  • Element X, the reason it runs slower when you turn up your render distance with smaller blocks is because Minecraft doesn't usually render the sides of blocks that are not visible to the player. Since the sides are visible to the player, they are rendered therefore causing more lag. And the fact that you turned up your render distance makes it worse because there is more for the game to render. (I think so at least.)

    • It's called z-fighting because two overlapping triangles are competing for the same position in the z-buffer, which decides what gets drawn first. Depending on the angle of the camera, and depending on the camera near and far rendering planes, the limited precision of floating point numbers may give close enough triangles have two identical z-buffer values, at which point, the pizel that gets drawn is whichever was first on the rendering pipeline.
