I Bought EVERY Headlight Restoration Kit At O'Reillys *And Tested Them*
Headlight restoration is a huge deal these days. After cars switched to plastic headlight lenses we had to find ways to fix them when the UV coatings degrade and the plastic itself starts to break down. The plastic yellows or becomes hazy, reducing the light output and making the car look much worse. Now it seems like everyone makes a kit to fix them. Since I had 6 trashed headlights in the shop that needed fixed, I decided to buy every kit I could at O'Reillys and put them to the test.

The Turtle Wax kit really impressed me. I was not expecting it to be that good.
Aluminum polish compound. Hand applicator, microfiber buff by hand, NEW looking with no headache in a minute or two
I used the turtle wax myself. The clear coat did not last long and the headlights hazed in a couple of months.
@@2011joser yep
I tried it once, my headlight oxidized again in like a week. And when the headlight hazed again it was worse than it was before I used the turtle wax.
@@soap38 Try the Meguiar's kit. The end results (for me) weren't quite AS good as the Turtle Wax, but the lights stayed clear for months. Of course, NONE of these products are a permanent solution and the lights will always haze over again a few months down the road. The only way to permanently fix hazy lights is to replace the lens. If only automakers made these lenses out of glass instead of plastic, we wouldn't have this problem.
As an employee of O'reillys I always recommended the turtle wax headlight restore kit, have tried others as well but nothing beats turtle wax, thanks for confirming my opinion. Also the recent hires at most stores don't know the difference between a spark plug and a gas cap... just saying... They don't pay enough to hire true mechanics like me, but I am retired and do it for fun and a few extra bucks mostly.
Sylvania is BY FAR the best. Project Farm has a great comparison video of all the different kits. Sylvania made the surface look identical to a brand new light. Its amazing

I have a friend with a 2002 grand am, the head lights were so yellow you could not see the bulbs. I watched the video and went to O'reillys and bought the turtle wax kit. I had my doubts it would clean as well as the video but...OMG, they look like brand new. Thank you for your work on the video, I could have spent a lot of money on the wrong products .
I bought the Turtle Wax Kit today because of this video. To be honest, I was blown away with the results. I had extremely clouded headlights and would have been happy with a minor upgrade. We'll see how long it lasts but thanks for doing this test.
Imagine working with this plonker
The True Test is how will they look in a Week… or a Month from now?
So if you're on your way to Carmax to sell your car, swing by O'Reillys on the way to pick up the Rain-X kit and do your lights.
Turtle Wax, winner of the prestigious "WatchJRGo Headlight Restorer Award". I assume you're going to do a special for 300k. Congratulations on that, man!
Congrats on 300K! So excited and happy for you. Well deserved.
Damn he’s been on 300k for over a year?? That’s crazy. He makes great videos and I’ve been watching him for a long time, he deserves a lot more.
@@rileyn54 much agreed!!! Gotta keep sharing it and get to 400k! Such a good channel.
As an oreillys worker i love watching videos of products in our store so i can always recommend the best stuff for my customers! This video was awesome and keep up the good work guys!!!!!!
I'm 61 years old and loved Turtle Wax as a kid. Then as years passed, I started using the new kids on the block. Went back to TW last year and was surprised to find their stuff still works great. Now I watch this and I'm a believer. Congrats on the easy road to 300K. Just kidding JR. I'm still convinced you never sleep.
And it a whole lot cheaper on the wallet.
I use chemical guys, awesome stuff. Turtle wax and meguires are good too. Chemical guys has a wax with a low dust formula, and it shines really good.
Looks like RainX heard you. They upgrade their kit. It now has real gloves and a sealant. There is an attachment for a drill and 3 grades of sandpaper pads, and a polishing pad attachment. Wish there was a way to show you the before and after pictures of the headlights on my wife's 2011 SRX

