Thought I'd have a go using Charlie's trowel. I've adopted plenty of his methods over the last year or so and all of them have been beneficial in some way!...Ive had a 12/11" trowel for years now..so thought I'd try out the current trowel we all see him using in his video! 😄
Lol loving this for me 7”” all day I will agree with Charlie on this one man love it. Have a good man 🧱🧱🧱🧱👍⚒🇺🇸
Inorder you use The Collison Trowel properly, you must be dressed like a member of a boy band, otherwise the magic dont happen... them shorts are not going to cut the mustard Izzy 😆👌. Collison looks better going to work, than I do going out 🤣
A smaller sized trowel , in the right hands will save your wrist and lay just as fast , once learned . I'm actually one of those guys that suggested Charlie switch. I've been laying bricks and blocks for over 50 years. I've tried all ways ...
100%. When we started there was nothing bigger than a 10" trowel. 7" was very common. What is common now is tennis elbow in young men. It's no good earning loads on price if you can't lay past the age of 50.
I worked with a bricklayer before who used a 12 inch for everything and he liked it to gauge in between blocks to make sure a block could fit in the gap. Everyone who’s been doing it all their life has little tricks they use to make their life easier. Its all what you’re comfortable with
Haha mate if you've seen my other videos..I use my 12" for checking if a block fits in all the time👌👌👌👌😉👍
Exactly.
I just got myself one but didn't like the handle so bought a red plastic one ( which didn't fit the tang is smaller on the 7 inch ) but with some epoxy resin poured into the hole it fits beautifully. Now I've got the perfect trowel for brickwork.
Sounds really decent that mate
Thought them beds were thick there izzy .I used to use a 12 inch for blockwork then an 11 for brickwork .years of bricklaying has takes its toll.so the 12 inch is in the tool bag now i currently use a 10 inch marshalltown for all uses as it helps my wrist elbow and shoulder. I do have a w rose that comes out now and then if my elbow starts mate 🤣🤣🧱🧱 .i think my advice would be use the trowel you are most happy with that suits you. Good luck mate Justin 👍
10 inch all the way good all rounder 👍
Was my first trowel 👌😂
@@IzzytheBricky Think a 12 would ruin me now maybe ill give him a run out on blockwork next time izzy 😍🤣👍💯🥃
@@IzzytheBricky Gonna be my last mate 🤣🤣 nar i love laying bricka pationate about our trade but it hurts doing it hard work never killed anyone or does it ?? 🤣
Hahaha well that use to be my moto but I try to avoid working too hard nowadays 😂😂 I find laying bricks/blocks very easy on the body compared to half the other jobs that come with doing private work, such as digging out drains and all the other stuff that comes along with it😂 get me on site with a forklift please😂🙏🙏🍻
Been a bricklayer for 35 years ,and 20 years a Forman for most of the big sub contractors in the south east and London ,and had 2 years in Germany ,and have experienced lots of bricklayers ,the best aways use small trowels ,
Bigger the trowel bigger the mess and waste
Very very true
Agree nick this guy isn’t in Charlie’s league not neat at all
You was a Forman for Norman brickwork Nick is that right ?
I use 8-9 inch for block and brick ..30 years laying without any problems.
I like an 11" MT Philly myself for blockwork. On the brick pic and dip i like a MT coke trowel the wide one. Best damn pic and dip trowel hands down!
New subscriber 👍
Brilliant work buddy! If I were you, I'd stick with the trowel you know the most! 😁 Keep up the great work mate, looking forward to the next one! 👌😁👍👷♂️🧱
Cheers fella! Have a good weekend buddy!
Just before everyone goes mad. I'm not trying to copy Charlie, however I, like many other brickies have adopted lot of his practices because they work very well! So I thought I'd have a go with the trowel hes currently using. (7" Marshalltown tilers trowel) Definitely does not feel natural compared to my other 11/12"s👌 but I'm I figure with a bit more time playing with it I'll get use to it. Also..reason for big bed joints is explained in the video😉..but basically the wall plate HAS to be bedded on at 940mm to marry up with the existing brickwork on the old barn
Mate the 7” probably wouldn’t of even been as bad if you had proper 10mm joints . Having to bed up with that little thing was long. Sure itd be nice on brick give it a go before you give it away.
