In the 1980s, Phil Collins earned millions of fans by churning out a string of Top 40 hits. But to those who worked with him, Collins could be overly-demanding and difficult.

    • Yes his contributions to the music industry will stand the test of time. He had 17 US top 40 hits with Genesis and their only number one hit with Invisible Touch plus 3 dozen US top 40 solo hits and seven US number singles (Groovy Kind of Love, Against All Odds [Take A Look at Me Now], Separate Lives, Two Hearts, Another Day In Paradise, One More Night, and Sussudio). In that 20 year span, he had a combined total of 53 US top 40 hits and eight US number one singles.

    • That's nice to hear. To be honest, I'm not a fan of all of this business of putting rock stars on a pedestal, referring to them as 'gods', 'legends', etc. In the end, they make a nice noise for a living; key workers, who get nowhere near the status or adulation, are far more important to all of us. Society has a very odd sense of perspective...

    • @@odetteswann7694 I see where you are coming from. The perspective I suppose is that anybody can be what you call a key worker - the bar is very low - whereas very few get to be what people call a rock star. It may be that many people "could" do what a rock star does (unlikely) but it's what you are that counts, not what you could/would/should be.

    • @@MrMikomi Anybody can be a key worker? No. Anybody nowadays COULD be a key worker (you're correct that the bar is low/has been lowered); but it takes a special kind of person to be able to do well what a policeman, say, or a nurse, has to do. That's why we have so few good police and health care workers. Rock stars got where they are by indulging in their hobbies, not by devotion to the service of others, often enduring unhealthy eat/sleep patterns to carry out what they feel they need to do. And in the end, society could survive without rock stars, but not without key workers, as the pandemic should have reminded everyone. It's society's perception and values that have become skewed. That's my take on it, anyway.

    • My take on the Chester situation (and the legendary Mr. Sklar may attribute similarly) had a lot to do with Phil's psychological toll in dealing with how much he was taking notice of his physical breakdowns. Even in 2010, his age had affected his vocal range considerably, and even some of his projection He would pretty much lose his capacity to play the kit not too far down the road, and I think it was a difficult emotional thing for a musician like him to handle. I honestly don't know if Chester (who to my knowledge is kind of semi-retired due to his own age, and the physical toll taken on nearly all rock drummers--last I had heard, already a while back he was teaching / operating at a pretty regarded conservatory...he may have retired from that by now as well) and Phil have patched issues up or kept in touch in more recent years.

  • True story I have known for over 25yrs - in the 80s and 90s my dad used to run for Saints & Sinners Athletics Club in Crawley, West Sussex. A fellow club member was door-knocking his Loxwood neighbourhood for sponsorship ahead of the London Marathon, only for our man Phil to answer. Somewhat shocked, he explained he was running the marathon to raise funds for whatever the charity was. Phil said "Put me down for twenty". After the marathon, my dad's club mate went round to collect donations (this is before the internet and digital payments etc). Phil congratulated him and wrote him a cheque for £520. Perplexed, the runner explained a sponsorship fee of £20 had been agreed, to which Mr Collins replied, "yes, £20 per mile". A gent.

Genesis music was enormously ambitious, when you look at the quality of their writing and performing output and how young they were through like, Foxtrot era, it's staggering. Phil was so unique as a drummer that he's usually overlooked as one of the greats, people seem to pigeonhole him more as a vocalist which he's great at, but it's his drumming which is phenomenal, if you haven't heard Apocalypse in 9/8 he's holding this all together.

That may also be part of the drive to keep going even when they should call it a day. I respect Elton John for doing this, though arguably his best musical days were over a decade ago.

  • So Phil's ex-wife who happened to be a band with him back in the stone ages, has an axe to grind and now wants to talk ish about Phil as a "bandmate"? Couldn't care less. Gabriel had issues with everybody in Genesis(not just Collins), before he started chumming around with W. Friedkin during the most critical parts of the "Lamb" sessions/live shows. Then he left the band in a fit of pique. Tony Banks had known Gabriel since attending Charterhouse School together so I would guess his "issues" with Gabriels later disappointing antics with Genesis were to a person, a much bigger issue. Chester Thompson was a great live drummer for Genesis but he did have issues with being late and other musical disagreements with Banks/Rutherford on how to drum the live material. Bruford was recruited by Collins for the '76 tour and nobody else could have pulled it off, any complaints from Collins notwithstanding. Could've fooled me that Stuermer had issues with Phil, seeing as how he played with him for many more hours in Phil's solo projects much like Chester, than he(they) ever did with Genesis. Hackett's prognostications about him and Phil working together post-Genesis, were mostly wrong. He should feel very lucky and privileged that Phil et al greenlit the licensing(with pennies on the dollar fees btw) of Genesis's 1970's catalogue, so Hackett could inanely go on to mostly butcher and stumble though those songs with noticeably less skill and inspiration with his "Musical Box" band. Which was never anything more than a C-grade 1970's Genesis cover band. Jimmy Page was great in his day but his snub of Collins is meaningless. It was his bad, egocentric idea to even try to reform Zeppelin at LiveAid. And realistically no drummer other than Cozy Powell, Denny Carmassi or one of the Appice's, would have worked to cover such a breadth of difficult material on such a breakneck, woefully short rehearsal schedule. Jason Bonham was still too young at that time and tbh, is not at that level of skill/nuance as a rock drummer and still isn't today. Bottom line is~ Anyone who knows Genesis knows that Tony Banks was always the quiet taskmaster and joyless workaholic compared to Collins, Rutherford or anyone else. Phil until the mid-80's and his first failed marriage to Bertorelli, was always known as the light, jovial and disconnected member of Genesis. And without Phil's capital infusions from his solo career(which also enabled Genesis to access certain studio/stage trickery like the Veri-Lite system and superior sound systems), Genesis in the 80's would not have had as much visibility as they did. Phil's always been an easy target and certainly may have had some transgressions in his young, middle-aged and older life. But no sane and educated person can ever say he's not the complete professional in many instruments/genres and pioneered techniques in production/promotion/marketing that changed pop/all music forever.