Thank you so much for comparing these products. My headlights are atrocious, but I've never done anything but take my car through the car wash. I had no idea where to start. The options are intimidating for a neophyte! Now I'm excited to run to O'Reillys in the morning to get a Turtle Wax kit. 🐢
Awesome awesome AWESOME-ER! Being a retired mobile detailer (4 spine surgeries in 4 years) as you can probably tell by looking behind me at my polishing pads in my profile pic, I love seeing these reviews. I use to do a ton of reviews for Autogeek back in the early 2000's...I drove a yellow Ranger....and genuinely loved being surprised by the underdog product! As I was watching you, JRGo, use it, I could tell it was doing something special. I think honestly, because you didn't use a machine. With plastic, I think hand sanding is needed. Maybe the machine is making to much heat or can't contour enough, but the hand is better. A DA is better than a drill 100%!!!! I wish you would try it with a 3in pad and plate. Remember, with a DA you get more cut with a smaller pad as well. Once again thank for the time you both spent doing this!!!!
Great test, I really appreciate when someone takes the time and effort to review several off the shelf products. Excellent job!
Just did the restoration for the first time today. Went to a store and picked up the first restoration kit that I saw.. I'm so happy it was Turtle wax. Very pleased with the results!
I used the Turtle Wax Retorer and it has help up great now for 2 years. I am very please with it. And great price. 2002 Honda CRV. Food service glove? Worked great who needs more? Keeps cost lower. I was impressed with results for the price. Two thumbs up for me. 2 YEARS LATER IS STILL LOOKS NEARLY NEW.
I work at an automotive retailer in Australia and I constantly sell the turtle wax restorer kit to customers. Constantly having customers come back with big smiles and showing the end results. Good to see you guys are enjoying it too.
Turtle Wax has really upped their game here as of late the seal and shine is also a amazing product
Their ceramic spray waxes are great, too.
@@donmynack Seal and shine is fantastic and smells great too.
I agree I owned my own detailing business and was never married to a product. Bought a ton of Chemical Guys stuff and 3M stuff over the years. The Turtle Wax stuff has really surprised me lately. Their Hybrid Ceramic coatings are great as a drying agent and I recently bought their graphene line. I haven't had a chance to use it all but what I have used has worked great.
Yup, I especially like the new and improved spray wax. It has some kind of UV protection. Sorry but I mix and match my car cleaning products to get the best outcome.
Thought I was in a Project Farm video lol nice job WatchJRgo!
".....next, I'm gonna' freeze this for 25 days, then I'm gonna' heat it with this torch...."
Cerakote's kit is the best i've ever used and will never use any other kit. $18 and can seriously take any headlight and make it new, as well as lasting several years!!
interesting results! I used the Turtle Wax hand-sanding kit for years and then awhile back switched to the 3M with the drill sanding pads. they both work great but I'm too lazy to do all that hand-sanding with the Turtle Wax kit these days. I am definitely impressed with how well the RainX restorer worked though! for headlights that aren't too far gone, I've found Meguiar's PlastX with a foam drill polishing pad also works very very well for a quick restore. but the kits with multiple & progressively finer sanding pads/discs (and sealant) will always give the best results. the only caveat is you have to be careful with the drill-based kits - if you use too high a speed/too much pressure while sanding, you can actually burn swirl marks deep into the plastic surface of the headlight and those are a real son of a biscuit to buff out. ask me how I know 😬
I actually believe these headlight restoration kits have brought the value of all the 2000's cars up !
I stopped driving at night because my 2008 Acura TL lights were so bad, and now I drive at night all the time.
As an Oreilly customer I apperciate the whole lineup of the Turtle Wax, Turtle Wax 2-in-1 Headlight Cleaner & Sealant is also good. Turtle Wave Hybrid Solutions Cermaic is the best wax spray to apply on car paint too it blows all other waxes out of the water.
J.R. I just bought a Rain X kit from Walmart for $19.99 with a drill needed for sanding. It comes with 3 different grades of sandpaper and a buffer. Took 30 minutes for both headlights and they look Bran new. I had people ask me if I bought new lenses from the dealer. My lenses to start were 20year old completely white-coated looked impossible. I was skeptical, to say the least, and am extremely satisfied with $20. spent. Congrats on the 300k I would have thought you were way past that, You really do put out some great content. Here is to the next 300k sooner!
I used the Sylvania kit on my 2002 911 headlights and it worked great. The headlights were like the Xterra's and they look brand new. No glazing or any residual damage and their clear coat is fantastic. I had to order it from Amazon as none of the auto parts stores in my area carried the Sylvania kit. If I have to do another set of headlights, I will give the Turtle Wax kit a go. Thanks for the great info!
I saw another site's comparison and the Sylvania was the best and Turtle Wax was the worst of the group they tested….
I did use this too last week and yeah I agree this made my headlights looks brand new. It requires a lot of elbow grease to finish it though. This is another extensive youtube review that I follow that did a similar restoration review but better. kzhead.info/sun/nKh7ZblsiIead2g/bejne.html

