5:06 I like how "Ghost" was capitalized as if that was the actual name of their species. It's Boo. They're Boos. (I do agree, though, that it was a waste to not have any Boos in the creepy castle, especially since fighting them is Luigi's specialty)

What the guy above said, canon wise (it we are considering that they just made it to the mushroom kingdom thus all the characters sorrounding it for the first time) the events of Luigi’s mansion hasn’t happened yet
Second movie'S substory focused on Luigi, bet. The brothers meet Yoshi, YOshi is too scared to go into the haunted house (nonchalantly creating a reference to SMWs castles, where you couldn't enter with Yoshi) and Mario stays behind because Yoshi baby and wants to stay with papa Mario. Thus Luigis Mansion subplot.
IKR, I was expecting to see at least some kind of Luigi's Mansion reference but nope

11:48 to be fair, when a blue shell is thrown it will only go after the person who is OR WAS in first place, despite if their place changes or not. This means that peach had just passed DK after the shell was thrown. A lot of people tend to misunderstand this phenomenon because they either haven’t played Mario Kart enough to witness this happen or they haven’t played Mario Kart at all. Insert “🤓” here.

This is game dependent. Newer titles will only fully lock onto the player in first once they get line of sight with that player. You can hear it coming or see it on the map and slow down to have it hit someone else. Usually isn’t worth it, but it’s possible. Obligatory “🤓” for knowing this though.

It will also go towards the player in first place relative to if 1st already crossed the finish line. Say if 3rd finished, 4th would be targeted and so on. 🤓

To be fair, a live action attempt at a Super Mario Bros. Movie in the 1990s went south and didn't make 1 billion dollars. Slapping Mario to your movie doesn't guarantee that it'll make bank.

In defense of the film, the "if she says no, do something else until she says yes" is the strategy the villain uses. Kids are (hopefully) smart enough to make that distinction.
The biggest sin is that Nintendo remembers Kid Icarus and the fact that it hasn’t got a game since the 3rd era.
Hades said we had to wait 25 years for the sequel, so expect Kid Icarus Uprising 2 in 2036.
Damnit Hades is the sassiest final boss ever and thats what meakes him great
I think Mario playing Kid Icarus may be a nod to the fact that he teamed up with Pit in the Subspace Emissary in Super Smash Bros Brawl.

We loved this movie and it was one of the few that my nephew actually sat thru, (he's 8). I feel its a great start to more movies if the want. I was simple, bright, and fun. It didn't try and put our world into their, just let them make their own. And I think they saved the Boo and Luigi crossing paths incase they make a Luigi's Mansion lol

I don't doubt the kid enjoyed it, but he's probably seen dozens of movies like it, and is going to see a hundred more movies like it by the time he's 12. To accept colorful, fast-paced mediocrity as imaginative under the pretense that it's bright and exciting and involves Mario is to accept that _"bright + exciting + familiarity = imagination."_ The movie is a babble of visual and verbal memes. If our society doesn't think kids deserve substance, then bring on the sequel.

You're making the classic mistake of mixing up a child's perspective with "childperspective"--one is what the child is actually experiencing and the other is what adults think is best for them based on what they think children SHOULD experience. Children lack the ability for empathy and abstract thinking required to truly appreciate culture and it is pointless to try and teach it to them as it is something that develops over time. The familiarity that you're so vehemently against serves to lay a foundation from which they can start experiencing media and culture with more complex concepts.

I haven't seen this movie, but holy SHIT did that "Finally... mercy" killed me. Like, I haven't laughed at a kid's movie in almost 15 years but THAT killed me.

Movie wants to remind you of all the fun you had playing Super Mario Bros, but then reminds you that someone else is in the driver's seat... and they do a damn good job at making it enjoyable.
I get it now. I understand what was going on the minds of the critics when watching this movie. However, I personally still think this movie was amazing because it gave me exactly what I wanted out of a movie about Mario. References galore.

Even if the plot didn't make a whole lot of sense the references were amazing. I couldn't believe they actually referenced Kamek's Peach disguise from the end of Mario Bros. Wii.

Subspace Emissary was a pretty great video game movie. Didn't fill itself with references. Or a mockery of a plot or any empty moral lessons. It was a story about video game mascots being video game mascots. And it shut up.
Sonic the Movie (2020) was an excellent example of a video game movie that, despite production hiccups, managed to turn out to be a successful film that respects its source material. It's refreshing to see that Super Mario Bros. Movie continues this tradition, and I hope that we'll get to see more awesome video game movies in the future.❤️💚💙
I just hope we actually start getting more substantial ones that don’t play it safe either

15:38 I think this was accidentally made canon with the release of Super Mario Wonder, where you actually *can* share the star with your allies just by touching them after you get it, similar to how Kirby's star-equivalent power-up works in his games lol
Sharing a super star has been canon to the Mario universe since the Gamecube era. This is because of Mario Kart Double dash, were you can use the star to make both of your characters, and the Kart invincible with a single star. But if you are looking exclusively at the platformer games, there is 3D World from the WiiU/Switch, all you need to do is have one character with the star pick up, or get picked up by, someone without one. I am not sure if it was in any of the other games.
It's not a perfect movie but it gets my childhood nostalgia kicking. Jeremy is a national treasure.

