I would buy the Surface pro for work and an iPad for entertainment. The truth is I will never buy either I never had that sort of money.
Some of the reviews for this don't make sense. This kzhead.infoUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA works as well as any power strip I've used. Plug in what you need, be sensible about it & keep it movin' The construction is plastic but it's a sturdy piece. It has a single toggle switch & the swivel jacks are useful as well. Perfect no complaints will update if anything changes.
I own an ipad pro (not m1), and it's a fine device, but (for me), a tablet OS will likely never replace a regular desktop OS. Even with m1 outperforming in most of these categories, the surface is the better fit for my current workflow needs.
True, apple gotta start leaning towards a desktop type os over innovating iPad os
@@hariharanbalaji2457 they won't do it. they want people to buy both ipad and macbook.
@@SW-fy8pq fair enough, but it's this that keeps me out of the Apple ecosystem.
I agree, I just got a macbook pro 14, I prefer it over the ipad pro 12.9 with keyboard. It's just more versatile and not limited with a full OS - MacOs vs ios. To bad they didn't come out with the 14 first, I would not have purchased the ipad.
If I got iPad Pro should I return for the pro 8 or keep my MacBook pro m1?
I don't care how fast Apple makes the IPad it is still a tablet (mobile ) platform while the surface is a full desktop platform. Nuff said there!
True but the surface is a piss poor tablet experience in comparison. The iPad has powerful ecosystem of specialised apps dedicated to touch and stylus interface. I have both for home and work, and whilst I like the file system on the surface pro and I like that it's a full desktop I do find myself reaching for the iPad more. It's generally faster, better for drawing, lasts much longer on battery, has a better camera which I use for scanning or recording video. It's enjoyable to watch content on. It also avoids the annoying updates in window. I could go on...s > They serve different needs. If I had to pick just one device it would be the surface as it can do more, but the iPad pro excells at more than just speed, and that's why many prefer it and it still outsells the surface. I still see the iPad as a companion device for myself, but I know people who use it as their only device and it suits their needs. Some people just want a good tablet. Apple does need to utilise the m1 chip more though...
@@makasete30 I find the iPad to be a more niche device. So people who do a lot of drawing or use CAD software for home design, Adobe mobile then the iPad is perfect. For a reg student or consumer device I would get the Samsung tablet. That's my biggest tissue with Apple though. Their devices are every specific to a particular function. Cause if you're not into video and photo editing or music what's what's the purpose of a Mac. As everyday devices they don't justify their price tag but work very well for their niche functions. I'm not sure I could ever give up a desktop platform for mobile but then again I'm a heavy desktop user
@@denziiey Windows is much better for CAD. I say this as a CAD Designer
The problem is windows touch is a joke compared to an iPad, so the surface is a far better full computer but a much crappier tablet if you remove the keyboard. For people who want just one hybrid device to do everything I think the OS needs the flexibility to switch between full desktop mode and a tablet mode. Shame that windows seem to have abandoned the tiles approach from win8 for touch, that style had potential for when u just wanna chill in bed or on the couch with a tablet
@@Shinn27 in that case I think Samsung has done a great job emulating a desktop experience on a tablet. Sadly though lazy software developers won't engineer professional apps. iPad is just a big, expensive and overpowered toy. It would be a nice device for everyone if not for crippling it's potential iOS. Macs are nice and with M1 would be great, but without touchscreen they are useless for me.
I like the iPad but using it like a computer is beyond frustrating, even with basic things like websites act weird on the ipad
iPadOS 15 is buggy af. Safari became very confusing and super frustrating to use. Battery drains soooooo fast. And yes, you’re right, no matter how hard I just to use it as a computer replacement, it never felt like one.
Please elaborate, weird in what way?
True iPad is mainly a consumption machine You can edit photos and videos on it. Also draw as well. So it has some uses but for the most part it’s designed for you to read, watch, and interact with what your reading and watching. Making stuff is not it.
I’ve noticed that websites just feel like they aren’t optimized or they are using old versions of websites. Some websites you have to click things twice (the KZhead website does this), and some websites don’t display the menus properly. Those are a few things I noticed
@@iloveminecraft2009 Interesting.. is this a mobile Safari issue or do other iPad browsers share the same problem??