I really like this type of video. Real day to day stuff that us simple folks can put to use. I have that same Turtle Wax kit and have used it on about 3 different cars. I was wondering how it compared to others. Another detailing video idea, is the ceramic coating and the steps to prepare and use. Enjoy all your content. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Peace
I've used that Turtle Wax kit before, it's really good, lasts a good bit too.
Is it still in good condition?
Love the 3M kits. The Turtle Wax kits just don't seem to last more than six months before I had to redo them. Going on well over a year on the 3M kit used on my Grand Marquis.

My lenses are like brand new !
Man Turtle Wax owes you a shout out John Ross!
I've only used Turtlewax since these head light cleaners became a thing. Always pleased with the results and never once felt the need to use the sanding pads included in each box. I will say that I learned to put a protective coating to preserve the look and found that NuFinish polish lasted best at about 12 months. My next box will come with a protectant which I'll try. Nice video guys...best I've seen on these products.
Thanks for the rundown. I went with the TW kit and got the same results. Inexpensive + works as advertised = win.
I’ve always used the Turtle wax kit on client’s cars and my own ones! The price. ease of use and results are always impressive!
Thank you for taking the time to do this video and spending the money on these products, definitely helps a lot!
I used the 3M about two years ago, and the clear coat they give you has lasted so far.
Thanks…the Turtle 🐢 wax product did wonders. My headlights were very yellow and cloudy. The first application took away the yellow film. Then, I left the white stuff on places where it was still cloudy for long amounts of time. Even overnight, and magic. There is still one area that I am working on. But now, it’s 98% better.
I bought the Turtle Wax kit for my 2002 X5 based on your video and... it's amazing! The headlights were so bad before that I was thinking of buying replacements! But for £10 this kit has totally transformed them and they really do look like new again!
Used the Turtle Wax one myself about 7 years ago on my truck - was blown away at how good it was. The protectant held up well too - didn't fade in the year left that I had it before getting another vehicle. For upkeep and general polishing, Meguiar's PlastX is *really* good - it is a mild polish as well as a chemical deoxidizer it can turn a set around in a couple minutes, like the RainX one, _but_ .... you have to apply some sort of UV protectant or they'll just start yellowing again. The UV protectant/sealant is the one critical thing in the long run if the headlights are to _stay_ looking good. That or the government allowing glass headlights again. ;)
What uv protector do you use???? For instant clarity, I just use acetone nail polish remover. Makes them crystal clear in one pass. Don't make more than one pass...additional passes cause the fog again. Don't get it on the paint.
@@Lili-xq9sn I haven't found one that lasts all that long yet. I tried waxes (normal and ceramic) that supposedly have UV protection, but best they'll do is maybe 3 months. Tried Meguiar's "Keep Clear" headlight coating, which is a clear coat paint, and that works for a lot longer. I find it's very soft though and doesn't dry as smooth as normal clear coats. A light buffing after applying it smoothes it out. Depending on exposure, the Meguiar's can hold up 6 to 12 months. I don't think one can do much better than that since any coating you put on is going to be a sub-millimeter thick thing, and the sun will easily break it down. Just have to keep re-doing the lights every so many months.
@@Dakiraun Thanks for answering. I'm down the rabbit hole looking at ceramic coatings. I don't mind decorating annually. I want it only for headlight plastic and windows (to make snow/ice much easier to remove.). I'll look at meguiars.
Thank y'all! I'm going to buy the RainX to start until I have some extra time and then I will use the Turtle Wax one. Appreciate the video!

