    • So depending on the platform running the unifi controller software it can utilize larger storage than offered with the usg usg-pro and dream machine/pro. You also the the option of running on a server with linux and massive storage array. I put 200+ cams in a daycare last year and ran a storage block to hold data, they are only 1080p g3 bullets but they still fill 50tb of drive space rather fast... alternatively other systems i have installed and serviced also have the same wall. • Another interesting feature I've seen with some wireless WiFi NVR surveillance systems is that with a click on a feature button in the NVR setup menu, you can turn a compatible spare WiFi camera into a WiFi repeater/extender. You don't have to buy a directional antenna, or repeater, or convert an old router into a repeater, or mess with DD-WRT. So if your WiFi surveillance camera is too far from your NVR you can put another camera in between to nearly double the distance. (note: the middle "repeater" camera isn't used for video surveillance...all it does is act as a go-between for data to/from the distant camera and your NVR). This can make things a little easier. Edit to add: you can also use the "repeater" camera to help "bypass" any obstructions between the surveillance camera and the NVR that were interfering with the surveillance camera's signal.

  • How much storage capacity did you install for the security cameras, and how long can you record before it starts to erase old content? One of the biggest shocks I experienced upgrading from a 1080P system to a 4K system was how fast it chewed through an 8TB drive. The first time I actually needed to pull security footage off the hard drive, I realized that it had been overwritten well over a week prior! :( Also, are you purely using the drive slot in the Dream Machine Pro, or have you had to augment that?

  • 12/24V POE is the 'old' POE standard. Pretty sure that all of Ubiquiti's gear is old-school. Basically old-school POE is passive power, but not a whole lot of power because it runs at a lower voltage. Newer POE+ gear is far better. POE+ runs at 48V (actually more around 56V), can run much further distances and push far more power. POE+ negotiates the power capability with the device and doesn't dump real power into the cable unless the negotiation succeeds. So a gigabit POE+ switch is far safer than a POE switch because it makes sure that all 4 pair in the cable are working. Ubiquiti is ... expensive. Easy to use, but expensive. In terms of 4K video cameras, well... just about all modern IP cameras have excellent resolution, and even good night vision for static scenes. Where all of these cameras tend to break-down is when people are moving around at night. A combination of H.264 or H.265 compression and long shutter times usually makes features like faces pretty blurry at night. You need good lighting... not just the dinky infrared LEDs built into the cameras, but actual good lighting at night, if you want to be able to get good pictures of moving objects. -Matt

  • I went with the Ring doorbell system. The BIGGEST flaw is that when it's motion sensor alerts you, the video is unavailable while it's busy uploading the recording to their mothership, which takes 4 or 5 minutes, (and of course you have to pay the yearly subscription fee if you want to see that recording.) It took them years come up with "Rapid Ring" app which lets you see "Live" video, so now it works like it's supposed to and lets you talk to whoever is at the door. I also have the Stick Up outside camera on the side of the house. My router is only 20 feet away but the signal was unreliable so I ended up using a Power over ethernet cable (plus an overpriced interface box that sends the power to the camera). There's also a "Neighbors Ring" app to post videos in your own area, but the videos have to be approved by moderators before posting, and..well...they are bat-s crazy, (and that's the nicest way I can put it.) They rejected some of my videos, such as showing "salesmen" searching around my porch for a hidden house key. They claim it wasn't an "informative" video. So I can't warn my neighbors who may be hiding house keys on their porch under a planter??? Thieves with clipboards pretending to be salesmen are rampant here in Vegas, and if someone does answer the door, they can claim anything; say they are taking a poll about politics or whatever. So they rejected a video of possible home invaders/thieves, yet post videos of loose pets walking down the sidewalk, "Oh, the poor thing might be lost and needs to be rescued."

  • I've very recently seen at least 3 different WiFi systems that allow you to bypass any "cloud" storage or vendor connection and everything wirelessly connects directly to YOUR home WiFi router from which you can store the data on NAS and/or view/store on your WiFi or LAN connected PC. Some of the literature also looked like they allowed direct WiFi connection to your PC as well with their software providing many of the features of subscription packages. I haven't tried them personally, so have not verified what they are claiming in their literature but this is a major shift from the "MUST use the vendor's services for a fee" model of surveillance system. Then, there are also some freeware based software solutions that are compatible with many cameras that run from your PC (I and others might call it "freemium" software as a base set of features is free and you pay only if you need/want to use the more advanced features). It supports multiple cameras and has many features like built-in two-way communications (if cams support it). It claims you only have to use their online subscription services if you want to add remote phone connectivity features and add scheduling. I also haven't used iSpy or the other programs, so can't render a personal opinion about using them. iSpy does seem to be fairly popular. Here's some basic info on them (note: "ZoneMinder" and "Blue Iris" are NOT freeware): 1) The 10 Best Video Management Software (VMS) www.getkisi.com/blog/best-video-surveillance-software (from 2020) 3) iSpy: Turn laptops, webcams to security system with Motion & Face detection, recordings & alerts kzhead.info/sun/abyYlM9-iaicfKM/bejne.html (about 12 minutes, from late 2017 so it's not up to date) 3) ZoneMinder vs iSpy vs Blue Iris | Setup | Comparison kzhead.info/sun/abVukr6wo4eeg6s/bejne.html (about 25 minutes, also late 2017) Here's an excerpt from iSpy's "about" info at: www.ispyconnect.com/about.aspx _iSpy connects to the camera and shows the live view. You can then define specific areas of the video that iSpy should watch for movement, and set a threshold value for the amount of motion that would trigger automatic recording. iSpy can also operate in always-recording or manual-recording modes and supports scheduling and with an iSpyConnect subscription it supports remote access_ ============================================== Note: I don't have any personal or financial interests in any of the companies or people , nor am I associated with any of the URLs or their sponsors.
