    • nea (νεα) means "young" or "news" (i.e. εχεις νεα; 'do you have news?' or; ειναι νεος σκιλος 'it's a young dog") Greeks would say : εχω καινουρια γυαλγια /καινουριος σκιλος. Also the part about how Giannis loves Maria is wrong, I don't know if it can work with different words, but the last two examples make no sense at all, and I believe all three examples are actually wrong. (@9:00) you can not say "O Giannis ti Maria agapaei" (Ο Γιαννης τη Μαρια αγαπαει.) I can think of weird cases for the first one in the example : τη Μαρια αγαπαει Ο Γιαννης. This could work as an answer to the question : "who does Giannis love?" and "τη Μαρια" would be at the start just to put emphasis. the other two I can not think of a possible way to make them work tbh.

    • To answer your question, it is possible for a greek today to understand a lot of ancient Greek, only if he knows very (very very) well modern Greek to find the connections and locate the differences among the two eras. Unfortunatly this is not the rule nowadays, because most of the Greeks only learn and speak greek as native language and only few of them are studying (new) greek and mostly for professional reasons, for example, students, teachers, lawyers, priests (In Greece the Bible is written in anciend Greek) There is also some greek dialects they are relatively closer to anciend greek but even the people who are speaking theese dialects sometimes don't know to define the connections with ancient Greek. Things are way better when you set someone who knows anciend Greek, with someone who only speaks greek as native language and with "small" explainations, then is he more familiar with it and understands a lot more and easy. A small tip: if you pronounce "Κοινή" as "koine" nobody in Greece will understand you because "ο+ι" makes an "i" and this should be pronounced "kini". This hapends because in all over the world (but not in Greece) if someone want to learn and studies anciend Greek, is learning greek with "Erasmian" pronounce. This term comes from a Dutch scholar, who tought ancient Greek in universities in Germany and England, named Desiderius Erasmus Geert who lived (1466-1536) at the time when the Byzantine Empire was just fallen and was conquered from the Othomans. For his complicated reasons, he claimed that the right pronounce of the greek diphthongs ει,οι,αυ,ευ,ου,αι (greek word δίφθογγος) should be separate as two vowel. This is a reason also when tourists are coming in Greece and saying that they have learned anciend Greek at the school or university nobody can understand them what they are trying to say. Thank You for the nice video

    • Coen80, I would argue that "την Μαρία αγαπάει ο Γιάννης" and "ο Γιάννης την Μαρία αγαπάει" are used, but usually not standalone. In a phrase like "Αφού την Μαρία αγαπάει ο Γιάννης ρε Κώστα, όχι την Ελένη", or "Αφού ο Γιάννης την Μαρία αγαπάει ρε Κώστα..." to change the focus of the emphasis, but the 4th example is probably not used at all. About the news, we use both, depending on the occasion. For example, we can say "η καινούρια προσφορά", or "η νέα προφορά". Ο Σκύλος με υ...

    • @@skoy21 Grrrrr these ypsilons! ;) Five different ways to write 'i' is a confusing thing. Though I have most trouble with the ypsilon, because there doesn't seem to be a clear ruling on when it's used (unlike η or οι for example) Thanks for clarifying that grammar part and for producing some actual examples.

    • Apparently some Chinese scholars in the 90s created the idea that all Western civilizations were based on lies - Ancient Greek was just a bunch of conspiracies directed by Germans, Turkish, and specifically Jews. Later this theory developed further that all other civilizations except the Chinese were either made up or largely exaggerated. These people clearly believe that Confucius was already inventing telescope and devising models of modern technologies.

    • Clearly this theory has nothing to do with Hitler's race bullshit, it was just some idiotic Chinese scholars believing Chinese civilization was the most superior and therefore finding reasons to reject all others.

    • Stone Chen your Chinese scholars are right. Chinese Civilisation had all been above other nations till West Europeans started to colonize third world nations (I'm Turkish. Consider this comment as a confession of a young Turkish patriot whose nation always lost to you. Your Civilisation is the only one that I personally both hate and respect). You are just underestimating Asiatic nations due to Western Civilisations late barbaric achievements. By the way, we don't have any business with the Greek history, just been their bodyguards almost for four centuries.