@@bardy9240 yea mate very true! I probably only used it for about 2 hours..kept swapping between both of them😂 should be on some brickwork next week, I'll give it a go before sending it on its journey to all the other brickies😂👌
@@IzzytheBricky I’d buy it off you if i was on dry clay bricks, but these concrete bricks are so heavy, long spread pic n dip is the only way to go, I wouldn’t like a trowel full and a coni brick in my hands at the same time haha
Haha how heavy are they mate? About 500g 750g? Well looks like I'll be sending it Steve and Alex and then Mark in the next few weeks😂 If your ever on Clay's, give us a shout and I'll send it your way👌👌 Enjoy your weekend fella!🍻
The trade is fvcked if collinson is setting the trends 😂
you are measuring from a chip board floor and guessing on a 241mm joist. so 263mm above gf ceiling?
Charlie reinvents the wheel
Charlie does have his tables at like his waist though so he isn’t bending over. You have yours set to your trowel, an like you, he is used to using his at his table height.
Yea mate good point 😁 Have a good weekend buddy!
@@IzzytheBricky You to man! Enjoy the rest of your week!
This is like the great carpenter debate over hammer weight and styles. I like a long shank long nose 18oz hammer, even for framing and roofing. Heavy waffle faced hammers blow your arms to bits after a day of swinging.
Everyone is different, you should do what you feel comfortable with, don't follow the pack
For sure fella, definitely sticking with mine for now🍻😉
@@IzzytheBricky can't see the point of having a small trowel for blockwork anyway
He uses the little trowel on bricks mostly 🧱 and he’s not bumping 10 mill every corse . And Charlie’s not a spring chicken he’s not got the joints of a bloke in his early 20s .
I'd love to have a go at conserving the old part. I use a 4 inch gauging trowel.
I might be doing a bit on the old part in the next few weeks..if I am I'll make sure to make a video! That's a nice size buddy! Just been watching your videos, great stuff mate, never used lime before and I've got a big reporting job coming up where Im using it! So your videos are very helpful mate!
@@IzzytheBricky thankyou and good luck. If you need any advice you know where I am 👍
Knock the gable down. It’s Gerry built rubbish.
@@willbee6785 ayup mate, the old stone work is coming down this week 👌🙂
The lad who's job it is has said it's beyond fixing..as it's already leaning 12 degrees with cracks all the way though..easily put your fist in..accedent waiting to happen 😨😨😨
You have to use what’s better for you everyone’s different I guess but the 12” trowel looks like it’s more useful for checking stuff. Your deffo more methodical than many other bricklayers - I like the way you do your block work to suit the needs of the insulation so it doesn’t bulge out whereas I saw Charlie Collison doing some and it was all moving over the place didn’t look too good on a KZhead video!
Excelente y muy bonito trabajo🧱🧱👍👍👍saludos desde chile🙏🙏💯💯
Looks like a nice job that mate. That gable. Who knows what you will have to do with that 👍. I would say only use a trowel that size for bricks. Have have two trowels one is small and the other is verry small. I should measure it .lol. They that worn down I haven't got a clue how big they are👍👍👍
Cheers mate! Spoke about the gable..come up with a plan involving lots of windposts concreted into cube footings behind it at least 1m deep. I suggested to then use bolts and rebar though the gable to fix into the posts and the big X ties you see on old buildings to stop them bellying out👌👌 then just more steels and block flat pillars to bolt all existing brickwork to from the outside 😂😂🤞🤞 Definitely giving it a go on bricks next week to see how I get on..its a lovely trowel to use..but just so foreign 😂 I'd love to see them trowels mate, you'll have to send us a picture fella👌👌
@@IzzytheBricky sounds like a good plan mate👍👍👍. I minght put them in the vid next week. I would love a go of that trowel. But I pritty much done on the brick for now. I on the roof next week lol. then I got a big oak carport to do 👍👍👍
Sounds brilliant mate look forward to see that job coming along! Yes mate your welcome to it mate! I think its gonna be travelling about England a bit😂😂 ima try it a bit more on some brickwork next week. But after that..I'll make a list of brickies to send it to..and then they can send it on.. and so on so on👌👌 🍻🍻🍻
@@IzzytheBricky yere lol. Do you watch Jay the Belgium Bricky. They lay with small trowels all the time and work from big buckets not boards. He a grate Watch. I love how they do it. 👍👍👍
@@markhep I dont mate! I'll go check him out now! I remember seeing lads In Europe using similar trowels but it was years ago when I first started out😂🍻
Keep us posted on how you stop that old gable falling down , looks paggered 🤣 another great vid mate 👍🏼
😂😂😂I've got a master plan for it mate🤞🤞👌 Cheers mate! Enjoy your weekend fella
I have always used anmarshalltown 12 inch and don’t plan to change It feels so natural to me. Don’t think I could use anything else
Agreed mate..that is what I learnt with too👌👌🍻
ME TO. AND. A LONDON PATTEN TO ,,
Agreed. Just got a new marshaltown 1912, looked massive compared to my 1912 going on 19 9-1/2. Started using it and after laying 2 bricks thought why on earth did I let my trowel get this small!
