Your tattoo your story. Don’t let anyone modify you story. As I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to appreciate other people tattoos nice or ugly. There is always a cool story in regards to where you were in your life during that tattoo.

My viewpoint is the same. Honestly it’s so hard today to do anything that’s super original and different even when adding it up with other things. I always just say to try your best going in to the tattoo appointment and just to work with your artist. You’ll still come out probably with something similar or has been done before but you’ll know in yournheart you tried to be different 👊🏼
Man everything is done before but there is a difference between a cool design that few people have our a lion that you will literally see 10 times a day on different people

I got a rose as a coverup. It was the easiest way to cover a nautical star I got at 18. I ended up working it into a half sleeve of one of my reptiles. We incorperated monstera leaves, a lily, the rose, and a few other flowers. Its cliché but I love it!

The same technique is used in painting I think called NMM (non metallic metal) just meaning non metallic paints or in tattoos inks are used. It's all about really good understanding of highlights and shadows.

Ive done more than 100 designs in my years... Most pf what you have mentioned ive done multiple times already. Mostly lions, skulls, clocks, and forest sleeves. What i was waiting for for you to mention was some Egyptian mythology. Atleast for me i had multiple of clients who asked for Anubis. Sleeve anubis, chest anubis, leg anubis, you name it...
The only tattoo I have from that list is the tribal tattoo. My first tattoo was a tribal phoenix/dragon. I got it to symbolize strength and rising again from the ashes. It was actually a momentary decision, but it has become a very important symbol and reminder to me.
My top 3 overdone are: • Lions • Pocket watches / clocks • Roses
8/10 people could have the tattoo but you could get it and it would still be unique because the meaning of tattoo has different significance to every other person. I wanted a rising phoenix tattooed on my ribs but people kept calling it basic n mainstream. I have watched sm videos of tattoo artists calling it too overrated. The thing is I DONT CARE it is. I have fought with severe depression n anxiety for past few year and have almost ended it on multiple occasions but I survived. I dug my finger nails down, bit down, kept going day by day n survived. So I really wanted a rising phoenix as a reminder of that and my courage that kept me alive. It was like being born again from the ashes. To me it is very special. To go to an artist with such a tattoo and have them call it cliche is really not okay.
Finally. Someone said something relevant. Implied meaning as the inevitable secondary result of being tattooed. Now that you got it, and have to live with it, might as well apply some meaning to it. Bravo!
lol, At 48 I just got my first tatoo, an infinity symbol with a Rainbow. To be fair, I've wanted it for about 40 years and I freely acknowledge its super common, I just wanted it anyway :)

I got lotus flowers tattooed over my scars as a symbol of overcoming depression. There’s a a saying that goes lotus flowers grow from dirt and bloom into a beautiful flower. This moved me so much so i decided to get it. Now tho idk if i should cover it
I'm always up for input from people about my ink when I'm considering my next one, but - ultimately, I don't care what anyone else has. Everything I get means something to me, & every one is always done custom so it's unique for me.
Basically dont get them because he already has them.
Another thing is…when it comes to over done tattoos, many attach a negative connotation to it. Sure, the imagery is overdone, but the artist and technical ability of said artist can separate yours from the average. Take for example, your sleeves. I’ve seen many poseidons, even have one myself. People are still wowed by it because the quality is incomparable to someone who did not do their research. Same thing with yours, your quality of work is top notch so of course it still breaks necks. If anyone is worried about people not being impressed by your sleeve because it’s “overdone” and the imagery is popular, don’t be. Just go to an amazing artist and you will still get compliments and looks. Obviously tattoos are for yourself, but others opinions definitely can affect your mindset, so if that’s what you’re worried about just find a really strong artist who specializes in the specific style and pay whatever they ask! These are popular for a reason, they look great when properly executed. It’s like the shape of t shirts, pants and socks. They all are made to fit, why fix it if it ain’t broke

Yeah I know they're over done but...; 1. Roses = my favorite flower & I have a specific idea in mind cuz it has 3 meanings to me 2. Pocket watch = I love them compared to a regular watch. I own about 3 or 4. I want one as a tattoo but I want to make it interesting 3. Cross = I am a Christian & again I have a specific design in mind to make it unique to me 4. Snakes = my favorite reptile 5. Wolves = just love the animal & wolf used to be an old nickname plus my coworkers call me Big B. So back off before I huff & puff 6. Tribal = my first was tribal but I had the suits from playing cards added in cuz it looked better that way. Also I'd love some Polynesian styled work cuz I respect & love the tradition of tattooing 7. Skulls = yeah ok can be "edgy" but like everything else make it my own & I'm gonna wear that shit happily
As a musican the first tattoo I ever got was a treble cleft design based on a water colour painting I did. Years later playing in bars and street performing I'd come to realize so many musicians also had treble cleft tattoos and music notes. Way more common than I thought
I actually designed a butterfly tattoo for my family member, but she's getting it because her sister loves butterflies, and her sister got a dragonfly to represent her. And her sister got a vine of flowers down her spine in remembrance of her best friend, who passed away right after graduation, and loved those flowers. One tattoo that's definitely popular: dragons. Mostly Chinese/water dragons. Coming from a girl who has a big water dragon tattoo. I also have a skull that's in the same style as the game Hollow Knight. And it's cracked with a little ghost coming out of it. Don't care that half my tattoos are cliché. I love them dearly x)

