CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) imagines her life with Sweeney (Johnny Depp) after they escape.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical thriller comes to the big screen in this adaptation directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Timothy Spall, and Alan Rickman. Embittered at having been wrongly imprisoned and determined to seek vengeance against his accusers due to the grim fate that befell his wife and daughter while he was incarcerated, ex-convict Sweeny Todd (Depp) returns to his hometown and opens a modest barber shop. The one thing different about Todd's shop, however, is that no one who walks in for a trim is ever seen again. Subsequently branded "The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" by the frightened community, Todd continues with his murderous exploits with a little assistance from his amorous accomplice, Mrs. Lovett (Bonham Carter) -- whose popular meat pies secretly have a most unsavory ingredient.

I love that despite this being a fantasy, she doesn't change anything about Sweeny's personality. The only difference is that he loves her.
Does he, tho?
@@cesaralfonsofrancoibarra8895 In the fantasy? Yes. In their real life? Probably not.

And Sweeney Todd is still incredibly uninterested in her IN HER OWN FANTASY😂😂

I love how at their wedding instead of saying “I do” Sweeney ponders it then just nods as if to say “sure, fine I guess.”

@@xinaily yep! filming was during 2007 which was when she was pregnant with her daughter nell
If you think about it, it's kind of sad. Because she loves him so much, and he doesn't. Even in her little fantasies he looks all grumpy and uninterested. It's like having a crush, and that crush doesn't like you back..
Are you talking about Harley Quinn and Joker?
SheyNaveed That could be very included. Their relationship is sad as well. But a difference could be the Joker abuses Harley.
Leah Fox Not anymore. Suicide Squad changed that relationship. It's no longer manipulative but a poster for 'couple goals' that girls post on their instagram.
SheyNaveed Well, then let me switch that to *Has abused* More in the past TV shows maybe. I haven't actually seen sucide squad yet. 😃
It's sad but she's also such a selfish and manipulative character that by the end I didn't feel too bad for her. When you think about it, had she been honest to him from the beginning then no innocent people would have had to die. She caused him more pain by keeping the truth from him.

I love when he puts his hand on her leg then pulls away. At first I thought it was just for comedy but now I think it shows what affection he had for Lovett. That deep down, he might have felt SOMETHING for her, but do to the fact that his heart is just too full of anger and vengance, he wouldn’t be able to really love her, but him agreeing to go on a picnic with her and Toby and affectionately touching her leg, I believe was his own subtle way of showing her that this would be the closest thing he could ever come to caring for her.

Okay, tbh, I think he was sort of, maybe having an inner conflict. I think he could've ended up by the sea with her if he got the judge. I believe he was just a negative person, and had affection for her, but he was upset.

And she did it perfectly. 👏 Helena Bonham Carter
And she was pregnant
The music is really really hard to follow, I love her version of this song. It fits her so perfectly.
Isn’t it lip synced?
@@noahgudgeon yes, but she recorded it in the studio before shooting the film so she still had to sing, just not on the film set. (im assuming, because that's how most movie-musicals are done).
Sad how her face falls at 2:09. She's not as naive about their relationship as she seems.
It's incredible how the colour details shift as the film progresses. As the meat-pie shop gets more customers and Sweeney Todd becomes less focused on his vengeance against the Judge and just bides his time with casual murder as he waits for the next opportunity, there's gradually more colour in the scenes. It's still muted, but compared to the almost noir-film aspect in relation to the bright and colourful flashbacks, it is significant as well as symbolic. And even in the costumes, while the fantasy has everyone in brighter colours in a colourful world, Sweeney Todd is always in the black and white colour scheme
Not sure which is scarier The fact Toby is so innocent and doesn't know what their lunch was made of Or The fact Mrs. Lovette and Sweeney KNOW what their lunch is made of but still eats it anyway...

1:51 I remember seeing this in theaters, expecting the movie to be terrible, but ended up loving it. This scene really blew me away not only by how colorful the beginning of this scene was, but by how quickly everything fades back into that gloomy dark overcast look of the city life. The overall tone and look of this movie amazes me still. So well done and beautiful.

@@xxxxxxuan they mean the cinema
Its a Tim Burton movie. Sunlight only exists witin daydreams
The movie intentionally has a Gothic setting, they know EXACTLY what they were doing.
To me this scene/song is one of the saddest of all considering what happens later on in the film.. It's like Mrs Lovett really wants to be happy with the man she's been fantasizing about for years and he just rejects her completely, even in her daydreams. I know that he was still in love with his wife, and that Lovett was going about the whole 'making him fall in love with her' act all wrong, but I still find it heartbreaking that he showed her no affection what-so-ever. If only the end of the film was them living happily by the sea.. ;-;
Although, I've got to say, looking at it from a different point of view, this scene is quite funny just because of Sweeney's I-Hate-All-Of-You-What-Am-I-Even-Doing-Here? face throughout the whole song. xD
Eh, he does show her a little bit when he puts his hand on her dress, but then she says "Married nice and proper" basically telling him to take his hand off XD
I think that he could have developed an affection for her eventually
That's one sided love for ya, unrequited love. It happens, people fall in love with someone but their love is not returned, because they don't love that person and/or they love someone else. You can't force love, it's given. In some ways I agree with you, after he got his revenge for killing the judge that ruined his life he could have moved on and found peace by the sea with Mrs Lovett. That ending could have worked for me, but this isn't my story so it ended on a darker note.
Story of Sweeney Todd was set in 1846, volleyball didn't come around until 1895, 49 years later.

