All of these relationships churn my stomach, especially Jerry Lee Lewis marrying his adoptive first cousin when he was 22, and she was 13. Charlie Chaplin also tended to marry teenagers, with his oldest wife being 18 when they got married.
I was shocked when I first heard about the Jerry Lee Lewis story. I was just working on a pitch for a Jerry Lee Lewis biopic where he's depicted for who he truly is: a predator. The fact that Myra, his cousin, was in middle school shook me to my core. Same with Aaliyah and R Kelly. I was pissed off that the Aaliyah movie romanticized the relationship. I can't imagine how traumatized Aaliyah was at that time and the fact she carried that trauma all the way to her death is even sadder.

I feel like dating younger is seen as glamorous and reflects positively on the older person, so I don’t see this kind of stuff going away. At worst, it still ends up on the “exciting/funny/steamy” end of publicity. I had a front row seat for a marriage that was hurt by its age gap; I hated seeing what it did to my mom. So, even if a gap isn’t a crime, I always have a low opinion on such relationships (I don’t say anything though…).
