How to use a Thickness Planer - DeWalt Benchtop Thickness Planer DW735 / DW735X Full Review

After much research I settled on this thickness planer and was not disappointed. Owned and used for over 5 years. I'll explain every aspect on how to use it and what to expect. What accessories you will want and what you don't need.
Note that in the video I mention that you can fix cupping with the thickness planer, but not twisted or bowed boards. If you put a twisted or bowed board through as is, you will be left with a thinner twisted or bowed board. It is possible to use a sled to fix a twisted or bowed board, but this is limited to only fixing slight twist or bow.

  • I like the 2 speed feature. Twists/bows can be taken out by using a sled and wedges. You can find several videos on the process here on YT.

    • I have one of those router sled videos posted a few days ago 😁

    • @@realhouseDIY So what is the issue with this planer when using sleds for twists or bows that you state won't work at 7:27? Sleds for thickness planers are super simple to use.

    • Okay, thought you were talking about something else. I meant you can't run a board that is twisted or bowed through by itself and expect to fix it. You will just get a thinner board that is still twisted or bowed. Yes, if you build a sled to place it on, that could work.

    • Though thinking about the twisted and bowed boards I have come across, they would never have worked. The defect is beyond the thickness of the board, or even anything beyond 1/2" you'd end up with a very thin board. And of course we all know that a board that has twisted will twist again! Best to not even bother with it and use a good board instead.

  • Hi very nice presentation. I have a 13 inch dewalt thickness planer. Let’s say I have three pieces of 2X4 and each one them is 2-7/16 , 2-3/8, and 2-5/16 how do I make all three of them being 2-5/16 without manually measuring them. I appreciate your input. Thanks

    • Depends on how accurate you need. If you need the accuracy, then for the final cut, I would run a scrap piece through first and check it is exact. Definitely run all 3 each time you turn down the planer to ensure they all end up the same thickness.

  • dewalt planer dw733-QS, dw735 or metabo dh330 which one to choose?

    • I compared all the DeWalt ones at length and went with the 735. No experience with the dh330 but it looks very similar build to the dw733. Any serious rough lumber I'd go with the 735. A smaller workshop planer, the 733 will be fine.

    • For what it's worth, I compared everything for quite a while, from the cheap Wen brand all the way to the Grizzly with the helical cutter head. There is no obvious winner but the DeWalt one I'm very happy with.
