    • Do you mean transparent tunnels? that would be awesome

      @levinche@levinche Жыл бұрын
    • I like the idea too! Either transparent with rounded profile, or the sections with aircraft like small windows, i think the round ones with more glass would look more modern. I don't know if this type of parts are still available, but perhaps adding in a system of thermo well tunnel system which extracts heat from below the surface of the moon would do. (Not as easy as on earth, but i think i think it would work in theory on the moon as well, however one probebly had to drill a lot deeper or use some kind of future thermonucler drilling method in order to achive that since the moon does no longer hawe any volcanic activity, but it still has a molten core as the Earth.)

      @Govvy@Govvy11 ай бұрын

The lighting problem is what originally brought the idea into my mind, as I've done something similar to create "lights" inside a starship model I use to shoot miniature photos, but with the moon base skylights could also add a really nice element to the surface of the build.

    • Yep, I mentioned this in another comment too. You want to keep the suits in the airlock cause they'd get caked in dust.

      @WasatchWind@WasatchWind Жыл бұрын
  • Definitely have paths / walkways. Dust on the moon is a HUGE problem so having paths would reduce the dust issue. Plus it would make the base look more developed. I do love the nod to the old Lego Space. I could see the Galaxy Explorer touching down on that landing platform. I have a soft spot in my heart for old Lego Space. I cheered when Benny was able to finally build his spaceship (spaceship SPACESHIP!!!) in the Lego Movie.

    • Yes, It would look better with paths

      @Prussian_Forever@Prussian_Forever Жыл бұрын
    • Yes, you cannot overestimate the dust problem on the Moon. And hence this is why you need a dressing room between the airlock and the lab! (also, it seems that the lab is not pressurised: the plants are under glass, the guys walk with the astronaut suit on... what is the airlock for, then?)

      @levinche@levinche Жыл бұрын
    • @@levinche also, there's water for use by the astronauts as well as the plants, but no way for the astronauts to draw that water (no faucets, showers, external pipes to move it to another facility where those things might be present). So unless that stuffs where the open wall of the base is, we've got some very smelly astronauts (also some very contaminated experiments as they can't easily clean their hands).

      @theapexsurvivor9538@theapexsurvivor9538 Жыл бұрын
    • And more than just lunar dust, you also have to consider that uneven surfaces aren't good for moving across quickly, and may result in sprains and other injuries during a prolonged stay. Suits mitigate that a little, but anyone doing construction or engineering knows that PPE is not your first line of defence. Roofed or pressurized walkways with guide rails are a must in this kind of environment.

      @theapexsurvivor9538@theapexsurvivor9538 Жыл бұрын
    • Do not add the pathways. The resources are scarce, and everything must be efficient, necessary, almost spartan. Nobody would build them. It would be a waste of resources and time.

  • I think it makes sense to have capsules with plants on the surface aswell. It would then act as different stages of the experiments; stage 1 - microscopic observations and trials, stage 2 - growing the seeds and saplings inside the lab, stage 3 - see if they survive on the surface. By this logic you could also add "failures" where there are capsules with dead plants inside on the surface, and astronauts could be transporting capsules, or capsule parts, across the surface. I just think the surface capsule idea have a lot of potential for the overall story, plus like you said, it adds contrast. Keep up the good work! :)

  • I know I'm speaking a bit late, but I think the paths make sense - moon rocks and moon dust is very sharp, because there's no wind or rain to smooth it down, so you'd want to do everything you can to reduce how much dust you bring in by accident. I also like the idea of the classic space sets being in-base suits intended for protecting against unplanned decompression, while the surface suits are proper, fully prepared modern suits.

  • Some notes from someone who somewhat works in the space industry (building a satellite): - I wouldn't put the plants on the surface because of the radiation dose they would receive. That's why I really appreciate the underground part of the base, as it's by far the most realistic. Regolith works great for radiation shielding. - As far as color and surface decorations go, I would recommend a lot of infrastructure like pipes and tanks you already have. Possibly discarded crates (since it's a lot easier to just leave them on the lunar surface than to launch back up)?. They could be color coded for different contents like water, food, fuel, oxygen, waste, etc. Also, if you look at the Apollo landing sites, there is a ton of stuff laying around. Most of it was junk, but a lot of it was science experiments (many of which looked like junk, tbh). I think having a bunch of random science experiments would be a fun build, and it would fit the science and discovery vibe that comes with space exploration. - The paths are a better idea than you may think. Lunar regolith is basically tiny shards of glass, so any amount of time you can avoid walking on it is a good thing. One thing to note: lunar regolith getting into bases isn't great, but I don't think the solutions would fit well with the great retro aesthetics. - Bonus: an alternate way of launching things that works REALLY well on the Moon is the railgun technique (which I think could be a fantastic and fun build).

Secondly, it gives me the idea of a slightly more advanced "society", where all the basics have already been laied out and more care is given to transport resources. • it makes sense to use grating panels from common outside destinations because moon dust will be such a huge problem with any moon colony. if you could avoid walking on the regolith say when you go from the pad to the base, you dont have to bring as much dust into the vehicle/base. perhaps take clear plates and install gratings on top of them with perhaps a border of the same color. perhaps with some footings to raise it above the lunar ground.

  • I think a slightly raised, grated walkway between the landing pad and other structures (like the underground lab) would absolutely make sense. Moon dust/topsoil (regolith) is very fine and loose, so having a way to avoid having to interact with it constantly, while transferring cargo on foot or by cart across the permanent settlement of the base would be _highly_ beneficial.

