The world finals of the VGC 2014 Masters Rank.
Watch Jeudy Azzarelli battle Se Jun Park and his famous Pachirisu in the Finals of the 2014 Pokémon World Championships.
I still think Ice Punching that Chomp in game 2 was the safer play..

  • It's important to consider why this strategy worked, cause a lot of people take this as a "you can win with any pokemon you want if you are good enough" lesson when it's not really that simple. He didn't win because pachirisu is secretly good, neither he chose it cause it was one of his favorites. it worked because it was unexpected at first he wanted to use an amoonguss for his team, since it offered the support it needed for the playstyle of this team. problem is, everyone was used to ammoonguss. Safty googles were extremely common and people ran lots of counters against the mushroom. So instead of having to deal with that, Se Jun decided to look for a pokemon that could do what amoonguss does without having to depend on powder moves... and the only pokemon that really fits that role was pachirisu (while togekiss gets thunderwave, nuzzle has the advantage of 100% acuracy, and pachirisu is inmune to electrict type attacks thanks to volt absorb, wich was important for him to redirect electric types meant for his gyarados, while togekiss would be weak to them too). He really didn't choose it for some short of preference torwards the pokemon, it trully was the pokemon that fitted his team the best. of course, pachirisu is a completly inferior version to amoonguss in almost everyway, but the fact that nobody expected it meant that nobody planned on how to deal with it. this is why despite a bunch of people trying to replicate the strategy, it never really worked. the moment it stoped being unexpected it lost the one thing it had going for it. Not to take credit away from Se Jun, only an amazing player could have made this work, but my point is that this isn't really a case of "you can win with any pokemon you want", him choosing pachirisu was a very thought out process that was done in order to get the best possible chance of winning.

    • Rather, it was a case of being clever. You must know what the meta is like, and play around with it. If something on your team is so common that it's being countered, look for something else that can fill the same space. Study the meta, see what is popular and what is being countered and how. Then, use that knowledge to build your team. And do not let anyone learn of your plans. If they know you're team long before the tournament, you will lose the edge of surprise. This is a strategy game.

      @Skystarry75@Skystarry753 жыл бұрын

  • Just a reminder for people finding this match: Sejun didn't have Pachirisu in his team because it was his favorite (though it is now). He went for what was best for his team at the time. In the post-game interview, he said he chose Pachirisu because it was the best user of Follow Me at the time for move redirection. He chose it over the more popular Amoonguss with Rage Powder, which can be ignored by Grass-types and the Safety Goggles item, which people had been running just to counter it.

    @aquartertwo@aquartertwo3 жыл бұрын
    • He probably could’ve run eviolite togetic with follow me, protect, thunder wave and any other move. (Maybe healing move). Would’ve been way more bulky and would’ve had insane type advantage with only rock slide being effective against it.

      @canadianmedic4341@canadianmedic43418 ай бұрын
    • @@canadianmedic4341Keep in mind Sejun also ran Gyarados. Having a volt absorb redirector put immense pressure on the opponent because it forced them to deal with Pachirisu when they wanted to take out the more fearsome fish.

      @bmac4@bmac47 ай бұрын
    • @canadianmedic4341 keep in mind another reason he ran Patchuisu is because of moves like super fang and nuzzle, since Amoomgus is a popular pokemon, people use taunt which would prevent all those status moves you mentioned, but doesn't prevent nuzzle or super fang

I'm not a competitive pokemon player, (even though I want to get into it), but I can see Pachirisu isn't a very popular competitive Pokemon. However, I think this video shows that you can make any Pokemon viable. It just takes a good trainer.

Out of all the volt absorb pokes there were in the XY metagame Pachirisu easily had was the best poke for his team as it had the most utility. It's not like he used a shit pokemon and made it work, as someone already said, there was a role to be filled, and it just turned out that the bulky squirrel from hell fit it well :)

Also we got another two pokemon in the back to defeat and distrupt this lead too. It might or might not mattered back then , but actually , bullet punch on gardevoir in game two would have picken up the knock out most of time , sejun just got lucky on the damage roll .... :/ Even Though , im actually happy sejun won this championship , it showed that every pokemon can win with good manouvers and clever strategy... Or "competitive is no place for soft favorites, he doesn't like pachirisu, he likes to win" but I think that what we should be praising here is how clever was the use of pachirisu in the first place! What brought him the victory was at the end, his well thought out strategy, which came after analysing the meta a choosing an odd, yet ideal pokémon for this occasion in particular. I'll say that my favourite move in this pachirisu set would be nuzzle, just because I didn't realize until now that it worked even after taunt since it's technically a physical move! But the whole set was amazingly pulled out here.

