Why Greek Football & Olympiacos Are So Controversial

Greek football and the Super League Greece was rocked by a match-fixing scandal in 2015, bringing to light accusations of wide-ranging corruption that supporters had suspected for decades.
Some of the nation's biggest clubs, including Olympiacos, were implicated, but almost six years on, little action has been taken.
So in today's video, HITC Sevens takes a look at the ongoing issues afflicting football in Greece, the history of the allegations of corruption, and whether a positive outcome is likely anytime soon.
None of the clubs or individuals mentioned in the video have been found guilty of any crimes in any courts anywhere in the world, unless stated otherwise.

  • Football is a small depiction of our country as well. Whatever happens in Greek football happens in real life as well. Everything is fixed and corrupted. It likely will never change. Sadly...

    @msfootballgr9655@msfootballgr96553 жыл бұрын
    • Yes, exactly. Nothing will ever change because money runs the world, either we like it or not. Not only is it a depiction of countries and their type of football, but also is a depiction of transfers. Agents like Mino Raiola use players to get a few bucks. Recently, you have Brian Brobbey. Didn't want to renew his contract, influenced by Raiola. And don't get me started on Italian football. That's a story for another time.

After what happened, almost everyone left and the club got into a financial crisis, basically destroyed the biggest rival of Olympiakos. This also had a huge impact in Greek European performances. • Unfortunately that's half the story. There is immediate connection between team owners and political parties. The HFF have for the last 3-4 years a new president backed by PAOK and AEK owners. The previous 3 years displayed significant changes in Greek football such as the appointment of foreign referees in Greek derbies and the induction of VAR, the rise of PAOK at the same time its owner Mr Savvidis started getting major state properties in Salonica for very low prices, the New stadium of AEK after the club got relegated to the third division and their debts got magically erased by law, all of which are unfortunately part of the same corruption process. There have been claims and actual convictions of team having the same owners (PAOK and Xanthi), a case that forced the previous government to change the law that dictates punishments in the same night the ruling was announced so that PAOK don't get relegated and allegations that PAOK uses the same system of satellite teams as Olympiacos used to do. The same people that got convinced in the Koriopolis scandal remain still in Greek clubs, such as Volos NFC (a distorted offspring of Olympiacos Volos), with its owner and actually mayor of the city previously a Marinakis supporter, now a Savvidis one. FYI Volos created 5 years ago, got in the first division extremely fast coincidentally after the change of the HFF backed by Savvidis. Marinakis backed the new government of New Dimokratia in 2019 and within one year he won the league and got acquitted. So there are two corrupted gangs fighting each other right now and actually the better team is winning the championship right now.. So at least there's that

    @slayerfotis7@slayerfotis73 жыл бұрын
    • The HFF president backed by AEK was fully impartial and no significant issue popped up nor were there any issues regarding discrepancies and favoritism towards AEK. His worth has been confirmed by people of all affiliations. Debts "magically" disappearing was the law back then. The team became an amateur club instead of remaining a professional one. And it kinda fitted the talent of the team to be fair. The team still climbed back to the top tier fair and square. Any team could have used that rule at the point. I agree it was not that logical of a rule which is why it does not exist anymore. But you can not blame a club for playing by a rule that made the most sense for them. AEK's new stadium is fully legal, got all the necessary permits and financial aspects required. There is a lot of criticism that can be pointed to AEK's way, but not corruption and not playing by the rules. Especially when the 2008 title got taken away from them in such a manner.

    • @@probrosdfa8947 Oh come on even though AEK didn't particularly benefit from the corrupted situation of Greek football (although they won a championship based in a very controversial decision three years ago), its president (Melissanidis) has benefited immensely. He bought the team debt free, even though it was legal but the same law got pulled right after that and other teams such as Iraklis got played. He became the major shareholder during the privatization of the Greek state betting organization. He crushed every justified and unjustified resistance from local authorities and residents for the new stadium, with major political influence and fan pressure, even with threats, and he also influenced the election of an AEK we'll known supporter as mayor of New Filadelfia (the municipality in which AEK's Stadium is located), a thing that mostly Savvidis and Marinakis are known for. He influenced, in many cases even with voter fraud and buying votes allegedly, a great amount of the election of the local HFF departments. The only thing is that he never had satellite teams like the others. He tried to bring down Marinakis together with Savvidis but somehow the last two years have given up (*coughs* same political party *coughs*). The whole system is fucked. Lower leagues are extremely fucked with presidents that money launder, fix matches and are yes men to the owners of the big teams. There are major links with Greek football and organized crime. And those things, even greater than hunting down Marinakis, were never addressed after Koriopolis. Greek football is fucked. After Covid is way more fucked. Sad times, no end in sight.