  • As a Greek-American who until the age of 13 didn't had any knowledge of the Greek language i have to say that when me and my family moved to Greece i had to take an intensive course in order to go to a Greek school. Even if i was considered as a talented boy in linguistic (cause i was learning the language very fast), i realized that when i finished the course and i was ready to participate in a class , the words and the meanings that i knew were only the 30% of what the native speakers express by saying them. Funny thing was that at the time i had a very strong accent which was showing clearly that i didn't grow up in Greece and my schoolmates were teasing me. After a couple of years when one of the lessons was the Archaic Greek i found it so boring and useless to learn. One year after i finished the high-school i was already in the University studying economics, a family friend gave me a speech about the beauty of the Greek language and i realized that i already new many words which were archaic. I found it so interesting and i decided to educate myself. During my journey to the archaic Greek i fell in love with linguistics. This helped me to be able at the age of 25 to be able to learn 3 more languages. After 12 years i moved to a German speaking country and this knowledge helped me to learn good German in 2 years without going to any school and with not so much contact with native speakers.I hope that my story can give a push to some people who really want to educate themselves , to try and learn the amazing language which is called Hellenic.

    • As a native Greek moved to an English speaking country I realized how the Greek language has influenced the world. Also I realized how easy it was for me to learn a third language knowing only Greek. I am coming from a Greek family from the south part of Greece. At my dads village they speak Dorian mix influence of ancient Greek, modern and Dorian. Very similar to Cyprus that I can understand super easy too. I traveled to South Italy when I was young and I could understand everything in Greci ( a Greek dialect mix with Italian words). Now I speak fluent Norwegian language ( I learned it in 2.5 years without too much effort) I understand also Swedish people too. I can read Dutch and get the meaning but I can't speak or understand them very easily. Now I am trying to learn Italian and I think I can master the language within 2 years too. The reason?? I have Greek roots and a language that made me understand the real meaning of a simple word. People these days speak a language like English but they don't really understand the real meaning of a word. In Greece every word makes sense because it has a root. As the video showed I was happy to watch it but at the same time I am sad that the Greek language is not a mandatory language in every country in the world. If people study Greek I am sure their mind will understand other things too.

In particular, the only word you will absolutely not hear in Modern Greek is Πάνυ. Some grammatical forms like in Γνῶναι βουλοίμην εἰ and καταλαμβάνουσιν have been dropped or modified, but the word roots themselves are the same in modern Greek (γνώση, βούλομαι, καταλαβαίνω etc). Basically you are ready for Modern Greek at this point. You would pick it up in no time :)

      @BlueLena@BlueLena Жыл бұрын
    • @@BlueLena Thank you. Being Italian, I thought that the differences between ancient and modern Greek were like the ones which are between Italian and Latin. Also in our language the roots are basically the same (obviously with many exceptions) like "italico, differenza, tra, antico, greco, essere, uno, latino, nostro, lingua, radice, fondamentale, uguale, ovvio, molto, eccezione" (which are the words I used till now in this comment) which derive from "italicus, differentia, intra, antiquus, graecus, esse, unus, latinus, noster, lingua, radex, fundamentalis, aequalis, obvius, multus, exceptio", but if I showed a latin text to Italian people (or I spoke in the latin language) they would understand very little. It occurs because of the grammar and the syntax, which are now very different than they were in Latin, and I thought it was the same way in Greek. So thank you for having explained me how it works in Greek, and I would be happy to pass from ancient to modern Greek as I finish studying it.

