Bishop Burton | East Yorkshire, England.
Filmed on 09.04.2024
In this blustery springtime walk we take a stroll through the unique and pretty village of Bishop Burton which is situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds in the East Riding of Yorkshire, about 3 miles west of the market town of Beverley.
Got a spare five minutes? View Bishop Burton from above by watching the 'From The Air' film which accompanies this walk.
In 1934, the village was described by a renowned architect as one of the 15 fairest villages in the land, and with its trademark black and white houses, village greens and attractive pond it is not hard to see why images of the village continue to figure in many books and calendars.
The village can be traced back to prehistoric times since traces left from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Romano-British eras provide evidence for human activity in Bishop Burton for at least 10,000 years. The Domesday Book mentions that the village once belonged to the Archbishop of York, which explains the origins of the name.
The tower of the All Saints Church was erected in about 1240 but a church probably existed on the site from the early 8th century. The church contains a wooden bust of John Wesley carved by James Elwell of Beverley; Wesley preached several times in the village and his bust was originally located in the Wesleyan chapel built in 1840 which still survives today.
A conservation report defining Bishop Burton's special interest states; 'The special character of the Bishop Burton Conservation area is to be found in the survival of this former estate village, whose predominantly white painted cottages are grouped around its two greens and Mere. It nestles in a hollow in the terrain which, with impressive tree cover, on its edges, adds to a feeling of enclosure. It has some strong characteristics, including the importance of its open spaces and its disciplined architecture, where features such as the use of white-painted brickwork, short chimneys, rustic porches and gabled dormers all feature strongly. In the summer, the importance of the trees on its greens and the visually cooling effect of its water create a balance to which other villages can only aspire.'

|| About Walk The World Away ||
Hello everyone, my name's Jamie Paul and this is my walking channel. Since I love the outdoors and walking in nature so much I decided to start filming my walks so that I could share them with you lovely people wherever you are in the world. In an ideal world I would probably build a small house on top of one of the Lake District fells in England, grow my beard down to the ground, and walk forever through the beautiful Cumbrian mountains until I could walk no more. Sigh. But instead, being a more practical kind of bloke, I am on the search for smaller, more accessible walks around England that I can capture on film and share with you all.
I focus my attention on the most scenic and peaceful walks I can find, either in the countryside or along the coast, and I do love to check out old villages, cities and towns too if they pass the picturesque test and have some historical interest thrown into the mix. I do love really old stuff for some reason.
Please do let me know in the comments if you know of any beautiful places to amble around that I just haven't considered yet. And yes, this a new channel so bear with me as I endeavour to bring you high definition 4K video with quality sound. I have an arts degree in photography so I know a little bit about how things should look, and quality is the name of the game here.
And as always, please like and subscribe if you love to walk too, and we can build the channel together as we walk the world away.
Peace,
Jamie Paul 🕊️

  • What I find noteworthy is the complete lack of trash, soda cans, etc strewn along the way- everything is so neat and cared for. AMAZING!

    • I must say, I don't see a lot of trash on the streets these days. Maybe in the bigger cities, but even then it's not loads.

    • @@walktheworldaway No in England probably not. I have taken numerous "walks" all around England and so far have not notice any trash. Here in New England I spend time every spring on my road picking up as many as 100 bottles and up to 3 large bags of trash in the 3 mile walk I take regularly. Kudos to the Brits😊

    • Not only is there no garbage, but there are also no people. And no cats, no dogs, no... birds. It's some kind of toy village, with identical clean barracks.