13:25 The last time someone tried to make a Mario movie, it was everything but "average". So, an "average" Mario movie is a huge upgrade.
To me one of the best Video Game Movies ever made. Its crisp design, the many many (and accurate) references playfully woven in, the soundtrack and different musical themes. As a 32 year old lifelong Nintendo fan this movie was a fun delight.

In my opinion. It’s Detective Pikachu. It has a decent story. Reference the games pretty well. And can still be enjoyed even if you aren’t a Pokémon fan.

Yes, but there is such a thing as too MUCH fanservice in one film. There's a difference between appreciating your roots and keeping true to the material, and mindless internet-baiting easter egg hunting. Being better than the fever dream of the live action movie does not make it any less sinful in other, more reasonable ways. Also, Luigi is done dirty here.

Should've mentioned the fact that Kamek just disappears from the movie with literally zero explanation after Peach kicks the Star to Mario. This guy can teleport; he absolutely could've gotten to the Star before Mario did.
Though you might not have known what to call him, because in spite of being the film's secondary antagonist, his name is not said ONCE in the ENTIRE MOVIE!

9:00 to be fair, that has happened multiple times throughout history, one of them being the Roman king Servius Tullius, and another(I forgot his name though) came from foreign lands and was elected king simply because everyone liked him
You missed the part where Mario takes damage with the Mini Mushroom and reverts to being normal Mario, when in the games, the Mini Mushroom does not provide an extra hit buffer and instead taking damage as Mini Mario kills you normally - you don't 'grow' to small Mario.

Having ambition is all it takes to make a videogame adaptation work That's why most of the recent adaptations, like "Sonic The Hedgehog", "The Last of Us " and "Arcane" worked Because the people behind it understood the games, and understood filmmaking In the past, the studios hired anyone to do anything, without a care in the world, like the 1993s live-action
And yet made very safe and kinda bland movies with Mario and Sonic 1….

As a person that work at a pizza place, people leaving half or even nearly whole pizza behind is very common. The boxes are free people! And we have to throw it out if you leave it.

I really enjoyed this movie, but I grew up with Mario and DK so I got all the references. I thought it was a pretty well done and a fun movie. I went in with pretty low expectations, so maybe that helped lol.

Nah, it is just a good animated movie. My nieces and nephews love it, and i don't recall them having any Mario in their upbringing.. possibly mariokart on wii? Good movie for kids, full of nostalgia for adults - killer combo
Well actually we do see the mystic world through the pipes in super Mario 3D world as they are going through the clear pipe. (the scene I am mentioning is at 4:21 )

Going off of what I've heard movie reviews say about Wish, (yes actual ones available on KZhead) that movie would deserve that more than this movie.

This movie was exactly what people who went to it wanted to see. For those confused, no one was looking for cinema. They were looking for nostalgia and references. Job well done.
Not cinema but more than just fanfare that more than half of the targeted aged audience didn’t get. I went cause I’m a huge Mario fan but walked out a little disappointed… I’m sure they put story into the Sonic movies, whose trying to watch Sonic?? Same type of people who wanted to watch Mario

(First one was eh) I was a Mario fan since childhood, walked out of it feeling nothing. I came to realize the more effort Sonic had in his entry, was how they managed to balance both little nods towards the games, and develop an engaging story on top of that. Mario had nothing, any semblance of a solid character moment is later thrown away in the dust. The most common response to something like this is "this movie wasn't for you, you high high standards, go watch woke political movies made by Disney and Pixar, it didn't NEED a story or character arc to be good, it was made for the and ONLY fans and thats what makes it objectively good." Any type of view or opinion you have on this film is valid, but it's important to understand you are obviously valid in liking something, while admitting it's not something well put together. Trust me, I have that case as well.

The Ice Flower power-up first appeared in a 1992 issue of a Super Mario Manga comic, so it predates Frozen by quite a long time. Also in the Mario & Luigi RPG games, there is precedent for getting star power ups simultaneously.