  • In 1957 a Greek politician delivered a speech in English, using only Greek words. I think some of you will find it interesting, so here it is: " Kyrie, I eulogize the archons of the Panethnic Numismatic Thesaurus and the Ecumenical Trapeza for the orthodoxy of their axioms, methods and policies, although there is an episode of cacophony of the Trapeza with Hellas. With enthusiasm we dialogue and synagonize at the synods of our didymous Organizations in which polymorphous economic ideas and dogmas are analyzed and synthesized. Our critical problems such as the numismatic plethora generate some agony and melancholy. This phenomenon is characteristic of our epoch. But, to my thesis, we have the dynamism to program therapeutic practices as a prophylaxis from chaos and catastrophe. In parallel, a panethnic unhypocritical economic synergy and harmonization in a democratic climate is basic. I apologize for my eccentric monologue. I emphasize my eucharistia to you Kyrie, to the eugenic and generous American Ethnos and to the organizers and protagonists of this Amphictyony and the gastronomic symposia.''

    • Langfocus i wish you focused on the vocabulary more. personally I find that more interesting than grammar, unless its some spooky alien grammar like chinese tones or something like that. but for greek it would have been more interesting to see how much scientific vocabulary you can fit into normal greek. like road signs using the word tahi-, like tachicardia. the grammar seems very run of the mill at least compared to romanian and french, my native language and the lang i studied in hschool, respectively.

      @RoScFan@RoScFan7 жыл бұрын
    • Well, that would be cool. Personally, I'd like a bit of an overview of phonology, to get some better insight into the sound of the language, but I like grammar and seeing similarities between Polish and Greek, and the sample sentences give you an idea of its sound (pitch accent?). Also, I've been waiting for Greek for a long time, so for me it's great.

      @BigBad-Wolf@BigBad-Wolf7 жыл бұрын
    • I was actually expecting a mention about the phonology, but I'll see if I can help a bit. First, greek is a very robust language phonetically. Like Latin, what you read is what you speak. There are strict (yet easy) rules in place, so if you know the rules, there is no way to mispronounce a word that you read, as there are no exceptions, and no silent letters. In general it's fairly easy to read greek. The two tricky parts (especially for an english speaker) are the dipthongs (two letters read as one, or in a different manner than you would expect), and the accents. Accents, are small single-quote marks placed on top of vowels, and they indicate which syllable you should emphasize in a word. For instance, in the word "ταχυκαρδία" (meaning tachycardia) the accent is placed on the second to last syllable, on top of the i letter. This makes the word sound like "tachycar-Thea". If I wanted to emulate the pronounciation of the english word which puts the emphasis on the syllable containg the letter "a", I'd write it as "ταχυκάρδια". Of course, such a word would be wrong, but it works as an example to show you how a word changes depending on where the accent is placed. An accent can be placed only on the last three syllables of a word. Single syllable words do not require accents (with the exceptions of "τι" and "πως" (what and how) when they are part of a question). Accents also apply only to lowercase letters. Never on uppercase. The only exception to that is only if it's the first letter of the world and is accented, such as in the beginning of a sentence or a name). Greek have 5 vowel sounds. A, E, O, I and U A/α (alpha) sounds like A in Apple E/ε (epsilon) sounds like E in End O/ο (omicron) sounds like O in Opera I/ι (iota) sounds like E in e-mail U sounds like U in Uber or like OO in Oops In the greek alphabet there are many letters that sound the same, and they exist so they can convey proper orthographical meanings in the written language. In ancient greek, they also had slightly different sounds. As such, O/ο (omicron) sounds the same as Ω/ω (omega). Ι/ι (iota) sounds the same as H/η (eta) and Y/υ (ypsilion) There is no single letter for U in greek, but it is constructed by a combination of O and Y (as a diphtong). There are 17 consonant sounds and respective letters in the grek alphabet Β/β (beta), sounds like V, Γ/γ, (gamma) sounds as if you're trying to pronounce the letter G but instead of firmly touching the back of your tongue to your throat, you perform a light touch and let the air flow between tongue and throat. The sound of Γ also changes depending on the vowel that follows, but it's generally a matter of how deep in your pallate you touch your tongue. If it's followed by O, Ω A, or OY, it's pronounced like W in Woman. If it's followed by I, H, Y or their equivalent diphtongs it sounds like Y in Yin. And if it's followed by E or it's equivalent dipthong it sounds like Y in Yen (the japanese currency). Δ/δ (delta) sounds like TH in The, Ζ/ζ (zeta) sounds exactly like the english Z Θ/θ (theta) sounds like TH in Thought, Κ/κ (kappa) sounds like the english K, Λ/λ (lambda) sounds like the english L M/μ (mi/mu) sounds like the english M N/ν (ni) sounds like the english N Ξ/ξ (ksi) sounds like X in Axe Π/π (pi) sounds like the english P Ρ/ρ (rho) sounds like the english R Σ/σ/ς (sigma) sounds like the english S Τ/τ (tau) sounds like the english T Φ/φ (phi) sounds like the enlish F Χ/χ (chi) sounds like H in Horror Ψ/ψ (psi) sounds like PS in Apps. The dipthongs add alternate spelling of letters and missing sounds AI is read as E(psilon) (or as ai in the word fair) OI and EI, is read as I(ota) (or as ei in the word rerceive) OY is read as OO in Oops ΓΚ and ΓΓ are read as the english G in Goblet. AY and EY are read as AF/EF or AV/EV depending on the letter that follows. If a diphtong is not accented then it is read/pronounced based on the rules above. If a dipthong is accented, then the accent goes on top of the second letter of the dipthong. If however the accent is on top of the first letter of the dipthong, then the dipthong is broken apart (solved) and is read as the two separate letters that comprise it. If a dipthong is found in a word and is not accented but the word requires that it is treated as two separate letters than a diphtong, then the second letter of the diphtong gets a solvent (two dots on top of it looking exactly like the german umlaut) like in the word "γαϊδούρι" (meaning donkey). The presense of a solvent, breaks the diphtong. A solvent is also used if the dipthong is accented on the second letter, and the word requires that the dipthong is broken. In that case both an accent and a solvent are used on the second letter (such as in the word φαΐ meaning food). And unless I'm forgetting something, this pretty much covers the entire ruleset of how greek sounds and is read. Here are some greek words to try reading and practice a bit: Σκουλήκι (worm) Αγάπη (love) Καλημέρα (good morning) Μουσακάς (moussaka) Σουβλάκι (souvlaki) Γύρος (Gyro) Αγγούρι (Cucumber) Παιδί (child) Ειρήνη (peace) Παιδάκια (little children) Παϊδάκια (lamb chops) Πεινάω (I am hungry) Διψάω (I am thirsty) Προίκα (dowry) Hope these help a bit