    • @@slayerfotis7 I'm really struggling of how AEK is the controversial part of winning that title. Saturday night they're top of the league with a nice point gap to second placed PAOK thanks to justified penalties handed to PAOK earlier in the year. in that very night the points were returned to PAOK and the previously empty Toumba (based on penalties) suddenly got sold out. Then during the game after talking to his offical the referee chose to disallow a goal labeled as offside. Then after PAOK president cause havoc on the pitch by bringing out an actual gun (prohibited by law) the referee suddenly decided to count the goal from his locker room... Where no cameras existed to say what had happened that led him to said decision. And then due to the gun incident measures were taken. How does that make it controversial on AEK's behalf? The thing about New Philadelphia, did he really put him in that office? The majority of people in that are born and bred as AEK fans, isn't it logical that they would vote for someone that was gonna restore history and bring back AEK to where she belongs? In regard to him getting the club without any debts etc. Yes he followed the law and did it. How do you blame him? Other teams did it as well. It's sad what happened to Iraklis and it's nice to see fans trying to restore the team, but that's not sth AEK can be blamed for. Plus the rule didn't get changed as soon as AEK did that. Some years did pass.

But, according to the district attorney, the gang that fixed matches in Greek football existed and he was the main figure in it. It's just that the crimes were "expired". And, between you and me, everybody knew he will be acquitted. But, in reality, nothing was answered in these proceedings. For example, after the disgraceful match against Panathinaikos in 2011, the one characterized as "the biggest alteration of result in the Greek Championship", he was recorded talking on the phone with another main figure of the match-fixing scandals in Greece, taking the advice to "send security in order to protect the referees of this match." Can you answer why he had to do this? I guess not. And don't tell me that all multi-millionaires have ties to organized crime. I know that. But no one has done the things that E. Marinakis has done to Greek football. No one.

However you must be severely brainwashed or just an utter pos if you support they are innocent. Their ways of manipulation are blatantly clear. Then when there is an accusation against their methods , they gaslight everyone. This country is a disgrace to every humane and intelligent person and I, among others want to abandon it.

It's throughout every season for the past 20 years, half the matches I watch (and trust me, I was a passionate Olympiakos supporter from 2010 up to 2016) seem to be fixed. The continuous mistakes in favor of them can not be a mere coincidence. The situation in European competitions where the corruption is very real too, can not justify Greek corruption. We have to be better than this crap. Olympiakos and Paok have very talented teams at the moment and they have a real chance to reinforce the league and the national team.

  • Very well done video. Now let's talk about some simple facts and some personal opinions mostly based on Greek clubs. FC's are businesses and the people running them use them for either making some profit and/or laundering money. With enough connections and a good legal team you can get away with it either by never getting caught doing it , having the offence dismissed prior/during court or taking so much time that it reaches its statute of limitation. Big4 (AEK-OLYMPIAKOS-PANATHINAIKOS-PAOK) club owners also have the advantage of being in charge of an army of fans which means political pressure to make things go your way (in the other businesses they run outside football) with a little push by the state as to not upset your fans (voters) There are no Saints in Greek Football. The majority of presidents from the major league down to the amateur/semi-professional leagues are or have been in some way of form criminals. The loan system you mentioned is much deeper that what it seems. There are numerous cases where Olympiakos would approach teams to buy a player often for an absurd amount and the player would remain in the team he was bought from for few years until they released him back to the team on "free transfer" or he would roam around the Greek league on loan until he was set on "free transfer" list. Many of those players have ended up playing in teams lesser than the one they originally came from , lower divisions or mid-bottom teams in weaker championships around Europe. Coincidence that's repeating stops being a coincidence. Another fun facts about this is that players would spent a good 3-4 years in a mid-top club with descent/good performance and never even be considered to be called for the National team. As soon as they signed for Olympiakos they were in even though they had zero official games played for them. We all know that National team caps = money for the club that owns you , boost for your price as a player and more exposure to scouts. Lastly if people think that feuds between presidents or the government and presidents is about football then please go get a lobotomy to save us all. It's about money and influence. Football has stopped being a sport for the people but a playground for the rich. P.S Another fun fact. Theodoros Theodoridis the GS of UEFA (former Hellenic Football Federation member) is the son of the late honorary president of Olympiakos Savvas Theodoridis (veteran player of the club). Just saying.. P.P.S There has not been a president of Olympiakos for the last 40+ years that was not in legal trouble. Only half of them got convictions and spent/ are spending time in jail..

