phenomenal. But this place is just outstanding. This couple is adorable. I just don’t know if I like the gravel too much. When you go in and out if the pool wouldn’t it dirty up the pool.
So pleased for them, I have never seen such a deserving couple. I hope Mark's Mum is pleased.xx

What a lovely couple. I hope it all works out. They have the guts to follow their dreams.I know firsthand watching saving go down and the sense of uncertainly. I cried myself a week ago when I heard I had gotten a brilliant job after 1.5 years of unemployment due to covid. That pool is the bomb by the way, beautiful.

Good golly, Miss Molly! I really struggle to understand what Mark and Shirley (especially Shirley) is saying. I had no idea the Scotts have a dialect that difficult to understand. Not like I'm complaining- I'm just not used to it! I do love the destination hotel projects. They are nice to watch the countryside.
Guys congratulations. I've been following your posts with the thought of moving out to Granada, renovate a cave to live in, and see out the rest of my retirement there. I'll hopefully be able to pick your brains a bit about the renovation process and costs!

Ran a fishing lodge for years and it was exhausting work - I did all of the cooking, cleaning etc.

Some people are hard of thinking. They cannot compute anything that is not text speak or semi literate. Not only is it lazy, it is rude .And ultimately to their detriment. My Spanish is still not as good as I would wish, but I have gained an acquaintance with an elderly Spanish lady who 'happens' to be around when I am leaving my charity work, because she knows I will give her a lift home! I love her ,because we have weird conversations where she coaxes Spanish from me and corrects it when it is wrong. or I am missing a word. She found a book I am reading in the car today and she immediately wanted to know what it was about, where it was set, who was the artist of the painting on the cover. I defy anyone fluent in Spanish to explain that the book is a fictionalised account of people who actually lived ,in Clovelly and Bideford, and the woman was a single mother of 2, products of rape and seduction, who ended up in the workhouse and the painting was by Walter Langley who lived in Newlyn and painted the locals. What did the title mean? Help! Anyone know how the Spanish explain the turning of the tide? I was sitting there waving my hands back and forth in a limp way going 'La Mar' and making swishing noises! ''EL Mar!' It helped that we are in a fishing place ourselves. But I love that lady, best Spanish lesson for the cost of a lift! 'We can't understand!' 'People speaking very eloquent English. Well, that is Their loss .If they want to be ignorant forever there is not much We can do about it.
You can't even build a decent home for the little amount that they spent on the total of the place. This video must be 10 years or more old because you couldn't do that now for that little amount of money. At least I don't think so. It's gorgeous, I'd love to stay there. Thanks Mom-in-Law 💜

I admire your grit and determination to get the project through and it is a stunning result when finished. I wonder if the Covid lockdown has put paid to your venture ....have you been able to re open ? PS I lived in France for 12years and saw many people try and fail at doing the same sort of holiday letting business. All best wishes.

Believe it or not the cave ceilings are so high and it’s very bright master bedroom has a window entrance hall has a window Kitchen has a window and now the 2 other bedrooms now has light tunnels with windows 😀
Wow, how unusual! My father was an Architect of note on the Washington DC Registry (along Frank Lloyd Wright) While these dwelling look stylish..I personally am claustrophobic. I love all nature too much to want to dwell in a cave. But, I must admit the experience is unique.
Im so glad it ended well and it's on my bucket list to visit but seriously...you move to a country without learning the language or researching the building rules and regulations before you put money into a project?!!

By Alex's definition, what is the difference between a hotel and a bed and breakfast ?? None of these seem to be hotels to me .
We agree we are neither a Hotel or a B&B we are now a self Catering property .. It’s the producers who decide on the name of the series 😀