I have had the best luck with the Sylvania kit. It has a clear coat that you apply as the last step that really makes the headlights look like new.
Yep best one out of all of them. Only thing better is 2K clear coat
Great video…the hands on comparison tests are the most helpful. Thanks
Turtle Wax has been my favorite for a long time and seems to last for about three years. Thanks for your video.

I'm over 55 with 23 years in the Army bad shoulder, bad back and recovering from a repetitive motion injury; so the least amount of elbow grease involved would play strongly into my decision. My GEN 1 taco is ALMOST 20 years old and needs restored about once a year. The Turtle Wax kit blew my mind, never would have guessed.
I was sitting on a Turtle wax kit for over a year before using it. Very happy with the results. The Volvo lenses had been previously polished, so there were existing scratching and buff marks that didn't go away. But overall a huge improvement. Then I found this video, and figured, well, we'll see what these guys come up with.

Turtle wax one is great use it all the time. It’s actually use compound first and it that alone doesn’t clear and clean you up then move onto sanding.
That's what I like most about it: Not all headlights require the same level of effort.
Try the SYLVANIA kit. Absolutely the best I have ever used. Final coat keeps them good for over a year.
Turtle wax was always good stuff. I have chrome polish from 1984 and it still works great. Literally takes the rust off chrome bumpers and mirror shines it.

