Greatness? Michael died alone. That is the whole point of the story. He got out only to get back in. Sure he suffered some tragedy, but it was all because of mafia business. He was ivy league collage educated, a Captain in the Army decorated for his service in WW2, he had a great girl in Kay. He was a reserved man but he had everything going for him and Vito was right for him not to be involved in his business. Then Vito got shot and Michael naturally wanted revenge. It was a downward slope from there. Santino dies, Michael effectively takes over, pushes Tom out to just do menial advocate stuff. Vito dies. Michael solidifies his position and gets rid of Carlo and Sally. Understandable. Sal knew what was coming and took it on the chin. He played and got burned. Then they move to Nevada and again seem to have everything going for them only for some damn reason Michael gets on the bad side with Hyman Roth, to the point they want to get rid of him and use Fredo. Sure, Fredo did wrong, but he never ever intended for an assassination attempt. Nevertheless he has Fredo ordered killed in the very boat he fishes with Michaels son....his own damn brother. It would have been the simplest thing to just keep watch over Fredo so he doesn't do funny business and keep a cordial relationship if nothing but for Connie, but no, he killed, his, own, older, brother!!!! /spit Then he tries to go legit, forming a life of a well to do sophisticated man but he, for some damn reason, takes Sonny's out of wedlock boy under his wing to form him into the new head of the family. This guy? This...hot headed imbecile? Stupid ass mistake in my opinion but sure whatever. Vincent did not after all try to kill Michael as some believe. His mafia days just get caught up to him in the end and even then he is not the one dying, well not corporeal at least. His daughter is killed right in front of him causing his mind to break. The last image we see of Michael is him sitting in Sicily, dying of old age with nobody beside him. He had to live with what I hope were his many regrets the rest of his days. Michael is not a great man, he never was....

@@Ashgrom exactly Vito died like a boss Michael pushed all around him away for power Vito was the true God father reminds me of Salvatore Riina & Provenzano Rinna liked to live n let all know who he was Provenzano kept it low was on the run for years he was worth billions but was living under a chicken shed when I went to my village my father introduce me to our local godfather & he was a good man forced the govt to build flat roof homes for all war veterans that stays in the family you can build upto 3 levels for your family but it will always be in your family he was a 80yr old man his wife was lovely like my nonna my dad went to Italy to the Festa of Saint Rocco my dad put over $70k cause he was on trial for large heroin supply but you can't buy a saint when he got back judge gave him 20yrs

Was working at Lincoln Hospital (3 months) in 1972, did not know It was used in the movie (to admit the old man when he was shot), the old nursing school was used to house on call doctors. We had security guard to watch us then. The movie was so intense and life-like.