And also to add, Thunderbolt port from Surface could be used to plug an eGPU on it and increase power. Great video!
Surface Pro 8 for the win. It can get work done AND have fun. Especially if you add an eGPU into the mix. Try playing a cross platform FPS game on the iPad vs Surface Pro 8, Surface Pro 8 will be faster/smoother everytime. Also, even iPad OS has issues while consuming. You'll visit a page and try to watch the embedded video only to get an error "This video not available on a mobile device". Surface Pro 8 be like "Enjoy your video". I stopped at the iPad 4. I was tired of the restrictions and lockdowns due to iOS and to find out that iPad OS is also locked down is just a massive disappointment after all these years. The video goes to show that all the power in the world means nothing if the OS won't let you use it. I've personally felt that the Surface Pro 3 was the iPad Killer already, but now that the Surface Pro 8 has Thunderbolt 4.....it's definitely the better TABLET (Yes, I said tablet because that's the form factor. The keyboard is detachable and not permanently fixed and the screen is touchscreen so this makes it a TABLET not a LAPTOP. People trying to save the iPad from embarrassment because it can't compete with the Surface Pro so they put the Surface Pro in with the Laptops to be like "you didn't see that..." lol) of the two and has been for a while now. Hopefully Apple can get MacOS or make iPad OS more flexible and powerful in the future instead of restricting it's users.
What eGPU do you use? I like that idea but haven't ever used an eGPU..
Good video. Agree with most of the comments. The operating system matters. A modified cellphone operating system is not adequate for a pro device. Great hardware on the iPad Pro, but it doesn't fit my workflow so I can't take advantage of it. I can drive four independent monitors with a Surface Pro. The iPad Pro just seems to me to be overkill since you have all of this power, but the same limited functionality as a regular iPad.
This a concise yet informative comment. Thanks
Would appreciate if you could share how you connected 4 monitors, I can only see it recognizing two externals for me thru the dell 300 hub - what is your set up. Thank you in advance.
I watched 15 minutes of Max Tech video (a rare occurrence) to be met with exactly what I expected. Amazing video, great for those who didn't know about the pro-app problem with iPad Pro.
A good review. Surface is a real computer where you can run all the desktop apps and programs. But iPad is just a tablet (the best one though) with its limitations. I'm writing this comment from the Surface. And I use it as 2-in-1: a tablet and a PC depending on my purposes
And in that case it’s better to get one the less expensive iPads than the pro no ? The iPad it’s an amazing tablet the best in my opinion but the iPad Pro is the worst choice of the two in one. Devices I don’t hate Microsoft or android my phone is android but the apple software is the best in my opinion due to being the easiest to use for non tech experts and the most secure against malware and viruses. With apple you don’t need an antivirus with Microsoft you do.
How do you find the pen? Have you also used an apple pencil at some point and could you compare the two? I'm torn between buying a Surface Pro 8 for university or buying the iPad Air and a laptop separately. If you had to do a large amount of maths which would you prefer? Would you ever read on your Surface?
@@sarizonana The Surface has Windows 11, not Android. It's a full computer first that can be used as a tablet experience when using the touchscreen for drawing or taking notes. The iPad is a tablet first since it uses a tablet OS rather than something like MacOS or Windows. The software is much more limited and is locked down in Apple's ecosystem. It's fine if you only use programs from the App Store and don't need a computer, but it can't replace a computer for those who use one. Also the built in anti-virus for Windows has been pretty good since Windows 10. Majority of people don't need a separate one.
