Today we will talk about how each of the cast members of “The Wolf” were chosen by the lead director to play their respective roles and the stories behind each of them to make the drama a great one. Xiao Zhan, Darren Wang, and Li Qin all worked very hard to make “The Wolf” the success it is today. At the end we also discuss what the director said regarding whether or not there will be “The Wolf Season 2”.

Darren Wang is my favorite in this drama, perfect role for him. I don't want sad endings. I hope there will be Season 2 where the Wolf and his lady will reunite and be happy.
You know they left it open for that possibility. So you can have Xiao Zhan come across their reincarnated souls in wolf form and travel about with them and talk to them and have yo be looking over his shoulder so no one notices...when them eventually growing up and maybe their spirits stepping free of their wolf form as humans to be together or in an alternate version they can only meet at sunset as humans but then return to wolf form by day with Xiao Zhan watching over both til dome great feet is accomplished and finally they gain full human status and can be together! Xiao Zhan is the link to hope and possibilities and is journeying on forward so you never know! I pe do ally think it would be cool yo at least have an OVA film like that (which Japan often does at the red of a series!) or even do an edited down two or three movie version to sell internationally to show in theatres in international markets. Then they could also do fan meets in some of the countries it's shown in! (I can hope anyway!) the actors don't get paid til these movies show and the more views, likes and airtime the initial showing gets the better. Unless you've been acting a long time and reslly established yourself in many shows they don't put royalties in the contract so if anyone got that in it was probably only Darren who had acted with this director in several other rolls. So thank goodness this series was really highly anticipated and lil brother Xiao Zhan now has millions and millions of fans in China and in countries all around the world who were also eagerly awaiting it to add to those numbers. Both Xiao Zhan and Darren still have movies made in the past that have been on shelves and homely the success of this show will get them to release those and get more new projects coming in. We need as many good shows as we can get during a pandemic! Daren and Zli Qin have both been in other shows with Xiao Xhan and supported him both then and as a friend since, including when Xiao Zhan had competitors paying the black PR group to spin negative propaganda about him, create ficticoius events to use fir headlines, use their minions yo amplify their negative comments and hack both him and his studio and get others under their thumb to do thinks to try and hinder his progress. They stayed loyal as friends during all of that so I think both Daren and Li Qin will pick up a lot of Xiao Zhan fans for many reasons after this show. Those who also hope to see Xiao Zhan in more roles with Darren or Li Qin on later projects and see him work with this Director. I've like each of the directors who worked with Xiao Zhans but my three favorite so far are the director of the a Untamed, the director of the messenger and the director of the Wolf. It's also fun to listen yo the directors and casting agents who have worked with Xiao Zhan talk about why they chose him, what stood out about him then and what is was like working with them. It's always very revealing (and fun because some literally wax on poetically but also you really see how well they get Xiao Zhan end enjoyed working with him and as in this directors case mention how "he surpassed their expectations". Each you can tell sure now fans themselves. The director of the Untamed and the messenger have spoke out on his behalf multiple times before the whole negative propaganda spin began and during it. The director of one in particular comments on something they all mention in one way or another but this one said it best "to work with Xiao Zhan is to see a pure soul. The task is to capture that on film and with Xiao Zhan you can. There is like a light and it shines bright. Yes...it is something very rare". Each one of these directors used a different style but one thing they all have in common is a use of closeups to capture subtle emotion and a belief in letting the actor bring his own technique and observations he has made to the role. In Xiao Zhans case he's one of those people who will work 24/7 on a role or a scene to ensure he does his best and give the director what their vision is send help as a team member to do everything in his power to ensure they all succeed. They all three commented on this as well. There's also wn author who knows one of them who commented "there's no one I'd rather have than Xiao Zhan for my story (he meant if it got made into a series or books) for obvious reasons". Many people interpreted it that this was because of Xiao Zhans popularity but he later clarified that it was because of the things one of Xiao Zhans directors had said to him over a meal in talking about Xiao Zhan. About his commitment to the work and that his role match as closely as possible the cannon work and the overall tone of the story as well as the directors vision. There have always been rumors that the author of the Untamed (who altered her cannon story several times) used Xiao Zhan as a model for the character of Wei Ying and the was a fan herself. Which is pribsbly just a rumor but supposedly she was consulted sbout the casting of the main characters and approved. The author who mentioned he'd like Xiao Zhan to star in the show if his book was turned into a film or series also supposedly joked later in that same event that his next work was going to be written with him in mind! So that means more roles coming up! There is one role that he was already supposed to be doing that got halted at the beginning of the pandemic that I'm hoping they still end up doing. It's a big cast with a lot of key make roles but also big budget do I doubt they are doing snything on it til they are sure movie audiences are back in full. What I really wish he would do next is a big action thriller! I think Xiao Xhan could be China's next Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks with big action scenes! That's on his bucket list of roles as well!
Darren was the best part of this drama for me, he stole every scene he was in and he had that strong, fierce aura of a war god which suited him so wonderfully. there wasn't A MOMENT of wooden acting from his part, he was THAT great 🥺💕💕

That’s true and I love that fact that from the beginning up to the end I didnt suffere from 2nd male lead syndrome,Their acting as a couple is magneficent until the end although its a bittersweet ending.
I don't know how CHINESE FILM/DRAMA awards system works BUT Darren definitely deserves the equivalent of the Hollywood academy award ..give him the golden whatever its called in China for BEST ACTOR also they deserve BEST couple!

