  • If you do fleet maintenance, you can really see the direct results of good preventive maintenance. Transmissions lasting hundreds of thousands of miles. There's a lot of money involved, so you do what works. Normal people don't understand any of this. That's why the demand for independent mechanics is so high right now. Like, take care of what you have and barring some defect, it will last a very long time.

  • I have a 2006 Honda Civic (1.8 L) that 5 years ago developed hesitation into 3rd gear, intermittently. It was winter (Canaderp) so I figured that was a factor and she had over 190k miles which sure wasn't helping. I shifted "manually" if it got troublesome. Summer rolled around and it just disappeared. No codes, nothing. Almost all highway mileage. I consider myself lucky it wasn't something that escalated. That old girl now sits at the back of the driveway, with my respect and appreciation... and a healthy dose of mid-00's Honda recall-level paint rot.

  • When a transmission starts slipping when cold it's usually low in oil. -All Haynes manuels. Transmission oil cooler lines sometimes rot and loose ATF. Shuddering is usually caused by sludge in the valve body. I learned that by taking an Ford AODA to find out why my 4RW70 was shuddering. (Same transmission with different gear ratios in first and second)I had another 4RW70. Shifting in and out of this gear at a steady speed about 10 times will usually fix this problem temporarily. Useful for testing. Change fluid, filter and Retorque valve body bolts while the pan is down. No reverse is usually loose valve body bolts caused by engine vibration. Retorque valve body bolts, change filter and fluid. I learned that from the valve body seal in the AODE. I kept it because I thought it was the 1 part that would fail besides the bands and clutches. The first 4 bolts in the torque sequence in my 4RW70 were had 0 torque. Then an ATF line started leaking.

  • I wouldn't junk the truck for the transmission. I would just probably shop around for a low mileage used transmission if I was going to put out as little money as possible. A friend of mine had a first generation Chevy Citation with the Iron Duke 4 cylinder and it had the hardest shifts I've ever felt. I mean this thing shifted like a sledgehammer. It was so hard the entire car would shake. Funny thing is he drove it that way for years and it just kept going.

  • You can also remove the pan and save the fluid then install a TransGo shift correction kit and refill with the old fluid minus 1 QT of old replacing it with 1 QT of new fluid. That could ease the new fluid additives into the transmission slowly however, upgrade the shifting issues that are inherently part of almost all automatics from the factory. That doesn't take a lot of money to do and if anything the valve body gets corrected which is usually the problem in many transmissions.

  • If thick oil fixes it valve body bolts loose. Retorque valve body bolts and replaced filter and fluid. In that order. Changing only the fluid will make it worse. Changing the filter only could fix it by increasing the pump pressure and volume. 5:55 Retorquing valve body bolts reduces internal leaking from 1 passage to another reducing the pressure required for bands and clutches to be applied and prevents pressure to bands and clutches that shouldn't be applied.

  • Scotty should do a video on signs/symptoms of a CVT transmission that’s going out! Particularly that of a 2010 Prius Cuz I do know the way they’re built you can floor them or not and the sound is like it’s in 1 gear whining out and never upshifting! Which is what a reg auto trans does say if it lost 5th and your going 65 in 4th! So will a CVT just suddenly stop? Or are they’re signs before they go out? Now I do know Nissans just pop and stop no warning but are Toyotas like that?

    @jessewynne8193@jessewynne819313 күн бұрын
    • As long as you change the fluid and filter every 35k-40kmiles. That Prius shouldn’t have any issues with the tranny. Now, if it has 100k+ miles and hasn’t been ever changed…I’d probably just do the filter. Ask me how I know 😅

      @WilliamLopez559@WilliamLopez55912 күн бұрын
    • The way CVT's are designed, your engine isn't going to increase in rpms as the car accelerates, and then shift and do it over again. It will just stay at something like 3k rpms until it gets up to speed, or you let off. It sounds abnormal compared to the way a standard auto trans works, but the benefit is the correct gear ratio the entire time until you let off the gas. If your CVT starts to go out, you will usually experience symptoms before a complete failure, just like you would with a normal trans. Usually abnormal noises or shuddering. I have a 2011 Altima with a CVT and have had a whine for about a year now. It doesn't do it all the time, but if I drive it a lot it will eventually become more noticeable. More than likely it is either the trans oil pump bearings, or the trans belt. Either of which require a complete trans overhaul or replacement. I haven't yet begun to experience any slipping or performance issues. The fluid is still good and the car performs perfectly and doesn't even have any heat related issues in the CA summer. I just don't drive it on long trips, which is fine because I only got it so I could get better fuel economy for running errands around town. The upside is that CVT's are generally cheaper to replace than standard auto transmissions. They are lighter and have less moving parts. A sudden CVT failure will most likely result in a sudden loss of acceleration, it probably suddenly won't stop you, and you would just coast to a stop without any power to the trans, though the engine will keep running.

    • Agree! Always better to rebuild a vehicle that you have had from new or know the history of rater than buy new or another used on that has more complications. Have rebuilt the body on our 1984b S10 P/U 3 times & engine once at 233,000 miles. Truck fits my small 4`10" size perfectly & has bench seat which provides good visibility for me.

    • Toyota's are worth it, GM products? nay nay unless you are talking about a pre-emissions regulated Duramax Diesel. If it was a Tacoma you rebuilt chances are it's still worth $10-15K no matter what the mileage is. I live in Canada 20 year old Toyota Tacoma's and 4 runners if in good shape easily command $15-20k CDN. There is a dealership in Cochrane Alberta with an 88 4 runner in beautiful condition they are asking over 50 grand and it's got a quarter million kilometers on it. Toyotas are special.

    • That's why I drive manuals. There only 2 major components on a car, engine and transmission... get a manual amd you eliminate one possible problem right away. If you can drive manual well, you'll never need a clutch either. My Focus has 400k km on original clutch. Just hope the slave doesn't start leaking, so far so good though.

  • Big issue on GMC that the shops will try to take you for a new transmission - big clanking/clicking noise when shifting f Into reverse or drive: first thing to check is the crossmember because the bolts loosen up. Next thing is the transmission mount or driver's side motor mount (after you preclude the U joints, front diff mounting bolts and CVs. Always diagnose a problem from the simplest and cheapest end of possibilities.

Tighten to 40 ft/lbs torque, then back it off exactly four turns. Bought me a few months till I could afford the repair. YT has vids on how to do this

  • my transmission on my 88 f150 was slipping. $14 speed sensor install when i realized the rod on the sensor was disconnected. so my transmission was shifting blindly. now its all good. i also had good luck on a reman 4l60e for my h2 that i got from jegs with a new torque converter. a simple swap that took like 7hrs and its been good to go. ill take a $2200 swap every 150,000 miles over car oayments. that said i think it blew due to a radiator crack that ended up overheating the transmission due to coolant leaking massivley. might have lasted longer. the new plastic radiators suck btw. new one didnt last a year. getting a welded aluminum one next before the year is over.