    • Great Phil/Genesis knowledge. Like you said Phil's always been an easy target for haters and ignorant critics. Now that sadly he may be enjoying his final years after all the years of depression and alcoholism have caught up to him, he's finally getting his due. Phil's easily the most influential pop musician since McCartney. Possibly more so, imo and I'm 72.

    • @@mikew5858 No argument and of course no negative implications intended on Tony's part. Every band needs a primary and reliable sonic motor/impetus of creativity and for Genesis, Tony was it. Although I would amend that to say in writers like Bacharach, Toussaint and Gershwin, Tony finds peers in that multi-genre of mega-prolific creators, not just prog. He just happened to do it in the postmodern era of organized mass media, with a lot less credit.

    • Wow, what a complete misreading of this clip! The title of the clip only says his former band mates have "a lot to say about him", *not* that it was necessarily bad, and indeed only three of the people quoted here--his ex-wife, Chester Thompson, and Jimmy Page--had anything bad to say. Everyone else had nothing but praise in their quotes for Collins but for some strange reason you thought they were trashing him and so decided to needlessly trash them all in return. Hackett's solo band does *breathtaking* work recreating the magic of 70s Genesis (and his own superb solo work is the only by any member that's in the old prog style, leaving him the ONLY one carrying the torch for that hallowed era), and Jason Bonham did as good a job as I could have imagined filling in for his dad's shoes at the 2007 O2 LZ show--to even critique either the way you did is pretty sickening. And there were a lot of issues between Peter and the band in 1974/5, not all of them Gabriel's fault like you're making. He had a baby that was hospitalized in ICU and none of the band members gave him an ounce of sympathy, they even admit to that. Stuermer *didn't* have issues with Phil, he nothing but good things to say and Tony had nothing but good things to say about Collins as well so to trash him as a "joyless workaholic" (you wanna talk about who was the workaholic in the band?!?) is just totally pointless and unnecessary. But you know what? *I'LL* trash Phil right now--sure, he's one of the greatest drummers in rock history (at least, between 1970-80) and his first solo album was cool, but everything after that was putrid AC crap. There's a reason he's one of the most critically reviled solo artists in history and that's because his music is pure cheesy pap and top it all off, he couldn't say no to a single chance to promote his work in the late 80s and early 90s, leading to insane levels of oversaturation that made people sick of him on sight. And I note how you trash his ex-wife yet can't refute her claim that she only divorced him because HE had an affair. Hardly the way he told the story in his autobiography, which makes him a liar. I'll take Hackett's and Gabriel's solo careers a thousand times over Collins, both of those men have actual artistic integrity. Now go ahead, say your worst toward me--you're obviously good at dishing out insults, which seems to be the only thing you live for.

  • Led Zeppelin at Live Aid was a desaster. Robert Plant had ovrstrained his voice the day before and was hoarse. Collins didn't know the songs and played "air drums" for a lot of the time. The other drummer, Tony Thompson, tried to outshine Collins, because he apparently was speculating on getting John Bonham's old job in a possible fulltime Zeppelin reunion (that never happened). But for Jimmy Page to repeatedly try and blame Collins for _everything_ that went wrong that day? That's a good one! Page himself was so messed up on heroin and booze that he was nearly catatonic and visibly drooled on himself backstage. He probably played the worst of everybody on stage. One of the first things he did on stage was stumble around aimlessly, entangle himself, his guitar cable, his scarf, and a microphone stand - and make a complete fool of himself. He played the first song with an absolutely awful cranked phaser/flanger sound that made it impossible to tell what he was even doing. He was either so messed up, he didn't know how to use his own pedalboard anymore and turn it off - or so COMPLETELY messed up, he didn't even hear the difference. I guarantee, the only reason Page even knows he was there at all, is because he had to look at and listen to the footage later.