I agree. He really deserved an award here. His role was very difficult, probably even for a decorated actor, but he did an amazingly splendid job! I was mesmerized by his acting, he never used big powerful emotions or movements, no shouting or raising of voice only subtle changes of facial expressions was all it took for him to send the character's emotion across. Very subtle but very effective expressions.
Frankie Chen: *"He had a wild and manly aura that other actors just didn't have"* Damn true. He gives of such manly vibes that it draws the eye to him in every scene he is in. His acting prowess is phenomenal. There are very few actors like Darren in the Chinese acting industry. He is a rare gem that deserves a lot more appreciation and accolades. 🥰

I have not watched the whole show. Whatever clips I have seen so far, I am so mesmerized by Darren Wang’s performance. What a performance! His screen presence is also very mesmerizing.

The actors and actresses in the drama performed wonderfully. Darren Wang’s role was a difficult one but he was perfectly in character and I love Li Qin’s performance, a beautiful serene face with many heart felt expressions😊
I agree everyone did a good job! I love Xiao Xhan in this role and both Li Qin and Darren fit their roles as well but also I really liked several of the minor characters! I also really liked the director on this end the setting as well as the rougher portrayal of Daren and Xiao Zhan. Li Qin also stood out between them andvdidnt get lost as just one more carbon copy of the other females which I was really pleased by! ⭐️👏👏👏⭐️
Agree. Darren Wang's talent and charisma was so palpable throughout the show. Whenever he is in the scene everyone else disappeared.

Wow! Thank you so much for your response! It is so cool to hear from you! I am a big fan of "The Wolf" and have really loved the show! I think all of the cast members did such a great job and it stands out as a unique really interesting story and I love not only the portrayal of all of the main characters but even some of the minor characters really stood out for me and I really loved them! Each of the characters in this show really got to stand out and develop their characters more fully then you see in many costume dramas. I also loved the pacing the director used, the way the story and the history of the characters was laid out, as well as the setting and even the overall feel and coloration of the series! The only way I felt they missed the mark was by A) Not getting the show onto international platforms like Netflix (which I still hope they do! So it gains many more new fans who wouldn't even know to look for it otherwise) and by B) Not creating specialty and promotional items (for fans in China as well as for International fans)....(particularly since "the Wolf" was released so close to Christmas!) Any show Xiao Zhan is in automatically has a big international fan base and even though Christmas isn't celebrated in every country, there's always a market for cool specialty items on a great show. In the case of "the Wolf" it incorporates well loved animals with a lot of lore and legends around them and so something like a stuffed wolf pet (with "the Wolf" films logo or name on the tag) would have been a great gift for kids and adults to give for the holidays, as well as a DVD gift set that includes a key chain in it with a baby wolf and an adult wolf dangling from it or a mask like Xiao Zhan wears in the film with "the wolf" logo tag on it or a wolf paw print tag on it or his characters name or character on it! This would have been so cool (cause everyone is very much wearing masks around the globe and you might as well have cool ones to wear). "The Wolf" has so much potential for cool specialty items! Even just as a T-shirt with the wolves and main characters on it. Especially making these available for purchase at the holidays! If there already are specialty items like this for "the Wolf" please let me know and if there isn't then pass that idea along. Particularly pass the request along to put "the Wolf" on Netflix. I am one of the people who wrote to Netflix and encouraged them to put the Untamed on their platform but others around the world in other countries did the same for other platforms as well. Funimation and crunchy roll were both interested in putting the anime version of the Untamed on their platform but somehow that didn't happen and instead one of them ended up with Heavens Official Blessing with poor subtitles on it, which lessens its chance of success. On the other hand, the Anime version of the Untamed had great subtitles but didn't get placed with them because the people with the anime never followed up on the transaction. As a result of Xiao Zhans popularity in international markets, it benefits everyone in a good show like "the Wolf" with him in it, to have specialty items that can be marketed internationally and have the show placed on international platforms. Because it furthers everyones fan base to a broader market, in particular for future shows you each might be in! (To get an idea of just how much of an impact specialty items can have on expanding stars fan bases and show brand fan bases and their longevity, you only have to look at the Avenger, Marvel or DC franchises to understand the scope of this.) Just something to keep in mind, in case they do a DVD gift set of "the Wolf" or another season of "the Wolf" or they do an OVA movie version of what happens after the last scenes of the last episode of "the Wolf" series. In a Japan for example, they often do an "after the series" single movie, if fans all wish to know what could have happened next or wish would happen next. Sometimes they also just do a short condensed version of a series in a one, two or three movie boxed set, that can then also be shown in theatres and viewed in less time than the whole series. Then they often pick up a whole new audience of people who didn't have the time or attention span to watch the whole series and even many who just want want to see it again on the big screen They always use the same actors on these, because it's usually the love of the actors as those characters that has spawned the desire for the OVA, as much as the story itself. There is actually a theatre group here who was interested in that, if they ever come out with an OVA movie version of the "the Untamed" or "the Wolf" (*but only if it consists of the same actors as in both series currently).

