Pim isn’t interested in going home at a reasonable time on Christmas Eve because his family is toxic and hostile. Charlie is usually unenthused with his work, but in this case it particularly irks Pim because he unconsciously views it as an attack on the only social environment he finds fulfilling. Of course Charlie didn’t intend to make Pim feel this way, he just (reasonably) wants to be home with his family, or at least his girlfriend, on Christmas Eve. Pim tries to bring up his emotions, but he can’t express the way he actually feels because he has misidentified the source of his frustration as Charlie’s character rather than his personal relationships (perhaps a defense mechanism: Pim avoids thinking about the distressing parts of his personal life because it is painful to think about, and therefore can’t recognise and cope with how those parts of his life effect his mental state). So instead of talking about his emotions in a productive way, he attacks Charlie’s character. Charlie sees this as unprovoked and, already feeling stressed and frustrated from his current situation, responds with a mounting emotional outburst. Then he dies and doesn’t come back