  • Fascinating. Greek grammar is pretty similar to my native language German: lots of inflections enabling a very flexible word order. I wonder how today’s Germanic languages would look like without the influence of ancient Greek which was used/known by scolars and priests all across Europe (besides Latin, of course). Greece definitely was the birthplace of European civilization.

Moreover in school we are taught about syntax and word roots (that is helping to understand a Latin word for example or much more a scientific terminology because you already know the roots so you don't have to memorize all the terms) so we are not taught how to actually speak ancient greek.

It is an ancient obligation for the Greeks to open their houses to travellers, to offer food to them and a bed to sleep.. If any Greek was harming a traveller he was damned by the Gods, so everyone in ancient Greece was helping the travellers in order to be blessed by the Gods.. Also when someone is visiting Greece, we feel proud for that visit and we like to help them to discover places that only Greeks know.. I personally always help tourists in the subway to find their destination and always say to them secret places to visit that are not in the touristic maps..

But you also need to have the passion and drive to learn new languages. Knowing 3 languages myself it has showed me it's not just about learning the language but also learning of the history behind it. At school I've learnt English and I never learned as much as I did talking and writing in English through the Internet. Same goes for any language. It's not just sitting in a room, reading a book. It's more. Talking with people who speak that language, finding the patterns behind the language... If you were a linguistic person you'd first learn the patterns and then figure out everything else... but that's just one part of the process of course :) For example thanks to anime and just hearing Japanese... I've found I really like learning languages and I wish I knew them all. Because it's not just the languages that are fascinating but the history behind them and how similar things you can find digging through history and how languages evolved. I'm no expert and these are just my thoughts I can recall right now.

