BOWHUNTING TAHR NEW ZEALAND 🔥 BACKPACKING MOUNTAIN BOW HUNTING IN SOUTHERN ALPS
Join me and my father as we travel to the New Zealand Southern Alps to hunt Himalayan Tahr. An iconic species that is currently threatened by the government plans of complete eradication. An adventure that I would highly encourage everyone to do it, especially with a friend, in this case, my dad. We start the hunt with the bow and after I join my father to share his hunt with the rifle. Special thanks to Shaun Allison from Exclusive Adventure New Zealand, Tom Overton, and Jerry Reedman who film this trip for making it so special.
Please take a moment to support the New Zealand tahr foundation to preserve the tahr and sustainable management through hunting.

Huge thanks Josh!
Q maravilla!!
living through your experiences Pedro...thanks for posting another amazing video
My pleasure Mario!
@@pedroampuerohunting Great article on Bowhunter magazine as well!
Amazing hunt to watch and to have you enjoy that hunt with your father is amazing. I thank you for raising the awareness of what is happening in our country right now, we must fight to save our tahr herd from destruction, again thank you.
hey mate, no one is eliminating Tahr. We are just keeping the numbers down so tahr dont elimnate some of our native alpine species. Ecosystems will become worse if they are less diverse. It is 3x the legal limit of Tahr and that might make some of NZ's own endemic species become extinct. Kia kaha and get some more so DOC dont have too!
Much appreciated mate!
Fantastic moments spent with your dad, well done guys! Great memories.
Thanks so much!!!
Absolutely a privilege to watch you hunt with your family. I've already begun with my daughter
That is awesome Shane!
Congrats Pedro you got a really nice Tahr and ya don't forget to share your trophy room oneday 😅

Awesome trip there Pedro !!! So wonderful to see the joy in your Dad's eyes ... no doubt the same joy and excitement as when he was a young fella. As hunters I hope we all never lose those feelings of being in the mountains. Cheers, Matt.
Huge thanks Matt, completely agree, nothing like seeing my dad still get excited.

Mil gracias otra vez!!
🔝
Incredible video of you and your father. Can I ask what month you ended up hunting in? Is May the best time? Starting to do my research for this hunt.
I'd say May or June! It's an amazing place to hunt, prepare yourself for a good hike!
awesome video, keep up the good work in keeping the numbers down, its a shame they are so overpopulated as many alpine plant species are now becoming endangered due to there being so many... lets get those numbers down to a manageable size so DOC don't have to step in and cull next time!
thanks for your comment mate! Hopefully they work a solution out.
Great video! Waidmannsheil! Nice rifle your dad used. What make is it?
It is a Proof research .300 win mag with a Nightforce atacr scope.
Pedro Ampuero looks great!
Pedro, otro super video!!!
Amazing hunt! Whats rifle and caliber?
It is a Proof research .300 win mag with a Nightforce atacr scope.
We have Tahrs here on Table Mountain in Cape Town. The are escapees from an old zoo and now survive on the mountain. As they are not native to SA, officials have previously tried to get rid of them. But one of the requirements was to retrieve the body, which is near impossible as the Tahrs can get themselves into very tricky situations (for humans not the tahrs haha). I have come across one on a quiet afternoon and they bolted straight down very steep slope faster than Usain Bolt can cover 100m on horizontal ground.
I didn't know that! Thats crazy, its amazing how well they can adapt.
@@pedroampuerohunting what boots did you use on this trip?
Awesome, what rifle caliber were you using?
my dad use a 300 win mag.
And a free tenderizing of the meat!! LOL nice!
LOL!!! Thanks Greg!
Gread hunt Weidmannsheil. Which Papers I have to provide to hunt with a bow in Spanien.?
After thirty very active years hunting in Australia I went to New Zealand after Chamois, Red & Whitetail deer & Wild ram about twenty eras ago. I got my bull Tahr on the first day, but that remains the all time hardest, most strenuous trophy I took in my whole life. So I know that country and it's Arctic like cold that makes your diaphram ache and how treacherous the footing mostly is. So all I have to say is.. your dad is TOUGH! The fact you can share moments like this together after he obviously got you into this sport is beyond value & will be precious long after he puts up his boots like I have at 71 years of age.
My dad is badass, he will never hang the boots, he is 71 now and still crushing it every day. Thanks for the message and get those boots back on!
Why did you guys cut out the hike? That's the fun part.
you seriously wonder just how much meat off these bulls are recovered. Tahr is one of the best game meats in nz, would be a shame if they left all but the prime cuts on the mountain.
We packed the four quarters, backstraps and tenderloin which is most of the meat. It was good eating!
@@pedroampuerohunting good job mate, far better than a lot of the local hunters around here. Have seen some guys shoot 4 bulls on a trip, and take nothing but the hides and the horns.
На Дагестанские Горы похож
Aren’t these animals becoming extinct? Isn’t their a movement going on right now to save these?
GOVERMENT wants to eradicate them and kill them all. The movement is to protect the killing, and keep doing sustainable hunting.
@@pedroampuerohunting Bravo!Government should be fighting pests not game animals that are already part of the kiwi culture!
They use to be but now they are no longer an endangered species. They are however on the path of making a few native alpine plant species extinct that can only be found in Mt. Cook national park. Department of Conservation only want them out of National Parks and the numbers reduced in general because it is damaging New Zealand's alpine ecosystems. The legal limit for them in the area is 10,000 and there is 30,000+... National parks are to protect national wildlife, not exotics that destroy the environment we are trying to protect. They are becoming a pest because of the overpopulation. That's it. That is all DOC are fixing. They are not eliminating the species.