@@joeyn177 ohh ok thanks for explaining how windows has improved and how the surface is a laptop first, anyway I know the surface is windows what I meant was that android with the S series has a pretty similar use to the surface. It’s the best tablet but worst two in one. Hope that makes sense and that’s why I think the iPad Pro is not worth getting. if you are sure you want the iPad buy one of the cheaper models either the iPad 9, iPad Air or iPad mini but the iPad Pro is too pricey for just a tablet but not efficient enough for a two in one
@@Pilgrim1st I have not used the apple one before but I can give my opinions about my surface pro 8. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now as a student. I'm learning computer science, so my needs such as compilers and other software is perfect with the surface 8 pro. When I'm in school, I can use it as a pc while also using it as a tablet to take notes. Due to covid, I am most often learning from home. So I mostly use the surface as a sketch book for notes taking and writing down formulas and visual aids for my game development. I think either device is good for writing math formulas and drawing shapes. OneNote for Windows 10 is a really well made writing app from Microsoft. I can directly take a picture of what the teacher wrote or the code snippet from my desktop screen and write on top of kt. I wanted to get a second monitor, but I don't have to anymore since the surface kinda acts like one for me. I just put the surface beneath my keyboard and it just feels really good to use! I have owned both devices. The iPad Pro will always be a productivity device and nothing more. Apple severely hampers the OS. The last time I used the device, I was limited to extending the screen and not having a secondary screen to extend. The Surface Pro does exactly the same as the iPad Pro, but you can actually have an active, full fledged OS. The reviewer admitted the iPad Pro is locked down and less useful, but picked the device in their review. The review was done looking at a holistic approach to automation, but on their belief on hardware.
Thanks for the candid review. It really outlines the dilemma in choosing a tablet. I want the functionality of the Surface Pro with the capability of the iPad Pro. I am in the apple eco-system however I have been giving lots of thought to jumping ship for the the Surface pro 8 for laptop portability. I really wish Apple would eliminate the MacBook Air and make the iPad Pro a fully capable computer like the Surface. This would be a game changer.
What about iPadOS 16 with stage manager right now?
That will not happen. Apple wants customers to buy two devices. Customers' convenience is not its consideration.
I bought the iPad pro 12.9 inch because I needed an exceptional tablet experience. I tried multiple tablets ( windows, Android, apple) and I have to admit I keep coming back to the iPad. I write a lot of notes and annotate articles and PowerPoint presentations every week for school so the iPad pro allows me to fully enjoy doing so. The other reason is that I have an exceptional PC laptop which runs all my statistical and analytical software which I have had since 2018 with the I7 -16gb ram configuration which is ultra portable and will be used until it decides to literally die on me. These two devices are my life and I use them everyday for different purposes. As a side note I did buy the zugu case for my ipad which I would absolutely recommend to everyone because with it I never have to worry about the protection of my ipad and my apple pencil unhinging itself. Those are my thoughts and reasons as to why I chose to purchase the iPad pro, however to answer the first part of the original question posed, the real pro device would be the surface pro 8 😊 Also to help support the premise that I'm not biased, I have a Windows PC laptop, Apple iPad Pro, and an Android phone and I wouldn't have it any other way 😉

After owning a surface pro 8, and 7, along with an iPad pro 2020, I can confidently say that the Apple Pencil with optimizations with iPad OS makes me feel like drawing on procreate is just 900x better, with no latency. No surface device has no latency on normal pro level artist apps. I wouldn't feel bad about staying with surface if you've already got used to those desktop apps tho. Just go with the 8, and the slim pen 2. (I returned mine due to price,) but keep in mind activation rate of the pens are high and make drawing a nightmare sometime.

What brings me the performance of the iPad pro when I can't use it. In my opinion the surface pro 8 is a better choice because of the pro level software on it and you can do much more professional worklflow. But if the iPad would have MacOS, I would definitely go with it.
I’m a full stack web developer, switched from max to iPad Pro 12.9. There isn’t a single thing I can’t do with my iPad that I could do with my Mac. Did I have to switch up my workflow a bit? Surer, for example there is no VSCode on the iPad but I found IDEs that I actually like more on the App Store. And with my Remote Desktop app I can use windows, Linux, or macOS anytime I want and I haven’t noticed any lag. iPad is definitely the way to go because M1, battery life, Apple Pencil, but really the most important reason : the default OS isn’t windows.
@@HeyItsHades I just want the Windows experience and for most of us out there it has more features then the iPad.