    • Singles is a broken format. Nintendo makes decisions in game mechanics and aspects to gear it for Doubles. There wouldn't be enough profit and it would be way too difficult to establish the correct competitive atmosphere. Let's also not forget how broken Singles is without tiers/PBV systems. If you want competitive Singles, go play Pokemon Showdown, Pokemon Online, or PokeBattle.

      @Ketchi000@Ketchi0009 жыл бұрын
    • Ketchi The real answer is a VGC battle last 15minutes max. and a single 1v1 can last more than 30minutes. So it's easier to organize a tournament in VGC. And not single is broken or vgc more competitive olol

      @ThomasBrillard@ThomasBrillard9 жыл бұрын
    • Créma thom Have you ever tried playing VGC/Doubles in the way that Nintendo has it set up, and compared it to 6v6 Singles of any format (including Smogon, etc.)? I will admit that time consumption is an aspect to consider, but it is a definite fact that the game has been geared for VGC/Doubles, and is therefore naturally more balanced in it. Smogon/PO/PB exist because of how broken 6v6 Singles is, because otherwise they would have almost no reason to exist and far more people would want to play with Nintendo SIngles rule sets.

  • You deserve that championship spot, you go! I don't respect people that use the same exact op Uber/Legendaries in battles. ANYONE can use and train op legendaries with 500/600 base stats and win. But a true champion is a person skilled enough to use the pokemon THEY like and are their own personal favorites to win, to figure out their own strategy and not just rely on pure op stats to win. THAT is the mark of a true, ultimate champion. I'm on the pachirisu bandwagon.

    @ShadowGamingXxx@ShadowGamingXxx9 жыл бұрын
    • It's a world championship so of course everyone will go for the strongest options available. Condemning them just because you're some hipster who prefers lesser known things is pathetic.

      @jordanollie8211@jordanollie82119 жыл бұрын
    • Jordan Ollie in no way is it pathetic. Just using a strong base stat team comp thats proven to work lacks a certain..appeal. if someone can use pokes not typically known for competitive use and shine a light on them i would definitely say they understood the mechanics of the game better and played to them.

      @HeyyItsDalee@HeyyItsDalee9 жыл бұрын
    • Jordan Ollie It's not the fact that everybody uses them and its better because they're stronger, it's the fact of winning with not only the hard work and dedication factor but the factor of actually being legit, using pkmon's that aren't only used for their power. I mean, it's pathetic TO ME and all others that actually ENJOY the game and want to find challenge in it. It's just my personal opinion. If winning just because you have the stronger team is your thing, then you go for it. But just remember if you do win, you may be the strongest, but not THE BEST.

      @ShadowGamingXxx@ShadowGamingXxx8 жыл бұрын
    • ShadowGamingXxx I get what you're saying but still; in tournaments, people are naturally attracted to the strongest options. Their primary goal is to win. Not to appease hipsters. In Se Jun's case, Pachirisu was a "strongest option" as it was the bulkiest Follow Me user allowed under last year's VGC restrictions. On top of that, he had standard mons like Garchomp and Talonflame.

      @jordanollie8211@jordanollie82118 жыл бұрын
    • ShadowGamingXxx to quote reperfan4: " Everyone taking to the comments to hold this up as some pillar of originality and attempting to undermine the competitive scene by treating his use of Pachirisu as some kind of backing for the "just use what you want, every pokemon is good!" mentality. He didn't use Pachirisu because he has some kind of personal attachment to it, because he was trying to show up the meta by being "original," or because Pachirisu is a good Pokemon. He used Pachirisu because, while Pachirisu only does a slim few things well, it was those things his team needed. His use of Pachirisu was calculated and strategic, not emotional. You wanna prove any Pokemon is good? Win a world championship with Cosplay Pikachu. "