I almost got #10 (the tree) but only because I couldn't find an artist who'd do geometrics. But fortunately after a vacation break a new tattoo shop opened with exactly that what I was looking for. Now I have an awesome geometric + mandala dotwork (= many hours) full sleeve that I really seldom see elsewhere 😅 (I also got wings all over my upper back and shoulders, is that a nono too?)

Lol. I just got my first tattoo 2 days ago and it features both a butterfly and a rose. But, I'm a thyroid cancer survivor and my tattoo is designed to celebrate that. The butterfly is used to symbolize the thyroid as the gland itself is shaped like a butterfly. The rose represents my Oma who passed and my tattoo also includes cornflowers for my late mother and apple blossoms for my Opa. So, while it might have elements that are overdone, it's very personal to me and I love it! No ragrets.😆🥰

I have some flowers but they are nicely mixed in with with a Halloween theme. I also have a tribal wolf and then further down a realistic wolf with the Norse Vegvisvir. And the whole sleeve is wolf themed with the theme being faith family and friends.

I have a cross of the word faith, the h goes into a branch with four birds on it (representing my four kids), the word First from the song by Lauren Daigle which means to put God First, and a semicolon with a side butterfly wing (; for suicide awareness and butterfly wing to represent my daughters second chance at life). I’m getting my arm sleeve done in a month, and I’m thinking that I want to honor the biggest influences in my life that’s molded and shaped me into who I am today. But I’m stuck.. I’m visualizing a very detailed, 3D ish sleeve that’s going to be a realistic black n grey with the theme described above. Legendary rock bands, Harley-Davidsons/muscle cars, family & friends, big dreams and certain powerful sayings is on my list this far. But as I said, I’m stuck and don’t know how to move forward.. Any specific suggestions, tips and tricks or specific yt-videos that you’d be willing to share that touches this matter? Forever thankful!!

Out of the ones you mentioned I only have a wolf tattoo, but it is a small and simple one. I'm a little surprised that u didn't mention dragons and over the years I see a lot of them on people, male, female, and even nb. I eventually want to get a dragon tattoo myself.

My first tat I got was a bull skull with flowers. I have it on my left forearm. My next tat I'm getting is going to be a half flower sleeve with a skull somewhere in it. :)
I knew some of mine where gonna be on this list, but I still love them. I have a large owl on my shoulder in a stack of books, due to not only my love of owls but also being a librarian, I am also plan on getting a wolf to match with roses to represent my father and mother.
Currently planning my first tattoo. Although I’m not sure I agree with the phrase “overdone”. I feel like classic is a better phrasing. Most of these are nature or animals, representing classic natural symbology of the earth. I guess I don’t get how those can be “overdone”

I’ve got 4 AT themed flash tattoos. Similar to the pocket watch, I’ve got a hiking style compass with a rose and a flower around it. It was parried up with a same style backpack and camping lantern. There is also an owl in the mix too.
That's what I love about AT. it's a timeless classic style.. the soaring eagle, or clipper ship, or gypsie head were dope 75 years ago and are still dope now.

Tattoo concepts have always been cyclical but as you say there are constants. Honestly I dont care what people want as every tattoo I do is an opportunity to baby step a new technique and further hone my skills. Realistic skulls are timeless and classy if done well especially when combined with complimentary elements like filigree as one example, the hard and soft contrast values and subtle highlights, light sources and colours and limitless variations of subtle or drastic 'aging', definitely my favorite concept to do, realistic skulls are a meditative session (for me at least 😅) One simply has to reference some classic Itallian sculpture to realize the endless potential of a classic and beautiful skull tattoo, theyre a truly versatile element, almost anything works.
I want a wolf and a snake eventually but definitely would rather a unique take on the designs that isn’t common. Always prefer when an artist makes a tattoo with their own twist that isn’t a copy of other work.
The Greek god ones are so nice! Been thinking about getting Zeus or Poseidon and I think I’ll do it after watching this.

While I don’t know why other people get lion tattoos, I’ve seen cuz there a Leo or cuz it represents them. I knew I wanted a lion tattoo since I was a kid, always been my favorite animal and I used to tell my gpa when we die we will come back as them! So lion tattoo was coming either way for me popular or not!