@@user-nq5wd6oj5u I hate Windows... It's crap
The iPad appeals to more people with its simplistic and user-friendly UI though.
@@Tom_Stevens617 yeah instead of laggy, bloated, slow Windows...
i will be getting the Surface Pro 8 because it's a full windows computer, with 2 thunderbolt 4 ports which i can plug in a monitor, an egpu for better graphics, i can run linux via wsl on windows 11 also android app support is coming to windows 11 as well as adaptive refresh rate is coming to save on battery life
How does the Samsung Tab7+ compare to the Ipad for 4K video editing? How will the Samsung Tab 8 compare to Ipad for Video Editing? and watching 4K digital content Off-LINE ? 4. I was leaning towards waiting for a OLED ASUS 13.3 Tablet.. but that is running "Windows software" NOT "android" so again no "Movies anywhere" & the 13.3 will not handle Video editing?

Great device, but I'd wait until the 12th Gen Intel mobile processors to upgrade my 5-year-old Surface Pro 4 that's used totally as a tablet since I lost the typecover. Based on the current performance tests, the CPUs on Surface Pro 9 models could come a huge step closer towards M1, with all of its juice used in full and significantly longer battery time.
True, I also use my SP4 since it came out, and I can't believe that it is THAT old. I bought the top of the notch one at the time, and it still runs stuff with no problems. I would suggest buying a keyboard. I have done the same, so now I have two. And I replaced the battery for it, so it's like new again. That's why I'm still hesitant on upgrading :D literally no need to do it.
From what I've already heard about 2022 improvements and seen, 2023 will be the year for non apple users to upgrade.
Nevermind, asus just dropped their Z13. Just noticed it, definitely an upgrade.
Can you take notes on the surface pro 8 or the pro X?
I bought M1 ipad 2021 and used it for 1 year for study purposes however after using it day after day I started to realize its jut a big note for study with a huge limitation to use it in other purposes so i sold it last month and bought surface pro 8 and guess what i loved my new surface pro especially when i tried the new WSA from Microsoft which give me option to download all Android apps actually my advise to anyone who looking for studying working and entertainment machine go for surface One last thing i used a lot of Apple devices and after while i find huge limitations in software Thanks to all people here who encouraged me to buy surface
I don't think its very fair to compare Surfaces to iPads; -One is running a desktop OS with keyboard/mouse while the other is running a mobile OS (mobile OSs tend to be more locked down compared to desktop OS) -The other is x86-based, and the iPad is ARM-based. -Even though Apple intends their iPads to compete with the Surfaces, I highly doubt that. The fairest comparison would be Samsung Galaxy Tabs, as that's only the actual iPad competitor. That's like comparing an AMD Epyc-powered workstation to the M1X MacBook Pro.
But we need comparisons like this for people unsure which to buy
Also, Apple chose to handicap the iPad Pro. Perhaps this Surface Pro will put some pressure on Apple marketing people to allow the engineers to work properly.
This is exactly what I need I have both on my desk right now seeing what works for me So thanks so much
It's a quite fair comparison tbh, both are high-performance "pro" level tablets people use for portable productivity on a tablet form-factor which is more compact than a laptop. Galaxy tab S would be a considerable competitor only if its specifications could come close to M1 and if it had more pro-level apps.
@@ApexAshan Why on earth would anyone rational human being get an iPad when a SP can do the same things AND more. There is a reason iPads unit sales have plummeted from 73 million in 2013 to 40 million in 2019...

Useless? iPadOS is literally the best software you can find in any tablet.

Not eveyone pic ipad to do things u cannot, its not ipad's fault to be not tallented in writing, drawing, photo or video editing or using a pen, right? If what im all hyped about 2 in 1 is a touch screen pc, why surface? Why even bother getting an additional touch screen pc?

Ok... I'll give you 100 bucks for it then.....money is more useful than a brick, I would say.
If I got iPad Pro should I return for the pro 8 or keep my MacBook pro m1?
