  • "For whatever reason, he can get away with it." The reason is misogyny, he gets away with a ton of shit because even though women make up the major percentage of those who are buying makeup and who are directly marketed towards, the makeup industry and the fashion industry is misogynistic at its core. It's why female influencers can't get away with or are criticised more for the same behavior male influencers are, and why female influencers have to deal with a ton of ageism. Male influencers also don't have to answer for their looks the same way female influencers do, or are criticized in the same way or for the same things. It's misogyny.

    • Hannieah to add to that, I think also a lot of (straight) women look at him as like their “gay best friend” and therefore it’s ok if he makes rude remarks etc bc “he’s just like that”. Whereas if a straight man said the same thing they would be up in arms. Multi layer misogyny I guess haha

  • The only reason his personality ever helped at all is because he's a man. He's had a problematic personality from the start. If he did any of that shit as a woman, it would have tanked the brand despite how "cool" the next palette was. This isn't just a beauty community problem, this shit happens everywhere.

    • Hot take 2: the fall of ABH also helped killed the collectors mentality of other brands, starting as far back as the original Norvina palette

      @KariTalks@KariTalks3 жыл бұрын
    • I wouldn't say ABH is responsible for that... MAC was doing long before ABH came on to the scene, and ColourPop came out of the gate doing it... If anything, ABH had to keep up.

    • xamyx I only say ABH because I came into makeup right when the liquid lipsticks released and they were all the rage. I missed the hay day of Mac. I feel like colourpop leaned that way around 2017/2018

      @KariTalks@KariTalks3 жыл бұрын
    • @@KariTalks When ColourPop launched, it was back-to-back LE collections, and because the company had very little overhead, they could keep prices low, which excited people. It also meant that one could by an entire collection for the cost of one palette from another brand, and consumers were excited for the next release. As a result, other brands have had to keep up, especially those who rely on Social Media for promotion. Given how products cycle in & out, brands like ABH had to continue to release new things, or risk being buried by ColourPop collections. Estee Lauder was actually the first brand to play the LE game. I'm old enough to remember brands, overall, relied on Seasonal collections, and a solid core of permanent products...

  • I think the fact that Jeffrey Stars doesn't portray himself as a nice person unlike every influencers helped him a lot. Because people felt like he was probably the least fake person. He was clearly egocentric, unapologetic and just a not very nice person. Other influencers who messed up fell harder because they were thought to be the kindest, only for people to realize they were human with flaws too. You don't expect a bad person to do good things so the impact of the bad things are lessened when compared to those in which we expected so much more of.

He relates well to the underdog. I think he's good to his staff if they're good to him. And also - he's a fucking iNCREDIBLY hard worker! i put a lot of respect on that. We know that it takes months and months to produce makeup and all of the palettes were already ordered by the time the pandemic hit. I don't think him releasing the palette in the time that he did was him being insensitive, but rather bad timing and not wanting to lose the millions of dollars he already invested into that project. • 4) Redundant separate plaette for the glitters, like why? If he put those shades into the bigger one, then it would've looked more interesting than it does. I've seen both the big Orgy and the mini in real life and only the mini was interesting, but kind of waste because why should anyone want just glitters without mattes? Why didn't he do the same thing with Orgy like with his other palettes? He probably had a sugar rush or something while he was planning these palettes, so random. I wouldn't buy then nonetheless, even if he made them more interesting in colour scheme or with the packaging. 5) Disastrous naming. Want your product be sellable - name it properly. Orgy is a word that is deffinetly going to be cencored in social media, especially here, so why do this and shoot yourself in the foot? Oh, for controversy's sake.

    • The packaging for both this palette and the cremated palette were very unpleasing to the eyes. I think that a regular cardboard palette would be fine but for both designs I feel like the outer name was too in your face and not aesthetically pleasing at all. The background was white for cremated, which with the inside of the palette being white too, I think I didn’t tie into the colors as well. The little characters on the o*gy palette honestly looked not so great in my opinion for a brand that has had simple and sleek designs in the past. Changing it up isn’t bad but these two palettes did not hold up at all. I mean I don’t like the brand anyways but if jeffy is going to place himself on such a high pedestal he needs to raise the bar with his packaging.

It's one thing to look at pictures and rip off a design, but a whole other thing when you REACH OUT TO THE COMPANY under the pretense that you like their product. I see it time and time again in the lingerie industry. Small brands come out with something awesome (an extensive line of skin-like colors, a unique design feature, spot-on inclusive sizes) and creative directors from big companies (COUGH Victoria's Secret) make a huge purchase and next season have their own line of unique designs or inclusive sizes and colors. It infuriates me to no end when larger companies and influencers don't even try to hide the fact they are copying designs.

I did know someone who was a big fan and owned multiple pallettes. What I noticed was that they would end up panning maybe 1-3 colors, have some moderately used ones, and then like half the pallette was basically untouched. Same thing when I look at reddit or instagram and people are listing off what they used in their look: they're using 1 MAYBE 2 jeffree shades, and then everything else is different brands. And nowadays, lots of brands are offering super bold colors with high quality formulations. As you pointed out, Jaclyn gets raked over the coals _every time_ something bad happens. (not saying she doesn’t deserve actual criticism, she does) When the Manny/Laura/Gabriel/Nikita ship sank, it really felt like the only person who never got a life vest was Laura Lee, despite Gabriel saying she was a good person deep down. Kat Von D had to give up her brand for her terrible comments, but jeffree is still doing fine monetarily. Again, not saying anyone shouldn’t be criticized, but I do wish people would at least keep that same energy across the board.

(Not that I’m surprised coming from him) but still...he made it seem like she screwed him over, got his hopes up and left him, had nothing left but his faith and last dollars and flourished on his own with no help. • @@zeej80 true... but then again the ones that digged up the dirt were his stans and I think I remember jeffree actively encouraging his stans to attack the 4 of them with that one snap chat of him crying because he felt "betrayed." Whereas when manny and Laura lee were defending jeffree they took their own followers heat in support of Jeffree and his company. From a P.R. standpoint, supporting a person who's is coming under fire for racism isnt a beneficial strategy, but they still supported him. We also have to keep in mind that there was a reason for them to post that photo. What that reason was i dont know or remember but with all the dirt that's come out on Jeffrey recently.... I think that the reason they had for posting that image possibly was a legitimate one. He may not have directly turned on them but by not controlling his stans and by appealing to them emotionally with that snapchat it he indirectly turned on them and he used his stans to do the dirty work. And the current information that's come out on jeffree supports that

  • i LOVE these exposé/commentary types of videos surrounding the beauty community. as someone who grew up watching some of the more OG channels, i am super interested in the change that’s happened in such a short amount of time. thank you so much for putting in all of the hard work that you do and doing adequate research!!

    • I think that the formulation of Jeffree’s products are so insanely good! It’s going to be really hard for me to stop supporting him because they’re better than anything else on the market I’ve tried. Kat Von D’s brand is pretty subpar, especially after her anti-vax scandal. I don’t know how anybody likes her foundation. It felt like I was wearing a mask

  • if your doing brand analysis videos, i recommend colourpop, because i remember when they first started and kathleenlights was promoting them with her lumiere lipstick, and now they’re at the point where they release new collections weekly and i’m baffled at how they got there

  • I am loving this deep dive series! A suggested future topic: Eugenia Cooney. In light of the recent scandals with her discord, overall reevaluations of Shane’s documentaries on YTers, and the course of her recovery/relapse in the last year, I’d be really interested in your perspective on her and what her popularity on the platform tells us about YT. Regardless, LOVING these “YTer history” type videos!! Thank you for all the hard work that I’m sure goes into them