Fans of Darren Wangs, Fans of Xiao Zhans and fans of the LI Qin and I think they have knocked it out of the block by doing a great job!!! This show already has so many fans around the world that are loving it and the cast. They should have created a whole specialty line of toys and collectibles for this show in time for Chistmas because there would be stuffed Wolf toys, action figures, a Wolf version of a board game like risk, a video game with lots of wolves and I'd personally buy a replica bell that Li Qin had and that pretty feather blue hairpiece she had! (I yes I'm serious!) I think China is just missing the mark on specialty product marketing. They need to get some people to check out specialty marketing in Japan and the US so they can get it going there. In this show I'm liking all of the cast and even found myself liking several of the other male and females in some of the minor roles. In a costume drama these lesser characters often get lost but in this one they also stand out. I personally love it when a whole cast stands out and a story line has something special. I like everything about the Wolf! All of the cast, Xiao Zhan, Darren Wang and LI Qin are doing a great job and I would definately watch a season two if they made one! I love Xiao Zhan in this role!!! Do what I did, write to Netflix or any platform you want one of Xiao Zhans shows on and point out the growing popularity of costume dramas in other markets world wide. Platforms are very open to adding shows if viewers ask for it.

I love the comparison of Xiao Zhan and Darren Wang as the white wolf and the black wolf! I think Xiao Xhan as a pure white or silver wolf is so perfect! Xiao Zhan has been illuminated with an inner pure light from day one. Beneath that bright smile and energy he also has many layers and true depth. I noticed it in the first interview I saw him in while he was still on X-FIRE. He came jogging over to the interview after a performance, still hot but smiling that dazzling bright smile. As the interviewer spoke to him he was so genuine and candid. When the interviewer told him he had been picked as the fan favorite and also ranked in a national poll, Xiao Zhan looked like he thought he was kidding him. He immediately pulled out his phone and started scrolling thru it and his eyes enlarge as he goes "wow...WOW!!?!?!" And then he looks up stunned at the interviewer and says "How do all of these people even know who I am?!?! I'm just Xiao Zhan!?!" He was soooo adorable and funny. Apparently he was stunned by the numbers of voters who chose him and by all the comments and congratulations on his social media from people he had never even heard of. As the interviewer went on to ask him questions he came to one that it was clear Xiao Zhan had given a lot of thought to, long before he ever auditioned for X-FIRE. When asked what it would mean to him if he won on X-FIRE and went on to become a star, he said "opportunity". He went on to seriously explain this but concluded with what to me was the most important. He pointed out he wanted to make a positive difference in the world. Saying there were needs all around us everyday but as people got older and were more in a position to help others in need, they often forget. They look the other way, they walk by those in need of turn a blind eye. Sometimes it's because they are so busy with work, in other cases it's because they are afraid or they don't know how to help. As one man he or anyone can only do so much but together with others, a lot can be accomplished. He wanted to use his voice and his celebrity status to speak out on the needs that exist, where others can't speak out or their voices are not being heard and inspire others to help where there are needs, in whatever way they can. As I listened to him I realized Xiao Zhan was soooo much more than a singer, an actor and would go on to be so much more than a brand spokesperson or a model or an entertainer. He was a problem solver and a man with a lot of common sense, faith, hope and such goodness at heart. He wasn't going into this career just to support himself and help out his parents or to make a name for himself or any of the perks a star or celebrity can earn. He was going into this career to have a voice that could create positive change and make a positive difference in the world. If you look at Xiao Zhan in everything he does and everywhere he goes and how he handles everything. From the beginning he inspired and encouraged others and in all things he try's to stay positive and impart joy. He puts a lot of thought into the things he does, how he does them. He cares about doing things the right way and honestly try's to take the high road, even when others go low or try to undermine or use him. He is like a bright light that shines in the dark. Despite the darkness others try to cast or surround him with, he only shines brighter thru the storm. Darkness will unfortunately often be attracted to Light, especially when it shines so purely as it does with Xiao Zhan but the light can also break thru the darkness and sweep it away. Xiao Zhan has so much talent, works so hard, so diligently and is such a great team player but he has so much more that defines him. He has such strength of character, he is resilient, persevering, determined, smart, caring, helpful, respectful, loves learning and really puts so much though into the path he treds and who he wants to be. Xiao Zhan etched himself on my heart that day I saw that first interview and he has never once disappointed me. He has done everything he said he would do that day and gone on to accomplish so much more in such a short time. He is both a great role model and an inspiration. He is also a down to earth guy who is very much still "just Xiao Zhan". When an interviewer once pointed out to Xiao Zhan that he was so good looking, Xiao Zhan blushed and obviously felt awkward. The interviewer said "on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest, where would you rate your looks on the scale and he seriously thought for a moment and then said "a six...if I've got on a nice suit and my hairs styled that day". Xiao Zhan sees himself as just a regular guy, taking on a career he is prepared to work his hardest at, looking forward to acting in a diverse range of roles and having on opportunity to sing songs and create music that imparts joy and touches the hearts of others but ultimately these are vehicles to give him the voice and exposure to help others and make a positive difference in the world. I admire and respect Xiao Zhans talent but also him as a man. I support him for everything he stands for and for every challenge and obstacle he has stood up to and moved beyond and overcome, continuing to move forward putting one foot in front of the other. He is the only person I have ever called myself a fan of and I am proud to call myself his fan.

