  • That's a funny video right there...only because my tire kicked my ass last night for over an hour! I'm glad I had the same issues as Smoot did. Nice scientific equation for the soapy water and setting the 2nd bead! We need to be neighbors!!

  • sometimes those things can be a pain. This may be a little easier for you. When you go to do this wait until you have a hot sunny day. take the new tire and lay it out on the pavement /concrete and let it get hot. May take a hour or two. That way the rubber gets soft and its a little easier to work with. And I use a lot more soap.

  • Even with vise grips I cannot get my tire back on. There has to be some other trick. This is really hard! EDIT: I got it on. In addition to all the other tools, the key technique is working on the ground/floor, not a workbench. Keep your knee on the side you put over the rim first. Without your knee compressing that side, the other side requires too much stretching to get on the rim. Hope this helps someone else.

  • Great job, thanks for the help! When I was a kid, back in the '60s, my dad had a gas station and I worked there fixing car tire flats as one of my chores. We had a really nice tire machine and I bet I fixed over 1000 flats when I worked there. This was the first garden tractor tire I had to replace and it wasn't fun or easy. I didn't have the big tire iron like you have, but I did have a pair of vice grips and a screw driver. Only took a couple minutes to get the new tire on. Thanks again.

  • The vise grips are a life saver. Keeps the starting spot down inside the rim.A long bolt in a vise helps to keep the tire from moving around too. Thanks . Good vid.

  • What a hassle this is. My neighbor and I did this last night and I was looking to see if there was a better way than how we did it. Apparently not. It probably didn't help that he was 3 sheets to the wind. I will say that if you want to save time use some very good snips and cut the old tire off; you don't need that hassle in your life, especially when you're going to wear yourself out trying to put the new one on anyway.

  • when you have it on the ground, knee or vise grips holding on, and you put that screwdrive or prying bar in and push it away from the rim, hold that with 1 hand and then take a hammer in the other hand, and just tap on it by the rim it will go right around ! I know it sounds hard, but do it that way once and you'll say O OK!

  • Great video - wish I had watched it before trying this for myself this weekend. Took me damn-near an hour to get 'er on the rim. The vice grip thing was a stroke of genius. I'll echo a helpful comment from below: securing the rim to the table is helpful for wrestling with the tire. Also, if you're at the air compressor part and the tire bead doesnt want to rise to the surface of the rim, a belt clamp squeezing the circumference of the tire can help force it to expand up. Thanks again. Great vid.

    • That strap also works great for holding the tire to the rim mounting the second side, get a piece of the tire under the lip of the rim then run the tail of the strap through the axle hole then around the tire into the tightening the rim to the tire this way you wont have to chase the tire, rope also works for this if you don't want your strap greasy.

  • Soapy water is very corrosive. Causes rusting of the rim inside the tire because moisture cannot escape the inflated tire. Silicone spray lube won't damage the rubber or cause corrosion. Also a rope tourniquet around the center of the tire will spread the beads and help with seating them.

    @cphank151@cphank15110 жыл бұрын
    • +cphank151 Not really. If you mix 60% dish soap to 40% water, the H20 will eventually evaporate leaving caked up soap suitable for the beading.

      @josephfasulo522@josephfasulo5228 жыл бұрын
    • John Ecker exactly. Especially if you wanna go all out and grind the bead and then run a thin layer of spray paint around it. Let it tack up and mount the tire. Bead will never corrode and it’ll never leak

  • The video is appreciated, but the valve stem would have been the first thing I checked, unless tire damage was obvious and I would have taken out the valve stem core with a valve stem tool to set the bead. On tires that are really difficult to bead, using a ratcheting strap or a rope with lots of tension around the tread of the tire, can help with getting the bead to catch a seal. Or, one can put a tube in tire and save some money.

    @EscambiaDemocrats@EscambiaDemocrats11 жыл бұрын
  • I hate seating the beads on tires... mainly because I don't have a compressor. It's not easy to do it with a bike pump, but it can be done sometimes if you run a ratchet strap around the tire to smoosh the bead against the rim

    @Gearheadtom@Gearheadtom12 жыл бұрын
  • Last time I changed the tire, it took me over an hour and a lot of stress. Thanks to your video, today it took me about 7 minutes. The vise grip trick is really good. I was almost ready to use two but managed with one. Also, I found that the tire would not fill up with air when lying on its side. Did you stand yours up on purpose or just by chance? Also, my tire did not suddenly pop onto the bead when overfilled with air, but it seemed to be sealed tight. Does it have to pop suddenly? I didn't want to hit it with my hammer. I drove it about two hours over rough terrain and did not lose much air so I'm guessing its ok. Thanks for posting!

  • I was waiting for the blood to flow. My easier way is to mount a long 5/8" dia eyebolt I have vertically in my big vise. It is the needed 3rd hand. I use the vise grips of course to anchor the start of the bead and just work it around. Safety glasses are a good idea since debris fly at light speed when the bead pops. If it does not seal I have used driveway sealer on the bead. I still have a ring of tar drops around the garage walls! I use pass link chain around the tread and twist it with a big bar to force the beads to the rim if they will not seat initially. To bad the tires were too far gone to just put tubes in them. A for Effort. P.S. I use a heat gun to make the 'hubcap' pliable and it comes off barehanded.
