For buyers interested in diesel power, the C220d is a strong option in the C-Class lineup. Its 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder makes 197 horsepower, which is enough to hustle the C from 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds. That's on par with the BMW 320d despite having slightly less horsepower. The C220d's turbodiesel grunt provides good real-world acceleration, making it feel peppier around town than the base C200 gasoline model.
Fuel efficiency is one of the C220d's biggest selling points. Mercedes estimates it will achieve over 60 mpg on the European testing cycle. While EPA ratings are still pending for the U.S. market, the C220d should significantly outperform its gasoline counterparts at the pump. The downside is that diesels often sound a bit clattery at idle compared to gas engines. However, the C220d quiets down nicely at highway speeds. For long-distance driving comfort and wallet-friendly running costs, this diesel C-Class is tough to beat.
The latest Mercedes C-Class has an upscale look and feel that punches above its weight class. With a design heavily influenced by the flagship S-Class, the compact executive sedan appears properly prestigious. However, the interior doesn't quite live up to its exterior, with some cheaper plastics betraying the C's more attainable price point versus Mercedes' larger luxury sedans.
Under the hood, the C-Class offers a variety of powertrain options including gas, diesel, and plug-in hybrid variants. The C300e plug-in is the efficiency star, able to travel up to 68 miles on electric power alone. When the gas engine does kick in, transitions between electric and combined propulsion modes are seamless. The C300e can hit 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds when using both power sources.
On the road, the chassis tuning hits a nice middle ground between comfort and sportiness. The standard suspension soaks up bumps well in its softest setting while the optional air suspension on the C300e plug-in is even more plush. Engaging the sportier suspension modes tightens body control for more engaged handling, though the C never feels quite as eager to change direction as rivals like the BMW 3 Series.
The C's interior is a tech lover's paradise with the latest MBUX infotainment system and crisp digital displays. However, some cabin materials feel low-rent for a car wearing the three-pointed star. Rear seat space is also just adequate for the class, trailing the likes of the Skoda Superb.