LOL It's a purple one that has two plumeria next to it and was a cover up of a small ladybug that slowly turned into a black blob. Thanks for the video. I am looking to get my first tattoo but everything I think of is on the overdone lists. :) A Compass. A Lion with crown and a Bible verse (got lots covered there). It's difficult because what I think I want is based on internet searches, so the same sort of stuff comes up, but I am not confident enough to tell an artist what I want and to give total freedom to do something really different. Not sure if you've gotten your first tattoo done, but go around to different shops and look at their portfolios. Find someone who has work that you love. Soon as you do, definitely has sit down with that artist and let them know what you're thinking. They will definitely be more than happy to work with ya
I have rose tattoos but theyre used as filler tattoos on my religous sleeve. Never gone to a tattoo shop and asked for a rose, just had them do them as part of whatever piece I was getting

I just got a butterfly tattoo with Lady Gaga's sexual assault survivor symbol as the bodice. I love it because it's a beautiful, creative twist on the original tattoo and it looks awesome. I also like that people assume it's basic because they typically don't ask me about the meaning, so I have an easy time only telling people I trust what it represents.

Its gonna hurt but if you sit well and get the tattoo in one sitting, your artist will like you. Also understand that they are the artist, so he cannot read your mind, be prepared to make compromises.

I did a stick and poke rose as my first tattoo. Yes ik stick and pokes are risky I was 16 and dumb but i actually used it to include a semi colon instead of a leave on my rose

This video is the reason I never understood why people get tattoos. People say they get tattoos to express their individuality, but everyone has the same few tattoos. I can count on one hand how many unique tattoos that I have seen. Tattoos are at the point of It being like a woman saying she wears bike shorts to express herself when everyone and their grandma wears bike shorts. It's at the point of people without tattoos being the unique ones lol.
guilty! i have three rose tattoos (two are small and used as eyes for a lady head), a ton of flowers/plants, an owl, a skull, and a heart wreath (with flowers). I do want a wolf tattoo but I'm still deciding how I want to make it unique :)
I do have a flower but none you mentioned. I have a red poppy. I do have butterflies. Its 3 solid black butterflies for my 3 kids and 1 just the outline for the 1 i lost.

I don't have any of those tattoos mentioned, but a feature of my full back piece does have a lettered cross. The cross isn't the main focus of the tattoo.
I appreciate that this video isn’t even knocking popular tattoos. It’s just stating the obvious. I have a flower forearm tattoo with a woman holding a baby(for my son). My flowers are asters and morning glories but I definitely want a lotus on my ankle too. Don’t even care that it’s popular. Some of the popular tattoos are popular for a reason. They tattoo well, are low in being regretted, and just have great meaning.
If i see a guy with a roaring lion/tiger i always get triggered, especially if he's a 150 lbs stick.

I have a Polynesian on my lower leg. Was hanging out in Hawaii and heavily tattooed locals explained the meaning behind the various ones on their body. Impressed. High honor to have one.
I always thought it was more cultural, like that style of Polynesian tribal marks were solely for that group

I'm 15 and one day I would live to get a cross tattoo on my back, despite it being overdone. I also really like the lion and statues as well.

I got my first tattoo about a year ago. It's a wolf on my bicep (yes, it is because of the "lone wolf" mantra) and I didn't know anything about tattoos at the time, so I googled "tribal wolf sketch." It's now on my bicep and it's hard to work around. The worst part is, I don't want to remove it because it was my first tattoo and it holds sentimental value.
I recently moved to Cambodia and have discovered the power of Sak Yant tattoo. I presently have 13 Sak Yant tattoo and now I'm starting to collect them. Very Very cool and quite the story behind them. Dig it! 😎👍
I wanted a blush pink rose tattoo simply because of what that color of rose symbolizes. And a blue morpho butterfly because ever since I was a child they were my favorite of the butterflies.

Honestly the most basic tattoos can be the best if done well. I my first 2 tats were flowers and i felt basic but my artist said we all gotta get our flower fix 😂 then we get cool funky shit. I love my tats to death

I just got my first tattoo on my forearm the side where my palm faces. It says “faith” and the “h” extends out into a branch with a bird perched on it. I feel like I knew what I wanted to add on until I watch this video lol. On the other side of my forearm with the back of my hand, I wanted a broken face being shattered with floral sprouting underneath. I seen some done with butterflies but I think I prefer the black and grey floral look
I literally just got a pocket watch tattoo and I’ve never seen anyone in my life have one. 🤣 Mine is about a moral story about your value as a person and the pocket watch was used as analogy in the story.

So I’ve seen something in the martial arts community for decades now (especially with Brazilian jiujitsu) where people will join a new school, practice for a few months then BAM they get the academy logo, or boxing gloves, or karate written in kanji, or taekwondo logo tatted on themselves, then quit after a year of training.
OK, you got me; the one tattoo I had considered getting for a while was a Celtic owl, which I guess would also be considered tribal. Probably kinda like Rachel Roth's tramp stamp in the Teen Titans comics. I still don't have any ink on my flesh, but if I were to get any tattoo in the foreseeable future, it would probably be on top of the ORIF scar in my arm and a representation of the bone when it was broken and the hardware that's still in there.