I bought the Turtle Wax Headlight Restorer, on special at $4.99, to fix a 15 year old headlight on my 2007 Kia. Took awhile and had to use lots elbow grease but WOW! What an improvement. Headlight almost looks like new. Huge improvement.
The best headlight restoration kit is the Sylvania one hands down. The other ones don’t even come REMOTELY close. I’ve used the Sylvania one on headlights that were extremely extremely pitted and yellow and discolored and it literally makes it look like an absolute 10/10 brand new headlight. The lense is 100% clear and you can’t see any imperfections at all from any angle. It almost makes it look like the lense isn’t even there. I just used the meguiars and the turtle wax one and they were like a 6.5/10 compared to Sylvania. They made the lense clean and white, and definitely more clear, but they leave a haze on it and lots of imperfections. The Sylvania one comes with a wipe on clear coat, it’s different then a “clarifying wipe”. It literally makes it look perfect. The two main important things are the quality of the sandpaper, and it has to have a clear coat. The Sylvania one also comes with a spray that you put on first that washes off the yellow grime, then you use the rubbing compound with sandpaper, then you use the clear coat. It will look like crap when your all done, but then you wipe the clear coat on it and it magically looks perfect.
Well there's a recent test of all leading restoration kits in which 3M was number one, where heavy oxidation and old clearcoat needs tobe removed, You won't find better than 3M!!
300K! FYI, the CERAKOTE Ceramic Headlight Restoration Kit has the sauce for multi-year longevity with its bundled ceramic UV coating
Yep this is all I use anymore and I use it on every headlight i see! 🙈 De-oxidize (I use rubbing compound), 2000 grit hand pass, 3000 grit, then clean. Cerakote wipe simple and not too messy, some practice necessary... Lasts longer and looks better than any other kits I've used!
@@CamCanCars the fact that they'll sell you just the protectant wipes in bulk vs the whole kit so you can BYO sandpaper etc is awesome too
I used the CERAKOTE for plastic restoration. It worked great. Maybe JR could compare different trim restorers on these SUVs.
Yeah I did that on Amazon and thought it said only enough for 10 cars; so pleasantly surprised to see 50 packets of step 3 in box. I haven't used Cerakote trim restore yet, but have had good luck with Chemical Guys VRP on most stuff. Would love to see a comparison!
Cerakote all the way. I am extremely impressed on ease of use and results. I think it’s $25 on Amazon. I recommend you use masking tape around the headlight before applying the ceramic wipe.
One tip on the old fashioned sanding kits. Park it outside, and put the garden hose on fast drip, sitting on top, dripping down the face, and then you can sand away. The continuous water keeps you from burning the lens and keeps the paper from loading up. Used the sanding disk kits for a long time, but that RainX kit will be my next purchase.
Rain-x is a maintenance and the Turtle wax is the one that works for the price. great video.
Nothing beats this!... 1. Wet sand headlights 2. Heavy Duty Maguires compound with pad & drill. 3. Remove access product with 91% alcohol. 4. Spray them with 2K Clear coat & you r done! ....Lifetime fix!!!
I have used 3M in the past with a drill and it has worked well, but your result with Turtle Wax is eye opening. This is really useful, probably the most useful one you have every done. You may want to consider doing comparisons when it makes sense. How to fix cars is useful as well, but this appeals to a larger audience!
Turtle Wax for me, from my experience with it!
I used the Turtle wax on the brake lights and blinkers of my 99 Suzuki GSXR 750 and it made them look brand new also.
3m restoration kits the best, The demonstration here was wrong if they took the trouble to read the instructions first? The first two steps is dry sanding only!! It's the p3000 trizact you add water!!!🤔 😡
@@keithroberts5611 Ah, you are right. I forgot that as I used the 3M awhile back and it did work well. Perhaps that is why it worked better for me than here - I appreciate your pointing that out.
I recently used the 3M ultra kit on my '10 Corolla. I spent a good amount of time and dry sanded both the 500 and 800. It also specifies to use the sealing wipe in straight horizontal lines, starting with the top. I got results that look like the turtle wax kit did they basically look new and my headlights were bad enough to have cracking in them.
I used the, CERAKOTE Ceramic Headlight Restoration Kit, for my 2013 Corolla: and it has the 3000 wet sand, and 2000 wet buffer. I just did mine today, and my headlights look brand new!! And same, no circular patterns: only horizontal- except for step 1: you can use circular motions because they’re just oxidation wipes. 4 steps, takes about 20 minutes in total: just had to let my car sit for 60 minutes. I’ll recommend this product to anyone looking to easily restore their headlights, especially Women!
Turtle wax owes you., you clearly demonstrated just how good a product they have made.
Just used the TurtleWax on a 15 year old Saturn Vue..looks almost new. There is something about that spray lube that makes the sanding both easy and crystal clear. Sand first..then use the polish. Their directions are kind of backwards. They don't give you enough sealant for multiple cars so I purchased a bottle of "sealant only" so I could use up all of the other kit. Throw in some LED bulbs and you will have an incredible upgraded night driving experience.
As a fan of the 3M kit in the past I'm actually a little surprised by these results. Great test! The most important step is always the seal at the end and sadly most kits lack a sufficient one to last more than a year. That Turtle Wax kit is promising though!
I wonder if anyone has feedback with the turtle wax after at least a year?
@@bowieknifeTurtle wax is primarily an after care product, And not a full restoration solution, Buffing alone will not remove old cracking and flacking 2kmax and such like, No the surface has tobe removed by sanding (dry)

Turtle Wax is actually making some very good products lately if you watch the detailing channels. Their Graphene product is good, Ceramic Hybrid is good, and the ICE Seal and Shine has been good for awhile.
I found for me the best outcome was sanding. Wet sand from 800-1000, then 1500 then 2000. Good coat wax after, headlights still look good after 1 year.
I’ve been needing to do this to both of our vehicles. Thanks very much for steering me in the right direction with the Turtle Wax!

In the last couple of years Turtle Wax has really put out some great products. They've started being more visible on the "socials" and I've found that most of their recent Si/Ceramic products "got game" - they're not really a "joke" anymore - The "Wax n Dry" is my go-to for post wash spray (although it doesn't last much past the next rain).
