Gordon Murray reveals the secrets to his new 663bhp T50 supercar. Better than the McLaren F1?

Gordon Murray takes me round the GMA T.50 and explains why he decided to launch this new supercar now, which he sees as the rightful successor to the mighty McLaren F1. With a bespoke 3.9litre Cosworth V12 that pumps out 663bhp at an incredible 11,500rpm and weighing only 986kg at the kerb, performance is going to be astonishing. Yet there's enough luggage space to make this a usable GT. The T.50 looks to be a truly amazing new supercar..

30:22 "No touchscreens anywhere. I absulutely hate them!" +++++++++++++++++++++ Thank God!
YES. I hate touchscreens deeply!
Every detail Gordon covers here is absolutely perfect. But there is just one small detail I really don't like. Those rearview screens look hideous, they need to be integrated.. almost as bad as the Tesla floating iPad! Everything else I can't argue with, I logical mix of analog and digital. It all makes sense
Most modern cars will outlast their touchscreens because the average lifespan of a smartphone is three years.
Amen. Those things are an affront to good ergonomics. How they're almost ubiquitous is beyond my comprehension. I'm hardly anti-tech, but it it makes for a WORSE user experience, you're doing it wrong.
Yeh, as soon as you touch it fingerprints everywhere!
I've now seen 5 different interviews with Murray and this is the only one where it feels like just 2 friends chitchating about cars. Magic.
I chose this one out of all the selection available to start off.
There are way too many interviews. I wish he just did a 60min all singing, all dancing video.
Agreed. I also enjoyed the carfection one but Henry Catchpole at times seemed a bit lost for words/questions. Understandably so given the magnitude of this amazing car.
Couldn't agree more. Harry asks all the right questions. Details details details.
I loved the topgear video because of the F1 in it. His old F1 . With Some stories .
30:23 - "No touch screens....anywhere! Absolutely........hate them". Thumb up!
It is then I stand up and applause, alone in my room!!!!
"The glass panel is a no cost option...I would hate to force 4.5 kilos on anybody." Porsch and Ferrari really need to pay attention
Let's be honest, we all saw the videos from Top Gear, Drivetribe, ... and all we thought was: I'll watch Harry's video! Simply the best car guy in my eyes.
I didn’t see them. Only this popped up.
You read my mind..!!!
Yep
i think i have for or five in subs, this was 1st i watched , and doubt very much i will learn anything more on all the rest , will let u know
Yup, Harry's Garage first and then Carfection. Actually they discussed some different things so it's definitely worth watching both of these. I can't speak to the rest, but maybe I'll check those out as well. But yeah, watching these two discuss this future legend was just incredible.
"22 inch wheels are nonsense" Amen.
"Carbon wheels are dodgy"! And GM provides a technical explanation
Yes. A lot of cars these day are designed by marketing team not engineering team, it looked cool but a pain in the ass to drive daily
Amen ?
33:23: "A gearstick is a gearstick". Amen.
@@johnthedude1000 As in "Finally a car company who tells the truth". Oversized wheels are advertised as sporty while no race car have bigger wheels (rims) than 18". The only thing 22" stock wheels tell you is the obesity of the car.
Murray is a gentle genius. He doesn't need to impress us, his work does it for him. And on top of it all he has an unbelievable aesthetic eye, designing beautiful and efficient cars. I'd compare him to Nathaniel Herreshoff, who designed the most beautiful and the fastest racing yachts in the early 20th century. His F1 cars were the most beautiful and the fastest of their periods, like the Brabham BT-52 or the McLaren MP4/4
“I have no idea , I don’t care about numbers” Seriously, I love Gordon Murray’s mentality.
Right? He made this car with the wisdom of an old man but catering to his inner young man. He went straight for the feels!
@@jesuschristiscallingyou953 true!
His philosophy naturally sorts the numbers out.
@@weallfollowmanutd It will beat all the predicted numbers. Someone analyzed the F1's numbers on the record run with no rev limiter. Ridiculous. 0-300 18.6 sec. Quarter mile 10.6s at 139 mph. Just a second off the P1.
A man who doesn't care about numbers tells us the weight of every component, the percentage reduction in drag coefficient, the flow rate of the undercar channels, and in short so many numbers that we could write a maintenance manual just from what he says off the cuff. Not criticising, just sayin'.
I was waiting for Iain Tyrell to appear and put a length of garden hose to the running engine and say it needs tuning properly
Did you notice Jay Leno banging on the window demanding to be let in.
Gordon should send him an engine with carbs on it to tune by ear :)

