It doesn't really matter what a vehicle is "worth" to fix. Truthfully, I'd rather fix an old car than replace it with a new one that's riddled with garbage electronics and isn't built well to begin with...

So true! I’d rather drop $3,500 on a trans then $28,000-$50,000 on these turbo driven crap that even Honda and Toyota quality has dropped (still best but not as good) and won’t last as many trouble free miles like the older ones

The best mechanics know diagnostics.
If you do fleet maintenance, you can really see the direct results of good preventive maintenance. Transmissions lasting hundreds of thousands of miles. There's a lot of money involved, so you do what works. Normal people don't understand any of this. That's why the demand for independent mechanics is so high right now. Like, take care of what you have and barring some defect, it will last a very long time.
I have a 2006 Honda Civic (1.8 L) that 5 years ago developed hesitation into 3rd gear, intermittently. It was winter (Canaderp) so I figured that was a factor and she had over 190k miles which sure wasn't helping. I shifted "manually" if it got troublesome. Summer rolled around and it just disappeared. No codes, nothing. Almost all highway mileage. I consider myself lucky it wasn't something that escalated. That old girl now sits at the back of the driveway, with my respect and appreciation... and a healthy dose of mid-00's Honda recall-level paint rot.
A friend of mine has one of those as well. It's criminal that Honda wouldn't step up and do something about that defective paint. They kept it very quiet

Good Preventive Maintenance can save you thousands. I'm sure there's a lot of people driving around with old Transmission Fluid. I confident *most* transmission failures are the result of this.
Mine leaks so much it gets a good full cycle every now and again. 🤭
When a transmission starts slipping when cold it's usually low in oil. -All Haynes manuels. Transmission oil cooler lines sometimes rot and loose ATF. Shuddering is usually caused by sludge in the valve body. I learned that by taking an Ford AODA to find out why my 4RW70 was shuddering. (Same transmission with different gear ratios in first and second)I had another 4RW70. Shifting in and out of this gear at a steady speed about 10 times will usually fix this problem temporarily. Useful for testing. Change fluid, filter and Retorque valve body bolts while the pan is down. No reverse is usually loose valve body bolts caused by engine vibration. Retorque valve body bolts, change filter and fluid. I learned that from the valve body seal in the AODE. I kept it because I thought it was the 1 part that would fail besides the bands and clutches. The first 4 bolts in the torque sequence in my 4RW70 were had 0 torque. Then an ATF line started leaking.

I wouldn't junk the truck for the transmission. I would just probably shop around for a low mileage used transmission if I was going to put out as little money as possible. A friend of mine had a first generation Chevy Citation with the Iron Duke 4 cylinder and it had the hardest shifts I've ever felt. I mean this thing shifted like a sledgehammer. It was so hard the entire car would shake. Funny thing is he drove it that way for years and it just kept going.

From my experience, here's a sure way to know your transmission is about to go out: You own a Chrysler PT Cruiser with 80,000 miles on it.
You got the tranny to 80K? That's amazing! The MANUAL transmission on my dad's PT went out at 60k.

Yep same with me. Buy a car that is known to have a good engine and get a manual. You virtually eliminate having a major problem. I have a 2013 focus, the engines are bulletproof but the auto trans were garbage, if you get a manual, they go forever. Mine just rolled over 400,000km. Still running perfect.

I've had to replace my transmission on my 2013 Dodge Caravan in 2021. It had 115000 miles on it. And besides that, it was nickel and diming me for a while, but it is finally running quite well now. It's up to 150000 miles now. I'm hoping it will go over 200000 miles.

You can also remove the pan and save the fluid then install a TransGo shift correction kit and refill with the old fluid minus 1 QT of old replacing it with 1 QT of new fluid. That could ease the new fluid additives into the transmission slowly however, upgrade the shifting issues that are inherently part of almost all automatics from the factory. That doesn't take a lot of money to do and if anything the valve body gets corrected which is usually the problem in many transmissions.
i had a 2002 impala i liked it. had some issues with exhaust holes but hey thats just how it is up here in the rust belt
Scotty uses the best method to diagnose, duplicate the concern first, otherwise it's a time consuming crapshoot.
My transmission just crapped out. The shop is so behind I may never get it back. 3500 bucks. 😢😢😢

If thick oil fixes it valve body bolts loose. Retorque valve body bolts and replaced filter and fluid. In that order. Changing only the fluid will make it worse. Changing the filter only could fix it by increasing the pump pressure and volume. 5:55 Retorquing valve body bolts reduces internal leaking from 1 passage to another reducing the pressure required for bands and clutches to be applied and prevents pressure to bands and clutches that shouldn't be applied.
The transmission in my 12' ram cost me $970 after a shift solenoid went out. It was stuck in fourth gear limp mode.