Shockingly, ice melts faster than iron, you could also see the manhole cover slowly melting as Luigi holds it

Since the day I watched it I was like "the only way this is going to get good reviews is because it says 'mario' in the title" and that statement is still true. This movie isn't bland but it is exactly what it is. A movie. It plays literally everything safe. From the characters to the writing. Everything is so safe because it has to be. When they make a sequel it will be the exact same. Another billion dollars for the most generic movie of all time. I had fun watching this movie but I think a lot of this video sums up my feelings towards it.
Finally someone who’s being honest with themselves instead of insisting this is some true masterpiece
The movie has amazing visuals, it's extremely well animated, the plot is not revolutionary but is entertaining. It plays it extremely safe but as so it goes by the beat, like following a recipe on the back of an instant cake mix, you're not going to make the best cake ever but it's going to be cake and it's going to taste good. Movies don't exist in a vacuum, and while this movie isn't an AMAZING movie, it is Great at being a MARIO movie, it's not trying to be a great movie by itself but it's trying to exploit the fact that it's a mario movie to the fullest and it does it very well, so no, I don't think it gets good reviews just because it says "mario", there's plenty of mario things that don't get good reviews.
@@_korbo_ yes that’s true, it’s a fine Mario movie, and I respect the hard work behind trying to adapt vanilla Mario to the bigscreen especially knowing Illumination, but there’s also movies like the Lego Movie, or Barbie, that could’ve easily been fanservice and a 90 minute ad, but instead chose to tell a story, even as ridiculous as it seemed, with heart and characters you grow to like and understand, and giving a great message that you can take away from the experience when the credits roll, and unfortunately Mario didn’t really do that, and it’s a shame cause there WERE solid ideas here, especially the brothers relationship, and instead they just rushed it and left us feeling underwhelmed especially after so much anticipation and fear of what it could turn out like
Tbh it was so boring to me. When Jack black actually started singing it brought me back into the movie but outside of that it has to be the most generic movie I've ever seen. Rainbow road was cool but it really didn't need to be a Mario movie. And if it wasn't, you know this would been an agreed upon 6.5/10

No matter what the sin counter says, this is still one of the best movie adaptations of a video game EVER! Especially if you’re a Super Mario Brothers fan.
I didnt really like this movie, but they clearly knew exactly who their markets were and nailed them: It swaps games at the perfect pace to keep easily distracted kids entertained and focussed throughout the entire movie. It drip-feeds references at just the right pace to keep adult Mario fans paying attention and going "he said the thing" throughout the movie.
If only it were good for non Mario fans. I am a Mario fan but I can see how someone who’s not a fan would find this movie average.
@@lucasmatthiessen1570 This movie turned me into a Mario fan, so that really depends :) Before, I knew very little about the Mario franchise considering how big it is, but the movie looked so good and I thought it could be fun. Ended up loving it much more than I could have possibly imagined with my limited knowledge at the time.

Mario + Luigi: Partners in Time came out in 2005, which upon being used in combat temporarily granted the Bros. the ability to pelt targets with ice balls. The first games that actually altered his appearance were Super Mario Galaxy (which temporarily turned him into a light blue reskin of Metal Mario that could spawn platforms of ice at his feet when running over a body of liquid) and Super Mario Bros. Wii, which turned his cap and shirt light blue and his overalls red and, like Partners in Time, gave him cryokinesis. The only real difference is that Frozen came out like 7 years later, was born with her cryokinetic powers and on top of that would grow uncontrollable when her emotions became negative. And while yes, we have yet to see Peach use an ice flower in the games, other characters in the franchise did beat Elsa to the ice-cold punch. Also are we going to mention the fact that the super star that lasts *10 SECONDS* in the games somehow lasts for a good *MINUTE*?
Whatever we could say about the details of this movie, it's on par with all those Mario cartoon shows from the 90s. Heck they even sing the Super Show song in the beginning,

Yeah same here! Jack Black honestly sucks as Bowser I was disappointed with it even when it was announced the same thing with Seth Rogan as Donkey which was even worse.

Honestly, seeing all of the hype surrounding it makes me wonder how the reaction would've been if it were Jack Black singing AND an actually fitting and interesting music number, instead of improv where it feels like the gimmick is Jack Black listing random elements of the movie while singing.

you missed a sin in the mario vs donkey Kong scene when D.K absolutely beats the shit out of mario the most he gets is a swollen cheek but in the bowser vs mario scene ( before the star part) mario gets hit only like 3 times and comes out of that part with a fully bruised face so getting injured only when it's important to the story cliche
There's also a MASSIVE gap between dk and bowser in terms of strength and durability, just look at the games. Dk punched the moon yet can doe in lava; but bowser has punched planets and a dip into the sun, as well as some black holes.
This movie was actually very good, which is strange for a modern movie.

Imo, the most rewarding thing about this movie for those who grew up playing the games, is the "shortcut" that Cranky Kong suggests... just for it to turn out to be the Rainbow Road lol.. pure gold