Look, all of you guys who live outside Greece have little to no idea how much dirty everything is, particularly sport, Marinakis and his allies (one of whom is Yannis Alafouzos, owner of Panathinaikos, and owner of the Skai group, which is essentially Greece's equivalent of Fox News) used their media and their influence they have on football fans in order to bring the far-right party New Democracy into power with tragic consequences in our lives, particularly in these COVID-19 times and its awful mishandling of that..

So briefly: 1989-1995: Panathinaikos owner is George Vardinogianis (shipowner,oilowner) and the political party in goverment is New Democracy (liberal-conservative). Panathinaikos dominates the League 1996-2003: Olympiakos owner is Sokratis Kokkalis (entrepreneur,telecommunication,shipowner) and the political party in goverment is PASOK (social democratic). Olympiakos dominates the league 2004: New Democracy is re-elected, so Panathinaikos wins the league. Then changes owner. 2005-2009: Olympiakos dominates the league, in Sokratis Kokkalis last years. 2010: Panathinaikos wins the league (Djibril Cisse era). Olympiakos changes owner. The new owner is Evaggelos Marinakis (shipowner, drugs, guns). Marinakis and his family is related to a lot of members in New Democracy. 2011-2015: New Democracy is re-elected and Olympiakos dominates the league. 2015: SYRIZA is the first Left-Radical Progressive Alliance political party that is elected in Greek Goverment and Alexis Tsipras is the new Prime Minister. In these 4 year, three teams win the league (Olympiakos 2 titles, AEK Athens 1 title (since1994), PAOK Thessaloniki 1 title (since 1984). Its the first time since the 80's that 3 different teams win the league in such a short period. ---------------- KEY FACT-------------- In 2014 ‘Noor 1’, a ship owned by Marinakis, was investigated by the Greek Coast Guard and found tons of herroine. Alexis Tsipras wants to go Marinakis to a trial for drug trafficking (check wikipedia). Marinaki's assasins kill all ship crew and witness. In this period Marinakis buys a lot of Newspapers, Political bloggs and TV Channels and start a war with Alexis Tsipras (SYRIZA Leader and Prime Minister) 2019: New Democracy is re-elected, with Kyriakos Mitsotakis as leader and Prime Minister. Marinakis and Mitsotakis are realated (Marinakis is godfather of Mitsotakis newphew). Also Marinakis is sponsor in New Democracy. 2020-Now: Olympiakos and New Democracy dominate everything in Greece and Marinakis owns the whole country under dictatorship. Tzilos got his legs broken after a match of olympiacos again against xanthi ended in a draw and he was the ref. Phone calls got leaked where it was clear to see that there are matches being fixed behind the scenes with marinakis being in the forefront, but he never got judged about it. Last but not least the whole noor 1 where a ship belonging to marinakis was investigated and 3 tons, i believe, of heroin were found on board and somehow every witness died over the next few years either through car crashes or "heart attacks", the ship magically disappeared and mobile phones containing evidence got lost alongside the ship. Despite the evidence being out there for everyone to see olympiacos fans either are refusing to face reality or are too stupid to understand it, I tend to lean toward the latter one

