Israel bombed an Iranian consulate. Iran retaliated with hundreds of missiles and drones against Israel, but didn’t kill anyone; then Israel struck back with a bombing raid just small enough for the Iranians to pretend it had not happened.
The world held its breath as the middle east’s military superpowers headed towards a conflagration that would have ignited the entire region, and quite possibly triggered world war three. Then, just as suddenly, it was all over.
What on earth was Tehran thinking?
In this episode of Defence in Depth, Roland Oliphant, senior foreign correspondent, asks the question: would a war with Israel rally Iranians to the flag - or would it be the last straw that would see them finally overthrow the regime?

    • It would be really interesting to learn more about propaganda/ disinformation circulating on both sides about Israel/Hamas via social media, and how this is being used to influence electoral/ trade union politics in the West, and to what end. And more broadly where do pro-Palestinian/ anti-Zionist views on the left come from (e.g. how did Chomsky, Pappé, Zizek etc come to form their viewpoints)? It can't all just be from Iranian propaganda... Right?

  • I think its important to explain how physically far apart the two countries are. Any direct confrontation would involve rockets and airplanes. Large scale tank battles or infantry clashes are simply impossoblr for both countries.

  • As an Iranian who opposes the regime, let me answer that question: 9:10 The borders of Iran hold immense significance for the majority of people. Personally, I feel a surge of intense emotion whenever I hear of possible conflicts erupting on our soil or discover attempts to incite tensions among minorities by Israel. Instead of engaging Iran directly or supporting the division of Iran, the West should focus on diplomacy and addressing issues outside of borders. It's crucial to understand that the people of Iran have a deep love for their homeland and are willing to defend every inch of it with their lives.

    • I understand that nobody is talking about invading Iran, but about stoping Iran's regime from having nukes. Nobody cares about France having Nukes, or India or even Israel, but Iran's regime is a very active promotor of terror, and terror with nukes will produce horrifying things that probably have no name yet to describe them. It has to be avoided by all means. Therefore, I don't think a diplomatic solution is possible with terrorists. Not with this regime.

  • Well, to make some of my desserts, l may need both Israel and Iran. Iran has the best pistachioes and Zagros figs, and Israel has great dates and melons. Now, this stated, Iran may need Israel to restore Zoroastrianism and Christianity. Israel also has Bahai, who may too contribute to giving Iran help iit get rid of lslam. The thing is, as it stands, the end of lslam in lran is jeoardized by the lranians who are willingly Muslim. I am French, l regularly encounter in France lranians who, upon being safe, revert to Zorolastrianism or Christianism (usually they opt for being Catholic or Lutherians instead of reverting to being Nestorians). If the Islamic Republic falls, l deem that within days a fitfh to a quarter of the Iranians would cease to follow lslam.
