  • i wanted a palette cleanse, so i hope you all enjoy. there is an extended cut on patreon where i discuss myths, theories, and debunks - if you're interested :) www.patreon.com/timesix SPOILER. . [this is from the extended cut, but i'm posting this section here] Despite the intense dangers, it was not considered to be a “suicide mission” at the time. The men involved simply knew it was a task that needed done, regardless of the severity. And while a failure to act could have spread much more radiation across the area, the chance of a steam explosion causing a nuclear chain reaction that could “render Europe uninhabitable” is actively debated still to this day. While some physicists believe this could have been a nuclear doomsday, and some historians wonder if this could have sparked a possible WW3 - others argue that the conditions required to trigger and sustain a fission chain reaction have to be so extremely specific, that it would be nearly only possible through design. So to put it simply, some believe that Reactor 4 wouldn’t have turned into a nuclear bomb by accident. Again, though, that is just speculation ... speculation of an event that we are lucky to not have happened.

    • It certainly had a huge effect on me. I was in the U.S. Navy training as a nuclear engineer when Three Mile Island happened. That put a damper on new nuclear plants in the US. When I got out in 1984, I went to school to finish the hours I needed for a nuclear engineering degree. I was just 6 weeks shy of graduating when Chernobyl happened. That ended nuclear power in the US entirely. So, without the prospect of a job, after I graduated I went back and got a physics degree.

  • They did an import and heroicthing, but in no way did they stop a megaton level explosion that would have made Europe uninhabitable. That's not how nuclear power, and especially not how nuclear weapons, work. It's really, really difficult to set off a fission bomb. However, to reach the megaton range, you need a fusion bomb, i.e. a thermonuclear or hydrogen bomb. Setting off one of those is even harder since one step is setting off a fission bomb. Neither eventuality is likely to happen randomly in a molten core mixed up with building materials to such a level that the elephant's foot cooled down on it's own. They were probably there to prevent a steam explosion that could've lead to further regional contamination (especially through groundwater contamination). Bad, but nothing like the megaton event mentioned here.