Thank goodness I watched this, I have the surface pro 8 with all the bits and bobs including a separate hub for all HDMI projectors, USB and card slot. You did forget to mention the extra USB port in the charger I love that feature! overall I did only get this as it has windows 11. I did a price comparison and the surface came in at $2100 AUD with all the extras apple was $2700 AUD with similar adaptors! I figured I have the iPhone for the camera and other features the Ipad pro has, so the surface won for me hands down.
two devices with two different operating system, I think they are both good for different group of person. Lots of work could be done on Windows; however, I love how smooth Mac/iPad OS it is.
If only the ipad could run MacOS with some kind of dual boot… An ipad can only be considered “pro” for artists. For every other profession windows/mac will work better. I’d still get a M1 Air or a full desktop windows PC over both of those tablets.
Is that the black/graphite type cover variant for the Surface Pro 8?
Pls guys what series of apple watch is he wearing in the presentation? Is it stainless steel also? Thanks guys
Ironically, Windows is both the greatest attraction and the greatest downside of the Surface Pro 8. I like Windows' ability to run any app, but I don't want it constantly questioning my decision with all its Edge, Bing, Office, etc BS.
I hope, in the future, to see iPad with all its varieties with dual center-stage front facing cameras: one vertical and the other horizontal to make life easier on any position suits the user.
Yeah 20 years in the future.
seems yes, "unfortunately"!
How mano battery duration have surface pro 8 real??? Because my real charge gone not much 5 hours with minimum system requirement
5116 - plugged in. Nice to see it did as well unplugged. Good job testing that.
Different devices, the keyboard is a necessity with the surface and a luxury with the iPad, the surface is a laptop pretending to be a tablet and the iPad is a tablet that pretends to be a laptop - that is all you need in the review
Except the iPad isn't pretending to be a laptop that is just a fantasy that tech reviewers have about the iPad, it's a tablet and nothing but a tablet which though, has enough computing ability for the needs for the average user who do not need to use any 'niche' software.
This comparison is like Apples vs Oranges. Sure, you added great points for the iPad but you forgot the key difference between the two. iPad is still running a mobile operating system, and Surface is on Desktop mode. You can't overlook this when making a fair comparison. Again it for the users to decide what they want. You saw iPad as winner, but I see Surface as a winner. Really it's a matter of people's needs.

Better hardware: M1 iPad Pro. Better software: Microsoft Surface Pro.
Does anyone know how the surface pro works with a photography work flow? Does it have an SD card port?
Funny comparison, I connected to my Surface two Displays, I am running Visual Studio 2019, Cubase 11, Sound cards , make a very professional recordings, MS Office, All Adobe applications. Zoom, OBS Studio..................................? Can you do all of those with iPad?

The headphone jack is kind of important I can't even knock that depending on the content you do.
The Ipad should get a zoom camera, like 3x, so it would be perfect for Students, taking photos from the board in best quality.
Lol facts
Why can't you use iPhone to take photos?
Is there a Surface Go 3 vs iPad 9th gen video coming soon?
Center stage is underrated Very fun and useful!
obviously it is the surface pro. it has an operating system that allows you to use its capabilities.
Can I do everything on this that I could do on a normal laptop?

@Patrick and you need to be foolish to buy an iPad pro
@@evansenudinisu4521 blind hater
lol it runs ios while the surface runs a full desktop system.
@Patrick doesn't change the fact that the surface pro beats the ipad in being a real laptop lmao
@Patrick maybe if Apple has a touch capable mac OS device i'd consider it.
I got a surface pro from work and I was converted that it us the best allround offfice device I have used. Battery life great, performance speed great, ease of moving around great and my biggest surprise, I really loved the keyboard. Sometimes it feels a bit floppy when standing it up but a solid 9 out of 10
Always depends on what the customer is looking for. On one hand you have the Surface Pro 8, which is really a small ultraportable PC. The emphasis here being on PC as in full Windows. Works best with keyboard attached. On the other hand you have the iPad Pro which is a tablet, with an emphasis on tablet optimized apps. A device that can compliment your work. It is not a Mac replacement. In the end it would make much more sense to compare the Surface Pro to the MacBook Air seing that Microsoft does not offer a pure tablet experience. One thing not covered in this particular video is battery life. How do the two stack up against each other when exporting photos or videos or scrolling through web pages all day long.