I found her part overacted and unconvincing but Darren was amazing.
Darren did an amazing job. Would love to see him more in these type of drama series! Finished watching it yesterday and I plan to rewatch it again since it was super good and heart breaking
Darren Wang was phenomenal. This was a spectacular drama. I binge watched the entire series over this weekend. I can't remember crying so much, but at the same time loving the story so much. And Darren's smile ..... oh my. A megawhatt smile.

OMG!!!!! By far one of the best drama series EVER! The actors are amazing, the screen writing and script is spot on, and the flow is perfect! I am on ep 16 and I will want more. This series is a great binge watching drama. Thank you for the decision to finally release it after a long anticipated wait. Love love love it. Two male leads, Wang Daly and Xiao Zhang, are amazing in their roles and a beautiful female lead Li Qin, can act will make this drama the best in a long time. Congratulations!

I was very impressed with all of the fine actors. They made it seem as if they felt everything their characters went through and suffered a lot. I haven't seen Darren Wang before so I was very impressed. Xiao Zhan is wonderful. Everyone was great in this.

I agree! I love Xiao Zhan in this role! He is so good! I also really liked Daren and Li Qin and think they did a good job and I love how the director chose their males who both had a strong presence but different energies and also used that to change the tempo and pace of the film.The director pointed out that was intentional orchestration on her part. When the pace started slowing down (as it started doing before Xiao Xhan first comes on scene) she brought him in to speed the pace back up, bring in more action and color and wow that really worked! She does that through the series. She also really reflected the characteristics of the wolf in so many things Darren did even in key scenes with the coloration, action and speed of the sequence. In the end he went from innocence in the wild to a very vicious master who trained him harshly to be an assassin and kill on command and be the leader of a group of assassin who are only loyal to him and throughout the story he tests his loyalty to ensure his humanity is not bleeding through and even reminds him of the cage he was once kept in and the hand that feeds him and his loyalty to the pack, not to Li Qin. It's subtle and not overstated but I live how it's woven into everything and the difficulty he has escaping who he is.
It's really rare to find a drama that has a cast that fits their characters so well! As for a second season, if there is one I would still watch it but in my opinion, I feel that it should just stay where it is, only 1 season. I've mentioned this everywhere I go if I commented about the ending of the 🐺... 😅, but I don't think it's sad, it's more bittersweet. Foreshadowings were everywhere from the trailer and the plot setup. The ending could've been different but I personally thought it was befitting of how the story was setup. It's still an awesome drama tho! Don't let unfavorable endings distract you from the realism that surrounds it. Put yourself in the characters shoes. If I was li qin's character, I would've done the same thing. Saved him once from death, do it again.

Yes, I agree... Bittersweet.. Even though it wasn't a happy ending but I'm okay with it also. It was more in a sense, a realistic one... In reality, life doesn't make any promises. But whether the reasons or whatever happens, like you said if I was Ma Zhaixing, I would've made the same decision in the end if I had to do it all over again... Definitely a bittersweet ending....
I agree. This is the best ending for them given the circumstances. Lord Bo was already dying and he was so weak. Who knew if he can successfully save Fourth Prince. MZX mentioned it already that she will be alone even after he passes and not move on. Given this, she made the ultimate sacrifice to achieve Lord Bo's dream of rescuing fourth prince as well as limiting all the casualties of the war. I mean, it could have been worst. She could have lost Ji Chong and Lord Bo if Jin Troop marched in. So yes, they were finally free from humanly expectations of them. MZX was the royal princess. She had alot of pressure on her shoulders to carry on and make the best decision for the kingdom all the time. I think she knew she couldn't handle it once Lord Bo is dead. And for Lord Bo, even when he was so tired, exhausted, and sick... everyone looked up to him to lead. Finally, at the end, they escaped the humans and we're back on Wolf Hunt Mountain....away from all the monsters below the mountain who just wanted power. Oh, and with her sacrifice, the kingdom was able to achieve peace. So everyone wins. Happy ending

Yes I've really loved everything about the show! It's unique, interesting, has lots of action and intrigue with a love Transkei with two hot guys with different energies (which is what the director was going for) and if has baby wolves and big ferocious wolves! It's definately a hit for me!

