Today, we count the sins of the (much needed) reboot to Tomb Raider. Was it a great reboot? We certainly thought so. But that doesn't mean it's free from sin! Prepare for a game that is riddled with some of the most cliches in a video game. And we pointed out ALL OF THEM.

Indeed, this is axiomatic logic, in my opinion. Not trying to chafe, but if cliches are derived from the most common or shared experiences in a human life, then life itself must very often be cliche. Moreover, what makes a character three-dimensional and able to be related to is often shared experiences that the player can imagine themselves as undergoing. So a cliche can be quite powerful and far from a mistake, if executed tastefully.
There should have been a sin for not being able to watch the scene where Whitman gets killed
and one for click bating people into the dual pistols gonna be a thing in the sequels after the fight with Mathias.
And it's a good thing Roth died.... otherwise we wouldn't have Tombraider Lara Croft but Uncharted unlimited.

People can survive gunshots to the head. Not typically, but it does happen. So the dude moving about for a minute after being shot, while unlikely, is perfectly plausible.
but yet it still happens, hence zoeinwonderland's point, gun shots to the head are not always 100% dead set killers people can and do survive this, granted it is of very small proportion of the brain which can sustain such damage and still function, but it can and does happen! and that is an actual fact!
my friends dad got shot right in between the eyes with a .38 revolver and lived. It did some damage to his brain but he's not mentally handicapped or anything. Its pretty incredible.

But the guy Lara shot was shot in the frontal lobe, which controls all voluntary movement. So while someone can survive without a frontal lobe, they would be completely paralyzed. This guy was still moving, so the sin still applies.
Kingdom080500 his entire frontal lobe was not removed though, only a small portion of it was damaged. people have been known to live through this kind of trauma without being paralysed. in fact, in the 1930s, common solutions to mental health issues seemed to be simply removing parts of the brain, predominantly the frontal lobe. but I agree that it is rather unlikely. besides, this is a video game which are, in a great number of ways, unrealistic (I mean, check out the two consecutive yet somehow nonlethal shots the protagonist takes to the head in a cutscene in Fallout: New Vegas), but it wouldn't be escapism it it wasn't

The gameplay is fun, but the game tried way too hard to be modernized. Also Lara is ridiculously unbelievable in this game. She's supposed to be an emotional and relatable character, but she kills more enemies than Marcus Fenix and Master Chief combined.
GameRaider Trying to survive with no previous experience whatsoever (cause it starts when Lara Croft wasn't really Lara Croft yet) besides shooting a man in the face and crying for 5 minutes after that. Then proceed to headshot dozens of baddies only minutes later. Seems legit.
GameRaider But it still is lazy storytelling, for a video game should incorporate the story in its mechanics. This game was supposed to tell Lara Croft's origin story, yet it suffers from GTA's same dichotomy: a (more or less) believable and relatable plot coupled with consequence free sandbox gameplay. In this case going from wreck to kickass in such a short span is more than just jarring.
Its lazy when it happens so fast instead of developing her character in as slower pace like a tutorial where she is climbing on a mountain or other activities with cutscenes that show more of her character, instead we got the far cry 3 problem made worse

The only thing I hated about this game is the fact that in the cutscenes Lara was so incompetent. I know this is her first adventure like this and she’s young but I always felt like in game Lara and cutscene Lara were two different people. One was a badass killing machine and the other was and incompetent blunder who can’t fight and stands there while people get killed in front of her and she has a gun, three guns actually. It just pissed me off when so many times Lara sat there when she could have saved someone.

their are a few cutscenes where Lara kills people though, she kills Mathia's in a cutscene and she kills Himiko in a cutscene too, I think that the reason why she doesn't kill as much in the cutscenes is because whenever a cutscene plays out is immediately switches to gameplay.

Uncharted took some cues from TR but it was in and of itself its own thing. These reboots, in turn, are just Uncharted minust any charm and plus a gigantic stick up their ass.
I'm stunned there was not one sin for all the times that Lara, equipped with automatic and semi-automatic firearms, decides to take on three-to-twelve unarmed men with the bow and promptly gets her ass kicked. It happens like three times.

To be fair, at least in gameplay I tended to opt for burning arrows myself. The damn rifle felt about as accurate as an AK-47 and I would use it only when enemies came in droves without any way to put some ground between me and them. The shotgun I only ever used for something else than door blasting in the final boss fight. The bow at least felt reliable.
@@yarpen26 I meant in all the cutscenes where she'd ambush people in a narrow hallway with her bow. She'd get rushed, manage to arrow one or two, but then the others would beat her bloody. This is even dumber when you remember the assault rifle and shotgun cannot be missed. However, depending on your choices, Lara might still have the crappy bamboo bow she took off a corpse!

You missed the most important sin of all, worth 1000 pts. The fact that mathias ended up being correct!!!! The ENTIRE game he was being portrayed as being "insane" for thinking Sam had to be sacrificed in order to get off the island, and he was absolutely correct, making him not insane at all!!!
I know this is four years later but ALL the idiot Mathias had to do was burn the ***dead body of the queen and the weather would have cleared immediately.

