In this video, I do a complete brake job on the FL70 dump truck, including seized anchor pins and new wheel seals. I also need to replace the kingpin thrust bearings, so I end up doing a kingpin job.
Jesse doesn't seem to be afraid of anything!!! He literally does more different things than anyone I've seen on the net!
If ever there was a man who deserves a shop to work on his machinery, it's you Jesse. Hope to see you in your own shop sometime.
I will build my 40x60 next year
There's so many great elements in this video: * Home made tools * A lot of hammering * Ingenuity * Using tools to do heavy lifting * Minimal talking, plenty of doing, good explanations * Persistence * Skill * Patience I'm sure I've missed some. I'm probably never going do any of these jobs but feel you can learn so much more than just the repair. These are the best type of KZhead videos. Amazing work. Thanks!
I just wished my wife had the element of minimal talking.
Jesse...comments section is where the real patience comes into play, not the actual work. Appreciate your non-responses and the simple replies without attitude when you do respond. Thanks for the videos.
Damn, those kingpins put up a fight!
In the USSR there was the same truck, it was called ZIL 130 then, too, was a simple workhorse Greetings from Russia✌
Jesus Christ Jesse, what an ass kicker of a job to do. Being in my 50’s, I don’t think I could get that done that fast. Maybe over a weeks period of time lol😄 You do good work my friend👍
This concrete roof I am doing makes this kingpin and brakes job look like a walk in the park
Well done Jesse, a good job. Imagine the labour costs had you got a repair company to do this? Astronomical. I admire yours and Andrews initiative and determination. Bob NZ.

its not that bad, we had kingpins done on our semi and it was only like $1000. in a shop they have way more air tools and air hammers and they can pull that stuff apart in no time, a shop could probably do all this in a couple hours.

We literally just did this last week to a 3 axle trailer ON ALL 6 WHEELS, plus doing 3 S cams & bearings. I'm 120 lbs and lifted a drum without the hub on it myself, but the trailer ones are lighter. I use vice grips on the springs, And push the wire spring in with my fingers. Instead of an impact and a special C-clamp to get those pins out, I use and Oxy/Ace torch on the knuckle then hit it with an air/jack hammer deal. Pop right out.
Where's Part 2 of the skid steer repairs?? We've been looking forward to that video. FYI: I feel like your best videos are when you narrate what's going on and tell us your thinking process. Take care Bud!
Always fill the hubs with oil before you install the outer bearing. Never beat the spider trying to get the anchor pins out it will bend. Heat it with a torch and use the press.
DIY if it ain't broke, hammer on it.
The joys of living in the Rust Belt.
Jesse…. Your “can do it all” mindset is very impressive……. I’ve been watching you and Andrew for a while. Between the two of you guys, nothing is impossible!
Watching you do this, with all the rust issues and corrosion makes me glad I'm here in Texas with little rust. Great job. Reminds me of watching @watchweswork and his repairs. As always, a good video and an example for others
Those two, Jesse and Wes are extremely talented guys. I’ve definitely learned alot watching them. I’m sure you already watch Andrew camarta. If not he’s very talented as well.
@@jasongreen5439 yes, watch Andrew all the time, surprised when Jesse popped up, and watched Dan, Jesse dad before we knew they were related
@@jasongreen5439 don't forget diesel creek 👌
@@geoffrey6000 Matt, at diesel creek. He’s very good also. I watch his videos as well.
Man, I envy you then. I'm in MA, and watching this, I'd consider this truck pretty not bad rust wise, for its age. Serviceable, for sure.
Armchair mechanic - fully satisfied. Thanks Jesse! 😁
My buddy the multi talented Jesse Muller!! I look forward to all your videos Jesse. I especially enjoy when you include your beautiful family. You are a young man with many blessings. I am glad you share your talents & your homestead construction with me. With young men like you in America - maybe there is hope after all!!! Your friend down South Larry C.
Looks like a needle scaler would be handy 👍
I thought you were in trouble there for a moment , I saw the undercarrage inspectore look'n . Should be safe now !
Jesse, you amaze me with all your knowledge and skills (and persistence!). I love watching anything you put out. Can't wait to see the skid steer follow up video and the completion of your house. Your vids are very inspirational and educational.
Thanks Jesse. Any…. and I repeat ANY videos are great!
Great video Jesse. That is a lot of work there, but well worth it. your truck is going to make you a lot money when your done with it, good luck . Jesse.
Congrats Jesse on getting the brakes and king pins on the truck. what some work. looks like the all underside needs sandblasted.
That everyone in this world would have this approach to work like You ...
I would paint the rim black and the lock ring silver. They look real good when done that way.
Man, the struggle is real! I appreciate the way you approach recording your work. A lot of (most?) videos make hard jobs look easy. This was a hard one, and your effort really shows. I guess this is what "reality" TV REALLY looks like. Always enjoy/commiserate and learn something from you. Thanks, keep up the good, honest work!