Hey Scot I love your videos I have a question and hopping you can help me out. I have a 94 Honda civic and it smokes white but also spits out some black stuff from the tail pipe and smells like gas really bad. What could be wrong?
I had similar noise to Ford Truck in a VW Amarok. With same noise detector, the Transfer sounded bad, but it was the bearing (4 bearings don't remember the name in English), in the rear shaft.

I had an '88 Dodge truck that I bought from a friend for $50. It was originally owned by the highway department. Trans mission slipped when shifting out of park. God knows how many miles it had on. it. I drove it for3-4 years, when it started slipping in all gears, then I sold it One of the vehicles that I wished I had bought when it was new!

Have a 2007 rav4 V6 AWD. It has a bad transfer case so forced me to remove the drive shaft and all the power to the front wheels. Also have a bad roller bearing iv been told, get a loud groan when it hits about 20mph. Wondering if Lucas oil would help or can I even put it in a Japanese transmission?. Thanks

Have a 2006 Mercedes S 500. Sat up a 2 weeks , then I washed it. Started fine, won't leave 1st gear. Read bad Solenoid B . Mechanic said new transmission . Now getting P0600 code (electrical short). Going to check all fuses. Any thoughts ? 122,000 miles. My only car. Retiree . Can't afford another.
On the Impala, he suggested the Lucas Transmission Fix stop slip fluid, AND manual shifting. Should the owner do both or manual shift first, or Lucas Fix first?

I had a ford Taurus that made this kind of noise but got louder when turning wheel. I replaced the steering pump and that whine went away! I almost sold it thinking the tranny was going out. Even tho it never slipped it was just whining

Hey Scotty i have a Ford Focus Se 07 for basically cheap and it seems to be overheating maybe because the electrical fan isnt cooling down also its 255k miles what are some good repairs you think wrong even tho u havent seen it sounds loud starting cant hold a start i think battery was the problem but when i step kinmda harder on gas it starts buts revs loudly and yea itd be hard to say tho i bet

That's easy. Any Toyota or Honda truck. That's what he would say.
Good luck finding a dealer with actual mechanics now. They just hire under paid part changers now. If a computer doesn't throw a code they cant do anything because they don't know how to diagnose issues. I took my Jeep in for a banging sound and they couldn't figure it out. Turns out it was just a loose bolt on the sway bar. They never even bothered to get under the vehicle.
N.P. transfer case have chains that get slack and will make a noise.

My friend has a 2010 nissan rogue she had not even a yr. She bought it from auto solutions in mt holly. The owner of the shop screwed her on it. The cvt went out. 7 grand to replace she bought rogue for over 5 grand she already put 10 grand in it.

I have a friend who has a crew cab, Ford F-150 that's about five years old. Anytime I've ridden with him in this vehicle when he backs it up, he shifts the automatic transmission in drive while the truck is still in reverse (but barely moving). I've often wondered if this is a bad way to handle a Ford automatic transmission. Nobody seems to know.

Scotty should do a video on signs/symptoms of a CVT transmission that’s going out! Particularly that of a 2010 Prius Cuz I do know the way they’re built you can floor them or not and the sound is like it’s in 1 gear whining out and never upshifting! Which is what a reg auto trans does say if it lost 5th and your going 65 in 4th! So will a CVT just suddenly stop? Or are they’re signs before they go out? Now I do know Nissans just pop and stop no warning but are Toyotas like that?
As long as you change the fluid and filter every 35k-40kmiles. That Prius shouldn’t have any issues with the tranny. Now, if it has 100k+ miles and hasn’t been ever changed…I’d probably just do the filter. Ask me how I know 😅
The way CVT's are designed, your engine isn't going to increase in rpms as the car accelerates, and then shift and do it over again. It will just stay at something like 3k rpms until it gets up to speed, or you let off. It sounds abnormal compared to the way a standard auto trans works, but the benefit is the correct gear ratio the entire time until you let off the gas. If your CVT starts to go out, you will usually experience symptoms before a complete failure, just like you would with a normal trans. Usually abnormal noises or shuddering. I have a 2011 Altima with a CVT and have had a whine for about a year now. It doesn't do it all the time, but if I drive it a lot it will eventually become more noticeable. More than likely it is either the trans oil pump bearings, or the trans belt. Either of which require a complete trans overhaul or replacement. I haven't yet begun to experience any slipping or performance issues. The fluid is still good and the car performs perfectly and doesn't even have any heat related issues in the CA summer. I just don't drive it on long trips, which is fine because I only got it so I could get better fuel economy for running errands around town. The upside is that CVT's are generally cheaper to replace than standard auto transmissions. They are lighter and have less moving parts. A sudden CVT failure will most likely result in a sudden loss of acceleration, it probably suddenly won't stop you, and you would just coast to a stop without any power to the trans, though the engine will keep running.
The best replacement for EVs is a regular car with manual transmission. Will cause less pollution and cost less to maintain. And will be way more reliable than any automatic.

