  • Let me try to explain this as best as I can. The old guy has come from the future to fulfill some sort of a fantasy where he murders his friends when they were still young. For this, he visited his younger self, and clearly emotionally traumatised him. And then executed the plan where he pretended to be dead and all. He knew they'd go to his younger self with the tapes, and one of the tapes was of their murder that was yet to take the place. He had this tape as well because, well, he's from the future, where he has already done this; when past is altered so is the future. I guess the most twisted part is that it seems more like he wanted to traumatise his younger self. You can see that when the younger self says "he is me", he is clearly trying to fight off some messed up emotions and coming to terms with his sad future reality - the one who where he becomes a serial killer. However, I don't think I completely understand it because the dates present a loophole. He acts surprised when he realises that this guy has been murdering since the 90s, which means that the incidents in the movie take place after the first killing. This further implies that the younger self had already been murdering since a long time, and this negates his reaction in the movie.

    • i'm still processing what i just saw, but maybe the old psycho travels in time to do the killings? i mean, he went to back to1990 to murder someone, so the date is 1990 i don't know if it makes sense. I enjoyed the film, overall

    • @@Oriol-oo7jl That's my thought. It wouldn't make sense anyways because clearly they are in the 2020s or at least in the late 2010s, judging by the smartphone one of the guys is using. So, having in account they look 20-30s, the killer would be either a baby or hadn't born at all when the first tape recording took place. Also, I think the one we see lying on the ground has been attacked by the other one we see in the house, because maybe he knew the only way to fool them was by actually killing that version of himself, which involves a whole lot of new questions and paradoxes. Or maybe he just stopped his pulse at the exact moment he wanted somehow (I mean, he's from the future). I don't know which sounds more far fetched but man gotta love these short films...

  • So here's how I interpret it. If I'm incorrect, please feel free to let me know how. There's Bathrobe man in the present (B1) who's friends with the 2 final victims. Eventually he'll travel back to the 90s (as B2) and spend 30 years killing people. That's who we see holding the camera in the very end. Then, an even older version of him (B3) sends the completed tapes (or at least the final one) back to B2, who forces B1 to ensure his friends watch it and become traumatized. How's that sound?

    @dannycove3155@dannycove31558 ай бұрын
    • Ya it’s very good, I just don’t think there’s a B3, I assume B2 plays the role of B3 as well as his own for the sake of simplifying things. So what you see in the movie is what you get, it’s hard enough to follow the time travel theme as is in a 9 minute short.....but then to also figure about some unknown quantity is even more taxing.

  • As soon as they reveal the date is "tomorrow's," the time travel aspect becomes clear, though I didn't see the twist coming -- that the killer would be the homeowner's older self. That was novel and opens up a variety of potential motivations and psychological threads to pull and play with. The film is very well shot, with great use of lighting -- dim but not obviously so -- to set the mood and amp up tension. The story is terrific, though the writing has some holes that could use a little work. We're talking more of a tweak here than an outright overhaul. For example, a lot had to go right for the two hikers -- and only those hikers -- to find the killer in the woods. And it was only because, by chance, that one of them took a photo near where he lay and then noticed him -- barely -- while flipping through his photos later that night. And the killer had to rely on the hikers going to his younger self's home straightaway instead of to the police, which would be the more logical and likely option. One could argue that, well, he knew how it would all play out because he's from the future, etc., etc., but ... really? I know it was written that way to drive the story and add suspense but it was still a bit much. I'm not sure we needed the question -- quickly answered though it was -- of what the numbers meant, either. Of course they were dates. Sure, the hikers quickly reveal that "they must be dates," but the preceding line, "They're all labeled with different sets of numbers" felt contrived -- more a way to add an element of mystery than anything else. It's a little thing but there are a few of those unwieldy details in the film. The acting wasn't bad, but the performances were stilted and uneven at times, and moments of heightened emotion did not feel all that authentic. All that said, I did enjoy the film and think it has potential as a larger project in the psychological thriller genre. 3.8/5.

This dialogue is a contrivance, a purposefully vague antipode in an attempt to give narrative complexity by way of obscure, contradictory language. It doesn't leave the audience with coded nuggets to be contemplated. Instead, it leaves us wishing that character either spoke with clarity or emoted as if he had an epiphany about the killer's directions.

  • I'm trying to remember the last time I saw a short that *wasn't* allegedly 'award winning'. Maybe if your Mum comes into your studio and says it's the best short she's ever seen and she's so proud of you, that counts as an award, lol. Oh, and by the way, I'm casting no aspersions regarding this particular short, just making an observation because it included the usual 'award winning' epithet in its title!

      @variousmentalproblems@variousmentalproblems7 ай бұрын
    • @variousmentalproblems Yup. When I first started watching these sci-fi shorts (or any shorts, really) loads of them apparently *hadn't* won any awards, lol. Now, it seems that nearly every single short seems to have won some kind of award. I guess the judging panels have been busy! 😆