  • I have to say that I have really enjoyed this channel videos, especially the ones taking on more obscure issues, because it was stuff I had never heard of and always assumed that there was some basic research done. Having watched the amount of research or in this case lack of research done for this one, I doubt that anything on this channel is accurate. I think the only sources used Djibril Cisse rants and some tweets by fan newspapers from Greece. The most disturbing fact is that nowhere in the video there's any representation of what the other side says. The video mentioned more than once that noone has been found guilty and that is pretty much it. However it would be very interesting to the audience to at least present one of these cases, what were the accusations, where those accusations were based and why there were dismissed, usually in case of corruption dismissal are really funny and absurd. The rants of Djibril Cisse are considered facts and based on the controversy faced by his team during the the 2010-2011 campaign where his team was blatantly wronged in their direct clash against Olympiacos, however there is no mention of the fact that prior to that game his team was 7 points behind and a win would mean just a reduction to 4 points which are a lot for any team to cover in Greece, let alone the fact that they proceeded to lose the next games as well (although one can understand their disappointment after their unfair loss against Olympiacos). He also complained about fans and the owner mistreating him after the game which is all horrible but is not a rare occurrence for greece, for example later premier league player Kevin Mirallas was hit in the face with a heavy glass ashtray in a game where home fans were banned from attending the game. Also what Cisse does not mention is the controversies that went his way in the previous campaign 2009-2010 campaign were incidentally his team wan the championship, the most blatant of those would be the match in Salonika against rival for the title at the time PAOK. Cisse is a winner and a champion and does not like losing, and just like every other player of his caliber will bitch and moan and cry every time they lose something and this is understandable however to take his word as gospel is a misstep in my opinion. The video then goes on to talk about some issues around the name of the owner of Olympiacos, Marinakis, but mostly the Noor 1 ship which first of all has nothing to do with football and second of all the D.E.A. and Interpol are involved in this issue and have not made any allegation against him so I guess European and US authorities are also in his pocket, what I found interesting though is the fact that you bothered to check the sources of the site defending him but not the ones making the allegations. I should note that I am at no point saying that he is innocent of everything that he has been accused and I would not be surprised if he was involved in criminal activities, however in this video makes it seem like he is this mastermind controlling greek footbal with his minions. It would hurt to mention that other owners of greek clubs currently clashing with Marinakis have been proved guilty of very interesting stuff. The most awesome of this cases is one where PAOK salonika owner entered the field with a PISTOL visible in his belt to threaten the referee of the game was banned for ONLY two years from and football game but proceed to be in the stadium for the final of the greek cup later that year because the owner of the club his team was facing said it was ok. There is video proof for this. Also another owner entered the referee locker room proceeded to grab the referee by the balls and asked him to do officiate the game "better" this was written down in the referee report after the game and not in some tweet btw. Note that all the examples I used had everything to do with football many of the owners have been accused for a plethora of crimes outside football, the funniest of which would be previous Olympiacos owner Sokratis Kokkalis was accused of being a spy for the east German STAZI. My with this is that in the best case scenario for the narrative is that Marinakis is a criminal among other criminals which the video does not hint at any point. I see that the video is almost a year old and it is very unlikely that any of the creators will check this comment however in the slim chance that one does I would be very happy to provide sources for my claims.

  • As an Olympiacos fan i dont want to take anyones side for the corruption. In 2017 Aek won the league and reached Champions League group stage, the owner took the money and didnt support the team , till then AEK cannot contest Olympiakos. In 2018 similar thing with PAOK who didnt reach to Champions League . I want to point out that both teams got embarrassed in Europe, while Olympiacos was the only team contesting . In 2019 PAOK FC and Xanthi FC (Super League teams) were accused for being owned by Savvidis , the goverment changed the law in one night so that none team will get relegated in the 4th division. At the end of the case only Xanthi got relegated to the second division. I dont want to take anyones side , i know as all greeks know that this league is corrupted . All the Big 5 chairmans are criminals, but dont only point out Olympiacos. Savvidis (PAOK) -MoneyLaundring and owning two teams in the league, Melissanidis (AEK) was in jail 10 years ago, Alafouzos (Panathinaikos) stole ships from Romania .

