A Decade Of Decisive Indian Actions To Counter China

NEW DELHI: The standoff due to incursion by PLA (People’s Liberation Army) troops into Depsang area of Ladakh in 2013 lasted three weeks but had a lasting effect on India about the need to prepare better to counter Chinese aggression along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). At that time, there was just one Army division, and that too a truncated one, looking after the eastern Ladakh frontier. Air Force deployments were mostly aimed at catering to Siachen. Infrastructure in the forward areas was poor, which was also the case in Arunachal Pradesh, along the eastern frontier with China. But now, a decade later, things have changed dramatically, be it infrastructure or troop deployment, as StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale explains in this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’.

  • Thanks to Nitin Gokhale for the comprehensive overview of the Indian military deployments and infrastructure development in the Leh-Ladakh area and Arunachal Pradesh border areas. One’s attention turns sharper on the mention of a dedicated military corps in the Leh area that is responsible for both defensive action along the LAC, as well as (possible) offensive action in the Aksai Chin region, if needed! It’s also heartening to know that alternate routes are ready to be used for deployments and commercial/development needs in those sensitive border areas. The new infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh seem to tie in with the current government’s focus on the northeast, both in terms of strengthening defence preparedness, as well as economic development. The vibrant village scheme in that area of Arunachal Pradesh is indeed a timely initiative. One hopes similar villages/ communities can be developed in the Himachal border areas, where it has been reported in recent months that several border villages are now desolate.

  • An excellent expose. However the issue is more fundamental - Indian political decisions are made last minute. They need a shake down or an intervention to respond to. Foresight is needed desparately with concomitant investment in infrastructure and defence ( citizen centric). But don't destroy nature. Let it work for India.

  • Excellent round up yet again. Having said that, I came in thinking I'll get a good idea of the situation in Depsang before 2013 and if it is any different since then after the Chinese incursions. I don't yet know if we can continue to patrol to all those places and points that we used to before the incursion or if China has come in and is sitting inside our claimed area. It'll be good if you can do an episode on that point once with maps.

To minimize stress and improve efficiency, it might be wise to seek the assistance of an investment advisor to help restructure your portfolio and identify any underperforming investments to offset. This approach has been successful for me and has reduced my stress levels.

  • Nitin ji please make a video on India's progress in application of AI, Quantum Computing and Robotics in Defence. It will dramatically improve the weaponry advantage , operation advantage (leanand mean) surveillance advantage and cost advantage (being potent enough against a larger industrial economy of china) i.e. sustanability advantage for outlasting long lasting war. We are still stuck up in building our basic level 1 infrastructure, when adversaries are way ahead than us. We have made progress but still we are a defensive force. We react but are not proactive at all. Also we need to get rid of puppet politicians in India who are on the China payroll.

    • There is a big problem. ITBP and BSF report to the Home Ministry. So information they get gets pushed up, filtered and then over to Ministry of Defence - then it gets filtered down to the local level. The obvious solution is to give the Army operational control of the ITBP, BSF formations who are manning the border itself. Unfortunately, there are silos to protect and we have not done that so far.

  • The fact that India's fast and sharp focus on infrastructure development is due to Chinese aggressive posture is least reported. Actually India should formally thank China for it. Let Indian planners prey that China continues with its misadventures so that the entire border infrastructure gets developed. This should help couple of decades later when India will have to help liberate the occupied northern neighborhood.

  • Very good stuff. Ensure that troops and population are well taken care off - living conditions, welfare, medical and logistics support. One must say that while India concentrates on building infra, it must also say that it needs to watch the enemy doing the same thing and in a conflict, disabling the enemy capability - destroying their logistics, disabling their communication network is key, beating their confidence and morale - its not going to be a typical war, Needs to be quick, decisive and surgical on all fronts.

(Now Mountain Strike Corps.) & 17 Mountain Strike Corps. as reserves for the respective Theatres. Infact, Army should also reorient the Yol based 9 Corps. towards China by bringing it under the Northern Command (in future Northern Theatre Command) instead of it being part of the South-Western Command that takes care of Pakistan border. It can take care of the Middle Sector bordering Tibet (Himachal & Uttarakhand). Army needs to focus on inducting equipment that gives it shoot & scoot capability in the mountains like Mobile Artillery & Mortar systems as well as fastracking Project Cheetah to upgrade Heron Fleet to enhance our Surveillance (& Armed) capability.

  • Interestingly, there were many such Nitin Gokhales, in the earlier part of 1962, who were showering high praises for the Nehru's audacious "Forward Policy", against China. Some of them were even drawing parallels between Nehru and Nepoleon. Euphoria and jingoism, in India, became particularly sky high, from mid September to 20th October. But, after November 1962, when the dust settled; these analysts were nowhere to be seen.

  • full of BS, not making any sense, one example is SSN road which is over 100 km to China's highway 219 at Galwan, HW 219 is close to India at Pangong Tso not at Galwan, it is right at the east edge of Pongong Tso. India spent $1.5 billion and 20 year built a strategic road SSN to support its north front line to Pakistan, however, at Galwan, this important road is only 5.7 km from LAC China side, so with China's anti tank missile Red Arrow 10 with range of 10 km, this road will be totally useless in war. So Indian army organized "snow leopard operation" by sending 600-700 Indian army (a battalion) to push China army out of this range, only be beaten miserably by PLA, now PLA is still the that same position, Indian army dared not to try again.