  • As others have mentioned, Lunar Regolith is a big issue on the moon. Due to the lack of flowing water to smooth each particle, it's actually extremely sharp, which can damage space suits or equipment (Apollo astronauts actually suffered from scratched-up visors) or be a serious health issue to get on you or especially breathe. It is also electrically charged, sticking to almost everything it comes into contact with (Like a balloon to your hair), meaning it gets everywhere. Not only would walkways tie the moon base together, it's also likely a quite realistic solution that would be used. I'd also like to suggest (If you don't already have plans for all the base sections) building an ice mining/refining station. Not only can ice provide water, but it can also give oxygen and hydrogen for rocket fuel!

Thus you could imagine that it's experimenting with how vegetation handles the radiation, and that it's getting air piped in from the base. Also, in the airlock if you have the space, you might want to add a suit storage area. • To be honest, the metal paths on the surface make sense, because you probably don't want to be dragging too much moon dust inside the base. You want to be focusing on experiments, not cleaning all the time. This is especially the case when in moon gravity, where simply walking would kick up so much of it in the vacuum, meaning the entire space suit could be covered in it. While cleanliness may not sound all that important at first, remember vacuums are dangerous, so whether or not a space suit could readily achieve an air-tight seal on demand could be the difference between life and death, so making sure as little dust as possible gets between the suit seals is very important. So yes, keep the metal path, although you make want to switch it to metal grills, and maybe use hinge pieces underneath to make them adhere to the terrain more naturally. Either that, or make them even more dedicated slightly-elevated paths complete with railing and steps. They run a very sterile operation, you see, and perhaps path quality may also reflect the amount of foot traffic a location gets. For example, a path to maintain solar panels might be more primitive, with metal grates on the ground; whereas the paths to the landing pad, the plants, and other station elements would be slightly elevated.

  • Suggestion: do the path in a lighter colour (light bley would work), but use a contrasting edge tile to seperate it from the lunar surface. The astronauts would likely use the lunar soil to make concrete, so having it the same colour makes sense in that regard. • You can use brownish colors, the moon is a mix of colors: brown and gray. GOOD MOC btw

  • What Ithink is best for walkways is a solution used in the arctic irl: trail marker poles with lights on them and cables between, as a guide without a physical trail.

  • I've found subsistence farming interesting, particularly in systems that use aquatic life to filter the water, while processed wastewater hydrates the plants for food. If the underground lab were ever expanded with modules, or if you added an above-ground facility for agriculture and water treatment (as astronauts would probably be housed underground to avoid radiation) itd be amazing to see the colony expanded! I always like the concept of a space habitation including an area with very bright light, and plants growing; not only necessary for food but also for a psychological reminder of earth

  • I'm sure LEGO people would NOT have the funds to build roads on the moon, BUT As in the forest when hiking, I'm sure the moon base would have some kind of beaten paths that can be easily distinguished from the rest of the moon surface. That is my 2cents.

  • I have a suggestion... For the water storage room, I would find a submarine-style watertight hatch. Water would oxidize metal and once in a while it has to be maintained to ensure there's no leaks - especially considering how much it costs for water to be transported to the base.

  • Could you put skylights in the plate above the underground base? It would provide natural lighting for the plants, and maybe make it easier to see inside. A glass "dome" above the plant room could look interesting on the surface!

  • I think the pathways look great, breaks up the moon surface and allows you to get more contrast / fun details! You can incorporate different stations along the way, more satellites, a rover docking station, etc.

  • The walkways outside makes perfect sense as the lunar regolith does a lot of damage to electronics, and the human body. it also have a tendency to stick to anything,

  • the pathways would be nice, even if not really fabricated ones then trails of darker moonrock or even a couple beacons tied together with a rope so astronauts can follow them easier in the dark

  • if you want to add color to the surface you can use color cadings for specific structures. Like have a research part that has blue in the walls, a vegetation thats has green, an garage that has red. also makes it easier for future visitors to see what is what.

  • In a certain TV show, one important aspect is finding ice in permanently shadowed craters (so like, crevices/small caverns). Since you are already having elevated terrain, you could probably make a slightly more elevated crater with crevices on the inside where they can maybe find ice (which would be useful for a permanent presence on the moon)

  • Paths are a good idea i would advise maybe doing a manhole type access on top of the waterstorage for "maintenance" since it would nicely tie the surface to the underground and give you another option add some features, maybe a pipe or something to resupply.

  • I would raise the water level a lot, so it would look more like a reservoir instead of a flooded room.

    @MarcSelman@MarcSelman6 ай бұрын
  • Paths would look great as an elevated grating in my opinion, and then you could possibly have piping or wires running underneath. It’d also be cool to see some geological surveillance equipment on the surface, or some form of cargo to make the environment more “lived in”

  • It might also be a cool idea to add bars/railing sticking out of the walls, for both realism and for a pop of color and texture!! If you look in the ISS interior, they have bright, easy to see blue bars that are designed for the astronauts to push off, to stabilize, or to hook things on to. Plus there could be some better opportunities to have the minifigs look like they're a little more weightless, since we are on the moon after all. Otherwise I'm really happy to see the manmade buildings start to take shape!!

  • I think having paths is a reasonable idea. The moon’s “dirt” is so physically corrosive to astronauts space suits that it is likely paths are a good idea. Also I think you should have skylights in the underground lab. This will give some relief to the large swath of gray brick above and also give a visual cue that the underground lab exists