  • Mate, as someone who watches and keeps up with Greek football (admittedly am an Olympiacos fan) I take some issue with this one. I won't defend all of Marinakis's off pitch activity - he's definitely sus in that regard, and Greek football definitely still has some issues, but it's gotten a lot better. I personally find it disrespectful to see Olympiacos in the title of this video because every big club in Greece is just as, if not more, corrupt. The Hellenic Football Federation is no longer run by someone who's "in Marinakis's pocket", and the league includes foreign (non-Greek) refs for big games (i.e., less probability of ref bias), and the day after all games, Mark Klattenburg (former Premier League and UCL ref who now works in Greece) goes over every controversial call on TV (penalty, VAR, etc) for clarity, to explain why the call was made, or admit if there was a mistake. Your comment about Olympiacos using loans as a means to sway their influence in votes is also a bit puzzling. I say this because PAOK, the second biggest club in Greece these days, LITERALLY owned another team, not in the lower leagues, but in the first division. This was Xanthi FC, who have since been relegated as a result of the point deduction they received from this offense. Literally, PAOK's owner Savvidis arranged for Xanthi to be owned by someone under his orders, and PAOK have used Xanthi to arrange transfers and loans frequently. With Xanthi having been relegated, they've since undergone some murky transfer engagement with Volos (selling Amr Warda over the summer then signing him right back in the winter for next to nothing with little negotiation). It's not rocket science that the biggest clubs loan lots of players out - it's harder for young players to get in the team, and they have more money to buy fringe players that might end up getting loaned out in the future - and it's also not rocket science that teams typically loan players out to the same place because the relationship between these teams is important (you want to be sending your player to a place where you're confident they will do well, not some random team you have no relationship with). This in my eyes is completely fair, doesn't provide an unfair benefit to a team like Olympiacos and it's very common across European football. Lastly, the comments about Olympiacos match fixing. Did they have some weird stuff going on in the 2010s? Yes. Let's not talk about that, since your title uses "are" (present tense). Have you taken a look at the table in Greece this year? Let's just say match fixing wouldn't be required to hand Olympiacos the trophy. They're clear of every other team in Greece, and if you think they're only winning games domestically because of some unfair advantage, let's talk about how they beat Arsenal last year in Europe, and played very competitively with Wolves shortly after. The team is just good... I don't know what to say. And when they haven't been good, they haven't won! PAOK won the league two years ago and AEK three years ago - for me that's rather supportive of the fact that the league isn't rigged for Olympiacos in either way. Long story short (lol surely nobody will read this), Greek football is corrupt, no doubt, and the Hellenic Football Federation is pretty awful at times (see the scheduling debacle surrounding the Greek Cup Final last year), but it's gotten better. You claim at the end of the video that it hasn't, but you also can't cite any match fixing issues since like 2012. Also, I'm rather upset you've singled out Olympiacos here. Just because Olympiacos are the biggest club in Greece means you utterly disregard PAOK literally owning another team, or the owner of PAOK charging the stadium with a gun after a game? This one could have been researched better or framed differently - all I'm going to say.

    @peterthompson2253@peterthompson22533 жыл бұрын
    • Then, based on your last sentence "This one could have been researched better or framed differently", i have to say that it's you that should do a better research before praising your beloved football team for being the best(est) all over the world. Do you think it's a coincidence that 90% of the greek football teams are against Olympiacos? That's a retorical question. Then, about what i mentioned for the research that you should have done before, let me tell you the following: 1) When Olympiacos loses a game (or even draw), everything and everyone in Greek football is guilty and suspicious (based on what Olympiacos says). When Olympiacos wins, then everything is fantastic in greek football. 2) Members of staff of Olympiacos team are convicted for beating up referees, politicians, journalists, football players and so on. Some of them are also convicted for dealing drugs. 3) Olympiacos has been buying players for Aris FC and AEL or even sending players in loan to both teams. That's a truth that nobody has the guts to admit it. The owner of Aris has stated the following: "I am an Olympiacos fan since i was a child!". Really? Just imagine the owner of Liverpool saying "I'm a ManCity fan since i was a child!". I suppose you can imagine and see the big difference. On the other hand, AEL's owner said that he's a the main legal advisor on Marinaki's companies. 4) PAOK has been accused by Olympiacos that PAOK's owner owns another team. Then, FFA accused PAOK for owning another team (without having real evidence about that) and then PAOK went to CAS to prove his innocence. Then, CAS send the case back to FFA and DEMANDED from the federation to go in another trial at which they will examine the details of the indictment. Just FYI, PAOK has been proved to be INNOCENT for this case (the trial decision has been taken a few days ago) I could write more reasons that Olympiacos is the only team in Greece that every football fan literally hates. Olympiacos is the team that won't let a team like Leicester to win the championship. Because Olympiacos wants to win everything and, most of the time, illegally. Greek football has been really good that past 4-5 years, when every year a different team won the championship. Now we're back in the era where Olympiacos doesn't want any other team to win the championship or even win a single game. Before writing any b***it about that team, try to do a better research about your beloved Olympiacos and make sure that your writings are based on real events and not just your love for your team.

