This week I show you how I built this custom floating bed and headboard. This is one my favorite DIY projects and I am so amazed by the end result. I added LEDs to make the floating effect even cooler! The bedroom makeover is really coming together, and we only have a few more projects left before the room is complete!

  • For DYI and workshop enthusiasts where saws and drills roaring all the time, few claps should be totally fine. I was just wondering how this design could be turned into less permanently nailed build, an assembled one that can be moved easily. Great content!

  • I enjoyed your video. I never thought of using the motion sensor on the led lights. Pure genius. As a contractor I can find a hundred things I would change on every build video. In this case there are only 2. 1. A mistake I made in a bed build is you should have recessed the slats approximately 3/4" and placed 1/4" luan, MDF, Ply (no matter) or the mattress will begin to fail and you will feel every slat. 2. The top trim boards should be under sized by 1/2" to 3/4" in length and width. These two things force the mattress down 1/2" which gives a neater appearance in the corners and prevents the mattress from shifting.

  • For the headboard I found the standard Ghost Wood boards sold at Home Depot in-store. They’re like $13-21 a Board depending on size. Worth it. I also used pocket holes to hold everything together, including the 2x4 top edging. Other than that, I followed your plans and it turned out great. Made my wife happy. Those lights work great too. Bought a second set for beneath our kitchen cabinets. Total project cost was right around $345 in supplies. Free labor…me.

  • I made one like that in '82 and still use it however I discovered the " Torsion Box " by Ian Kirby, Fine Woodworking, '82. Its basically a box consisting of a " honeycomb " type network of 1/4 " plywood covered by two sheets of 1/4 " plywood. It's like an airplane wing, very light and very resistant to twisting ( torsion ). It's important to rip all the pieces ( sides and " honey comb " at the same width without changing the fence. I made one for my table saw runoff table 20 yrs ago and it's still doing great. Nice job on yours though.

    @Rainman270@Rainman270 Жыл бұрын
    • Yeah, I have built many torsion boxes before. For this bed it wasn't needed as the structure was already strong enough and there won't be much twisting forces applied to it. Thanks for watching!

  • Great job I used this to make a Floating bed it cam out Spectacular!! One *Note, your Inner/ outer dimensions for your cap are set for a 2x6, however you made the decision to go 2x4 won’t get a 45 degree cut with the given dimensions it’s not hard to figure out just watch your cuts! Amazing video Thank you!

    @Thebros-uf3vk@Thebros-uf3vk9 ай бұрын
    • Thank you! That's awesome that you were able to make it yourself! I actually did, however, list the dimensions for the top cap using 2x4s but I had it as 4" instead of the nominal width of 3.5" wide. I updated the outer dimensions to reflect this. Thanks for the catch!

  • Excellent design, man! Worked for me. :-). I dropped the slat rails 1/2" and put a 1/4" piece of plywood on the slats, under the mattress, so you can't see the floor at the edge of the mattress. Oh, and stained to match the rest of the exposed wood.

    @surfinturfer@surfinturfer9 ай бұрын
    • Thank you and nice job! I would drill some holes in the 1/4" plywood for ventilation of the mattress. The slats are meant to allow the mattress to breathe so some holes in the plywood would help with that.
