This is the ultimate character summary and analysis of Ultra Magnus in Transformers Prime. He's not the dry and stiff character you might believe him to be! He has a nice character arc with Wheeljack in season 3 and reveals many subtle signs that he is a caring person

As a young adult who later joined the military I completely understand Ultra Magnus perspective, he simply wants the Autobots to have some measure of discipline and focus because they're definitely going to need it for the difficult fight ahead of them, especially since their side is highly fractured.

  • I always liked that Ultra Magnus is not just another TFA Sentinel, he's just kind of the outsider and is stern and that slows morale at first cause he reintroduces it to a team that's learned to work more casually, but his attention to protocol is never shown being ineffective or in the wrong, or leaving him incompetant when things go south like some stories do. And I also like how courageous he can be and how Wheeljack gets to see that and accept him, the other four have kind of already worked with him before, it makes sense they're just bystanders to the conflicts. I might've watched this when I was 12 but Magnus' never felt like a stick in the mud. Sometimes I think he models himself after Optimus but doesn't have the same experiences. Its very humanizing.

  • Honestly, this version of Ultra Magnus is a very interesting one and one of my favorite ! The contrast between him and Optimus was really interesting, his sense of duty gets over everything yet he just wants the best for the Autobots and feels truly responsible for the man under his commands; to the point where to him, discipline is the only way the keep most people out of danger, even if it means treating them as soldiers more than individuals. I also thinks he was changed by the war, showing less and less emotions over time, once again because any mistakes he make can endanger the lives of many Autobot,s and now even humans. I like the way he knows he's no Optimus, he is self-aware of his flaws, questioning his way of leading the others in battle and how it impact the team well being. Ultra Magnus, could have been handle slightly better in the first episodes he appeared in and should’ve gotten more attention in the movie, but he's still a well written character in my opinion.

  • Optimus states when he spoke about learning the concept of family, that it was a human concept. It's highly likely that Optimus was once just as much of a stern traditionalist military leader as Ultra Magnus was when he was introduced. In this way, it gives his growth another layer of depth. Optimus sees family as a human concept, and has modelled his leadership around what he learned. If Optimus, back when training Magnus, had already been the way he is at that point in the show, it is likely that Magnus would have emulated that, and been more successful leading the other autobots in the show when he was the one in command. Megatron telling Magnus that he isn't Optimus is significant because of 2 things: 1: Magnus is trying to be Optimus. He is trying to emulate his teacher because his teacher gave him a solid foundation to build upon, and has up until recently, been very successful against hopeless odds. He stuck to what his leader taught him because it had been effective. He was just missing one piece of the puzzle. 2: The Optimus he knew before they reunited, the Optimus he was trying to be, has gained new perspectives from his experiences that have made him an even better leader, and his attempts to be the next Optimus were ironically impossible because of what he had learned from Optimus prior to this. Magnus was trying to be the Optimus that hadn't learned these lessons. His struggles with balancing strict leadership with the individuality of the other autobots and their tendencies to not stick to a strict plan, are because he wasn't trying to be an individual. He was trying to do something that present Optimus would teach him not to do: trying to be someone else, and not ever deviating from the rules, even when it would be effective. Interestingly enough, one of the ways in which his individuality is shown is ironically the part of him that is most identical to Optimus: worrying about others. Both have had moments where worrying about others in the heat of the moment has given the enemy the advantage. Both of them would put themselves in harm's way to spare others, and see it as their responsibility to face overwhelming odds to protect others. This is one of my favorite parts of his character. He is unlike Optimus in the ways he tries to emulate him, yet almost identical in the most individualistic traits he shows. The more he is himself, the more he is like the hero he looks up to.

  • I will admit, when I first saw Ultra Magnus as a kid, I didn't like him at first, but not because of the way he treated Wheeljack (I honestly didn't like Wheeljack much as a kid either), I didn't like him because, in my mind, he only saw Team Prime as soldiers and nothing else. Yes, they are fighting a war so they are still technically soldiers, but when he is first introduced, he hasn't worked with Team Prime all together before, and here he comes barging in, immediately taking over the team. But after seeing him relinquish command back to Optimus, and seeing him trying to change his ways, I realized he wasn't that bad of a guy at all, and I started liking him more, especially as I grew up.