As the third point of the Darren, Li Qin star crossed love triangle he was to have a presence and a different energy and when he came on change the tempo to ensure the show didn't drag or pick up the pace in points like how it starts to drag a bit before he first comes on scene and he so accomplishes all of that. If you notice there's kind of a seesaw or back and forth pull in the film when a change of pace on and off through it. Each time Xiao Zhan comes in the pace and action picks up and it seems more colorful. I liked the technique and Xiao Zhan did a great job in the role. There's also continuously done really key dialogue that are hints, backstory and foreshadowing to the overall plot and storyline that I didn't really catch and after someone pointed it out I went back before I was far in and rewatched sections of it to pay more attention to this and I was glad I did. I like how the director seeded many clues in it but not so specific you know all the answers and I like how in so many ways things that happen to Darren and things he does from the beginning to the end all have to do with characteristics of the wolf. It's the basis of the many problems between he and Li Qin that even she doesn't get. I'm still not at the end yet myself but I've found many really interesting characteristics of this directors style as well as the story itself and how it's portrayed that I really like. I also like many of the minor characters and they themselves stand out as well. This was also true of the Untamed as well. Both directors allow all of the characters, even the minor ones to shine and really make something of their role. I also like how Li Qin really stands up well in terms of presence to both Darren and Xiao Zhan and does'nt simply get lost as just one more carbon copy of the other females in the show. Both Darren and Xiao Zhan still have shows that have been sitting on the shelf for years and so I'm hoping the success of this show will free up more of both of their shows in the near future. Xiao Zhans millions of fans have brought viewers and likes to the show but also new fans to Darren and Li Qin they would have never had if little brother hadn't grown in his industry since initially filming this. The director has smiled and pointed out how well that has worked out and how this was an unexpected benefit for the show. Although Darren and Li Qin both have fan bases those extra millions and millions of viewers is appreciated because especially since many of them will also become their fans to. Both Farren and Zli Qin have supported Xiao Zhan before he could be called a star and as friends continued to support him when he was being attacked by negative propaganda being spun by the black PR group and amplified by their minions and cohorts as well as him and his studio being hacked. They were loyal friends and associates when others ran and hid behind closed doors. Xiao Zhan was really still a newbie when this was filmed but most people don't realize the Wolf, the Untamed, Joy of Life and several other shows, including another one with Darren and another one with Li Qin all kind of overlapped and during most of these Xiao Zhan was still performing with XNINE and even in court during part of the time trying to get out of his contract because he was already so overwhelmed with fans and work obligations, yet lacking in simple resources needed like scheduling and rebooking assistance, logistics support and security to keep crowds back so he could get quickly into events, film shootings and flights. He was literally often taking public transportation and rides with others going his way, to get places to and from mountains and out of the way forests, while also learning new routines for XNINE performances, brand events, videos, photo shoots and doing multiple different rolls all at the same time and yet in each roll, just like in this one, he simply shines and nails it. One of the moments I love in the Wolf was when Xiao Zhan came dropping in with that black mask on and slid under that horse then back up on the other side with that rope in his hand, ready to lasso that run away princess and tie a bow around her. One of my favorite scenes with Darren is when he comes in thru the rain with that cool black hood up as the leader of the assassins to do his masters bidding and pulls out the sword and cuts them down (before Li Qin sees him). Although that does start the star crossed nature of their relationship and compounds it after she pushed him away earlier (to save him but he didn't realize that, so he fell into the hands of a very ruthless master). Both of those scenes were very memorable for me and really reflect the difference in energy the two have and brought to their roles.

Just finished this drama in 60 hours and I am emotionally empty. I went through an emotional roller coaster and I feel so heartbroken. Coming into this I had heard that it’s a tragic show and I expected them not to get their HEA. I didn’t expect it to be this good and I hung onto every word! I am so amazed by Darren Wang’s portrayal of Wolfie and Lord Bo because he is such a dynamic character and he nailed it. His totally embodied the whole entirety of this character inside and out.

I know it's a good drama when I come back to search for behind the scene clips and when I come watch clips of certain scenes over and over again. It's like I didn't want the drama to end 🥺

this was the first c-drama i’ve watched all the way through. the other ones i’ve seen have the typical damsel in distress female lead, but this one was different. the female lead was strong, and while annoying at times, i really loved her. darren wing was amazing in this, and i hope he acts in more dramas in the future. i loved this drama because of the strong characters. if anyone has any lowe strong female lead c-dramas (preferably historical or costume genre), please recommend them!

