Meet one of the world's most elegant, beautiful dogs, yet feistiest and primitive. One that can SCREAM before its eyes are open as a baby to get rid of predators and who takes this otherworldly scream through to adulthood. This hunting dog is Japan's national treasure and its beauty is known worldwide, but is it as easy to care for a Shiba Inu as you think? Our experts Liz Dunhill and Michaella Dunhill Hall of Fantasa Team Vormund think otherwise. These top show winning ladies adore The Shiba Inu but want everyone to understand the real character of this breed so that you know just exactly what you are taking on before committing to one. Watch to find out..

    • Yeah, the western world tries to understand the dog through how other dogs act. It's should be seen more as a loyal wolf that's been domesticated. The Japanese allow the dogs to be their own animal and give them space understanding they prefer to have more personal space generally, but will keep an eye over it's territory and owner like a wolf you befriended while camping in the wild. If you stay there forever it will just chill there close to your camp fire and eat with you, etc. Once it becomes your friend it will stay there. These people think of it as a dog getting distracted, when it's rather a dog with wolf dna doing what it does naturally.

  • My family has owned 3 Shibas and tho each had its unique characteristics, what they had in common was: they place themselves 2nd lowest in the pack. My dad was the no1 alpha, absolute obedience. Either my mom or younger brother seems to have thought lower than the dog, boy did have an attitude, often didn’t listen, disobeyed. Despite its chill attitude towards strangers, the loyalty towards its pack (family) was really something.

    • My girl died last year at age 17. My heart so broken. Smashed. My breeder saw how much my heart hurt so she gave me another 1 year old female a few months later to foster, with the possibility of a keeping her. It did not take away the pain and the new dog is nothing like my previous dog. The new dog was perfect, already trained, but it was hard for me at first because I compared her to my previous dog and also because my heart was tired. But after 9 months the new dog has won me over. She is different than my first shiba, but so wonderful, intuative, goofy, smart, affectionate. She's brilliant, empathetic and alert. All the good things about a Shiba, I think you know what I mean. You will never have a dog like the one you lost, but another well bred Shiba will give you joy again when you are ready. If you have a relationship with a breeder maybe you can do similar to what I did and "foster to own".

I recently saw someone trying to sell puppies whose mother was quite obviously a mix of some kind, not even close to a shiba, and they were saying it was a rare blue shiba exported from Russia 🙄

    • @@Kaia.Duval. so cream and pinto have to be mixes and are not considered shibas? Do your homework then. Cream is a defect that makes them look all white, not showing the obligational orajiro inside the legs, chest, etc. As white doesnt show white... i Think in England they are still allowed to breed with them which is actually dangerous as they are not able to reproduce every colour, which actually killed some other colours in other japanese breeds already... Pinto is a defect making the fur show spots/intersections of other colours. As the colours should not be "mixed up", with a certain exception for the rarest but in my opinion most beautiful colour, sesame (meaning there should be consistent areas/marks of one colour) they are not accepted by breeding Standards either. Still, they are shibas... cream are considered "lucky puppies" in Japan. But you shouldnt breed with them...

The Shiba Inu lived to be 17 years old, but last year she fell off the balcony of our apartment in Berlin and had to be euthanized the next day. I think it was because of my Shiba Inu that I was able to survive in Berlin. I now have a small white Mame-Shiba (豆柴)in Tokyo.

    • Lol 😂 That’s a funny story! In Japan Shiba-Ken is not screaming type dog. We got many Shiba-Ken it’s a common dog in suburbs. We usually keep them outside in a backyard with a dog house (a little dog house he can enter to sleep or rest) with a bowl of clean water. It’s not meant to be kept inside. It usually enjoys outside, they guard the house looking out property and their dense coat keep them warm even in Japanese winter. We take them for a walk in the morning and at night twice a day and they’re independent dogs meant to be kept outside.

He was a pure 柴犬, and the gentlest and calmest, and the most patient dog I had ever seen. For a long time, I thought he was the representation of 柴犬's nature. Maybe he was a rare exception.

There were a small number of dogs who he welcomed into his pack, one was a half wolf named Ranger, who was the only one tough enough to "play" as rough as Darwin liked. He bullied most other dogs, even a 100lbs Golden Retriever. He loved tiny dogs, he loved puppies, and he was terrified of fireworks, but afraid of nothing else.

    • I disagree, this dog requires a responsible owner, regardless of if they are first time or not. I'm a first time dog owner, and my Shiba got her AKC star puppy certification last month. She is well tempered, and well trained for a puppy and I never stop training her. It's very misleading to say they aren't good for first time owners because of this misconception "experienced" owners get them and have no idea how to deal with them simply because they are not responsible owners.

