A rabid coyote attacked my car with two of my daughters inside.

Coyote tested positive for rabies!
While driving home with my teenage daughters on a Saturday night, we saw this crazy looking coyote attacking my neighbors dogs. I tried to scare it off by shining my headlights at it, hoping it would just run off and return to nature - and it seemed to be working.
But then it turned (at the 0:42 mark), bared its bloody teeth and attacked my car. Realizing this coyote was extremely aggressive and probably had rabies, I called 911. After the description of the situation they decided to dispatch. The Huntersville Police Department successfully tracked the coyote down based on my description of where it was heading. Officers with Charlotte's CMPD animal control captured and euthanized the coyote later that night, just a few blocks from where I called it in. They sent the coyote's head to Raleigh where it tested positive for rabies.

    • Omg this was brilliant!...epidemiologist humor #1 :D also...do it try to retract when ur about to wash it....fear of water is a common & significant symptom! If it shows agression and try to bump other cars, this is also a warningsignal. Once the virus reach the transmission system it´s too late...no mechanic can save it. Then its a matter of time b4 it reach the engine, and your car is bound to suffer an agonizing death. *On a serious note, this disease is horrifying both to humans & animals...it´s not a peaceful death so take it seriously

    • Haha!! Brilliant. No - the GTI made it out alive with only minor bumper injury and thankfully never exhibited any signs of rabies. Unfortunately, about 2 years after the coyote incident, it met its end from a highway deer strike at 70 mph. That was a truly scary moment - I had just enough time to quickly turn right, or that thing would have come through my windshield.

  • There is a lot of videos on the internet claiming “rabid” animals, that are usually just a curious animal. This is 100% a Rabid Animal situation. Coyotes are timid animals. Even Urban Coyotes that are use to humans, prefer not to interact with humans. A telling indication was the deranged look it had and the over aggression towards a vehicle (much larger than it). The best thing to do is call animal control or local police. Keep the animal contained or follow it and update the authorities. If you’re unable to get ahold of them or they decline, you absolutely have the duty to take of it in the best interest of public safety. If you have a firearm, use the most extreme caution and care and standard firearm safety. Do NOT use a firearm in a residential area. Ever. I personally would just use my vehicle. It’s not the most humane, but rabies is 100% lethal anyways. The animal will eventually die in an inhumane way. My concern would be other humans at that point.

  • Rabies messes with the neurons in the brain. For me, it's similar to how a computer operating system, like Linux or Windows, starts messing up its filing system. You can't even try to correct it with a disk scan (or check disk), it might make it worse. The only way to correct it properly is to do a complete drive reformat & operating system re-install. Don't know if you understand that. You can't reformat a damaged biological brain though, like with this coyote, we don't have that knowledge yet (maybe in 2000 years). So, too late for this guy, when it already showed these symptoms. That's why they say to get to the doctor real fast if you think you got rabies, since it is eventually fatal, either after a week or two, or even after a few years.

    • A singular Coyote? Typically, Coyotes (especially solitary ones) are very timid of humans. Being chased by one is very unusual, and usually mistaken for one that is just curious. In the event it was desperate and willing to attack you, most coyotes are no match for a human. Humans are just too big and strong. You might get a few bites, keep your neck protected, but there isn’t much stopping you from beating a coyote into the ground. 99% of Coyote-Human interactions that entail combat, end with a dead coyote. Remember, always carry a firearm while in the woods!

I'd want to be euthanized before rabies could take hold, if anyone reading this doesn't know how awful rabies is for humans as well just check it out. I don't recommend watching the footage as any animal that shows symptoms has essentially a 100% chance of death, so you know the people in the videos died.

Attacks on humans by Coyotes is extremely rare, and usually only happens when you somehow get between them and their prey, or in the very rare case of a rabid coyote. As far as cattle is concerned, I am way ahead of you on that subject. Cattle ranchers invade public land, with their cattle, they use traps poisons, they shoot coyotes etc.. to protect their cattle who are indeed the invasive species. I don't eat beef, I don't eat any animals, because I don't want to support that twisted industry. I have nothing against cows, I feel sorry for them being exploited for food that nobody needs. But they invade lands, that belong to the coyotes first, along with other apex predators and wildlife. So you have no idea who you're talking to pal I know a lot more about this than you do. As far as coyotes getting people's pets? Anybody who allows their small pets to be outside in areas where they know there are coyotes, are stupid idiots. I live in an area with tons of coyotes, they come through my backyard all the time, but I'm not stupid I keep my cats protected, and we all live peacefully amongst each other. • You actually should avoid attacking an animal with rabies because their blood is infectious. The first thing you should do is call animal control so they can capture the animal and dispose of them safely. If possible, it's also a good idea to monitor the animal's behavior and location at a safe distance to prevent / watch out for it infecting other animals or people in the area until animal control arrives. If you live in a country where that service is not available, and if you're certain it has rabies, I suppose you could possibly try to kill the animal in a way that would avoid spread of bodily fluids as a last resort. (Perhaps brute force would be an option, but I'm not an expert.) If so, wear protective clothing to protect your skin and eyes from contact with infected material when you do. If there's a carcass of an animal with rabies, you should dispose of the body properly by wearing protective clothing to guard your skin and burying it with a shovel deep in the ground or bagging it multiple times before disposing of it in the garbage. Afterwards, disinfect the ground / shovel / all objects that came in contact with the infected animal or carcass with a 10% bleach water solution to kill the virus. Source: suffolkspca.org/information/safety-tips/rabies-information/#:~:text=Pick%20up%20the%20animal%20with,water%2C%201%20part%20bleach). Running over an infected animal with a car would probably be the worst possible option imaginable because you would then be tracking the virus potentially for miles across roads where it could infect all kinds of wildlife. In addition to that, if the carcass is left in the road, the mess could be run over and have the virus spread repeatedly by multiple different vehicles. That would be an absolute disaster.