Yes he definately stole the show for me! I thought everyone did a good job including many of the minor characters as well as Li Qin and Darren. They all fit their roles and played them well and I really like the director of this. She had a different style of the director of the untamed (whose work I love!) and of many costume dsrsmas I've seen (thank goodness because many of those just all seem kind of the same). However her pacing and how she used Xiao Xhans energy to pick up the pace as it begins to slow down in the story, orchestrating the pace in a similar wsy to music and lighting (which Xiao Zhan obviously really got) and using light and dark and color to show the change of Darren's character from innocence in the wild to the change of a trained assassin who is a leader over other assassins, trained harshly by a vicious master who now commands his more primal nature that has been honed to kill, loyal only to him and continually tested to ensure that, even using Li Qin to ensure he is not losing his edge or loyalty, to the humanity Li Qin touches. I also like how throughout the whole film she uses wolf behaviors, characteristics and analogies through things Darren does, how he acts, the way he attacks, the colorations and yet it's done subtly.
My favorite two scenes that were very memorable yo me was in Xiao Zhans case when he drops into the scene in that mask then slides under that horse in that cool move and came out on the other side holding a rope like he's going to lasso that run away princess and tie her up with a bow! He was so cool in that scene! Then in Darren's case for me it was when he comes into that scene in the rain in that black outfit and hood with that sword in his hand end the elder is killed and they write the joins name in blood to implicate them and Li Qin comes out but never realized who was really there. Everything was dark rainy black and grey except fir the blood. Those two seperate sequences to me are the first real feeling you get of the difference energies at play in the two key males. Three points of light on the triangle with Li Qin in between the the two, each with their own energy and presence and the director wanted those different energies. I hope Xiao Zhan gets yo act later in another show with Darren and snother one with Li Qin and in something else this director does. Xiao Zhan has been in snother show with both Darren and Ki Qin in the past and the work well together. Plus they both supported him before anyone yet called him a star and afterwards when he was getting attacked with negative propaganda by the black PR group and amplified by their minions, hacked by them personally and at his studio and their cohorts did crazy stuff like attacking his coworkers, friends and associates. Darren and Li Qin were loyal friends during that instead of running, hiding behind closed doors or attempting to block his path. I like them for that! Everyone in the film deserves a round of applause including that director because thank goodness it was an interesting story and something unique. I like costumes dramas and historical dramas but in looking for one that compares to the a Untamed, so often others pale in comparison and actors seem all so lifeless wnd similar to sll the other characters around them in the show! Especially the females but in this show they esch stand out seperstely and unique, each bringing something unique to the show and not getting lost amongst the characters, yet like the director of the Untamed this director also did a good job of letting even the minor characters develop their roles and stand out.
Their hardwork really paid off. I would love to see a Season 2.
I agree! In a way the end was left open for another season and I'd definately watch it! They could also do an OVA film (as they so often do in aspen). To shaw the "what if" or "what could be" that didn't get shown in the series. Maybe we will get Xiao Zhan traveling about with baby wolves, after our star crossed couple reincarnated into wolf forms who will one day transform back into humans when they grow up...or who can only see one another in their human form from sunset to dawn and then must transform back to wolves at dawn, who can only become fully human again by some great feat. With Xiao Zhan being the only one who realizes who they are and keeping them near trying to keep them from losing themselves completely in their wolf forms as he try's to help them return fully to humans! Helping them to tackle some feat to accomplish this. With Xiao Zhan also tackling adventures and then having his back out on the road! I bet the director has soon season 2 or a OVA film idea tucked up her sleeve just in case there's interest. The director could also edit it down into a two movie DVD and then a third DVA that was the OVA which is often done in Japan to capture movie audiences who have less attention span than those who watched all the episodes (for new fans to watch and old fans to revisit) but the the OVA that they all will want to such! Although China seems to do more long series than movies, Xiao Zhan has million upon millions of fans, many who still can't figure out how to access the Wolf in their country or who need subtitles in their language. They would love a two movie version with an OVA because it's easier to accurately subtitle three DVDs for multiple languages than a whole series. By making it available to theatres or even platforms as a movie set they could sell it to someone like Funimation who would both sub and dub it if they didn't want to go to the trouble and show it. Then they could sell it everywhere as a three DVD set either specialty items like Xiao Zhans mask and a two baby work figurines or one bigger wolf with the first two DVDs and a mask and then a keychain with two baby wolves in with the a OVA. The could also have a miniature sword like Darren's that is also a writing pen or a hair stick for a bun and sell cute stuffed wolf toys! Ok yes I am specialty item oriented what can I say! Why isn't someone selling cute stuffed wolves with Darren's character name on it and a mask like Xiao Zhans yet with the movie name on it or a chain lanyard with a little wolf tag in metal or shape of a wolf hanging on it like a charm? It's Holiday season. Someone should have been thinking of those specialty items! I warn furry wolf cuddly would have been great to snuggle up to!

I know! I would love that! Every specialty item from the a Untamed I have had to work hard to find! Xiao Zhan needs to get someone from Japan or he US or somewhere on board to work with all of his projects to develop specialty items in China for very thing affiliated to him and his shows and brands he sponsors cause it would be sell out overnight! They need an international portal for all of his many international fans yo buy them but also local fans. He could also tack on a portion of the proceeds directed at special needs projects. They seem to really miss the specialty item development arm in China. Thank goodness the Untamed and its concert and Dan meets had these but the wolf, especially with Christmas here and people so geared to order on line due to the pandemic could havevreally racked up. I figure fans will start developing something but that does not have proceeds going to Xiao Zhan which I would prefer. I would rather see them go to both him and his special needs projects. That would make sure he truly got to see the volume of his support and could use that count in his statistics. I think to this day even Xiao Zhan (or probably anyone in China) really comprehends just how huge he is outside of China in countries all over the globe. Japan has had anime, manga, live version, specialty items and ripple promotions as a big part of their economy for decades so they need to look to their model to understand that potential. The US also uses cross marketing and promotions. The Untsmed is big in Korea, Japan, US, Thailand, etc so hopefully he will either come across someone to develop these connections who really understands the marketing, promotion and partnerships to develop them or they will find him! This development is a key part of things like marvels success. I know I would definately love some cute wolf specialty items!