      @HandleUnclear@HandleUnclear3 жыл бұрын
    • I said this under another comment but I can only partially agree. It's definitely useful to have the experience. But if you have the right kind of personality and temperament for this dog and you really want it and are willing to put in the immense breed specific research you can get away with it as a first time dog owner. If you're not willing or able to do this you won't get away with it even if you had 10 dogs before. It will be a lot more difficult for you if you never had a dog but it's totally doable. I adopted my Shiba from a family who had to re-home him because of complicated circumstances but they were first time dog owners and they honestly did a good job with him. I do want to work with him on certain things, he is a bit anxious and grew up a bit too sheltered but overall I am impressed with what they have done.

    • @@danimayb I agree people have to start somewhere, which is why I don't believe there is anything such as an entry level dog. I wouldn't get a frenchie in hopes to eventually get a Shiba, they are two completely different animals, not to mention regardless of breed individual dogs have different temperaments. People say I lucked out because my Shiba is not reactive, however the breeder I went with bred her Shibas based on health and temperament, which is why I went with her in the first place. Bad breeding practices and irresponsible owners will always result in a bad time for everyone, however there are always exceptions to the rule.

  • If anyone wants a shiba, find a reputable breeder that breeds for temperament. You will thank me later. Also, I’ve owned GSDs, worked with malinois, and my shiba is by far the smartest and most agile dog I’ve ever witnessed in my life. When they said this is a big dog in a small dogs body, they’re not kidding. Mine plays with dogs that weigh 4-5 times my shiba, she out maneuvers them and outsmarts them constantly. It’s like watching the Olympics. Shibas also can live to be 20. So if you get one, you’re in it for the long haul.

    • Nick Meersschaut they’re all different. Mine hasn’t met a person or an animal it doesn’t like. However she has boundaries, if another dog jumps on me while I’m holding her, she gets very angry. If another dog tries to take her belongings in her home, she gets upset. Other than that, this is why I speak upon temperament. You can get a very aggressive shiba or you can have one that won’t stop licking you, like mine. 😂

Shiba Inu and Akita Inu are very similar, but Akita Inu has fluffier fur than Shiba Inu because Akita Inu is from colder area. The area of white fur above the eyes and the amount of fur around the ears make them easy to distinguish.

  • I've had mine for 12 years and she walks off-leash, listens really well, and is great with other dogs. I took her off the hands of a grandmother who found out she was "too much to handle." She grew up with an Akita, who passed away a year or so ago. My parents have a poodle. My sister has a lab mix. And my girlfriend has a bull terrier and had a jack russell. Callie can stay at anyone's house, problem-free and without incident for any period of time - a day, a week, a month. My mom actually BEGS me to go on a trip or have a busy week, so she can dog-sit her. Then, it's hard getting her back, lol. She doesn't chew things up; she doesn't complain; she is very independent...but also very loving. She just likes her space at times...but, hey, SO DO I!!. She is literally the greatest dog you could ever have. Everywhere I take her, she's a hit. People can't stop asking about her. And she is so respectful and loyal that I almost feel bad that she tries that hard to impress me that much. I have only owned one shiba and others have had them and had different experiences. But, with the right amount of effort, attention, and socialization...it'll be the best thing you ever did. She's getting up there in age, but you would think she's still 3 years old. I think she has plenty of years left in her, but I can't begin to think what it would be like without her one day. She's that special.

I'm a first time dog owner, and my Shiba got her AKC star puppy certification last month. She is well tempered, and well trained for a puppy and I never stop training her. I don't have experience with other dogs or breeds, so I can't say how much harder she is to train, but I know you have to be more stubborn and more patient than your Shiba. It's very misleading to say they aren't good for first time owners; because of this misconception "experienced" owners get them and have no idea how to deal with them simply because they are not responsible owners. Your Shiba as far as I know will need daily training, as they will always be testing your boundaries and if you give them an inch they take a mile. Do your due diligence on research, and be prepared to invest time, and energy in training your dog (this holds true for all dogs regardless of breed). A Shiba will be a nightmare for an irresponsible owner, it's as simple as that and if a person has a terrible Shiba it's a testament to their lack of effort in training their dog (unless the dog has neurological issues which is already quite uncommon in primitive breeds)

I knew what I was getting into when I got my little Shiba, got her when she was 5 months old, she was scared of people and going out for walks, I hired a trainer and after a year with her, she´s the most social Shiba ever. At home I trained and taught her since day one, it´s constant work for everyone in the house, positive reinforcement, lots of discipline, and firm voice/hands/eyes, they are very intelligent and read our body language easily. The reward is unimaginable, she´s adorable, fun, quirky, and has ways of showing her love for my sister and me. I was scared of messing up, but now I don´t have any regrets.