So, the mistake is: Γεια σου αγαπημένε/-η! Γράφεις θαυμάσια (θαύμα=wonder😉)! Είναι ενδιαφέρον που το μόνο λάθος στις προτάσεις σου, είναι ένα, που κάνουν ακόμη και οι Έλληνες συμπατριώτες μου και ήθελα να σχολιάσω, χαχα! Λοιπόν, το λάθος είναι: πολλή αγάπη, not πολύ! this is the adjective: ο πολύς (much, for masculine) η πολλή (much, for feminine) το πολύ (much, for neuter) BUT the adverb is also πολύ (exactly like the neuter form) Keep in mind that love (αγάπη) is a feminine noun in greek, so the correct form is "πολλή αγάπη". But if you want to say, for example, "very instense love", then you don't need the adjective, but the adverb (πολύ), cause now it characterizes the adjective, not the noun. Therefore you'll say "πολύ (adverb) έντονη (=instense) αγάπη". Just to help a bit more.. Adjectives characterize nouns! Adverbs characterize adjectives or verbs! Πολλά φιλιά! (Lots of kisses!)

I have studied ancient Greek, because I have loved Greek history and Philosophy until today(the time now).) Firstly, I apologize that I can speak only a little bit of modern Greek.(And I regret that I didn't write any accents on the text because I have no grave and circumplex in my Iphone.) I'm studying Attic Greek in Korea, and I have just started to learn modern Greek since only few weeks ago. Although I'm not a native Greek speaker, and nor ancient Greek, I could recognize some words from modern Greek. Even here, I can understand some 'short' sentences native Greek wrote. Maybe they can recognize my Greek, too. Well... unless it is not that terribly broken. It was an awesome experience. Because for me, I can't understand my language which was written in 15th C or 16th C without special training. That's why I decided to learn modern Greek. As someone said, "Greek never have been disappeared." The oldest living language of which we know the history. And forgive me if I made any mistakes on writing Attic Greek. Someday I'll study Greek more and communicate with native speakers(whom I love so much) in their own language. Ευχαριστώ, γειά σας!

    • 박수민 amazing. If you learned ancient Greek you will learn the modern pretty easily because indeed despite the years the changes are are not that much. Greetings to South Korea from Greece.

    • Ευχαριστώ, I totally agree with you. It makes me so excited to learn Greek because I can feel the 3000 years of history. From Homer's Greek to Attic Greek that Plato and Aristotle used, and Koine Greek that the Bible was written by, and even Modern Greek which is still alive. I'll try hard as I can. Extolling your amazing ancestor, I always thanks to those great writers with my best manner. And most of all, Tzatziki is sooooooo delicious! That is the most critical reason that I can't stop loving Greece, haha :)

    • Nope, not yet. I had no chance to visit there. But Greece is definitely my next destination. I'll raise some money to go there :)

    • If you live in Western Turkey you most likely have greek great grandparents and greek background in general. Many greeks were assimilated into the turkish pop, that's why we look so much the same. I was in Izmir during last summer and I felt like I I was back in Athens lol x)

    • Jon Reid I'm living in izmir but my ancessors from the middle anatolia they are pure turkmen but you are right so many christian people turned islam due to ottoman's tax system and became turk. but also there is christian turks who became roman for example your old president karamanlis

    • +hacı mert Christian Turks? I'd say Turkish-speaking Greeks. They lost their Greek language but kept the Christian faith.

  • As a Russian I'd say that in Orthodox church we have a lot of Greek words, so if we go to the church and have liturgical practice we could get a little bit of Greek, especially church thematics

    • Ancient Greek is better than modern greek. Ancient Greeks had a completely different accent from the one we have today's Greeks. Type Podium-Arts Aristotle and watch the video (11 minutes long) to hear how ancient Greek was (a Greek speak in the video)