I love Xiao Zhan in this role! He is so good! I also liked Daren and Li Qin in their roles and think they did a good job, as well as several of the minor characters. I love how the director chose males who both had a strong presence but different energies and also used that to change the tempo and pace of the film. The director pointed out that was intentional orchestration on her part. When the pace started slowing down (as it started doing before Xiao Zhan first comes on scene) she brought him in to speed the pace back up, bring in more action and color and wow that really worked! She does that throughout the series to change the tempo. She also really reflected the characteristics of the wolf in so many things Darren did, even in key scenes with the coloration, action and speed of the sequences. In the end he went from innocence in the wild to the hands of a very vicious master, who trained him harshly to be an assassin and kill on command and be the leader of a group of assassins who are only loyal to him. Throughout the story his master tests his loyalty to ensure his humanity is not bleeding through and even reminds him of the cage he was once kept in and the hand that feeds him and his loyalty to the pack, not to Li Qin. It's subtle and not overstated but I love how it's woven into everything and the difficulty he has escaping who he is.🌿 I also love the subtle use of dark and light tones that change as Darren goes from an innocent in nature to a trained killer whose path he follows.🐺 Three points of a triangle with Li Qin the point in between them.

Darren Wang’s acting was superior to any other lead in the dramas. He brought a most refreshing manly presence to the industry. His depth into darkness and tenderness makes one hold their breath. He is powerful on any level. I hope there is a season 2! Of course millions would watch it. Technically, the writers and director did an amazing job with their ability to weave threads of Sado and masochistic Characters through such collaborative relationships. Outstanding. I hope this director will continue the cinematic costume drama of a lone wolf. It would be sad to see such talent not bloom again!

It is wonderful to happen across this discussion. I watched "The Wolf" when it was first released and was blown away by Darren Wong's performance. This is a towering performance emotionally and physically. He made us care about him and convinced us that he cared deeply about Li Qin's character.

I love all the main roles in this drama. They act so genuinely and evey look fits them really well especially Li Qin. I start loving ❤ her since princess agent. Wish them good luck.
I knew she had acted in roles with Xiao Zhan before, just as Darren had but I was really surprised st how much I liked her in this role! The director spoke on why she chose Xiao Zhan over everyone else to pair with Darren in his role and she pointed out she wanted someone else with a strong presence who could play the third point to the triangle with Darren and Li Qins star crossed romance but most importantly she wanted a male with a different energy to contrast to his and to change the pacing up. If you notice when I he pacing starts to slow down in the beginning that's when Xiao Zhan comes in scene and the pacing picks back up. New action starts and there's more color. She does that change up of pacing using Xiao zhan throughout the series to switch it up. She said she didn't want to totally somber of monotone show. She wanted to contrast the different energies to continually pull the series end the options Li Qin had along. She also very consciously imbedded the inherent characteristics of a wolf in everything related to Daren in very subtle ways. The choices he made, how and where he ended up in the hands of a vicious master who trained him harshly as an assassin and leader over other assassins and he tested him and his loyalty throughout the show send made sure he recalled the cage he had once been in and that it was him that fed him and gave him his new life and that loyalty and following command was everything and he had to continue to fight to hold his place. He tested him to make sure his humanity wasn't gaining a foot over his more primal instincts he had taken advantage of to use for his own purposes. Li Qin was one of the things that was a test. Even in the way she shot him, first in colors and butterfly's and flowers as an innocent and then in overall blacks and greys after wards as opposed to Xiao Zhan who always got the benifit of more color was meant to contrast their different natures. Even though she and the director of the Untamed have different film styles they have many similaritues including their use of closeups to show subtle emotion which I really love. I also like that Li Qin really stands up to both Darren end Xiao Zhans presence and their characters themselves. She doesn't just fade in the background as some carbon copy of every other female in the show. I think they all will pick up new fans from this show fir many reasons. In addition to their good acting and memorable portrayal and how well they worked together, both Daren and Li Qin had supported Xiao Zhan in the past and continued to support Xiao Zhan during the negative propaganda attacks by the black PR group, their minions simplifying it and the creation of fictious events to generate more headings as well as their hackers hacking him and his studio and their antifans doing bizarre things to create problems with his coworkers and work affiliates. As friends they remained loyal to him and didn't run and hide behind doors in fear. I admire each and every person Xiao Zhan has worked with that did not bend to the black PR groups tsctics but also thought they and many of the minor characters also did a really good jobs so will be looking fur otter of their shows in future. Since both Xiao Xhan and Darren have shows sitting on shelves that haven't been released hopefully this success will help get them released so we can see more of both of their shows and they will be offered new projects as well.
I loved this drama and I would love to see a season two with the same actors. I am so grateful that we have English subtitles or a lot of us would miss out on some best series on KZhead.
One of my favorite dramas and would definitely watch another season. Will be watching this again.

