Is This the Best Modern House in the World? (House Tour)

Crafted by James Stockwell Architect, Bunkeren could be the best modern house in the world. Considered more landscape than building, the concrete dwelling is a robust insertion within the surrounding natural context.
Embedded into a rocky forest edge just south of Newcastle, Bunkeren sits on the land of the Awabakal people. Externally, the building is reminiscent of the inspiring botanical garden that once occupied the location in the late 1800s; sprouting greenery covers the top of floating concrete platforms where, beneath, the internal spaces are held. A sense of architectural freedom is permitted by minimising necessary supporting columns and removing the need for load-bearing walls, lending structural significance and an impressive silhouette to what is considered the best modern house in the world.
A house tour of Bunkeren - named according to the Danish translation of ‘bunker’ - reveals the negotiated peaks and pitfalls of the bunker configuration. In materiality and position, the home expresses a reassuring invulnerability; partly shielded by the rocky landscape and comprised of concrete, Bunkeren can retain its structural integrity in the event of a bushfire or storm. Crafted by the architect to be low maintenance, the home does not require painting and cannot be eroded by mould or termites. The enveloping botanical element of the design supports the forest ecosystem and microclimates by interacting with natural species. James Stockwell Architect designs the interior to combat the limited natural light and ventilation associated with the architecture of a traditional bunker. Skylights and an internal garden draw light into the underground aspects of the home in an aesthetically engaging manner, whilst the elevated nature of the concrete platforms allows space for fresh air to travel through the dwelling.
The interior design of Bunkeren contributes to its potential as the best modern house in the world. Whilst utilising the work of local artists, James Stockwell Architect also takes care to reflect the influence of Danish design culture in consideration of the homeowners’ lifestyle. In application of the Danish principle of proportion, all decoration is scaled to human level, emphasising the togetherness of the family unit. The design also champions the Danish furniture inherited by the homeowners. A restrained approach to styling sees each space defined by a sense of intimacy, with the absence of elaborate ornamentation establishing an unimposing, experientially gentle atmosphere.
The most unique aspect of the home - through which James Stockwell Architects proposes Bunkeren as the best modern house in the world - is the cellar, situated at the lowest level. Inside the space, the rock into which the residence is settled within is left exposed, providing visual drama, natural tactility and a reflection of the external environment, blurring the line between the home and landscape. Warmed by the additional materials of wood, concrete and brass, the cellar exudes individuality.
In 20 years, the foliage surrounding Bunkeren will have grown, until the building cannot be clearly distinguished from its natural context. It is this foresight that allows Bunkeren to be considered the best modern house in the world.

  • This is just about the most elegant house with the most substance both for the current occupants and for future generations - presented by Local Project. .It is clear to me that the architect belongs to the same concept design group as the legendary John Lautner of California, most of whose works are landmarks.. people think it is easy to build a structure out of concrete..... I love the balance between concrete. open spaces, greenery, the sparingly used teac wood walls and other elements. What an incredibly gorgeous work of architecture! What a priviledge to live there....

  • This is such an exquisite home which is respectful of the land's history as the site of a former botanical garden. The placement of gardens on the roof which in time will serve to hide the or blend the home's existence with the landscape is brilliant. The seamlessness of internal and external space with sliding doors which open to the outdoors and the room which is part rock and part house is lovely and celebrates the environment. The use of diffused light throughout the home is quite gentle. Quite lovely.

  • Incredible! This fits into the Australian landscape so well. Proud of our world class design. For the foreigners - yes, you’d get some exciting critters in there every now and then, but nothing a good dustpan and brush can’t toss back into the bush - all worth it for those views! 😍

  • Absolutely beautiful. Love how you can see the imprint of the wood in some parts of the concrete and you showing both day, night scenes of the house. Also got a little Frank lloyd wright vibe from this design too. Fantastic design!

  • Frank Lloyd Wright's philosophy, his language of design and his ideas of building homes are (all) still alive and being carried on by the younger architects; as witnessed by this lovely house, I hope its a home?

    • I'm surprised I scrolled so far to see FLW mentioned... this quite clearly relates to Falling Water. It's a stunning house on its own and in its own right. But by the time we saw the raw rock (also another awesome detail) it felt close to imitation as a form of flattery

  • This is a stunning house. So many aspects and points to its construction. I would love to see a more comprehensive documentary about its construction, cost and layout. I’m going to be building at the end of this year, 2022, and so am looking for ideas and directions to take my place. This has so many things I love, especially the openness and the bathroom fittings.

  • When you said "Is this the best modern house in the world" that was a very bold statement and I was very cynical in viewing what was next. But what a beautiful house it is and yes it could be the best modern house in the world. Certainly the best Ive seen on the Local Project. So beautifully placed in the environment with what looks like a beautiful journey of discovery of the tones, textures and colours of the interior objects and furniture. I could really say this is a transcendent work of art.

  • The architects did an amazing job in creating a phenomenal, modern home that blends in so well with nature. Not always an easy task to make concrete look natural, the living roof is stunning as are all the views. The rock room is definitely my favorite space. Fabulous.

    @toosense@toosense2 жыл бұрын
    • For me that rock room is just a bit too subterranean. It could make a great bomb shelter though. I like that shower with the plant growing up to the light from a small atrium, and the spacious rooms overlooking the beach.
