  • I'm black and modern shows have literally made me hate seeing people my own race because I know they're going to be written badly. Glad to see I'm not alone seeing the trend of black female characters always being aggressive or lesbian or both with being unlikable characters.

    @masshysteria3549@masshysteria354924 күн бұрын
    • Exactly!!! There's already the stupid angry black woman trope and it really is a bad luck when studios do this. By claiming that they're being inclusive they're actually perpetuating the negative stereotype, not just for black women but for lesbians as well. It's laziness and ignorance. I called out before how it's annoying when they just lazily rinse and repeat already established characters and give the crumbs to black people. Then when they do try to write original characters or race bend them, they make the black counterparts worse than the white ones were. We seriously need to unpack that.

    • @Alteori black women myself totally agree!!! These moronic twats always moan and groan about straight white guys but forget other races are straight too. Japan understands that traditional love family and values is what sells not giving everyone a piece of the pie just because especially when it'll never be enough for them anyway. Men and women need each other for survival support and love. Also blame korra she started this dark skin lesibian crap in the first place.

    • I'm also black and I agree I don't like that this has become the standard when it comes to female characters cause it is so boring cause they are so similar to each other they are. These types of female characters are so overused that whenever my friends and I watch shows are movies like this we have our own custom bingo cards. Cause it's the only way we can tolerate them. You also forgot bisexual if their not lesbian their bisexual but most of the time you'll see them going after women. This makes me wonder if these writers actually met a lesbian outside their activist group cause no lesbian act like this. Lesbians are usually pretty nice towards both males and females but the way they make these characters act you'd think lesbians just hate men. I also agree whenever they race change a character to black it just feels like leftovers and when they do bring back a black show it's a shell of its former self like good times and the proud family.

He said they should leave the wounded dinosaur and keep moving because staying put was dangerous, and she pretty much refused to. So him being a decent guy, he went against his better judgement so he could stay and help her. So he acted selflessly instead of doing the sensible thing and abandoning the person who was risking both their lives, and he even did this despite the fact that she had done nothing but talk down to him and treat him like crap, which led to him being blindsided and killed, and this ungrateful witch probably never gave Bob or his death a second thought afterward. But honestly, it's probably a good thing he died when he did. • I would like to point out that the "big spider" is literally the broodmother, one of the main bosses of the game that takes many tames and lots of time to get ready to fight. But they literally just kill it by themselves. Its stupid to bring out what is usually a groups first big boss that they work hard to prep for on episode 2 and kill it with 2 people. I think it's just insulting that they get away with this because she is a "strong and powerful character." Did they not talk with any actual fans before they made this.

The dangers of the wild dinosaurs, building a shelter and learning how to tame them. It probably would have been better for Helena to toughen her up this way with at least some early help from Bob. Then maybe we could believe that she could be somewhat capable against Gaius and his men.

The taming time invested just to build the properly specced dino army is one thing. But the time consuming, and convoluted process to actually not only ensure that your army is properly saddled, and that YOU are properly kitted out. But yet, ONLY two people are required to kill the Brood Mother? Give me a break.

Have her be forced to rely on people like a newb in a video game. Have her see past their strength and rise to be better. You can even keep her as a lesbian. In fact, I think having a more traditionally feminine lesbian character is an under utilised angle and could actually be interesting for once.

    • Exactly I said this a couple of times in response to other people. One of the best parts about Ark for me is the early survival part. Establishing a foothold. It would have been nice if she learned how to build a shelter, get food, run away from wild dinosaurs, and eventually tamed several before even meeting up with people who could do the same. Also it would have been cool to see everyone else how they started out. General Nerva already had a small Roman city built which can be cool but would have like to seen the early stages of his empire and conquests.