Tim Burton does such a terrific job visually that I never realized how beautiful this song is. listening to just the music will give you a totally different experience. I would always skip this song when listening to the soundtrack, but I heard it on shuffle a few days ago and realized it's one of Sondheim's best. a masterpiece.
If you've been listening to the film soundtrack, might I suggest the original cast recording? Most of the songs in he film, including this one, have cuts that affect their musical structure; although the cuts make sense in a cinematic sense. By The Sea packs a much greater punch on the OCR.

Alex Arand Yeah, if you call stuff her in an oven any better lol.
Joker and Harley disgust me
I love how she sings” by the sea” it’s so harmonious and calming
I love how Todd is just so tramatized from murdering all those people and lovetteis just like "Here have all my love fantasies and marry me and stuff and rainbows!!!" And he just continues to be tramatized....
That little hand on her leg he does at 1:45 shows a lot of unspoken love
No it doesn't, it's just shows acceptance because he's still got that scowl on his face and he just as quickly pulls his hand away from her.
It's physical subtext. Even though he constantly appears to be terrible towards throughout the whole movie. He is unable to keep his hand there for a long time because he doesn't want to give away that he actually cares about her, in his weird way. That little touch was all that was needed because from people who don't share a lot, a little is all that's needed.
I ship them
I DON'T CARE! I SHIP IT!
On the contrary, he's utterly manipulative and doesn't give a shit about her
All she wanted was a family. She's been some for years until she met the guy that she's been fantasizing about. She wanted to have a family and would do anything for her family. Sadly she was going about it wrong
Kaye S. her only mistake was she didnt get rid of his wife , if she took care of that , she could have had her happy ending :'(
Hannah Heartsy Errr if she did that, she wouldn't deserve her happy ending. And the "love" she would get from Todd would be fake and not because he chose to. It is cruel to force someone to love you, when they are in love with someone else. Feelings can't be helped, but actions can be helped.
Hannah Holly she wouldn’t have done that. It’d be too cruel. She wasn’t a murderer.
Jaselle Because that would have been the murder that tipped her over the edge to no longer deserve a happy ending? She literally cooks and eats people. She’s not the good guy and she doesn’t “deserve” a happy ending.
The movie that makes me fall in love into Johnny depp. He is such a great actor
She imagined them as one big happy yet dark family. Even Toby was there.
the way he nods instead of saying I do
He must be fun at parties.
Something you probably noticed, but- the rest of the movie, in London, there's no bright colors, it's very dull and sad looking, but in Ms. Lovett's fantasy, it's all bright and happy, and that just makes me so sad knowing how the movie ends. Cuz like- she likes him and he just doesn't care, I have a love hate relationship with this movie.
0:15 LOL Sweeney is uninterested, it’s like he’s a prisoner. Even his outfit is like an old fashioned prisoner’s Uniform.
It's also how men's swimsuits looked in that time period, I believe
I think it's a 1900's swimsuit hahahahaha or closer to 1950's, I don't know. But I don't doubt that Tim wanted to refer to prisoners too.

i love that Sweeney has a really uninterested face through the whole thing
Even in her fantasy she can’t imagine Todd with at least a smile
I have a different vision from this scene. In the play, this actually is a scene where Mrs Lovett is saying all her desires to him, including PROPOSING marriage, and he's nodding and saying "everything you want", clearly not paying attention and popping his mind on his own fantasies of revenge. I think this song shows that Mrs Lovett doesn't want a bloody and criminal life forever. Afterwards, I believe this scene is related to the dialogue where she says to him leave his grief on the past and that they actually had something, "even if it's not like I imagined". He looks at her like taking it seriously until Anthony interrupts them both. When he kill the judge, he sing to his blades that they "can rest now". I believe Sweeney was seriously, seriously damaged, and his connection with Mrs Lovett was the only hope for him to have a normal life. The tragedy for them both happens when he feels betrayed and kill her.
my two sides: realizing it’s friday(mrs Lovett) Realizing it’s Monday (Sweeney Todd)

This cute scene was my favorite part of the whole movie. The song was good and catchy, Sweeney's face was a hilarious mood and it was so cheery, I love their outfits, especially Todd's bathing suit. I know they're both mentally ill and all but I was kind of rooting for them to live Mrs. Lovett's fantasy with little Toby in the end and have Todd fall in love with her, I shipped them so much, I don't like the ending 😫