  • What you said about Wheeljack actually made me think: more often than not, modern media depicts any kind of rebellion as positive. I'm not saying that fighting for what you are or what you believe in is wrong, I'm saying that you should develop crytical thinking and pick which rules you should rebel against and which rules might have reasons to be there in the first place. You rightfully pointed out your firefighter BG, and I think it really fits! Rescue situations and battlefield situations are extremely similar in a way: both are team efforts in which communication, cohordination and a clear chain of command are fundamental to get to the desired end goal. Again, I'm not saying that indipendent thinking is bad, but discarding orders by default is just bad.

  • I ain't gonna lie when I saw Wheeljack acting so reckless and Ultra Magnus calls him out I actually agreed with him. I get he's a wrecker and is a lone wolf, but if the young hotshot rookie like Smokescreen knows better not to bring Jack, a person who proved himself the most out of all of the humans, onto a possible battlefield then a veteran like Wheeljack should know better too. He nearly killed Miko, brought her on a mission knowing cons were probably there, and nearly got Ultra Magnus and Bulkhead killed. And yet what makes it worse is that Bulkhead kept defending him from Magnus. Like Bulkhead in the past 2 seasons would've been more like Arcee when she found out Smokescreen brought Jack on a possibel dangerous area, yet he doesn't call him out. This not only seems like character assassination on both wreckers, but also makes me sympathize with Ultra Magnus even more. Especially since this is a military unit and acting on your own can get you and your team killed.

Magnus simply enforces the rules strictly until he realizes it’s better to try and work with the personalities of team prime instead of against them. Not to mention they seem to relax more across the 3rd season, being far more friendly to the team by the end of the series. Sure, he’s cold and seems mean, but it’s war he’s dealing with, and there isn’t much time to goof off. A well structured plan and well structured backup plans can easily save your life (or a conversation, or anything).

  • i always respected Ultra Magnus and hated him being nerfed in the battle against Megatron when i know he could have won without plot convenience, and was low key sad when was standing alone after everybody crowed Optimus but he looked cool af at the same time not mention the cool weapons he brought on the ship were great. This man was a pretty cool and honorable warrior i wish we got to meet earlier.

  • I think he’s an excellent contrast to Optimus. Where Optimus prided himself on being an Emotional leader, being more of a father figure than a military commander, Magnus is a more traditional military leader. They compliment each other very well.

  • Your firefighter analogy makes sense, and it applies perfectly to small unit tactics in the military as well. I'm a combat medic and part of our training was learning to fall back on and rely on our training, but to not be afraid to act on instinct. But again, that instinct is still training.

  • he reminded me of this one strict teacher I had for history in high school. she didn't smile much, was very precise and to the point with her teaching and criticism and if you screwed up? you got told off. while she did have her moments of softening up, she wasn't the one teacher we were fond of at the time. truth be told though? she was the only reason why I managed to get through physics, a subject relatively new and terrifying to me with decent grades. and I appreciate that now. she did need to loosen up though. just a bit.

  • Respect for Ultra Magnus, a true autobot commander and without question, one of the best and strongest leaders in the autobots ranks: Always caring about the innocents and his soilders/friends/teammates and will put a fight to the end againts the strongest decepticons and predacons; to me, he is a hero and a true warrior/soldier.

  • You are so right with this, Wheeljack is fun to watch but yeah IRL I wouldnt want to be anywhere near Prime wheeljack for long, he makes the more scientist esque wheeljacks seem safe since atleast they have a backup prime or quick enough to reverse what they did. I did see Ultra Magnus as rigid at first but after a while I saw him as well the bot that had to be leader for centuries not knowing where his commander was or even if he was still alive, so the personality