  • Story from the game: -Rockwell is actually a good guy at first, everybody respects him as a man of science and integrity. He's polite, fun, and a good friend to Helena. He only becomes an antagonist because of his growing paranoia and obsession over the futuristic technology. His old age and growing dementia get the better of him, causing Rockwell to do some terrible things in his poor mental state. He's a sympathetic character the surviving cast misses and holds regrets over. -Rockwell only joined Nerva because he had to for his research to progress, and because Nerva didn't give him much of a choice. Rockwell also never killed anybody or condoned barbaric acts and death until MUCH later in the story when his mental state was getting worse. -Helena is a friendly, likeable person with good sense. She also didn't make any enemies until the very end, becoming similarly respected by most tribes just like Rockwell and getting a big boost in reputation because of her friendship with him. -Helena arrives on the Island months prior to when she does on the show, before nerva builds his faction and before major conflicts break out. She's also not a genius, she recognizes a lot of the creatures thanks to her education but Helena learns ABOUT them and their actual behaviours/traits from the people on The Island. She's also a very weak fighter without guns(and modern guns do exist), until long after the story on The Island ends. -There was no united rebellion against Nerva, only scattered tribes fighting eachother for dominance. Nervas faction was just the one that came out on top. -John Dahkeya was never supposed to be on The Island. He never meets Helena or lives at the same time as her, and existed as part of the backstory of a futue location off of The Island. By the time any of the main cast get there, John is long dead and only one person around knew him. -Mei Yin never met Nerva until the end of the story on The Island. They'd both heard OF eachother, but only met at the climax of The Islands story. -Mei Yin was a loner who only interacted with people when she had to. She spent all her time taming and bonding with animals, and when Helena eventually met Mei Yin, Helena was only tolerated because Helena wanted to study Mei Yins dinosaurs. It took a long time for Mei Yin to see Helena as a friend, and Mei Yins closest real friend was a utahraptor she befriended very early in the story. -Several characters (Bob, Kor the Prophet, Henry Townsend, Johns adopted child, and the gladiatrix) were created for the show. Bob was a reference to "beach bobs" in the game, an in-joke for the Ark community, while the rest were created to change the story direction or provide filler. As a comment on the diversity of the show, the characters in the games story were already diverse. There were people from every place and time period. The main cast, save for Rockwell, Nerva and one other character that came much later, were entirely diverse through the whole games story. Something seems off for the tv series though, basically any character that can be seen as a "white male" in the show is portrayed as a villain, psycho, mysoganist or delusional prophet. All of these characters were sensible and mostly good in the original story. Even Nerva wasn't a villain, he was just the antagonist. There was a lot of good he did and infrastructure he built on The Island, and he united most of the populace. I pointed out the character assassination for Rockwell and Nerva and got banned from the official Ark Discord server for racism/discrimination. Another note on the show that I have is the megalodon from Episode 1 was eaten by a Leedsichthys. Leedsichthys irl and in-game were filter feeding fish like modern whales, with no aggression and no weaponry for hunting.

    • The fact you got banned for pointing out their own lore is crazy to me. Its like the show wasnt even made by anyone who knew anything about the game at all or, more likely, you can see the influence of DEI bs that is plaguing gaming and media in general. I liked Helena in the game, being a dino nerd myself, her dossiers are some of my favourite things to find. I did not find her likeable in the show. Not because she is a woman, not because of her sexual orientation but because of the way she is written. It's bad. And the other characters, as you pointed out, are much the same. Dull, poorly written and clearly there to fill out DEI boxes. I hate that I dont like this show for all the time I spent in the game. I was so excited with the list of actors they brought in for voices. Even Mei Yin, my favourite character, the fucking beast queen, voiced by the beautiful and wonderful Michelle Yeoh, was completely butchered. I thought to myself it would be so hard for this series to fail. BUT IT DID. Rockwell, like you said, completely taken away from amazing character development . I wanted to see Nerva build up his tribe..but nope. we got this garbage. And thats not to say anything about the extremely cheap animation quality...Even the dinos look like shit. The fan fiction written, before the lore came out , on the Ark steam forums were better quality than this crap. Lazy, DEI bs, once again.

  • Writers really seem to fail to build up characters naturally nowadays. They just throw them into the deep end of a situation and give them dialogue that is far too on the nose in most cases. For example this MC I assume is suppose to care for animals and doesn't want to hurt them BUT she's just been chased by a massive shark and I assume has no idea what is going on. Rather than worry about the Dodo, shouldn't she be asking where am I? Who are you? Okay her caring for animals is a character trait but build on it slowly through out the story and the best approach is to SHOW not tell me she has that trait. Show her being a vet as her backstory, put her morals to the test with two different animals dying and she can only save one. A story is suppose to challenge a characters morality NOT to always enforce that they are always in the right (in most cases). Even children's stories were made to pose difficult questions to both the audience and the reader. That is why Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan and so on last the test of time. They have an amazing world to fall in love but are always challenging the MC's morality. A character should never be the same person at the end of the story. They need to come away with something to improve themselves.

I'm sorry but just because a character doesn't react the way you want them to react does not mean it's bad writing. As for stories always have to challenge morality of the characters, it depends on what we are talking about.