I own both and as great as the M1 iPad Pro is, I still need to have an actual computer for computer work. Now, for tablet type work ie media consumption, checking email, social media, I prefer the iPad Pro, easily. The SP8 in tablet model is inferior to the iPad Pro. I love them both for what they are good at. IF I had to have ONE device between these two, the SP8 wins only bc it's a full blown computer.
The surface runs a full operating system. The ipad runs a toddler operating system, you cannot install a complete program, it does not even get close to the utility of the surface.
I think the Surface is the pro device. Soon to come ability for Android app’s will level the playing field. It felt more like you were bashing on the Surface than comparing. Speed is not everything. Windows still allows programs to run, has better file management and more useful for business use.
I actually have an ipad mini, do you recommend me to go for an ipad pro or surface pro 8? Thanks
surface pro 8. ipad mini is powerful enough for what you might want to use it for, and more. get the surface pro 8 for other more versatile usages or the macbook air if you prefer the apple eco system
Surface Pro 8 good for 4K video editing ?
Having owned a previous version of the surface pro, I was hoping Microsoft would make improvements to the battery life. 4-6 Hours on typical usage case? That's extremely disappointing and probably the major deal breaker for this type of product. Sure the Ipad is limited to software, but the Surface Pro is more so hardware by Intel. Only when Microsoft learns to drop Intel in favor of Arm or AMD will the Surface Pro line be worth looking at. For context, my 2017 SP was also rated at this 4-5 hours screen on time but with a dual core i7. It ran hot, battery degraded significantly, and simple tasks would pushed cpu usage to 100% (2 core,4threads,8gb ram).
Idk how this dude tested the batt life, but on other reviews they last around 8 and half hours on 60hz while web browsing/watching videos and 7 and a half on 120 hz
Again, say it with me, AN IPAD IS NOT A LAPTOP. It will never be A LAPTOP. Comparing an iPad with a Surface (which IS a laptop) is just wrong. Using Windows with only touch input (not with pen and keyboard), which you didn't test, is horrible. Using an iPad with only touch input (not with pen and keyboard) is 1000x better. And yes, I've owned (and sold) the previous Surface Pro and I upgraded to an iPad Pro 11" with M1. Because it's the best tablet.
I agree. iPad is the best tablet but that's it.
Yh I agree to and apple knows it too tbh they never been a company to make unnecessary products and if the iPad could do it all they wouldn’t bother making the MacBook however if you could go between Mac OS and iPad OS it would be even better than the surface pro
The best thing about my 12.9 iPad Pro is that it’s the best tablet, in every way. But its also an amazing laptop. All these other companies are trying to turn laptops into tablets which just sucks because the OS isn’t designed properly for when you want to only use touch. However, apples approach of turning a tablet into a laptop makes much more sense. Touch interface first works with a mouse and keyboard but mouse and keyboard first doesn’t work with touch. As I said in another comment. I’m a full stack web developer and I switched away from Mac to my iPad Pro. I love it. There isn’t a single thing I can’t do with and when I’m planning stuff out it’s so nice to just pull it off the keyboard and write notes with the pencil and not feel like I’m losing functionality. Further, I have a Remote Desktop app that allows me to run windows, Linux, macOS, and remote into servers. There is literally zero lag even over cellular when I use this. It actually feels like I’m just using regular macOS, linux, or windows. Apple would have to come out with some truly industry destroying tech for me to ever go back to a laptop. Although I am looking at maybe getting the Mac mini m1X that supposed to come out in a week or so for a desktop setup as the one complaint I have about the iPad is that when plugged into a monitor it only mirrors the screen.
Thank God someone realistic
the surface isn’t sold as only a laptop. it’s also sold as a tablet. so whatever that point you were trying to make was is totally pointless.
So, the i5 vs the M1 Pro..Why not the i7 or i9 (not sure if they exist for the Surface 8. Also, mobile OS vs full OS) Can the iPad run MacOS?
Unbiased review 👏👏