I preferred the 11" tho 10 or 12 similar not arguing the point, same with London vs Canadian. One thing I always liked tho was the phenolic handle, I'd been told wood or rubber was best but once had no choice but to buy phenolic & much preferred it, never used anything but since. It's warmer on your hand, better for tapping down & easier to clean in my experience.
I use same 7inch trowel can lay jist as many bricks or blocks amd no problems with my elbows and grip
I would never use a 12" only get one wrist and elbow, most good brickys i worked with use 10" and they like whippet's
Well technically you get 2 wrists n elbows bro
@@BUILDA__L you’re not going to lay bricks with your weak hand lad
Would it of been easier to make the wall plate thicker?
Yea definitely. Was told by gaffer on the job to bed up however😂
Ha ha was gonna say something about the beds until you showed the reason 😂
Haha I'm having to tell everyone about them while I reply to all the comments! Joints had to be that big to the Wallplate sat at the right hight to marry up with the existing gable and old barn walls😂👌👌 Hope your well mate, have a good weekend mate!
@@IzzytheBricky the joys of building you too mate have good an 👍
When you get older your arm will appreciate using a smaller trowel its all in your technique been doing this trade for over 30 years bigger isn't always better lol but too each his own fella tradesman
To All these people going on about bad wrists nd elbows. Just becauce your using a 10+ inch trowel doesnt mean you have to load it with an ridiculously heavy amount.... there are an army of brickys who use big trowels but dont get the problems usually assoicsted with them
Exactly.
Trying to do long bed with the small trowel is pointless, you'll spend so much time picking up muck you'll instantly hate it. Try picking up enough to lay one block then lay that block, the big beds aren't helping at all. You could always try dropping sizes in stages, so go down to a 9 inch trowel get the hang of that then try the 7 inch again 👍🏻
Pick the muck up as you have hold of the block , all in one go, it’s actually very easy once you get into use to it 👍
Good video Izzy . But You might have been better off doing the comparison on a wall that you didn’t have to bed up so much . You’d probably need to stick to bedding for one block at a time with the tilers trowel . The tilers trowel is a handy one to have in the bag.
Yea mate very true, probably not the best job to try it put..but was too eager to try it😂😂 hope your well buddy 👍👍🍻
I’m actually downgrading to a 10inch, I’ve used a 12 for years and at 42 my wrist and hand are starting to suffer, got to look after yourself.
Thought Charlie uses a smaller trowel when using silo mortar.
Tricky has decent hands too.
Charlie is a very good bricklayer what he can do with a trowel is no one could pick up any trowel and use it like he can
Get a room mate👍
I think he’s made it simply for pick n dipping
This the same Charlie who can't even clean his tools properly? 😂
over 1000 subscribers i see ;)
Haha yea bud! Hit it last week! Hope your both well! Enjoy your weekend lads, dont work too hard😁🍻🍻
Issy get on a 12" london pattern less of a wide heel and give them block a rub down( along the length not side to side?) rather than tapping ....
I think Charlie just use's the small trowel for pick & dip an it is just enough for 1 brick
I’m the same
Sorry mate didn't realise you had to bump up that much. Good work
Haha cheers mate! Ye the wallplate needed to be set at 940😄 Enjoy the rest of your weekend buddy, cheers for the comments 👍
What blocks are you using there please
Think they were 3 Newtons mate
What trowel is that mate ?