Xiao Zhan is so awesome and just knocks this role out of the ballpark he's so good in it! I've really enjoyed watching him in this role! The whole cast is good and play their roles really well but slot of kudos go to this director (just as it did to the director of the Untamed). Both use non traditional film techniques from most if the other costume dramas I've seen. Both of them however do some things better than most and similar to one another. This particular director however knew exactly what she was doing when she chose Xiao Zhan over all others to put on the other point of the triangle with the star crossed couple Li Qin and Darren. Anyone who has watched Xiao Zhan knows how great he is with transitions, rhythms and tempo and that's what she wanted. Someone with a real sense of presence who she could count on to swoop in and change the pace, color and action when the story started getting slow. There are so many things the director wanted to include in Daren's part in multiple subtle ways related to wolves. Their instincts, character, mannerisms, nature, habits. She had a certain pace with him she wanted but didn't want the whole show feeling to grim so Xiao Zhan came in each time and brightened the palette and brought back a bit more wit, humor, action, teasing and yet still an air of mystery. He plays both a fun character in this as well as a dashing one! I love him in this role!

I agree! Xiao Zhan has been in other shows with both Darren and Li Qin. They have both been supportive of him before he could ever be called a star and since have been loyal as friends during the negative propaganda attacks by the black PR group and their minions who amplify it. I hope Xiao Zhan later acts with Darren again in future and Li Qin...and is in a role with this director later as well. I like the many subtle nuances she added that she had spoken about and why she chose Xiao Xhan in particular to pair with Daren due yo them both having a strong presence and yet different energies that she she used in the pacing and tempo of the series, orchestrating it along with other things like color and light . I also liked how she reflected wolves characteristics, instincts and behaviors all throughout the show in relation to Darren in subtle ways. Both Darren and Xiao Zhan still have movies on the shelves that have not been released and I'm hoping the success of this show will help get those off the shelves so we can watch them and they can both get new offers and opportunities. Everyone in the cast did well and I love the setting and rougher edge the two make leads had in this. I really have been enjoying it!

Me to! Xiao Zhan is so good in his role but both Darren and Li Qin and many of the minor characters also really did a good job as well. I've really enjoyed all of them on this show and I like the more ruddy side of the characters and the setting its in as well as the style the director used in terms of many technical points! The whole cast and crew deserves a big round of applause as well as the director!!👏👏👏

Then act as his traveling companions with him able to speak with them or maybe they can only see one another in human form from sunset to dawn then transform back to wolves at dawn, who can only become fully human again by some great feat that takes Xiao Zhan on the path to help them fulfill that! (Ok I can't get enough of those wolves! From the cute baby to the big tough powerful ones!)

This was an amazing series. I too agree that the end was a bitter pill to swallow. I don't know how they'd be able to come up with a season 2 without her. Hope the director changes her mind about making more like this.
I'm going to also shout out to the Yao Ji character, I think she was perfect for her role as a - unfortunately she doesnt have that innocent look china market like to put as leads and usually end up just being forgettable- she is alluring and captivating

I soooo agree with you Anton, I really wish they could release a version of the drama with the actors’ original voices. I know that Chinese dramas are dubbed for a lot of different reasons, but really you can’t really enjoy the actors’ talent at 100% if they’re dubbed... I wish they could leave the scenes « raw » whenever possible and have the other scenes dubbed when it’s needed. Especially in intense scenes like crying scenes! Also I want to thank the director who picked Darren Wang for this role, a truly perfect choice ❤️😍 I finished this drama a couple of days ago and I can’t move on 😭

I love all the characters, each of the actors showed an outstanding performance and I really love the drama. Even it was sad ending, I do like the end. I am one of person does not like sad ending dramas, but this drama I enjoyed the most. I hope they can make second season with the same cast, but this time with this modern time. Thanks 🥰👍
I’ve been watching the wolf over and over for the past four weeks. I can’t bear to watch over on the ending scenes because it has broken my heart so bad. It’s so hard to move on but just watch every episode over again, except the last one. I don’t think there will be season 2 to recover the broken heart fans.

I started watching this drama because of darren wang and because i like were wolf stories...but it's kinda frustrating that in every video regarding this drama ppl are bringing "the untamed" wether it be as a joke or anything else....like i don't mind ppl talking about xz ('cz ppl should) but why bring another drama into this one?

Yeah second to that. I fell in love with this drama... i've waited years for this drama... and it is worth the wait. But i'm getting tired of ppl biased over Xz even when they haven't watch him in it ( ep.11 ) and no offense, his acting is great. But so does Darren and Li Qin.