After 10 minutes or so, I imagined all three of them standing there, chatting about this car.
Two Legends of the industry talking about tomorrow’s icon. Must watch.
Harry is as good as they get, and he makes wonderful videos for us time and again!
David Woollcott . It burns fossil fuel, how can it be tomorrow’s icon?
@@advancelast1740 An icon doesn't have to be technologically advanced. It's just an icon. (BTW. This car is technologically advanced but it's just burning fuel.)
We will be using hydrocarbons for another 20-30 years. Easily enough time for this to become an icon; Gordon Murray concedes this point himself during the interview...
@@Billywoo12 Probably even longer than that. I'm currently studying automotive and the main technology we study is internal combustion engines. During school projects engines have been built with mileage of 1000km / litre. I'm very positive that hydrocarbons will still be used as fuel 50 years from now. The source of these fuels might shift however.
Murray proves something Chris Harris said “Let the engineer give you the car he wants to design”. Not using focus groups etc. It looks so small for what they have put in it. A fabulous feat of engineering from all concerned. Does make you wonder how our car industry went so wrong when we have so much talent! I look forward to seeing it on the road!
I could have happily watched a 3 hour version of this without a break, loved every second! Gordon's design philosophy and knowledge are truly the gold standard
At last a car without any f%$#^* touch screen. This guy is my new hero.

The Bugattis don't have screens.
Truly the last analogue supercar
I would have liked it if it had an analog speedometer too - that would make it totally timeless. But it would mess up the symmetry of the dash.
This popped up in multiple channels today, of course I watched Harry's first.
So did I!

Damn right. Go to the most knowledgeable and experienced person first. Then look at the other videos after to pass some time.
Quite possibly one of the most interesting, and life-affirming videos I’ve watched in a long time. A privilege to hear Gordon talk through in such detail, and I’m glad that we live in a world where such a thing can exist!
Imagine having so much knowledge about cars in your head. Astonishing.
And he's poured just about all of it into this car by the sound of it!
Gordon Murray is a no bullshit, purist, pragmatist. I love his thinking and design philosophy.
That's precisely what's fascinating about him (and Harry coming to think of it). When you look at Jung’s 16 personality types people seem to fall (almost invariably) either in one of two camps: creative design or pragmatism… it’s almost mutually exclusive and it’s very rare to find people who combine those two traits. No wonder the car is a literal engineering beauty.
@@superfost2001 It's the combination of passion and emotion, structured and manifested through reason. I guess it takes a pretty integrated personality to achieve that.
And not to forget - he's able to explain all the complicated things in layman terms without sounding stupid.

Am I the only one that has the distinct impression after watching this video that Ferrari and Lamborghini make cars full of bullshit you not need in a driver-focused supercar?
It's not 1950 anymore. Gone are the good ferrari and lamborghinis
Don't mind lamborghini to be fair , but absolutely hate ferrari , company and cars . Grew up loving them to . This t50 is everything a performance car should be . Usable power and not something stupid like a 1000bhp and 250 mph to drive through London at 20mph and show off .