Jesse, if you have time, you can freeze those bushings Overnight, and they will just slip right in. give them a couple of hours to warm up, and they'll be tight in the bore. Might save you some effort, and frustration. That's a lot of work regardless.
It's indeed a great day when both Jesse & Andrew post. The NY cousins
Man I would love to bead blast those rusty hubs on that truck, would be so satisfying to see them clean up. Great job!
Drum brakes are always a pain... 8-0 Thx for showing! :-D
Jesse knows his stuff. Go Jesse!!!
Thanks Jesse I didn't know you could use a sledgehammer for so much....
When you reinstall the tires....you place your 4 pound hammer along side the tire hammer head down and handle upwards alongside the rubber tire. It is your gauge to see if you have the tire tighten properly. You spin the tire as you tighten the spots that need to be brought back into their proper place.
That's how I was shown to install Dayton wheels back in 1985. It works but probably overtightens some of the wheel studs in the process.
Never heard or seen a tool like this before in my whole life
what tool? the torque multiplier?
@@jmuller86 yes sir
@@jamesbutler1862 if you think you would ever need to change a spare in a big truck. Buy a couple of these bad boys and throw one behind the seat
@Jesse Muller if I was rich like you I would 🤣
@@jamesbutler1862 I definitely aint rich. You can buy one for 79.99 at lots of places. If you want to buy it at vevor.com they are 49.99. you cant even get hooked up to a tow truck for that kind of money
Job well done Jessie thers not much you won't tackle. Work shop when the house is finished.👌
Your perseverence , patients , very calm persistance and knowledge is amazing , also how you cope with your surroundings . I enjoy your video's very much . Thank you !
That's impressive doing all that work by himself, I could only imagine how long it took but at least he saved thousands by doing it himself.
@@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP not in this video, I think only pat helped for a minute
@@jmuller86 Oh, ok. Thank you!
Jesse - you have amazing patience and resolve. As an Upstate NYer, we would be pissing, moaning, f bombing and throwing tools if we were doing this job. And there is the rust.......... Well done Sir.
Long, strenuous day. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed.
Great video Jessie!!!! I enjoyed it. Blessings to you and your family.
A really interesting video Jesse , thank you for sharing this work with us . 👍👍🇬🇧
I would rather have a root canal without meds than do what you just did. It was educational!
I do like your videos where you narrate and explain your thought process, but this is a cool style as well. Looking forward to seeing progress on the track loader soon
Enjoyed watching the kingpins being changed, glad you never needed a shop press to get it apart 👍🏻👍🏻
Always interesting to watch your repairs, thanks for putting the video together. 👍
Pretty handy having a torque multiplier at your disposal.
???? those things are cheap. Unless you get the tool truck stuff
@@TheKajunkat He never said they were expensive.
And a sledge hammer 😎
@@CarrotCaptain Yeah, I was just mentioning the "handiness" of having one.
Jess .. i'm sorry but i have to stop watching your video's .. i get exhausted and it literally take me 2 days to recover from all the hard work.. you are one hard workin man ..love the channel.. oh.. and now i know how to change break's on a dump truck..
Great work, man, it was pleasure to watch you doing a service, you've got golden hands!
Awesome video! The amount of tools needed to complete these repairs is incredible.
This is awesome not sure there’s anything you can’t fix. Can’t wait to see the skid steer update I’ve been checking every day!!!
Ah yes the Dayton hubs brings back lots of memories. Thanks Jesse
Gotta love NY roads. I can't believe that first kingpin came out as easy as it did after all the fighting you had to do to get the retaining bolts out...
Throw and methodical love your work! Cheers Mr Muller!
Stuff i use to do king pins on cars 45 years ago not much has changed cheers from OZ.
When you're trying to break the axle shaft free thread, the nuts back on a bit (so you don't send the cone washers into orbit lol, been there done that), take your biggest sledge and hit it like you really mean. SWING IT LIKE YOU'RE MAD at it, it'll come free.
Jesse, I like how you learn from mistakes and think about "next time."
Good Job ! You Saved Yourself a Lot ,I like the fact that there's nothing you can't Do "Where there's a will there's a way"
you know the value of what got there, tanks for sharing
Jesse I'm a fan of Andrew Camarata but became a big fan of yours also I learned so much from watching your channel. I really love how your make time for your children to work with you.You seem like a good man my friend. God Bless.
Nice job Jesse, that truck is worth it with low milage it will last you for a long time and once it inspected it will pay off in the long run. Waiting for a video on the house build.
HIS PERSEVERANCE AND HIS TALENT IS ADMIRABLE👍
Great work Jesse, Another job well done.
I was more than impressed. That was a massive amount of work. Cannot imagine what a shop would charge
Great Job Sir. I give you a lot of credit... Huge job, outside, on gravel, just busting it... My back & knees were hurting just watching this video.... And it snows overnight near the end, so we know you're freezing your butt off the whole time.... Ugh.