Ayup buddy, Marshalltown tiling trowel 7 inch
Surprised building control didn’t ask you to take down that wall with beds that thick!
Loving the videos , when the next upload??🧱
Cheers mate! Hopefully some point this week.👍🍻
I could use that trowel mate.
fact is trowel size don't make a lot of difference to speed, a bigger trowel however is responsible for tennis or golfers elbow, I myself use a 12 inch Marshall town for the simple reason it lasts longer and is the same price but am full of cortisone injections for elbow/wrist/shoulder pain
That's good logic, save a couple of quid but destroy the elbow/wrist/shoulder and get pumped full of steroid injection but hey get a but more value out of that trowel. You might save 50 over a decade. Shrewd
should have kept joints gauge and bedded pan up
That 7 in isnt for outside brick work it works magic in the refineries laying refractory brick
Never seen someone use a trowel in there right hand with a left hand action 12” to big and it’s not faster because it’s bigger.
Hola una pregunta por Que me mandas la medida de la cuchara de 12 pulgada el ancho y largo gracias
Pick and dip is the way to go..you can plod away and you're x amount of bricks ahead of the other guy as he ain't even laying yet.
Well Charlie can lay bricks like no fuckers business
Can you do a video on how to build a fire pit?
Ayup, I'm sure some lads on KZhead have already done that mate! Have a little look:)
wow a job for a hobby
I never understand why people spread the mortar. Are you trying to massage it or something?
Mate stick to what you know, well saying that I just ordered a new W.rose I heard it’s good for elbow pain but we will see haha
Haha yes Andy! I've heard that there good for that too mate! Let us know how you get on with it! I tried this one for my back pain, but felt more pain with all the bending I had to do using it.
We was a 10 n 4 last year we all switched to w rose, guess what we all switched back now to Marshall town
@@goingfarwebb26 fk me a 10n4 and..bet you lads turned out some work! Were you on supers? Or more industrial work?
@@goingfarwebb26 they that bad?
In later videos he agrees with Charlie 😂👍🏼
😂😂😂 quite naive back here
Slice furrowing faster more control.
I would get the sack for using that trowel
11 1/2 ....12 ...on block, brick.....plant something with the spade....
spread down a few shovels of sand along the wall where your walking it will stop the snots sticking ....
Maybe good for pic & dip on brickwork Izzy?
Probably so mate! I'll give it a go next week👌👌
Nothing wrong using a 12 inch trowel what ever suits elbows will get fucked with small or big trowel. Boards down long benefit from bigger trowel but really need to get them boards up to waist level 800mm a think ma stands are something like that and that’s where you will benefit with a 9-10inch trowel. 7inch only good on dry bricks with frogs picking and dipping.
Hi Mate u obviously didnt try the trowel I recommended from B an Q, by Magneson. Dead cheap but great handle balance. Yes I have marshalltowns. But for value quality. It's good in my opinion. Much better than that pointing trowel haha. So did u not like it, or not got one ?
I've got it mate!😊👌 and used it a few times now, but not had chance to put it in a video, the last few weeks I haven't been on the trowel much..been on other jobs and that!😊 you know how it is buddy:) hope your well mate, hows everything your end 😊🍻
@@IzzytheBricky All good buddy. I'm like a Foreman type now, and have taught lads, but sad some of them not got the staying power. Gange spliff heads.. I'm planning a front wall, in Flemish bond 3 colour bricks. One end circular .other radius to the pillar.with dog tooth. Its only small wall so got to be careful not to put too much into it

@@IzzytheBricky Yes lads today, but still some. I was a late learner at 20 So I really wanted it bad. Love bricklaying. It's an art. I always say it's more than brawn. In the quest for small trowel big trowel consider Tennis elbow ! If you get it trying to be a “ mortar baron” beware you won’t be working much in the future, Just sayin!
Did Charlie tell you that by any chance
If those bricks on the pallets r for this job,,, get them covered up
10inch all the way.!