Agree he has made the car how he envisioned it to be. My only worry is the engine. A V12 is almost obsolete today let alone in 2 years time when the car will be in production. Emissions and subsidies are going to be bit of an issue in the UK and Europe. I guess the clients for this car will not worry too much, but V12s are not used nowadays for a reason. Also couldn't agree more with the comments about cars getting bigger and heavier. Harry is a legend, he's clever enough to know he's got a genius in front of him and he lets Gordon do the talking rather than interrupting as a lot of less competent people would do.
Yes I've been thinking for quite some time about this nonsensical fashion of enlarging, lengthening, widening. Take the humble Polo for example, or the even humbler Punto: they're now at least 30% bigger and wider than their ancestors, the Polo originally conceived as a practical little eurobox, her sibling now as big as a series 6-7 Golf, the old series 2 Punto a compact and nimble-looking (appearances can be deceiving...) little thing, now a ponderous oversized object with wannabe-a-D segment delusions. Or the Ka, or the Fiesta. In times when traffic congestion, parking spaces, fuel prices and whatsnot are crucial issues, I think car designers ought to focus on achieving the same modern standards of comfort and economy without listening to marketing gurus and proxy copycats 'suggestions'. Now, a modern and efficient, downsized environment- and wallet -friendly, no-nonsense vehicle would be the real new boy in town! Having said this, as regards the T.50, I think that Mr Murray has just made an outstanding, free-thinking and genial comeback, and he couldn't have had a more appropriate interviewer than our usual intelligent, classy, elegantly competent Harry Metcalfe: the various Top Gears, Jay Lenos, Doug De Muros etc (just who the heck do they think they are?) can quietly sit down, have their 2 pints of Pumpkin Spice Starbucks, count their USD and hope, one day, to have Harry's Garage style and casual professionalism. Though I doubt that very much.
Stunning! Gordon reminds me of Doc from ‘Back to the Future’ getting excited about the Delorean time machine 😀
Great to indulge this topic, rather than edit it down too much. Well done Mr Metcalfe for keeping it to this longer format, which it absolutely deserved. Loved it.
Ok, that's it. It doesn't get any better. Absolutely love the car: middle seat, no touch screens, no 'look at me' spoilers...pure perfection all the way.
Pretty big look at me fan in the rear, though.
I'm sure the track version will have look at me aero and wing
Ladies and Gentlemen... Mr. GORDON MURRAY is back!
Pure but raw engineering perfection. People like Gordon Murray are a credit to human race. On a different note, I’m not sure how many of the 100 owners of the T.50 will be as passionate as Gordon about the 30 litres of luggage space that Gordon has worked so hard to design into the car. Surely he won’t need me telling him that the stereotypical multimillion/billionaire customer that will be a GMA customer will choose to use another car from their fleet of 50 for their shopping trip to Harvey Nichols
Just such a great video, car and couple of guys. Could watch this 10x
Voice shouting from the rear ‘Gordon I have Jay Leno on line 1 and Rowan Atkinson on line 2.....’ Gordon ‘Don’t worry they will both ring back....’
So funny hearing Murray mocking his F1 “there was so much rubbish on it” 😂
Guinness Harvey That won’t make him popular...
@@lotusgroup123 ??
He's a perfectionist, doubt he's 90% happy with this car ha ha
He should keep the word rubbish for the lame front and hilarious rear of his T50.

@Harry’s garage Outstanding Sir, I salute you for delivering an interesting and informative piece of information. Thank you.
I thought I new a bit about cars - this is on another level ! Loved it when he said that exhausts and rear lights have to be round - a purist indeed !
This is quite possibly the best video I've ever seen. Thank you, Harry, for bringing us this and going into the detail that makes us truly appreciate the level of engineering that has gone into this beautiful car.
Will never be an owner, a driver or even get to see one. Just to know that such a car exists with a no compromise to what the designer wanted makes me smile. Thankyou Mr Murray for walking us around your creation its been a privilege.
Never say never!!
My apologies Harry. I wrote my comment before noticing that you had already expressed the same. Isn't the car just absolutely wonderful !
Absolutely fascinating ; I am not a piston head but was mesmerised by the discussion and detailed explanation of the car body design and power plant with all of the ‘Road car’ functions brilliant .
Thank you both, 2 smart friends having a simple chat not an interview.