I spent eight thousand dollars to overhaul my automatic transmission on my 24 year old Toyota and I don’t feel bad for doing that. Still cheaper than buying a new Toyota for forty thousand dollars.
Agree! Always better to rebuild a vehicle that you have had from new or know the history of rater than buy new or another used on that has more complications. Have rebuilt the body on our 1984b S10 P/U 3 times & engine once at 233,000 miles. Truck fits my small 4`10" size perfectly & has bench seat which provides good visibility for me.

Toyota's are worth it, GM products? nay nay unless you are talking about a pre-emissions regulated Duramax Diesel. If it was a Tacoma you rebuilt chances are it's still worth $10-15K no matter what the mileage is. I live in Canada 20 year old Toyota Tacoma's and 4 runners if in good shape easily command $15-20k CDN. There is a dealership in Cochrane Alberta with an 88 4 runner in beautiful condition they are asking over 50 grand and it's got a quarter million kilometers on it. Toyotas are special.

So i have no electrical experience on vehicles....i have a 2000 GS300 135k that has sat for 4 years...only thing wrong is a parasitic draw that turns new batteries bad in 16hrs....and prolly needs new ball joints....what should i do for the draw?

That's why I drive manuals. There only 2 major components on a car, engine and transmission... get a manual amd you eliminate one possible problem right away. If you can drive manual well, you'll never need a clutch either. My Focus has 400k km on original clutch. Just hope the slave doesn't start leaking, so far so good though.

Big issue on GMC that the shops will try to take you for a new transmission - big clanking/clicking noise when shifting f Into reverse or drive: first thing to check is the crossmember because the bolts loosen up. Next thing is the transmission mount or driver's side motor mount (after you preclude the U joints, front diff mounting bolts and CVs. Always diagnose a problem from the simplest and cheapest end of possibilities.

Why don't manufacturers just go back to the way cars used to be made. v8's, good trannies, lengthy and roomy seats, steel bodies, all the good, high quality stuff. No electronics, no serpentines, generators, alternators, carbs, good drives, 🇺🇸.

Dealerships don’t have mechanics, they simply have parts replacers, they are worthless except for warranty repairs.
Just take it down hill and let off around 50. See how it shifts down. You can always tell by how it shifts without acceleration

I have an 03 Silverado half ton that has 175, 000 of hard driving, skid steer and tractor dragging up and down the mountain miles and you know what? The 4L60E is still as quiet as a mouse. Oh did I tell you I had to drag a V10 4wd Ford out of a brand new septic system with my Chevy? Go ahead Scotty. Keep braggin on them Fords. They need all the help they can get!
Never forget to maintain your transmission change the fluid every 40k or sooner if you do a lot of hauling
Its cheaper to fix a older car than to buy a new one nowadays. Unless you can find a used one that is still good and is about the same price or cheaper as fixing a car.
Thumbnail is a Subaru automatic shifter. I am constantly fixing our Outback. This is probably an omen....
The mechanics of today don’t compare to the mechanics of yesterday, when they actually had to do serious problem-solving to fix a car. Today, most mechanics have no idea what a gear box is.

Sometimes the low bands can be adjusted. My GM trans has a low band adjuster so maybe yours does too. It will be right in front of you when you pull the pan. Tighten to 40 ft/lbs torque, then back it off exactly four turns. Bought me a few months till I could afford the repair. YT has vids on how to do this

my transmission on my 88 f150 was slipping. $14 speed sensor install when i realized the rod on the sensor was disconnected. so my transmission was shifting blindly. now its all good. i also had good luck on a reman 4l60e for my h2 that i got from jegs with a new torque converter. a simple swap that took like 7hrs and its been good to go. ill take a $2200 swap every 150,000 miles over car oayments. that said i think it blew due to a radiator crack that ended up overheating the transmission due to coolant leaking massivley. might have lasted longer. the new plastic radiators suck btw. new one didnt last a year. getting a welded aluminum one next before the year is over.

There are specialty Transmission Parts Stores in certain Places ! Just outside the city limits where I Live I've bought Trans- Kits and went to the Public Library and used Chilton's Auto Trans Manuals Along with Parts Estimator Guides [ which told you the time in Hours it Estimated to do a Job ( Along w/ Exploded Views of Transmissions { which helped A Lot } ) ]. And Did my Transmission [ a Chrysler 909 Lock-up Transmission ]. I wish that I could have gotten the parts & means to use Kevlar Clutches. I would have preferred to have used Kevlar Brake Parts too !
I wonder if some lubricant additive in the ATF transmission oil might help?