Great video Jesse. Awesome persistence and mechanical skills under not perfect conditions. It always get me, how the f.. is he gonna fix that, and then there it is, its fixed. Great stuff. Its hard to be impressed on other youtube car mechanics with million dollar shops making videos about how to put spacers while changing tire.
Thanks Hesse - that was real informative for us shade tree mechanics!!!!
I would love to share a "pop: with you some day. Totally awed by your natural mechanical skills.
Great work, thanks for the posting.
Great work Jesse. Keeping that truck on the road compared to the cost of a newer one is a no brainer. Your knowledge will get you more than money will--not that money isn't a great "getter of good things." Knowing how to fix things goes farther than money does.
Your attention to detail is so nice to see nowadays.
Always enjoy watching.
Looking forward to your videos. Always enjoy them
Nice job, Jesse.
Thank you for another awesome video, Jessie! God Bless.
thats a massive job well done 👍
While not as popular as some others Jesse is tops in his overall quality and his knowledge amazes me and his subscriber base increasing shows it ..hmm let me check what i wrote down lol Nov 7/22021, 101,000, March 29/22 , 111,000
CRAZY JOB. RETIRED 77, USAF VFW.
Well Jesse, you can definitely tail you are in the upper north east of the US from all the rust underneath his truck. Job well done bud, enjoy the video. 🛠⚒🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸⚒🛠. 65000.0 miles, wow it’s definitely worth keeping around.
great video!!! lota hard work there but very important to be safe
nice job man!, I love you correcting people in the comments who seem to know everything, or aren't paying close attention to the video. keep it up.
Excellent video thanks for sharing.
Awesome job. You saved yourself $2G of labor
And made 20 bucks on youtube :D
Hey Jesse commercial truck repair is heavy strength saponin I spent 18 yrs years repairing trucks and trailers inc mobile cranes our company didn’t like buying new parts so we had to repair all we could enjoyable times when at a time I was fit to do it good luck to you great video brings back memories
Outstanding burke bar action
You need a few more tools like - wedge plyers, ladies foot set and a twenty pound hammer. That big hammer will break those axles loose. Surprised that you replaced everything but the s cam bushings? Just one more point, when the front wheels are put back on I would put a piece of four by four on the ground beside of the wheel and tighten it and spin it to get it on as straight as possible. You did well, good work.
Your one hell of a hard worker. Keep up the great videos!
Jesse great video , I can relate to the rust.
Comgrats from Sevilla, Spain.
Good job, Good teacher.
Nice job. Lots of work. Boy do you need a shop.
Well that was a job and a half.👍
Thanks for sharing very instructive . Best I have seen on the internet on how to on that model truck . I have the same truck . I see what I did wrong thanks .
Today I learned: truck drum brakes seem to be a lot less awful than car drum brakes.
They are, but they’re so heavy I hate them 😂, they equally make me mad, but for absolutely different reasons 😂
@@ThePolomoloQC no adjustments necessary?
Harder to get to but easier to install. So probably similar over all.
@@DSGLABEL plenty of adjustment necessary; it is inboard at the slack adjuster. The funny looking cam thing which the brake can pushes on.
C2
I have the same truck with a cat engine and six speed eaton. Mine works great and yours has lots of potential so keep at it!!!
Great video as always Jesse keep it Man.
@Jesse Muller Working alone can be incredibly risky, if you are out of earshot of help, always try to avoid suspended loads of any sort if at all possible. In this instance, I would have left the wheels on the rig, jacked the wheel just clear of the ground, then push a greased board under the middle of the tyre and lower the jack till the wheel weight is just supported, then undo the hubnut and the entire assembly slides off without need to lift anything, the advantage of this is if chocked in that position, a wheel that slid off will always slide straight on as easy as it came off. Just an old timer teaching a young buck how to suck eggs!!!
My buddies brother bought a 2 year old 1 tonne truck for plowing and didn’t clean the undercarriage before he started. 1 year later, the entire undercarriage Wes completely rusted out. Frame, springs and brakes. All because he didn’t want to clean it. Meanwhile the truck that my buddy bought was in great shape because he took the time to do some preventative maintenance. It took us 1 day but that truck is still working like it’s brand new.
Another great video Jesse
Nice job as usual Jesse
Lots of extra work on those Dayton styles wheels. I was living vicariously and painfully along with you. Used to work on trash packers and we had a couple of White/Volvo/GMC(yeah there was a year with all 3 badges)trucks with Daytons. As the new guy, I ‘got’ to wrench on em. Few extra steps :-) The FL is a great little work horse, that thing is gonna go till she needs pads again, who cares about the wheels. Spend that $3k on something pressing. And rusty, rusty where?? I’ll show you rusty as soon as I find your IG. Good work, summer is close by. We’ll be going like gangbusters!