First he WAS wrong, Sam WASN'T needed to be sacrificed to escape the island, they literally didn't sacrifice her to leave. If she SHOT Sam then yeah that would prove villain right but she didn't, all they needed was to burn the corpse and voila. As for the Oni part. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't remember them talking at all, so it's save to assume they didn't figure it out because they're literally walking dead. Or alternatively they didn't burn the queen because maybe she wanted to live? I think one of the journals of the villain mentions how she whispers to him, so clearly she doesn't actually want to die, but get reborn again hense it makes sense that he decided to sacrifice Sam, really the bigger sin here is that Lara NEVER TOLD HIM THE QUEEN CORPSE CAN JUST BE DESTROYED TO LEAVE. From his pov, sacrificing Sam DID look like the only choice and Lara never went "WAIT. I learned how we can actually leave the island. If her corpse is destroyed, her soul will pass away and no more magic" but she didn't. Don't take my critique of your and OPs comment as me defending her writing, far from it, I just think villain motive and how they acted towards Sam/Queen is least bad part. The story itself has issues like cliches, asspulls and maybe it's just me, but I saw like THREE cases where if Lara in cutscenes used her gun, the story would've ended. She had so many opportunities, especially at the end she had one where he goes with Whitman, literally cap his ass and Whitman will cower in fear, but NOUUUUUUUU Lara just didn't wanna act smart and so the villain escapes and Whitman dief without paying for his crimes.

I just recall some visuals and a rough Japanese look. As coincidence would have it, I'm actually now in the process of going through Rise. Taking into account how little I remember from the first game, I'm willing to bet thus one's writing hit the new low. Every single line of dialogue feels like it might as well have come from a 1940s adventure movie, just with the main lead genderswapped (at times it's actually somewhat refreshing though, being exposed to such stick-up-your-ass super serious delivery in the era of omnipresent Marvelesque cynicism). They failed so spectacularly in the research department (by placing Kitezh on the wrong end of Siberia and by turning Siberian plains into a Himalaya wannabe because Uncharted had done it), it's not even funny. Going through this and at times even having a reasonably good time, but giving absolutely no shit about the Trinity or the obviously treacherous lady or anything.

People want to enjoy their games, you know. But there are some guys who want to act like they're clever that always try to ruin the game, by highlighting all the mistakes or the parts they think are illogical or wrong. In the end, they make the audience to dislike the game without even playing it. Also, Tomb Raider has actually taken 2 awards (or more). For the Best Story of the year, i think of 2013, and for the best female protagonist.

The sole reason cinemasins and GCN exist is y to find movies and games, and then point out legit flaws and make little nitpicks here and there. Everyone's just upset because he's doing what CS is doing only with video games, saying he's a ripoff and whatnot. Which is really dumb, that's like saying Darksiders is a ripoff of Devil May Cry. They're both hack n slash puzzle games, just with different characters and whatnot. Same with CS and GCN, both of the sin forms of entertainment, just one does movies and the other does games. i really enjoyed this game but the two things pointed out that DID drive me crazy were that when you got lost you could just turn on your objective beacon, and that i sort of assumed himiko was causing the storms from the very beginning and it took lara sooooo long to figure it out. like HELLo.

Having played the original Tomb Raider series (1, 2, 3, Underworld, etc.) I can say affirmatively that this Tomb Raider is far greater than some of the originals. It was a nice reincarnation and a good look into what made Lara, well.. Lara. The gameplay was exciting and the several opportunities to die if you screwed up really drove home the suspenseful vibe. But what am I saying? I'm a squid. None of you will take me seriously.
Since the new tomb raider has health regen to make things easier and lack of puzzles that encourages exploring then yes you are right ;)

You missed one, Lara survives ship wreck, swims ashore, but throughout the game if you fall in the ocean, cue cut scene of Lara cracking her skull against a rock and dieing every time, obviously another version of the invisible wall to keep the player penned in. I enjoyed much of the game play, but the game and story were not well planned out, I was also incredibly disappointed with the hunting, this after all was a survival theme, I was hoping for hunting to aid something like health, but all we get is xp, this became a cheat for me, I just hung around killing animals to gain xp for the skill points. Having said all that, I'm looking forward to the next one, hopefully they learn from this one.

A registered Coast Guard plane, allowed to take off and (since it's on a rescue mission) being followed by the Coast Guard itself accurately goes down and POOF nothing happens. No planes following, no rescues, they just go "Oh well, who cares!" NOBODY SENDS ANOTHER EXPEDITION. If they did, they would slowly figure out that there's something fucking wrong! That's like 100x10^15 (to the power of 15) sins. After that scene I literally closed the game.

The brain will remain active after death, even if large portions are destroyed, and basic motor functions will be in tact for several seconds.

Well, I don't get a single fuck about any of those "sins" or anything else negative ppl are claiming about TR. I love this game to pieces, enjoyed every single minute of it. To me it's BY FAR the best TR that was EVER made. Because Lara finally became human, got a personality and showed emotions. Finally she doesn't consist of tits. Now the player can relate to the character and be part of the story instead of just watching a generic figure from distance like it was all the time before. I so much appreciate this fundamental change in the TR series and I'm looking forward like crazy to the next title..! Hopefully the developers will never go back to that old dumb ass game design again.

You missed a sin from that bit when you first get the rope arrow and are forced to only look at one target, can only press one button while it's in black and white slow motion and the two guys that are shooting at you can't hit the side of a barn and you can't move Lara at all, I'm not sure how long this can go on for but I counted at least 3 minutes while I went to show someone in the next room that ridiculousness as well
