Why The HIV Vaccine Is Closer Than Ever

Scientists are hopeful that the mRNA technology used in the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccines could be a turning point in HIV vaccine development. Watch the video above to learn why mRNA technology seems so promising, how this research is funded and who ultimately makes the money once a vaccine is ready to go to market.
0:00 - Introduction
2:02 - Funding research
4:28 - mRNA vaccines
8:20 - Ownership and profit
10:56 - Access
Every Dec. 1, the world commemorates those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Known as World AIDS Day, it serves as a reminder that there has been an ongoing pandemic for the past 40 years, pre-dating Covid.
The Covid vaccines were sequenced, developed and approved in the U.S. in record time, but that would not have been possible without decades of work by HIV researchers.
“Almost everybody working on Covid vaccines comes from the HIV world,” said Mitchell Warren, executive director of AVAC, a global advocacy group for HIV prevention. “Moderna had been working on mRNA-based HIV vaccine before SARS-CoV-2 was even known to exist.”
An HIV vaccine has eluded scientists for decades. The traditional thinking around vaccines is to mimic the body’s natural immune response to a virus. The problem with HIV is the body’s natural immune response isn’t strong enough to fight the virus. This means a vaccine has to come at the problem in a different way. Scientists are hopeful that mRNA technology - the same technology used in the Covid vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech - could be a turning point.
Government funding is a crucial component of all vaccine research and development. Within a few months, Operation Warp Speed allocated $10 billion to Covid vaccine research and development. By contrast, between 2000 and 2020, the U.S. government contributed $12 billion toward HIV vaccine research and development. This funding frequently goes to private companies.
“Just about every vaccine that we get today was developed by some private company, even though the actual research and development may have been a shared enterprise,” said Dr. Jeffrey Harris, co-founder of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network.
Public-private partnerships can have serious implications for who turns a profit and who ultimately gets access to the vaccine. Moderna and the National Institutes of Health are currently locked in a legal battle over a key patent for the Moderna Covid vaccine.

  • With public funds lately contributing to the development of the vaccines, the public should hold a majority of the profits and licenses. The company that actually did develop it should still get profits from the sales as well. But it shouldn't be constrained to be manufactured only in their facility. This should have been addressed before grants were provided to those companies.

    @asdfgoogle@asdfgoogle2 жыл бұрын
    • If the public funded the development, the public should therefore receive a massive reduction in the price. Its really scummy that we pay for development and we get no benefit from it at all, quite the opposite actually we paid to create something and then....have to pay to acquire it? Its really absurd.

It means you had a poor understanding of what vaccines are. Which is ok, if you're not a doctor. • 2:23 "Six years after the first case" Actually HIV was reported decades earlier, but wasnt known as HIV. Patient Zero was a hunter in Africa in very late 19th century, who frequented a busy port town. According to the CDC, hunters who hunted primates in Central Africa sold them to people who would eat their meat, some of the primates would have SIV but the human body cleared it easily. SIV was common enough to be able to enter human body constantly which increased chances of it mutating into HIV. The first case in the US was in the 1950s but it wasnt known as HIV. Europe had HIV epidemic during 1930s-1950s because Cameroon was a German colony, so HIV was likely rampant during the Holocaust and was spread all through Europe. Experts at the time called it Pneumocystis Pneumonia, since they had no idea it was actually a symptom of a virus unknown to them at the time.

If we can force the virus to produce same antigen on its surface via a mRNA vaccine or a drug and wait till all viruses has same antigen on their surfaces and after that to the patient we can give neutrolizing antibodies in order to demolish viruses because they expressed same specific antigens on its surfaces.

This one for example requires storage at -70, much colder than most medical fridges, and transports. Is it really that surprising that a drug which would require you updating your storage and distribution systems globally, would take a significant event to actually make prime time.

  • What is crazy is that even though I'm the tax payer that help fund these billion dollar contracts, where's my return from the investment. The billionaires throughout the world buy stocks and get richer from money that my great great grandchildren will still be paying back with future taxes. All this of course making billions not only for all the invested stock holders, but also billions in interest payments made back to the privately run federal reserve. What's funny is how hard it is to find a complete covid breakdown of every government contract given and for how much. It's easy to find the breakdown for the public funding of stimulus money given to tax payers for money that was theirs to begin with... Yet you only get bits and pieces of the trillions being paid out to corporations. There's cvs, walgreens, walmart, and rite aid just to name a few smaller companies. Then of course the vaccine and covid test kit companies. There's also many companies receiving subsidies, (tax money).... and you'll also find money funding for "others". Who knows where that cash is going. It's extremely funny though how many people believe the whole thing is free. You'd be surprised how many times I've heard the following ignorant question from people....... "The governments aren't making any money from covid because the vaccines are free, right?" The actual government isn't, but government officials, corporations, and investors will make billions of dollars in the long run due to tax money being paid out and will continue for decades to come. Instead of government war contracts fed to you as a necessity due to terrorism, now there will be a new virus every 2-4 years in order to craft new vaccines making the rich richer. It's not simply a coincidence that during Obama's presidency a new unheard of virus outbreak hit every 2 years. I was told 20 years ago to invest in bioscience companies as they were going to be the wave of the future. At the time I wondered why....well here we are. It's all about money. And if they succeed in passing laws to force vaccines, you will see new viruses popping up every year in order to maximize their returns. Make no mistake, it's about money money money. They want us to believe that the government's of the world care for our lives and have our best interest at hand. They want us to believe it's about saving lives..... so much so that they're trying to persuade lawmakers to pass laws requiring everyone to vaccinate or you'll lose your jobs and could be penalized or fined?? All of this while a women can still have the right to abort her unborn child. They care so much. Right? Believe me, anytime a government tries this hard to instill an ideal to this proportion, there's major investments and billions are being made. Please wake up before it's too late. What little freedoms we have left are sitting on the table for the taking. Do you really want your grandchildren and future generations being vaccine dependent.

  • What's needed is a world-wide non-profit pharmaceutical company with multiple subdivisions set, by default, to compete with each other for creating the best vaccines and other medications possible. It needs to be funded through international taxation as a public company (not private), and it needs to also be able to accept donations of any amount from any source, but the sources donating more than $500 would have to be 100% anonymous, again, by default. What's needed is to take money and control/prestige off the menu, so the focus can be solely on preventing and curing disease/injuries of various sorts. It would need to be started by any number of current or former workers at the larger pharmaceutical companies who are sick and tired of all the BS they see their companies engaging in, all for the love of money and power.