      @kotsen1991@kotsen19913 жыл бұрын
    • @@kotsen1991 1) This is nonsensical. The Greek press says a lot of stupid shit to be fair, but the games that we have drawn this year, we deserve to. No suspicion on my part - I understand when we play poorly. 2) Not defending any off field stuff Marinaki or other officials have done. Other Greek teams are much worse (Alexis Kougias owner of AEL super corrupt lawyer for example). Do u have any recent examples of this? Cause it sounds like you don't 3) Bro what have Oly done there that's illegal. Signed AEL's goalkeeper to be their third choice GK?! LMAOO yeah such an unfair advantage. Dude as I said every team builds relationships with smaller clubs to loan their players there. Oly haven't bought a single big player from Aris or Larisa recently - we tried to buy Pinakas and Kougias didn't let us!! If we really did have the other teams in our pockets Pinakas would be in red and white by now and you know that. So stop it with those dead arguments while PAOK bring Warda back from their feeder club Volos with no negotiation despite Volos competing for 6th in the league at the time. 4) OK then.. Oly is also innocent of everything you're accusing them of. The argument works both ways... if PAOK are innocent then so are Oly. If you can acknowledge the rulings aren't always correct (ie PAOK legit owned Xanthi and it was quite clear) then we can talk about Oly corruption (I believe a while back Oly did get away with shit because the federation does a poor job) 5) You said "Olympiacos wants to win everything". No shit. That's how football works. Fans of small clubs like PAOK who bottle in Europe wouldn't understand that though so I get it. The reason Greek league is poor is not because of Olympiacos. It's because PAOK and AEK do a poor job in Europe and Pao are still reeling from the debt and all that stuff a while ago (not clearing Oly there but I hope Pao get back to being competitive and think they will in enough time). If other teams in Greece weren't literally morons (PAOK selling all their players right before Champions League qualifier games, AEK hiring one shitty manager after another, etc) then the UEFA coefficient would go up and Greek football would benefit as a whole. I'd love to see those other teams do better and not choke everything away in Europe (PAOK losing to fucking Omonoia like come on man) but that's not Olympiacos's problem. We beat Arsenal in Europe. No match fixing there. Levels to this game man you just have to understand that. People like you are just salty man and you have to understand that. In years when PAOK and AEK won the league, we didn't complain and whine about corruption or match fixing. We made smart transfers hired a good manager and won games. Obviously we have more resources financially than the other Greek teams but we outplay European sides with double the budget of Olympiacos! When you actually want to win every game, something other Greek fans wouldn't understand, that's how it works, end of story.

And both AEK and PAO used to go to the Champions league during the early 00's, since we sometimes even had 3 team in the group stages. So that's not an excuse. AEK also got money from European Football, as did Panathinaikos. The big change came after 2008, when fewer greek team got in the Champions League. So also not an excuse. As for AEK being relegated, that has nothing to do with Olympiakos. AEK had financial debt that they never repaid. Instead the current-president collaborated with Original-21 to storm into the stadium, so that the team would get relegated in the 3rd division and the debt would be erased. He then "bought" AEK for free, and paid no debt whatsoever. That's millions of euros that now have to come from my and your pocket through taxes. As for Panathinaikos, they kicked out their old president, and cheered for the Pateras-Vgenopoulos consortium that took over. These guys were absolute mafiozos, they spent money they didn't have, overpaid players and coaches, and then left the club completely in debt. Again, not Olympiakos' fault. Panathinaikos fans ruined their own club, just like they also did in basketball. So please, stop accusing Olympiakos for everything. I know you have defended Ligue 1 in the past , but only 1 UCL for French clubs is really underwhelming for a country like France . Especially when you consider that Dutch clubs have won 6 UCL ' s and Portuguese clubs have won 4 UCLs

  • I am a young football fan and Olympiakos fan, but as most things here in Greece the football is very corrupt which is why except for mainly olympiakos european matches my main football focus is the premier league , here's hoping I can watch premier league games live on stadiums sometime in the future. However , the situation is complex , it's certainly not the big bad Olympiakos and Marinakis ruining everything for the other innocent teams . See Paok - Xanthi multi ownership that would result in relegation if the government didn't change the laws overnight after it was revealed. The whole thing is still pending it's very stupid honestly if you see all the details. See the cup quarterfinal draw the other day which was held behind closed doors , an olympiakos official "predicted" with much certainty the draw the previous day which would pair Paok and Aek with the 2 easiest teams , and Olympiakos with Aris , their 2 biggest rivals at the moment against one another. From all the things I've heard the previous Olympiakos owner , Sokratis Kokkalis was way more shady that Marinakis. The only certain thing in this mess is that Pedro Martins ( the coach) is a very talented one that is doing an amazing job even when there are big setbacks

    • @@pgps02 even if you take the best team in Africa El Ahly from Egypt and put it into La Liga or lets say Ligue 1 as it is, value wise the team value would be dead last even if you would double their current value of transfermarkt that is 25mil. Their behavior standing wise in the league would be from 50mil-100mil result.. 75% they would end up on last 5 spots 16-20 of the league, 20% 11-15 and I would give them less than 5% for a place 10 or a little bit higher(and that is for France that is a bit tighter league than Spanish, for Spanish I think they would not have chances to be in the top 10 places at all) For an Asian club it would be even worse since to avoid last place on a big 5 league is almost impossible the way they play.