Yea buddy, 10" is a lovely trowel 👌😄 hope your well and not getting to wet in this crap weather buddy
Trowels are like all hand tools and golf clubs, its in the feel, one size dont fit all,
Instead making you bump they should’ve given you a bigger plate 😂
Good should mate, I've seen 4x1 bedded on with 80mm wallplate bolted on top a couple of times..all the same really..as long as it dont move too far..its all good😂👌🍻
Wet the spot boards down
using a big trowel to compensate 😂😂😂 imagine if Charlie used a big trowel he lay lot more in a day
Thermalite block good build them with a tea spoon there that light 10 Inc big enough let's not try and change the wheel cavity wall small trowel can clean snots
Over 20 years small trowels good for jobbing bricklayer and people with small wrists lol
I did find it good to getting into tight spots in the cavity and that..which was quite nice...also my big trowel catches the wind like a kite..so it was nice to having that blow about in my hand all day😂 spot on mate👌🍻🍻
Joints on block are angled back to much when applied. Try to keep joint near same plane as face of block.
Don't leave gaps in your spread. Don't leave mortar hanging. Two much mortar for flat bottom units if not bedding up.
Small trowel is Chinese JUNK I think.
Don't leave ANY mortar projecting on face or top after you lay and cut a unit.
Keep that trowel for gardening.
Charlie's C trowels have many bad habits.
If you like a 12" trowel great, if you like a small trowel great. Every one is different. All these people saying a 12 inch trowel will do this to your wrist or what ever, everyone is built different. Some people's body can handle it, some can't. Just like some athletes get injured and some don't, some people catch cold some don't, and some people get tennis elbow using a large trowel and some people don't.
I always swap better 9" and 13" just depends on how I feel. Hope your good mate
@@IzzytheBricky same as. I use my 12 till eye level, then a smaller worn one for the next four course. Gauge or tile setters when working out of a bucket. And my worn one for intricate stuff. Keep up the good work.

12 inch hands gotta hurt
muck looks ropey also
Another expert. 12 taps and 6 scrapes a block
Any one caught tapping was shouted at in the college I went too. Lay the the bed right in the first place, but then again if you are putting it on with a shovel.......
It is not the tool it's the man using it that counts
Big beds
Had to bed up to 940th
It’s for pick and dipping on brick work not for block work but fear play for trying it out on the block work fuc* thay lol
Haha agreed fella! Saw Charlie using it on concrete blockwork few days ago ago so thought it would be cool. Obviously I'm not use to it at all though 😂 Enjoy your weekend mate!🍻🍻🍻
Haha Yhe I don’t know how he can use it on block work but fear play brick work yhe. And you mate 🥃🥃🥃🍸
Keep your trowel hand closest to the line when spreading ffs ,and dont let joiners near your work, that's the problem now any tool thinks he an just do a tradesman job, would NEVER been allowed in the past

Our mate Charlie 🤦🏼
size is not everything, as we are always being told, its the way you use it, ? well thats what the wife said,
Hello All, I have been watching Charlie’s video’s for sometime now, and his video’s are not just about bricklaying they are educational for new bricklayers, they are educational for ergonomics regarding skeletal posturing, and Charlie is always discussing new tools etc, and is always sent products by companies for review. On the matter of the trowel, charlie uses the smaller trowel for safeguarding his limbs ie less pressure/strain on his wrist and elbow, and muscles too. Regarding the muck table, Charlie always uses it at a height so he does not have to constantly bend. Finally, Charlie is always professional and never makes detrimental comments towards other builders like this gentleman, and suggest that before you make negative comments towards Charlie you watch his video’s, because unlike you he is refined and while you are moaning about Charlies workmanship you could learn many lessons from him on building techniques, health & wellbeing, as well as health & safety regarding tool usage.
Hiya mate! Myself, like many others have been watching Charlie's videos for ages now, and have adopted many of his methods and techniques. Most not seen is this video. Never "moaned about Charlie's workmanship" either...I've always liked what he does and is doing for the bricklaying community. I've see alot of hardheaded Bricklayers change they way they work because of the methods he uses. This video is just showing how I got on with the trowel he uses and to have a bit of a laugh, I'm not a very serious bloke and never will be😂😂 Do appreciate the comment mate, hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend John 🍻