    • @@pgps02 the valuation is relative, but is not irrelevant also and double valuation it is generous. They are good for their country, but if they were as good as you say better than most French teams their players would sell in Europe like hot cakes.. Either European clubs are completely blind and stupid or they are not as good as you want to believe. For their country they are the best and for Africa they are the best team it has but.. Their team would not win the league even of Greece they would be in competition for 2-4 position and even end up lower that 6th position and I am talking about Greece. For France I don't see them having a better team than Lens, Saint Etienne, Bordeaux etc so that puts them in a place that they may compete with teams like Angers, Lorient, Nimes, Reims, Brest and that is only because those teams do not have the tradition and the psychology of a winner. But even Angers got players like Boufal for example from Premier League that was a huge talent and he is tested in Europe.. Just because they are not tested in Europe doesn't mean for people that watch football that we are blind to their capabilities For example Red Star and Partisan are also amazing in Serbia and are stronger than El Ahly but still if they would compete this year on top five those percentages that I wrote would also apply to them with maybe less chances to relegate

    • @@pgps02 10-0 is not on the map in such competitions.. just from the score of Bayern vs El Ahly doesn't give you their stand point. Italy won Malta 1-0 on both their games. Does that mean Malta is just inches away from winning the world cup? Does that mean that if Malta makes a club in Italy they could stand on Serie A? I am telling you that they would not stand even on Serie C but they managed to lose only 1-0. first of all the motivation for El Ahly is on a all time high in such games, and Bayern is below mediocre more like a demonstration game For a couple of games you can keep focus and give more than what you have and play super tight defense and have excitement for what you do cause it is a one in a lifetime for most players of the team. But a championship is not 3 or 4 games, it is week in week out with 38 weeks with games.. Once focus is lost or Paris Saint Germain finds them on a bad night and some 6-1 comes and then Monaco comes and makes a 3-0, confidence starts to drop, problems rise to the top and it becomes hard to recover especially to a team that doesn't have top notch players. As for the players if they were good they would go to Europe, everything you say is just excuses! You even said it yourself, their age is the problem and why is age a problem? Because they are not ready to play immediately to Europe, because if they were on level and ready to play in age 23-24 they would be crazy from Bordeaux and Auxerre to not buy 3 and 4 not expensive players. They are cheaper than European players and Latin American so if they are good they would have bought them every year by the dozens. Actually El Ahly does a simple trick the last few years, they buy African players that are not ready to play in europe and they give them a chance That should tell you a lot on where they stand on talent pool El Ahly is behind teams like Ajax, Salzburg, Olympiakos by a mile And may be closer but still behind teams like Red Star, Sparta Prague, Ludogorec etc I believe they would probably enter Europa League if Egypt was in Uefa and maybe once every three years would enter a team in the group stage of Champions League and that is as much as I would see them go in Europe. For the five leagues they are not part of so it is hard to put a meter on the last teams of any of those leagues

  • Apart from anything else and far from the maddening voices of supporters and opponents of Olympiacos ,this is what I have to say : football in Greece ,just like everything else is corrupt and the fact that there is impunity for just about any kind of crime ,even minor ones ,intensifies that. I am an Olympiacos fan who is happy to see his club amass one league title after another but I am also not at all comfortable with 21 league titles in 25 years. Of course the vast majority of these championships was merited if you look at the roster if the club throughout these 25 years and compare it to its opponents ' ,combined with the fact that the club is run by very capable hands. Nevertheless ,21 titles in 25 years are way too many. Of course Mr.Marinakis' involvement (or not) in.other criminal activities does not pertain to Olympiacos and should not be investigated in conjunction with the club's possible involvement in scandal. For me ,however, the biggest scandal is how Olympiacos' two biggest adversaries, Panathinaikos and AEK came to be paupers during this period and completely unable to compete with Olympiacos. That is a matter worth investigating.
